Roberta's is a well-known, respected and loved spot in Brooklyn. Their home-grown veg, stone-baked pizza, garden and takeaway make this a definite place to checkout if you're a foodie. They also have a couple of excellent organic and green grocery stores next door.

They don't just bake their own bread here, they mill their own flour! Delicious bread, cakes and coffee in a fantastic big industrial bakery, open to the public.

Il Laboratorio makes the most incredible different flavors of ice creams and sorbets. My personal favorite is malt. It changes all the time, and last time I visited, you were permitted to taste a maximum of two before you decide.. a difficult choice.

Sightseeing

Take the Tramway (cable car) from E 59th Street and 2nd Avenue, using your metrocard (just like the subway or the bus) and you will be whisked high across the East River in about 5 mins and dropped onto Roosevelt Island. The view of Manhattan is wonderful. Visit the dramatic Four Freedoms Park on the southern end of the island (closes at 5pm).

This is a tiny piece of Ireland, placed precariously on the edge of Manhattan. It's impressive, emotional and beautiful, and commemorates not just those who died in the Irish famine, but in famines throughout history around the world.
