Anna Maria 4, a houseboat for 12 people in the heart of Sète

A barge to breathe, travel, meet, drink, eat, laugh and dream... Small event, seminar, birthday, vacation on the water, on the river or by the sea, with family or friends, between professionals: once you have tasted the very unique charm of the Anna Maria 4 barge, you can only adopt it. We come, we come back, and we come back again, for different occasions, for work or leisure, special events, unusual vacations... You will want to come and discover the Anna Maria 4 barge, moored in the heart of Sète since recently, just descended from Amsterdam and Brussels, to experience the magic of sleeping in one of its comfortable cabins, eating with a view of the water, enjoying the beautiful wooden terrace, the common room and the large open kitchen... On the quay, in the heart of the unique city, with all the museums, beaches, halls - at your fingertips, on foot. But also – and most importantly – while sailing. On the Étang de Thau, passing through or in front of the Pointe Courte, by the oyster port of Bouzigues, by Mèze and towards Marseillan, the Quai des Onglous. You can take the start of the Canal du Midi, to the round lock of Agde, on the other side of the Hérault. Or go up to the Rhône, via Saint-Gilles, to Arles, Avignon, Lyon - via the Rhône canal in Sète and its head-turning stops: Frontignan and its muscat, Villeneuve-les-Maguelonne and its cathedral, Gallician and its ranches, the birds of Camargue, Aigues-Mortes and its ramparts. On request or according to the program, with the seasons, before storms or between bridges... Built in the Netherlands in 1957, Anna Maria is now 38 meters long and 5 meters wide - the gauge to pass the Freyssinet type locks (found throughout Europe, and which are 8 meters longer than those of the Canal du Midi, which are only 30 meters long). She began her life as a barge for transporting vegetables and flower bulbs in Amsterdam. Then it was motorized there, fitted out to accommodate passengers, enlarged by a few meters to be able to store more water, a large boiler, and shelter an outdoor terrace from the rain. Today, after two years of renovation at the historic Meuse & Sambre shipyard in Belgium, it has almost become a luxury yacht, all adorned with wood and glass, stone, linen and light cotton... But in its soul and atmosphere, it has remained this beautiful, friendly and warm boat – now fully equipped with new amenities to accommodate up to twelve people in any season. As a family, group, colleagues, collaborators or friends, you will enjoy six comfortable cabins with 160 cm wide beds, practical storage to have everything with you, reversible air conditioning that cools in summer and heats in winter, and large windows that open fully onto the water (and not, as is often the case on boats, tiny portholes!). Each cabin has its own small and beautiful shower or bath room with wall-mounted toilet and silent macerator, all newly tiled with gray marble. If your stay is for a week or more, you can even use the washer and dryer that are available in the hallway leading to the rooms. And as far as noise is concerned, even if some want to listen to music or put the world to rights in the living room, those who are already asleep will not hear them – as long as the night owls keep quiet and do not spill over onto the decks and terraces outside, of course! – because the two spaces are well separated by the central deck-terrace. On the other side of this covered bridge-terrace, therefore, you will find the common living space: it is actually a large living room for cooking and eating together – the lifestyle that we all favor more and more, especially on weekends and holidays. No more desire to endure the daily moods of tired chefs, with routine menus: make way for the pleasure of shopping together, sharing the day's finds and having fun cooking this or that, with this or that citrus or condiment, vegetable, herb, fruit... Opening a very cloudy white, a super natural orange wine or an ultra gourmet red, a slightly sour beer or a gently sparkling kombucha. To play with, you will have as accessories available a gas stove, a large American fridge, a low freezer with 4 drawers, a wine cellar with a capacity for 42 bottles, a brand new dishwasher, a large convivial and modular table, and a sitting area with two large soft sofas, a narrower bench and small tables to arrange glasses, tapas, books and phones, chargers, small everyday objects... To enjoy the view of the water, the spray or the light breeze at the same time, or even to smoke if it's still relevant, you can go up to the central deck-terrace and lean on the railing like on the big liners – just to watch the landscape unfold slowly, the birds dive, the fish fly... Epicenter of the life of the boat, this deck is about twenty square meters, protected from the rain and sun by a solid, well-stretched awning. To climb onto the front roof terrace, you can climb by the rail of the central deck, but for more caution and not to risk slipping, we prefer to go through the interior, going up the corridor of the cabins to the nose of the boat, where through the door facing outwards, you climb a few steps and then more, to reach this vast deck-terrace of about 70 square meters, with its wooden decking and benches-chests. It is ideal for lounging in the sun, having a coffee or an aperitif, taking a nap or doing yoga, depending on your mood, the weather, the wind or the mood of the moment... Since March 2022, the barge has been moored in the middle of Sète, at the Quai de la République, in the heart of the canals - between sea and lagoon, Mediterranean and Étang de Thau. But it can move on request: a pilot then comes to take it in hand and take you to your destination... or just sailing, on the pond for example, to taste oysters and a good white wine, a tielle, a pan-fried squid that you will have bought at the market or that a sailing cook will have concocted for the occasion. We are in contact with various people who can provide you with an oyster or seafood platter, a selection of cheeses and cured meats, local natural wines (or from a little further away), craft beers, or even complete menus or cocktail formulas: contact us for any project, we will try to respond to it as best we can and refer you to the right people if we cannot do it ourselves! At the dock, Anna Maria 4 is ideally located, a few steps from the very center of Sète while avoiding the pitfall of the festive neighborhood – so that the swirls are all that populates your dreams... Shopping at the halls, the covered market is of such quality that Michelin-starred chefs frequent it, oyster-white wine aperitif break, stroll through the shopping streets, days at the beach, sunset at the Pointe Courte, meal on one of the many terraces that the city offers, excursion to the marine cemetery, visit the Brassens Museum, the Paul-Valéry Museum, the CRAC (Regional Center of Contemporary Art), the MIAM (International Museum of Modest Arts), the Reservoir... In high season, the barge offers a hybrid formula, so you can enjoy the city as much as its surroundings. From Saturday to Wednesday morning, Anna Maria stays at the dock. Then it takes you on a cruise for three days and two nights. Depending on the winds, head to the Étang de Thau, Marseillan, towards the Pointe des Onglous and the entrance to the Canal du Midi, or directly on the Canal du Rhône to Sète, via Frontignan, the ponds and the Cathedral of Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone. On the way back, it can stop at Les Aresquiers, one of the most beautiful viewpoints to enjoy the sunset and swim. Return via the port of Sète, along the sea, for a last night at the dock. Of course, we can also consider longer formulas, up to Arles for example during the Rencontres photographiques, or in Avignon around the festival... But you will have to do it in advance, to be able to reserve the places at the dock! Please note: cruises are offered on certain dates and by reservation only. We will let you know the conditions and availability upon request. Rates will sometimes be offered without navigation, sometimes with: you will have to check! On site, you will be greeted by Pascale, who knows the city and the region inside out. In case of emergency or for any questions, she will remain on call and will be available throughout your stay. And on request, she can also organize tailor-made activities for you: paddle boarding on the pond, canoeing on the canals, visit and tasting at an oyster farm... Finally, you can plan to come by train without hesitation: the barge is a ten-minute walk from Sète TGV station. And of course there are buses or taxis if you are loaded or have reduced mobility. And if you come by car, you can drop off your things on the Quai de la République and then park your car in the large free parking lot located 200 meters away. Looking forward to hosting you on board!
