Places to stay in Evie
Our house (Strathyre) is very much a well- loved family home, and is homely and comfortable. Its peaceful and spacious inside and out, and is filled with years of happy memories/collections from around the world Fishing, beaches, birdwatching, ancient sites NB - once you book, more detailed information becomes open to you on this site including directions, keys etc. Aurora Borealis from below my house https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9U6H_DGE1mN8gE6HptNrlw/videos
NB - START JUNE- END SEPTEMBER - WEEKLY+ BOOKINGS ONLY SAT -SAT OR ending OR starting on SAT (split weeks - 3 or 4 night bookings) Strathyre is a spacious family 'strictly non-smoking' home set in 5 acres of land with views over Boardhouse Loch. Plenty room inside and out for 6 people. One twin and two double bedrooms, large sitting room and large kitchen which WAS the original house 200 years ago! There is an ensuite shower room off double bedroom and a family bathroom, both of which are NOW totally remodelled as of October 2016!! We are sure a welcome updating! Guests have access to all areas of the house and land. There is one locked cupboard in the house where we store extra supplies etc. There is wifi throughout the house (though not fast as per all of Orkney!), TV and CD player. THERE IS NO DISHWASHER OR WASHING MACHINE. This is due to plumbing issue in kitchen so apologies about this, but we have no other option as our personal items are locked off in room with washing machine. We will endeavour to provide as much information as guests require/need for the perfect stay! We have a person locally who will be on hand for entry/departure and/or any problems. Orkney is lucky to have so many ancient sites of interest - Stone Age, Bronze Age, Vikings etc. Birdwatching, loch/sea fishing (free - no permits required) and beachcombing are fabulous. There are wonderful festivals - folk, classical and science. Not to mention pure air, incredible skies/seascapes and of course the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights!) You really need to have a car to stay in Strathyre or indeed Orkney as there is very limited public transport. Ample parking at the house. Good ferry connections to Scrabster and Aberdeen. Airport in Kirkwall where car hire is possible. Orkney in summer has very little darkness at all - very special. Of course the contrary is true in winter! This is a well loved family home - NOT a customised 'holiday home' so please expect, 'bumps, bruises and idiosyncrasies!' It is a very old house with natural stone walls and a wood burning stove and as a result can be DUSTY. If you have a DUST aversion perhaps this is not the house for you! Once you book exact location and all details on how to access the house including the very important house manual becomes available to you on Airbnb site. Please download this. Minimum 3 night bookings at other times. Why not stay at my sons beautiful Airbnb in Tain on way North? https://abnb.me/19vbLpjt0O

  • Irene's place is great - super location, excellent warm house and a fantastic host. We stayed in the middle of a gale but with the fire lit, home made bread from the aga and a glass of something warm made the visit very special

  • Irene’s place is conveniently located to all parts of the Orkney Islands. We travelled here, there and everywhere!

    Bethany2019-10-12T00:00:00Z
  • What a beautiful house and location and view. I cannot recommend Irene’s place highly enough if you are looking for a peaceful rural stay in Orkney, but with all the amenities of a modern house. Its close to the Neolithic and other historic sites and only about a 15-20 minute drive to either Kirkwall or Stromness - the latter of which is a beautiful little town. Be sure to go for a meal and drink at The Stromness Hotel lounge bar overlooking the harbour. But back to Irene’s place - we couldn’t have found a better place for our small family to stay for a few days. It is huge if you want some space to spread out and just lovely. Perfect.

  • This is a very spacious house in a beautiful and quiet location. It has a comfortable and lived in feel. The host was supportive without being intrusive. A "self clean " policy is followed which might not be to everyone's taste. The instructions on how to find the property were clear, but the access is tight and quite blind so make sure you have a good idea where you are looking for first.

    John2019-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic house, warm and family friendly. Great location, minutes from Brough of Birsay and Marwick Head. Our kids loved the toys and we loved the quiet. Highly recommended

    Tal2019-08-21T00:00:00Z
  • A great home in a great place. Thoroughly recommend both Strathyre and Orkney.

    Graham2019-08-17T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely, friendly welcoming home. Perfect to get away from it all and very convenient for some of Orkney's best neolithic sites.

    Alastair2019-08-11T00:00:00Z
  • A charming house where you feel like you're at home. The absence of a machine was not an inconvenience given the presence of a laundry in Kirkwall. To advise traditional musical evenings at The Reel café in the center of Kirkwall, accessible mostly to children.

  • Perfect place right in the middle of Kirkwall ! nice and warm, walking distance to the harbor, St. Magnus, shops, restaurants, etc. everything we could ask for in a Orkney Holiday! This newly converted stable/outbuilding has been turned into a beautifully finished, very comfortable, modern cottage. Complete with its very own unique flagstone roof. Situated just a 5 minute stroll from the Cathedral and town centre, and 10 minutes from the town harbour with a variety of cafes, pubs and restaurants on the way. The cottage itself is in a small square off Main Street, which despite its name is a very quiet side street. Off street parking area available.
Main street is a small one way street in the old part of Kirkwall. St Magnus Cathedral and the town centre are only a few minutes walk away.
  • Jimmy's place was ideal. Very cosy, and spotlessly clean, with great amenities, in a great location!

    Christopher2020-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • Cozy, comfortable, and convenient! If you’re looking for somewhere to stay in Kirkwall, it’s hard to imagine a better spot. Easy walking distance to the heart of town, picturesque inside and out, comfortable couch and bed - an unexpected bonus was all the natural light from the skylights! Next time I’m in Orkney, I’m checking for this spot first!

    Alex2020-03-13T00:00:00Z
  • Jimmy's place was very clean and well presented. A comfortable bed and a well equipped kitchen for simple cooking. The location is very handy and the flat has a cosy atmosphere, with local info about the area to. I will stay again.

    Jedidiah & Nicolette2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • This was a great, and stylish, place to stay. It had everything we could need, including extra's like milk, tea and coffee, and it felt like all the space had been used. It was lovely and light as well as being well heated too. This made it feel really cosy. It is about five minutes walk from the centre of Kirkwall and was also within close walking distance of the major supermarkets. We only met Jimmy very briefly but he was very friendly and it was clear he was more than happy to help if we had any issues. The only drawback was that parking directly outside the accommodation was within a very small, and tight, space. This might be challenging for larger/ multiple vehicles. While this was not an issue for us, it did appear that there was ample parking spaces in town and on the roads close by. All in all my partner and I really enjoyed our stay here and would definitely come back in a heartbeat!

    James2020-03-06T00:00:00Z
  • A fantastic little cottage which has everything you need. Faultless and highly recommended for any stay in Kirkwall. Very accommodating host. Cannot recommend highly enough!

    Martin2020-02-27T00:00:00Z
  • A modern, well equipped, spotlessly clean accommodation, perfectly situated for exploring Orkney and just a short walk into Kirkwall. Highly recommended.

  • The Cottage was the perfect place to spend a few nights on Orkney. We loved the compact nature of the cottage which met our needs and some. Jimmy was an excellent host who was easily contactable and supportive of our requests. We will be back!

  • We stayed at John's cabin for 4 nights in August. John was kind and friendly and so helpful about the local area and even gave us a lift to Birsay and lent us bikes to cycle back. The beds were comfy and the space was clean and cosy. We had our own bathroom and the kitchen facilities we plenty to cook simple meals. If you are looking for a simple stay somewhere wild and beautiful, this is perfect! We'd definitely stay again.

  • Staying at John and Victoria’s will remain one of the best Airbnb experiences we ever had. They are so welcoming and helpful, and we had a wonderful time talking and sharing with them. Also, we simply LOVED staying in the hut which is so comfortable despite the frequent rain. We are already thinking of coming back next year. If you’re looking for some place to escape from too much civilisation and phone signals, this is the place to be.

    Melissa2019-08-19T00:00:00Z
  • Please see previous review. It’s lovely. We would recommend to anyone and will be going back next year.

  • John and Victoria are hosts that went above and beyond to make stay and wonderful and memorable experience. We couldn’t want for kinder, more generous or friendly hosts. The camping hut is in a beautiful location with stunning views overlooking sea and islands. It was warm cosy and tucked away with its own enclosed garden. Facilities including shower and private loo exceeded expectations. The kitchen was well equipped and impeccably clean. We would recommend this to anyone looking to explore this beautiful corner of the world.

    Oliver2019-07-20T00:00:00Z

  • We can highly recommend the Cart House at Howe. John has created the perfect space for singles or two-somes looking for a getaway. The twin beds were very comfortable, and the space is decorated with an eclectic sense of witty style. The kitchen is functional (although we really only ate breakfast there) and the shower room has plentiful hot water. The Cart House is warm even when the wind is blowing off the bay, and the view is spectacular. John is friendly and helpful, and every suggestion he made for us was a winner. Thanks for a great visit John!

    Fiona2019-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • A great central location to visit most of the interesting sites Mainland Orkney has to offer. The Carthouse is a cosy place and contains all the neccesary equipment to have a great stay. After spending 5 nights on a campsite we particularily enjoyed the warm showers! Great place, especially if you love chickens!

    Jeske2019-08-29T00:00:00Z
  • The spot is a gem with a great view, a stylish space, and helpful hosts. We loved the artwork in the space as well as the chickens and cows that came to visit. We would stay again!

    Jacqueline2019-08-02T00:00:00Z
  • We had a a fantastic time staying in Cart House enjoying all the detail John had put into in making it such a wonderful place. The views are fabulous, the kitchens is well equipped and we could even use the washing machine. John gave us lots of advice on what to see and do in the area and we were so happy that he pointed out rock pools where we went for a swim on a sunny day and to the exact spot where to see Puffins. We hope to come back and stay here again!

    Ron2019-07-23T00:00:00Z
  • Had a great stay at John's place. Was cosy, clean and quirky. John also offered some great tips on places to visit and was very helpful!

    Graeme2019-06-26T00:00:00Z
  • Best holiday I have ever had - John & Victoria were amazing hosts, attentive but unobtrusive and they went out of their way to ensure I had a great stay, explaining how everything worked & giving me tips on the local area & things to see. I was visiting Orkney for a bit of peace & quiet plus the amazing scenery & wonderful wildlife.... and it didn't disappoint. John & Victoria's accommodation was a wonderful place to enjoy the island and relax in the evening... they had even left me fresh eggs, which were amazing. The Bothy is quirky, comfortable & has everything you need for a relaxing stay. Chickens & cats all added to the welcoming vibe.... I had a great time & really didn't want to leave.... it was a wonderful week on the island, which was largely due to where I was staying. I can't recommend John & Victoria's place highly enough to anybody wanting the appreciate the beauty of the area & the sea view was spectacular..... Thank you so much folks - you really made my stay amazing!

  • The Cart House is a perfect little bolthole in a lovely location with views across to the sea. It is beautifully appointed with lots of interesting vintage artefacts and paintings, everything works, there is plenty of hot water, it is warm and there is good parking. On arrival John left us some of delicious, new-laid eggs from his flock of friendly, free-range chickens. He is a very hospitable host with excellent local knowledge and guided us to locations where we could see local wildlife and archeology and get the best local food. Evie itself is idyllic, close to some important sights for birds and archeology and has a little local shop and a cafe. The landscapes are stunning. We had a perfect stay and were sorry to leave.

The Cottage at Eviedale, is tastefully decorated traditional Orkney cottage. it sleeps 3/4 people. The living dining kitchen has a coal burning stove, and all the comforts of home. There is parking on site, we are only a few minutes walk to a small local shop with post office facilities. Eviedale is a short distance from the lovely sandy Evie beach and the Eynhallow sound, with fantastic views over to the isle of Rousey, we are only around 25 mins drive from both Kirkwall and Stromness.
A really cosy traditional cottage in a lovely location, a quite and tranquil setting near the coast. A home from home in a rural location, located in the heart of Evie Village. The Cottage has free wifi, tv with freeview satellite, ipod dock and cd player, digital radio and many other comforts. Please note Eviedale is a no smoking site
Evie is a small village near the coast, overlooking the Eynhallow sound and over towards the island of Rousey. We are close by the Broch of Gurness, an iron age settlement, which is run by Historic Scotland. We are between Finstown and Birsay at the top of the island, do visit the Brough of Birsay, check tidal times first.
  • Eviedale is extremely cozy and comfortable, easy to find, and well equipped. Philippa is a superb host, extremely friendly and communicative. Highly recommended!

    Alison2019-10-10T00:00:00Z
  • A cosy, well equipped, self contained cottage in Evie. Philippa is a great host. She met us when we first arrived making us very welcome. She explained aspects of the cottage and provided personal recommendations/suggestions for exploring Orkney. We found the cottage to be very clean and quiet but well located, with a beach within walking distance. The last night we were fortunate to have fantastic views of stars and the milky way.

    Brian2019-09-27T00:00:00Z
  • The Cottage is a perfect hideaway on Orkney. Accommodation is lovely, beach down the road, friendly and helpful hosts - and we were there just in time to catch the Bistro before it closed at the end of the season so we got to try Ian's sourdough pizzas and Philippa's fantastic desserts. Eviedale is a wonderful, welcoming place with a real sense of warmth.

    Lee2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • We had a really great time at Philippa's place - very comfortable & well equipped.

    David2019-06-29T00:00:00Z
  • Quite the most perfect location from which to explore mainland Orkney - so so comfortable and the Bistro which is on site is an added bonus - great food and ambience.

    Theresa2019-05-23T00:00:00Z
  • We have loved our stay at the Cottage. The accommodation was beautifully decorated and the perfect cosy place to stay after our windy cycle ride from Stromness. The views from this part of the islands are spectacular- some of the most scenic cycle rides we have ever taken. Would highly recommend the sourdough bread and pizza from the Bistro next door. Philippa and Ian were excellent hosts and were very helpful and welcoming. We would love to stay again.

    Holly2019-05-15T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely cosy cottage, clean and nicely decorated, very comfortable beds, friendly helpful hosts and amazing location for exploring Orkney. Really enjoyed the fudge and the lovely sourdough bread. Would highly recommend staying there and hope to visit again in the future.

  • Eviedale Cottage is a lovely cosy cottage in an excellent location for exploring the Orkney Islands. It is a traditional cottage which is beautifully decorated and finished to a high standard. The cottage was spotlessly clean and very well equipped. The bed was one of the most comfortable I have ever slept in and the bed and bathroom linen were very high quality. Access arrangements were easy and clear information and instructions provided. Thanks very much Phillippa we enjoyed our stay.

  • Excellent location to get out and about Orkney. Plenty of places for food and drink nearby and a stones throw from the bus to go further afield. The flat was spotless and well kitted out.

    Joe2020-03-04T00:00:00Z
  • Colin’s flat is modern, clean and perfectly situated. Colin is a welcoming and helpful host.

  • A warm, comfy flat which has everything you need. It's in a central location down a quiet lane off the main street within easy walking distance of all Kirkwall's amenities. You can park nearby on the main street for limited times but there is a free car park within 2 minute's walk on Junction Road so we never had any issues parking. Would definitely stay again 👍

  • This was a great Airbnb stay with a downtown location within walking distance of the harbour. I would definitely stay here again.

Eastbank House is a quietly situated Georgian house, close to the centre of town. We offer single, double and triple en suit rooms. The rooms are quiet and peaceful with towels and bedding provided. Each room has it's own small but private toilet and shower.
The house was built in 1824 as a family house and we have converted it into a friendly meeting place for travellers of all ages.
We are situated close to the town centre of Kirkwall. The closest shops are just a short drive or 5 minute walk from here. The town offers cozy cafes, restaurants, pubs, a weekend night club as well as a tourist information, bus depot and ferry transport to the outer isles.
  • Great location. Friendly host. Perfect for a short stay.

  • This was my second time staying at Malcolms. He kindly picked my up from the ferry terminal and dropped my off in the center in the morning, as I had a heavy suitcase. Lovely all day breakfast offered as well. Malcolm is very helpful with anything you need. Room was lovely and cosy and quite spacious. Amazing stay

    Emma2020-02-14T00:00:00Z
  • You will find a very helpful and well informed host in Malcolm at East Bank hostel. The house is situated within an easy walk of the centre of Kirkwall. I had a comfortable single room with en suite bathroom. Renovations are almost complete in the large kitchen, which is well equipped for self catering. This is a great hostel to stay in while you explore the wonderful Orkney Islands.

    Pauline2020-01-22T00:00:00Z
  • Malcolm is an excellent host who will do everything he can possibly do to make sure your stay goes as you would wish.

    Timothy 2020-01-17T00:00:00Z
  • Genial host, private space, but with the opportunity to mix with other guests if you wish. Close to everything and on a bus route, but nice and quiet.

    Dawn2019-12-14T00:00:00Z
  • Malcolm very kindly let me check in at the last minute when my ferry was canceled and was an excellent host.

    Allie2019-10-26T00:00:00Z
  • If you want 5* accom, then dont stay, but if you want 3*+ accom and local info that is not often given at 5* hotels, then consider Malcolms place. He offered and I accepted him picking me up at 11pm at the ferry, and dropping me back 4 days later for the 11.45pm ferry. He, and other guests were there to help and be involved with my stay, or leave me to my devices at other times. In other words I was able to feel what Orkney life was all about. The bed was great, the shower hot in my own en-suite, the full use of the kitchen and endless coffee / toast / fruit, was the tipping point to this being a great experience.

    Hayden2019-10-14T00:00:00Z
  • Nice place, just a short walk from the centre. The kitchen was a little messy cause he is renovating and looks it’s gonna be a very nice one :)

  • A beautiful house in a lovely location.

    Sarah2019-07-06T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely and comfortable house, tastefully decorated with good sea views. Coal fire is cosy if the weather closes in and there is a fun pizza restaurant a short walk away - BYO alcohol and better to book (we had a short wait for a table). Nice walk to beach and to fine pre-Viking ruins (broch of Gurness). Good for birdlife too.

    Matthew2019-05-24T00:00:00Z
  • Linda's cottage has been beautifully restored and, while off the beaten track, is well worth it. It was very comfortable and made a great home base for exploring Mainland Orkney. We found that six days were not enough!

    Christa2018-06-07T00:00:00Z
  • This lovely restored cottage is in a great location for visiting some of the archaeological sites but equally as good for visiting some of the great RSPB birding sites. The cottage is also a short walk to the local beach. I kept being drawn to the lovely views- magnificent skies and sunsets from the kitchen and living room windows. The house, its ambience and location contributed to a lovely week's stay. There is so much to see and do on Orkney. Weather was also very good.

    Kate2018-05-19T00:00:00Z
  • The house is very spacious, well equipped and beautifully decorated. The location is ideal for touring if you have a car, there are many things to see and do. The walk down to the coastline close to the house is picturesque with amazing views.

    Isla2018-04-20T00:00:00Z
  • Linda and Simon have carried out a sympathetic restoration and renovation of the cottage, providing a clean and comfortable space, in a great location. Period details combined with modern amenities make Drill Hall Cottage the perfect holiday home. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here.

Enjoy all the wonderful attractions that Orkney offers from this lovely spacious shabby chic house in central Kirkwall. This comfortable house is ideal for a couple, it provides a king size bed, a shower over the bath, washing machine with drying green, air to water heating, off street parking 30 meters away tho you may park on the street. Unfortunately we can not accept pets on our property. Local amenities, Hospital, and historical buildings etc within walking distance( 8-10 minute walk)
This shabby chic type little house is ideal for a couple looking for a central location that will allow them freedom to enjoy the many musical and arts festivals, historical, archaeological sites, the beautiful islands and countryside, visiting family or investigating your family tree. There is a well equipped bright kitchen, with a fridge freezer, cooker, microwave, table and chairs, washing machine with a drying green in the back garden to let the Orcadian fresh winds dry your clothes leaving them lovely and soft? Many guests enjoy sitting at the table watching the summer evening sun or wind mills in the distance. Although the house is heated by air to water heating we provide a small heater should you feel a bit chilly after a brisk walk along the shores. There is a tv. If you would rather read, there is selection of books about Orkney which are there for your enjoyment while you are resident but they stay in the house. We also have a book swap system , when you finish your book and need another do feel free to swap your one for another. We provide some games eg, Scrabble, Jenga, cards etc. We love our long light nights here in Orkney but a few guests have found it difficult to sleep, so we have fitted the window with a blackout blind in addition to the curtains. Should you need to hang your clothes there is a built in wardrobe, you will find the iron and ironing board in here too. For your other clothes there is a shelved cupboard and a drawer under the bed. After a day in the fresh air you may fancy a long soak in the bath. There is a shower over the bath if you prefer that. We do not have off road parking but you can park in the street or there is a carpark diagonally across from the house.
The house is central; the centre of town, shops, eating places, bars, bus station , harbour are about a 10 minute walk, the hospital is close by being about a 5 minute walk.
  • Nice appartment well equiped and warm welcome. Quiet area not far from the center. Thanks to Mary

  • Perfect place to stay in Kirkwall. Easy walk in to town sights, shops and restaurants. Lovely clean and stylish space. Great back garden. Would absolutely stay again.

  • Thank you Mary for providing such a lovely place for us to stay while in the Orkney Islands. From the start, you confirmed that we had arrived safe and sound and that all was well. We were reassured that if we needed to contact you, you were readily available for support. We loved your cottage with its front and back gardens with its wild flowers and herbs growing freely. This was enhanced by the books/maps/brochures you have made available including some local authors/poets and guide books of historical places around the Orkney Islands. In addition, your 'home' had absolutely everything we needed including an amazingly well stocked kitchen, washing machine and bathroom with heated towel rails. Despite it being a little cooler during our time here, we were able to keep lovely and cozy with the heating. A thousand thanks for your hospitality and giving us such wonderful memories of Kirkwall and Orkney.

  • After a day of adventurizationing (yes, it is a word :-)) it was always like coming home. If you're going to stay at Kirkwall this is the place!

    Darlene2019-09-14T00:00:00Z
  • It's a cosy, clean and warm cottage with all that is required for a short or longer stay. The hill from the shops can be challenging if walking but a taxi costs £4 from Tescos. Lovely views and a warm welcome from Mary. We would stay there again.

    Kim2019-09-10T00:00:00Z
  • Very comfortable, feels homely. Great amount of space for two travelers. Has everything you need, we were very happy to come back 'home' in the evening and cook dinner. We were also very happy to be able to catch up on our washing. 10 mins walk into town and supermarket, unfortunately a walk uphill back. Highly recommended.

  • Cosy, bright and tasteful. What a wonderful little pad this is. It has given us a very comfortable base for our exploration of these extraordinary isles.

    Anthony2019-08-22T00:00:00Z
  • The accommodation is very well located in a quiet residential area of Kirkwall. Everything important is within walking distance. The house is equipped with everything you need. Mary takes care of her guests. For the first morning milk was already in the fridge, tea and coffee were ready. The late arrival was unproblematic.

Enjoy stunning panoramic sea views from this romantic, rustic one bedroom cottage. Located in an idyllic rural setting, The Little Bothy is the perfect location from which to explore Orkney and offers luxurious accommodation for two people. Located approximately 20 minutes by road from Kirkwall or Stromness, and only 45 minutes from St Margaret’s Hope.
Set within an old Croft, it has been restored in 2018 with all mod cons for a perfect stay. It holds onto the character of Orkney, with intricate details and local traditions.
Rural farm location, peaceful and secluded, with far reaching views across the sea and islands.
  • Stunning.

  • Penny's excellent reviews are well deserved. We loved the way that Penny and Dave had thought of everything a traveller might need, but couldn't pack, to make a comfy stay. We also loved the luxury injected into tasteful design at The Little Bothy which was just perfect. The views were stunning and the island(s) fascinating. You can not fail to enjoy your time at The Little Bothy.

    Veronica2020-02-10T00:00:00Z
  • We just spent THE MOST fantastic week on Orkney and the little bothy and we are in love! It's a tiny slice of luxury and glamour and we can't wait to return. All the little touches were perfect and Penny was a wonderfully gracious hostess!

    Amy2019-12-23T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful stay at the Little Bothy - it’s truly an amazing place to unwind and relax in front of the incredible view. The place itself is full of thoughtful design and pictures don’t do justice to the incredible view and the homely feel of the place. Highly recommend staying here for anyone looking to visit Orkney! Hosts are so friendly and nice - would love to go back again!

    Zeynep2019-11-29T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely one of the most beautiful and peaceful places I have stayed. The bothy is truly magical and Penny has thought of everything. I don't usually go back to the same place twice but I'd come back here for the peace, quiet and magic of the Orkneys and the bothy. I can recommend visiting in Winter.. where the only people at the sites we visited so had them all to ourselves !! Thank you Penny and David!

    Alexandra2019-11-23T00:00:00Z
  • Everything is to a very high standard. Our stay was magical

    Barbara2019-09-24T00:00:00Z
  • The "Little Bothy" is a fantastic place to stay, and Penny is a perfect host. The bothy has all the facilities you need (and more), its amazing clean and is well located to explore the Orkney mainland and access the various ferry terminals... if you're going to visit Orkney - you MUST stay here!

    Christopher2019-08-28T00:00:00Z
  • The Little Bothy is a haven of peace, comfort and inspiration. It is a wondrous place for exploring the treasures of Orkney in a characterful space away from the madding crowd.

BRECKLANDS is a two bedroomed cottage set in its own four acre field in the parish of Rendall which is twelve miles from both Kirkwall and Stromness. From the secluded site there are magnificent views across the sea with the island of Shapinsay to the East and Kirkwall to the South. BRECKLANDS is highly insulated and the ground floor has underfloor heating from a ground source heat pump. The upstairs bathroom has electric underfloor heating and the bedroom has an electric panel heater.
Sitting in the sun lounge, it’s not unusual to see a pair of hen harriers or owls hunting for Orkney voles in the field. The nearby beach at Hinderayre is an easy walk and the numerous archeological sites in the West Mainland are a short drive away.
  • Really beautiful house and setting . Very clean and comfortable . Evelyn was very helpful

    Hilary2019-09-14T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful stay. The property is lovely - spacious, sparkling clean and feels brand new (although the design is nice and traditional). We really appreciated the supplies Evelyn had stocked the house with, and the guidance she gave about Orkney before our trip. Top host!

  • We had a wonderful time staying at Ruth’s place-it is exactly as described and we felt very comfortable. Ruth was out of town during our stay and still made sure the apartment was all ready for us and responded almost immediately to my questions so we felt totally taken care of, even from a distance! The location is perfect for exploring the Neolithic sites and a ten minute drive from Kirkwall. Highly recommend! Thanks so much for your warm hospitality, Ruth, and wishing you all the best!

Ruth was an excellent host with good knowledge of things to see and do and was very helpful and went above and beyond to assist me when I had to change my ferry booking due to a change in circumstance. The location was great as was a good base for getting around the island with my car. Would definitely recommend.

  • Finstown might be a bit small compared to Kirkwall, but it is in a very central location on Mainland so it's quite easy to reach all the big sightseeing spots and get around the island in general. The room and the big bathroom were both very nice and clean. Amanda made us feel very welcome and we had some very nice chats with her during our stay. If you want to experience the real Orkneys away from all the hectic tourists this is it. Oh and don't forget to check out Leigh's food truck!

  • This is the perfect spot for a visit to Orkney! Spotless, very comfortable bed, roomy and attractive space. Kathryn is welcoming, responsive and clear in her communications.

    Kelly2017-05-27T00:00:00Z
  • Katheryn was really welcoming when we arrived, and the room was exactly as described. We really enjoyed our stay, and would definitely recommend here to anyone wanting a private and cosy place while in Kirkwall.

    Kevin2017-01-06T00:00:00Z
  • We had an excellent time here. The accommodation had everything we needed for the weekend and is situated a short walk away from all the shops, restaurants and bars. We were glad we chose to stay here rather than in the hotel our friends stayed at as it was so peaceful on the Friday/Saturday night unlike the hotel. Kathryn had no one in after us so let us leave a little later which suited us perfectly. The place was spotless and we would definitely recommend staying here.

    Amy2016-11-13T00:00:00Z
  • Super nice little apartment with perfect location. Nice big bed and although with bread, milk, etc. as Kathryn had taken care of. Clean and tidy all over. Only Kathryn's apartment on the warmest

    Lotte2016-10-19T00:00:00Z
  • Kathryn's place was just right - very comfortable for a short stay, quiet and reasonably well-equipped. Michael was very helpful with fixing a minor tv problem. Highly recommended.

    John2016-10-09T00:00:00Z
  • Katryn was very helpful, even picking is up on a rainy night from the ferry terminal and giving us a mini-tour of Kirkwall on the way home. The apartment itself has all ameneties needed including very fast wi-fi and Sky TV and was super-clean as well. From the apartment, which is in a residential area it is only a 10 minute walk to the harbour and shopping district.

    André2016-09-27T00:00:00Z
  • Kathryn welcomed us with her lovely daughter. She showed us around the unit and pointed out all the amenities. Her unit had everything we could want. Her description was accurate in her listing and even better. She was kind enough to let us use her clothes washer and dryer. We were close enough to the town center to either walk or drive. There was also tourist information available in the unit. We also enjoyed the little touches like coffee, tea, sugar, milk, cookies and bread for toast. It was a wonderful stay.

  • Great location and hospitality! Sue was very helpful in directing us to various sights to see and restaurants while on Orkney. She also made sure our stay was very comfortable by providing an extra heater for the chilly November nights. Sue and her husband (Ian) definitely added to our memorable time on Orkney.

    Amanda2019-11-14T00:00:00Z
  • Quite simply the best Air BnB you can ask for. It’s my second time staying at the schoolhouse and it’s just fabulous. The hosts add nice touches like fudge, whiskey and robes that make all the difference and the room has its own private entrance and breakfast making en-suite. Perfectly situated within view of the Standing Stones and Maeshowe. This is where to stay when visiting Orkney!

We are situated in a very quiet residential area. You will be greeted by our friendly Labrador Kassie as well as us. We are in a lovely quiet safe neighbourhood.
  • This AirBnB is extremely comfortable and is well located near the harbour in Stromness. Lynn made us very welcome, even meeting us from the ferry in the pouring rain. From there we were easily able to explore Orkney using a hired car , from a local garage.

    Elizabeth2019-10-12T00:00:00Z
  • Nia-Roo is a great stay on a remarkable island. Lynn and her capable assistants provide a welcoming and attractive stay. The room has 2 comfortable leather lounges and the bed is very good. The windows are double glazed and the entrance has the traditional double doors. The bathroom was modern and very clean. The location is good for travel to Skara Brae UNESCO locations because it’s 20 minutes drive closer than Kirkwall. It’s a pleasant 10 minute walk along the harbour to Stromness town centre. Both pubs I tried (the Stromness Hotel and the Ferry Inn) offered very good food and service. There are also good shops and cafes in Stromness. I found great coffee each day at the Bayleaf Delicatessen. To top it off the Stromness Museum is an absolute gem.

    Barbara2019-09-24T00:00:00Z

This is a cosy cottage with a double and a twin room, a comfortable living room, kitchen and bathroom. It also has a sunroom area with patio doors to the garden, the perfect location to watch the sunset. Set in stunning countryside, but only a short walk from the village of Dounby with a hotel and an excellent restaurant, a small supermarket, Post Office and two craft shops. Or a stroll down beside the Loch to the Merkister Hotel for a drink or a meal at their excellent restaurant.
It is perfectly situated for touring Orkney and is within 6 miles of the major archaeological sites including the standing stones and Skara Brae. A great location for walking, bird watching or just relaxing.
  • Lovely cosy cottage, well equipped kitchen and friendly, helpful hosts. It was wet and windy when we arrived and I was a bit concerned about how warm we would be in the cottage, especially as we had our two year toddler with us. It turned out to be very easy to keep the stove lighting and the place held the heat really well... Carolyn was very helpful, even providing us with a box of lovely toys for our son. Location quite central for exploring the west mainland. Very happy with the stay, highly recommend

  • Enjoyed a wonderful week staying in Dene Cottage. The cottage is very well situated amongst farmland teeming with wildlife and centrally placed for easy access to key sites in Orkney. The house is itself is very cosy and tastefully furnished and well provided. Carolyn was at hand to answer our questions and provided tips for places to visit. Would highly recommend the house to other AirBnB’rs looking for a quite house with lovely views across rural meadows and farmland.

The Vale is in easy walking distance to all the amenities in Kirkwall. Easy access to room on ground floor. Off street parking.
  • James’ place is just a short walk away from the centre of town and from the bus station. There is parking on site if you have a car which is not always the case in Kirkwall. The house is quite new, spotlessly clean, with excellent bathroom facilities. The single room, although not large, is very well appointed. I particularly appreciated the small refrigerator and the comfortable bed. James and his wife were very welcoming and provided advice on travel options, where to eat etc.

  • I was well looked after by a very friendly couple. Great location, only a short walk to all of Kirkwall's amenities. Lots of local knowledge from Jimmy to help plan your stay & make the most of it.

  • James is an excellent and friendly host, and there are many nice little touches such as a minifridge in the room which is restocked with milk and fruit daily. The house is located on a quiet little street, but is only a few minutes' walk from the centre of Kirkwall. It will be my first choice for a place to stay if I make it back to Orkney again.

  • Well located BnB in Kirkwall (it isn't a big town), the room was spacy enough for 1 person, everything was clean, tasty breakfast in the morning, James and his wife are very pleasant, I can only recommend them

  • James was the perfect host - super accomodating (I’d arrived early and was able to park at the property) and has a wealth of Orkney knowledge. The rooms were absolutely clean and well furnished with the basics - the kettle was a lovely touch. Large bathroom also spotlessly clean. The location is perfect with a short walk to the centre of town - two supermarkets are also nearby. The breakfasts were lovely also. I am so pleased and impressed with the house, location and hospitality that I definitely want to return! Thanks again!

A bright bedroom in a comfortable modern house, set in a rural yet convenient location with stunning views.
Lovely bright spacious double room with ample storage space. All bed linen and towels supplied. The family bathroom is shared between two bedrooms, You also have access to a toilet downstairs. The lounge is equipped with a large tv or you may choose to simply appreciate the view! We have now added a hot tub available for guest use, ideal way to relax after a full day sightseeing! Conveniently situated to maximise the stunning views towards the Hoy Hills. There is tea, coffee and milk available along with basic continental breakfast of cereal, yoghurt and fruit served from our kitchen.
Although we are situated in a rural location there is a co-op, pharmacy, post office, craft gift shop along with an Orkney jeweller in the local village of Dounby, which is a 5 min drive or 20 min leisurely walk. We are also lucky to have two fab hotels (Merkister and Smithfield) serving lunches and dinners using local produce, again both can be reached 5 mins by car or 20 min leisurely walk. Both Kirkwall or Stromness can be reached in 20 mins by car. We are conveniently located to explore all of the Neolithic sites that Orkney has to offer.
  • Great views from this Air BnB and well located to get to the main prehistoric sites. The house is beautiful with great facilities too. Make sure you check your map in advance as apple maps got lost!

  • Amanda and Neil have a great place. Fantastic location, modern and cosy at the same time, spotlessly clean and what a view from the guest lounge 😍 10 out of 10 from me 👍

    David2019-10-14T00:00:00Z
  • Set in the rolling beauty of the Orkney landscape, this is an eminently stylish and spacious spare room, in a lovely house. Amanda, was such a bundle of friendliness and kindness, that we had a lovely time meeting her and, oh, I did I mention the Hot Tub is amazeballs!

    William2019-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • This is the perfect place! The location is ideal for exploring the island - everything is just a short drive away. The nearby village of Dounby has everything you could need and the house is easy to get to. The space is really lovely and it’s great to take a soak in the hot tub after a day of hiking in the Orkney weather. Best of all, Amanda and Neil are accommodating and kind hosts - with great local tips!

  • Great place to stay!

    Louisa2019-08-08T00:00:00Z
  • We felt so welcomed at Amanda’s, there is no word strong enough to describe how much we loved our stay. The house is very well designed, clean and tidy. The bedroom was big enough, the bed comfortable, and the bedsheets were so soft we had a hard time getting out of bed! The brand new spa with that great view was amazing after a long day. We had more than we expected. Amanda even nicely let us use their bbq. She had very good advises as well. No hesitations, go there! You won’t be disappointed.

    Julien2019-08-05T00:00:00Z
  • The accommodation is very spacious and quiet with a fantastic view. The place a good and central starting point. Amanda and Nils are great and welcoming hosts. We would book again anytime.
