Top-rated things to do in West Sussex

Unique activities hosted by local experts vetted for quality

  • Forest Bathing / Shinrin-Yoku
Forest Bathing (Shinrin-Yoku) is a traditional Japanese awareness meditation, proven to be a profound antidote to anxiety, depression, fear and tension. You will be taken upon a simple forest walk, whereupon your guide, Helena, will facilitate and enable a sensual immersive experience, whereby the forest languages of renewal, growth, change and impermanence will become your experiential second nature. You will develop a sense of inner peace and stillness that will be supported and encouraged by nature's living, ever-changing process. Absolutely no experience necessary. The requirements are a willingness to let go of your troubles, fears, worries and anxieties. Other things to note Wear warmer clothes than usual as we will spend time being still in the woods and in the shade of the forest canope. You may also wish to bring something to sit on during sit spot practice.

  • Axe Throwing Session Brighton
On the axe throwing range we ‘aim’ to give you a diverse and unique experience. We have over 10 individual targets set up to take standard Tomahawk Axes, for precision throws all the way through to heavy double headed Spartan Axes for a more warrior-like feel. Axe throwing in general is a huge and varied sport. As a result, it allows you to get a good feel for the various implements that can be thrown. We have a alrge range including small ninja axes, 2 styles of throwing knives, 2 styles of throwing torpedo’s, Bear Grills hunting axes, hammer head axes, fireman axes, 2 styles of tomahawk axes, ice pickaxes, and of course 2 styles of the large double handed axes available for you to master. About the Activity Your time on the range will be run as a have a go session. During this, you will get to try all of them out. If you have a particular interest and if discussed with the instructor on the day, you could possibly focus on one particular area. A competition will be held at the end to see who can stick 5 of their favorite axes in targets. This will get smaller as you progress. Other things to note We are an outdoors activity center so please bear this in mind when booking, we do continue our sessions in most weather conditions.

  • Halnaker tree tunnel and windmill walk
Join me on a leisurely 4-mile walk (lasting 2 to 2.5 hours) through the beautiful Sussex countryside, into the South Downs National Park via an ancient hollow way following in the footsteps of Romans, commoners and a king fleeing for his life! We'll start our walk in a village just a ten-minute drive (20-minute by bus) north of Chichester, passing through vineyards, farmland and a beautiful tunnel of trees. After a short walk uphill, we'll see the restored windmill and have time to admire the 360° views of the Sussex countryside. The Isle of Wight can be seen from here on a clear day. Learn about Boxgrove Man, the oldest human remains ever found in England, a Neolithic settlement and see WWII radio direction-finding structures. Hear local folktales and learn a little Sussex dialect. Depending on the time of year, we may see a range of butterflies and birds, including buzzards and skylarks and, if we are very lucky, we may see some deer. Chichester is the nearest railway station. There is a regular bus service from there to the meeting point. Other things to note: This is an easy walk but it is not suitable for anyone with mobility difficulties due to several stiles on the route. The route can be very muddy after rain. Alternative times/and dates are possible on request. There are no public toilets in the village. Parking is available at the meeting point.

  • REQ's Brighton street art tours
Long a draw (no pun intended) for local and London-based graffiti and street artists, Brighton like Bristol still has plenty of raw, exciting talent throwing fresh work up on the walls and surfaces of the city's streets. Get a taste for the city's unique street art scene by exploring the neighbourhood with local expert and artist, REQ, who walks and talks you through individual pieces as well as giving you an overview of this colourful, often un-commissioned side of Brighton's creative scene. Other things to note As this is a walking tour, please wear comfortable shoes or trainers (and bring an umbrella, just in case). Meet at the gallery 10 minutes before the start time and at the end of the tour we will return to the gallery for drinks.
