Places to stay in Brandywine
Imagine relaxing on the front porch of a cabin on a hill and watching the sun set on the mountains. The sky darkens; crickets chirp; nature's night sounds are all you hear. The Milky Way comes into view and stars twinkle pleasantly. Sheep baaah in the distance. No technology distracts from the moment. No demands of life tax you. This is evening at the tiny house. Though it's off-grid, you'll find that there's little extra work involved. It's set up so you can just come and relax.
This cabin is perfect for you if you like to feel like you are camping, but don't want to set up the tent and haul in all the stuff. We like to camp comfortably too, so we fixed it all up for you to enjoy. The cabin/tiny house is off-grid-- no electric or running water. We provide a queen bed and all the bedding and bath linens. The shower stall in the bathroom has a hook for a camp shower (bag-style camp shower is provided). The toilet is a composting toilet- not a stinky outhouse! It is very easy to use. Just follow the directions that will be laying on the toilet lid. There is also a sink area for hand washing. Your first 10 gallon of water will be in the cabin. If you need more water, you are more than welcome to access the outdoor faucet on the back side of our dwelling. The cabin has a gas heater so that you can camp any time of the year without freezing! You will need to walk a couple hundred yards uphill from the parking area to the cabin. It is a leisurely 3 minute walk. We will be happy to help you carry your luggage if we are available. All of the "glamping" gear is quite easy to use; but if you have a question about anything at all, please reach out. We will be happy to help you.
Spruce Knob Seneca Rocks Recreation Area is outside of our front door or back door. Endless hiking, scenery, and rock climbing are right here. There is skiing, train rides, caverns, and more close by.
  • Lovely refuge from the noise of everyday life in the city. We slept like babies with only the sound of the wind and occasional far away echo of sheep. Amazing view on top of a mountain and very sweet hosts that are next door for any issues.

  • The brunks really thought of everything. Great views, great area, great vacation. Thank you very much.

    Adam2020-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • Great location for a weekend getaway without any WiFi or service. Endless places to explore in the surrounding area

    Justin2020-03-11T00:00:00Z
  • It was so much fun staying in the tiny house! The space heater kept it toasty and we never missed electricity at all, save for our lanterns and head lamps. Outside it was a beautiful view in every direction. We cooked meals on the Coleman stove and enjoyed the bright full moon. We came to see Spruce Knob and Seneca Rocks, which are fairly close by. Kent, Cynthia and Marissa were the greatest of hosts, super duper nice and friendly. We will definitely bookmark this place for a future visit!!!

    John2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • Kent, Cynthia, and Marissa are absolutely lovely hosts. They greeted us and even offered to help us carry our belongings. Their property/home was just as described, if not more! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at their tiny little cabin and plan to be returning soon! 10/10 hosts!

    Paige2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • A great little escape! Quiet and beautiful with hosts that thought of everything.

    Matthew2020-02-21T00:00:00Z
  • This tiny home was perfect for me and my girlfriends little Valentines getaway! Beautiful to see snow on the mountains in the morning and sit around the firepit at night. The hosts we're great and make sure you are as comfortable as possible.

    Gavin2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • This place was everything we could’ve wanted and more! Best AirBnB experience yet. Extremely clean and perfectly sized. Kent and Cynthia thought of everything for a location without running and electric. Candles, fire extinguisher spray, portable shower, water heater, wall map, wall heater, extra blankets... They even left a stack of wood for us to make a fire. It was warm and cozy even in the snow. They were upfront about the lack of cell phone service and very communicative and helpful letting us know how to get there and use their WiFi. The view is gorgeous and in a very safe location. A quick 10 min drive to Seneca Rocks. We will definitely be returning down the line. Thank you for everything!

This cute one-room cabin tucked in the trees is perfect for two people. The idea behind this cabin is to offer an economical glamping experience. You will be comfortably immersed in nature with wildlife all around, but you won't have to sleep in a leaky tent on the hard ground and freeze!! We are the closest rental to Spruce Knob, a local attraction with great hiking and views. Other nearby attractions include Seneca Caverns, Seneca Rocks, Nelson Rocks, and Dolly Sods.
Get lost from the distractions of technology and the stress of life and spend quality time with your loved ones-- without draining your bank account! --This is a one-room cabin. TAKE NOTE: we are remodeling! When we open this spring, the cabin will be equipped with a regular queen bed instead of the sofa bed! -The kitchenette has basic cooking and eating utensils and linens, as well as a small frig (like a motel would have), microwave, single-burner hot-plate, and coffee pot. -- The bathroom has fresh bath linens and a hot shower. --Still wishing for a taste of camping though? We provide you with that too! Outside, you can grill and have a picnic with the fire pit, picnic table, and park-style charcoal grill available.
Our other two cabins and lots of woods are all that is close! Hiking and scenery in abundance!
  • This was an incredible trip. 10/10 would stay again.

    Chris2019-11-11T00:00:00Z
  • The cabin was in pristine condition when we arrived, and Kent, Cynthia and Marissa had the light on for us, which was lovely considering we got in so late. Great location and view. We made sure to bring all of our food, which i would recommend to others as well. We hope to come back!

    Katherine2019-11-03T00:00:00Z
  • The cabin is a gem. The view from every window was beautiful. The place is so clean and decorated perfectly. If you need a getaway from the city it is perfect.

    Jacqueline2019-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • Great little cabin off the road. Enjoyed quiet evenings on the deck. Had all the essentials we needed to go off the grid for a couple days. Really appreciated the coffee and fireplace when it cooled off in the evenings. Super clean and overall a wonderful stay!!

    Rebekah2019-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • The little cabin in the woods is perfect to get away from the hustle and bustle of life. No cell. No WiFi. Franklin, Seneca Rocks, & top of Spruce Knob all had WiFi or cell service. The location of the cabin is perfect for getting out and exploring the hills of West Virginia. Coming back to water and electricity allows you to enjoy nature while still having some creature comforts we’ve all become so used to. Would definitely stay here again to explore more of the area.

    Eric2019-09-10T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect place for a quiet get away in the forest. Perfect location to see the sunset from the top of Spruce Knob every night!

    Tom2019-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • This. Was. Perfect! My wife and I recently got married and made this our honeymoon. Self Check-in was very quick and easy. We hiked at Seneca Rocks that’s fairly close by. We even cooked a nice meal in the fire pit that’s in front of the cabin. We look forward to coming here again.

    Duane2019-08-19T00:00:00Z
  • Excellent place for a quick get away. Place is very clean and is within an hour drive of countless places to hike/bike/swim etc.

Welcome to our cozy mountaintop cabin in the woods with great views. Easy access. One hour from Harrisonburg, VA and 10 minutes from Franklin, WV.
Unplug and come enjoy the peace, beauty, and recreational opportunities Pendleton County, West Virginia's mountain playground, has to offer. Our cozy cabin blends into the mountain setting and was built between 2010 and 2014, using as many local and reclaimed materials as possible. It has one bedroom plus a loft. There is a ladder to the loft space which has a single bed and a small sitting area. (We do provide a way to block access to the ladder if you want to keep little ones from going up.) Sleeping space is also available in the living room (window seat ). The bathroom has a clawfoot tub/shower. Kitchen is fully set up for cooking with full size stove, refrigerator, a pantry, and plenty of storage space. We do not have wifi or cable. (Wifi is available at Subway in Franklin.) We do have plenty of books and games and a collection of videos. There is a window air conditioner in the main living area and in the bedroom. Cell service is spotty. AT&T users can almost always get a signal up on the ridge behind the cabin, and also can get service in Franklin, and often in the cabin. Verizon users will not get reception in Franklin area or in the cabin. This space is about 550 sq. ft. excluding the loft. There is a wood stove in the cabin and firewood is provided for use during the cooler months of the year. We also have convenient electric baseboard heat. Please show correct number of guests. If you are interested in staying for a week please contact me. It is quite possible we can work that out even though it appears the cabin is unavailable during the week.
This is a beautiful area with well-kept farms, beautiful forests, and mountain streams and springs. Franklin is a charming small town and it is like stepping back in time. There is a grocery store, a couple of small restaurants, and two hardware stores. The Drive-In theater is open on weekends during the warmer months. Franklin has a community pool that has very reasonable rates. Hiking, biking, fishing opportunities abound locally. Dolly Sods, Spruce Knob, Seneca Rocks are about an hour away. Monterey, Virginia is 30 minutes away and is a scenic little town. Harrisonburg, VA is an hour away. Franklin, Monterey, and Harrisonburg have nice farmers markets. Pendleton County, WV has a website that may provide more information about local attractions.
  • This was the perfect place to disconnect from the world and focus on relaxing! My husband and I loved staying at the cabin and sort of live off the grid for a weekend. The cabin was super cozy, and the wood stove worked amazing to keep it warm! We’d definitely like to stay here again!

    Rebecca2020-03-16T00:00:00Z
  • This was my favorite Airbnb stay to date. It was an amazing peaceful getaway in a beautiful space. Many thanks to Donna!

  • The Bear Cub Cabin is a peaceful and relaxing getaway for those looking to unplug from the daily grind. Perfect for shutting in on a long weekend, but within a twenty minute drive to scenic Franklin, WV. Donna and Don have thought of the essentials for a wonderful stay. From just waking up to a beautiful sunrise, an early morning walk to the top of Sharpe Ridge and a lovely scenic drive to Spruce Knob, we saw it all. Thank you for sharing your cabin. We loved it! Casey & Michael

    Rose2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • The cabin was a wonderful place for a weekend getaway and would be great for an even longer stay too! Beautifully furnished and immaculately clean. The reading nook and wood burning stove were our favorite parts!! No cell service but that’s the whole point of a cabin in the woods! Will definitely stay there again!!

    Allison2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • Picture perfect place! The photos are exactly what you get and it's just perfect. I would suggest you plan to have meals at the cabin, there just is not many options, especially for dinner. All in all it a great getaway, we loved every minute of the trip and our stay.

My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, business travelers, families (with kids), and furry friends (pets). It is located just above the entrance to the Smoke Hole Canyon with great fishing, beautiful scenery along the paved country curvy road. You can drive through the canyon and come out on Rt 28 just below the Smoke Hole caverns and gift shop. Then continue to Seneca Rocks and hike the rocks or drive to Nelson Rocks and do some rock climbing or zip-lining. Spruce Knob has hiking
Our cabin sits along RT 220 also known now as Petersburg Pike 2/10th a mile from the entrance to the Smoke Hole canyon where you amy hike, fish and travel through the canyon and enjoy the beauty of the South Branch River, Eagle Rock, May fish in the catch and release area for fun only. If you want to keep your fish be sure not to fish in the designated area. The Reeds Creek Rd is another road just 1/2 mile that is a great road to walk with dog or just hike yourself, this road 5 mile in is where the Reeds Creek fish hatchery is located, nice to visit while in the area. At the cabin we do have a fire pit weather permitting to enjoy while talking and star gazing with friend and family.
Our area here in Upper Tract is very quite and there are houses you may see but yet far away that they will never hear you talking or actually see you. Just 3 minutes from the cabin is the new business called Swilled Dog which offers flavored hard ciders and also some weekends has entertainment. Sure want to stop by being it is so close to the cabin.
  • Such a beautiful location, adorable cabin that was extremely clean and well kept. It felt like I was walking into a home and not just an air bnb. Highly recommend

  • Such a great location, beautiful cabin and rhona and hap were very accommodating. We will definitely be back!

    Tyler2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • These are two of the best hosts I've had. They were very communicative and were incredibly sweet. The cabin itself is perfect for a quaint, little getaway in the mountains. We spent the entirety of the next day fishing and my puppy loved to play in the water as well; not to mention it was only a 10 minute drive from the cabin. My friends and I got to catch up and enjoy a mini vacation from our everyday lives. We enjoyed every second. Thanks so much!

  • Rhona and Carroll’s cabin is a great place to stay! My husband and I spent a lovely night there. We want to make a return trip when the weather is warmer so we can enjoy the porch and the fire pit. I highly recommend staying here!

  • I can’t say enough wonderful things about the cabin and it’s wonderful owners! The cabin itself had everything we could have wanted and was beyond cozy. It was our first trip to WV and waking up to the view was something we loved. The amenities were very thoughtful and the helpful tips from Rhona and Carroll were invaluable while navigating the nearby hotspots. Staying in their cabin was definitely one of the highlights of our vacation and we would definitely love to go stay again!

    Jennifer2019-12-31T00:00:00Z
  • This was our third stay at the cabin, and we love it more every time. It has all the amenities you could think of, and feels like our second home. We can't wait to return soon.

    Chris2019-12-26T00:00:00Z
  • One of our best Airbnb experiences so far. We were looking for a place on short notice and they were very quick to respond and accommodating. The place was super warm and cozy and all decorated for Christmas. Great views from the deck and nearby walks for the pup. We enjoyed time at Seneca rocks, spruce knob, and north fork mountain. Loved our stay!

  • We had such a wonderful weekend at Marcia’s cabin. The location was perfect and we loved exploring blue hole and the nearby trails. The cabin was very clean and comfortable and I loved hearing the river right outside. We’ll be back!

  • Amazing location, quiet and close to many outdoor attractions. SPRUCE KNOB is a must see!

  • Great host and a wonderful cabin full of amenities. Can’t wait to return!

    Josh2020-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • This place was so relaxing! It literally has everything you need! A perfect spot right next to the river, with a wonderful trail to a private attraction, “Blue Hole.” It was clean and a simple trip into town 20min) for some more site seeing was great!

    Kim2020-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • Spent a few lovely days at Marcia‘s cabin! Communication with Marcia has been very easy and checking in a breeze. The cabin is just as described. It is set in a somewhat secluded area, very peaceful. It was great being able to walk out directly from the cabin for a short hike to the blue hole on the first evening. We enjoyed some great hikes in the area over the next days and it was nice to come home to a warm and comfy cabin in the evening. The cabin has all amenities one can wish for and everything has been very well thought through. The upstairs area with the desk overlooking nature outside and the cute little nook for kids are great features. Enjoyed the gas fireplace downstairs in the evenings. We had plenty of hot water for our showers and great coffee with the Keurig in the mornings. Had twice diner in town at Jimmy’s Madison where we enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. A wonderful stay we will remember. Highly recommended!

    Veronique2020-02-18T00:00:00Z
  • Was very nice for a quiet weekend away on Valentine’s Day. It is very desolate (as described) and almost impossible to get uber/taxi etc out there just to note. Harrisonburg is very close. Host left great suggestions for food and things to do. Thanks Marcia!

    Elizabeth2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful place! In the woods away from a lot of people but close enough to town to make a relatively quick run to the store if needed. Definitely a big bang for your buck! This place did not disappoint and we will definitely be back again soon!

    Elizabeth2020-02-11T00:00:00Z
  • The place was easy to get to, felt secluded while still being close to everything you would need, cozy and clean. Communication with the host, Marcia, was easy and fast. Everything went smoothly. This place is great for a weekend away from the city to stargaze and listen to the river.

The Seneca Suite is a bedroom with a set of bunk beds and a queen size bed, private bathroom & shower. This is a BYOB accommodation, Bring Your Own Bag (sleeping bag or blanket, pillows and towels). Your bathroom and shower are just across the hall from the bedroom. The room is basic and clean and about as close as you are going to get to the base of Seneca Rocks. WI-FI, additional outdoor shower with a view of the rock! 2 Country stores across the street inc. a pizza place and a diner.
We are a 32 plus year old guide service and climbing school. If you stay with us you will meet and probably have a beverage with the local guides and climbers.
Seneca Rocks is unique village in the middle of no where! There are two general stores and a climbing shop across the street from our place. Harpers Old Country Store is over 100 years old and about as authentic as you will find anywhere. The Yokums is a bit more modern but has local flavor all its own. Theres a Pizza place above Harpers Store and a Diner in the back of Yokums.
  • Great place! Easy access to climbing. Would book again! :)

Stream-side guest house with fantastic water view in lovely forest setting and steps away from trailhead to GW National Forest. Peaceful and private, this large 720 sq ft loft studio is a charming, comfy and secluded getaway. During the day go hiking or just relax on the deck overlooking the stream. At night open the windows and let soothing nature sounds lull you to sleep. Just 11 miles from Harrisonburg. Internet, Netflix. A meditative retreat and home base from which to explore the area.
CORONA VIRUS NOTE: Our loft is in a secluded natural location where one can, if desired, have little to no human contact. Our location greatly reduces the potential risk of community contagion of the Corona virus and enables one to easily practice social distancing. In an extra effort to provide the maximum protection to our guests, we ask that you bring your own set of queen-size bedsheets, blanket and your own towels. Not having to do laundry will give our housekeeper extra time to wipe down and sterilize all surfaces and to exercise every precaution to prevent exposure to the Corona virus. We appreciate your understanding of our efforts to protect you and our guests by providing a sanitized, sterile and safe living space. This secluded, second story loft/guesthouse (garage below) is accessed by a flight of stairs leading to a small deck overlooking the forest and beautiful stream. In the warm weather you can open the windows and hear the water rushing over the boulders. At the base of the stairs is another deck with a gas grill and a stair down to the lower property and the stream. The location is quite secluded and there is no traffic noise from rt. 33 which is almost a mile away. The loft is equipped with 2 burner hotplate, countertop oven, sink, microwave, fridge, coffee maker, and necessaries for making and serving basic meals. Breakfast staples (eggs, bread, cereal, coffee, fruit, etc) included. High speed internet connected. Network channels, Netflix and Amazon on smart TV. Bathroom with stall shower. Smoke-free both inside the loft and on the grounds. Sorry, no pets of any kind. The space is set up to sleep two: See our other listing "Stream-side suite with private entrance/deck/bath" if traveling with friends and needing additional space). Check-in time is 2:00pm and Check-out time is 12:00 noon. IMPORTANT NOTE: Be sure to print driving and parking directions as some navigation systems have the last bit of our road mapped incorrectly! In the 1800's there was a destination resort hotel in Rawley Springs that was renowned for the "healing waters" emerging from the many springs in the area. At the foot of the Allegheny range, and located on the very border of hundreds of thousands of acres of GW National Forest, the loft feels a world away from the hustle and bustle. The grounds are planted with azaleas, rhododendrons and day lilies that are spectacular in the spring. Summer is five to ten degrees cooler than Harrisonburg due to the higher elevation, the tree canopy and stream. Great for hiking. Fall foliage is magnificent and is a week ahead of lower elevations in the Shenandoah Valley. Winter is a magical time when the trees are snow covered and the air crisp and clear. Just past the property is the trailhead for the National forest, so the loft is surrounded by forest and park land. From the trailhead one could walk for 20 miles into West Virginia and not see another structure (you may have to get your feet wet crossing if the stream is up - bring your hiking boots).
ENJOYING RAWLEY SPRINGS The property: Feel free to wander around the property or hang out in the garden and have a picnic on the grass. In the spring everything is blooming and green, and in the fall all the ground plants are turning brown as the leaves come into full color. The Stream: The stream flows directly out of George Washington National forest. To access the stream there is a stairway leading from the deck just behind the loft to the water. The stream might be a trickling brook if it’s been dry, or a raging river if there has been a big storm. Most often it is somewhere in between, but be careful – the rocks are always slippery. It’s fun to hang out on the big flat rocks in the middle of the stream directly across from the deck of the loft and have a picnic. If the steam is high enough you may wish to wade or lounge in the pools by the large rocks across from the loft. If you are a fly-fisher, the stream is home to native brook trout. The path that runs along the stream climbs back up the bank and forms an elliptical walking circuit back along the flat section – great for a walking meditation circuit. There are chairs and a bench scattered about for those who just wish to relax in the healing embrace of nature. Hiking in GW National Forest: If you face the gravel road and go right, you will quickly come to the end of the road and the beginning of GW National forest. Go straight past the end of the cul-de-sac and you are at the trail head. There is a beautiful little wading pool just steps down from the road, and miles and miles of trails begin just across from the stream. If the stream is up, you might have to get your feet wet if the stepping stones across are covered with water. There are three stream crossings on this trail within the first quarter mile or so, after which it follows the right bank for miles as you gain elevation. (At the second stream crossing you can follow the right bank over the bluff to avoid the second and third stream crossings). Just over the first stream crossing and to the left is a beautiful little picnic spot on the rocks across from a steep rock wall. A really great hang-out spot. (If the stream is too high, or you don’t want to get your feet wet, see the description for “Juliette’s Tower” to access the more difficult but equally beautiful trail that is on the opposite bank of the stream, and which requires some climbing, but no stream crossings). The trail into the forest is occasionally marked on the trees by two yellow squares or diamonds, and pretty much follows the stream. You can’t get lost if you remember that the stream flows towards home – it will bring you back to the cul-de-sac. The trail presents some really lovely and intimate views. After the third stream crossing the trail is a bit rocky for a hundred yards or so, then evens out. After this rocky bit, the path diverges from the stream for a stretch - look for a small cairn of stones and one oblong stone on the left side of the trail pointing toward the stream. The oblong stone points to a large, flat boulder just above a lovely pool into which rush a few small rapids. Gorgeous, secluded and peaceful. Sit on the boulder over the pool and become a fully realized being. Further on the trail is a beautiful long view of the stream, and also a section with a beautiful tall rock face on the other side. It’s easy to lose your sense of time as you delight in all this beauty: Remember to be back before dark! Of course, animals live in this huge forest, including black bears, and it’s conceivable, though very rare, that you might see one– as well as other forest creatures. They want to avoid you and it’s very unlikely that you will end up in the belly of a wild animal - we have never heard of anyone being attacked by a bear around here. More Hiking - Juliet’s Tower and the Left Bank: Also at the end of the cul-de-sac, to your left, will be a path that goes up the side of the very steep hill (use the tree roots as steps). Climb past the first large granite boulders and outcroppings, and about 200’ above the road you can hunt around to find the path that runs to your right. This path leads to a long, tall, granite wall (not just a bunch of boulders) and on to “Juliet’s Tower” (see photo). The wall is, perhaps, 100 feet long and 20 feet high and the path runs along its base, so if you don’t know if you’ve found it, you haven’t. There are great hang-out/picnic spots up here. You have to be a good rock climber to get up on the tower itself, which is a granite outcropping/spire about 20’ high, but the path along the rock wall is pretty cool too with a nice view. Well worth the effort. The Left Bank: If you are following this path because the stream is too high to cross and want to hike in the mountains along the left bank of the stream, continue on the narrow footpath past Juliette’s tower and down the side of the hill. This path is seldom traveled and a bit overgrown, but manageable. At the base of the hill you will cross over a little tributary brook (about 4 feet wide) and continue on the path as it opens up and becomes wider. In a few hundred yards you will come to a campfire pit and the path leads to a stream crossing. However, look to the left from the firepit and you will see a path that follows the left bank of the stream. Follow the left bank trail, picking your way through a pathless area of boulders (across from which is the meditation rock and pool mentioned in the “yellow rectangles” trail on the other side of the stream) until you come to a new stream/tributary that comes in from the left (and is about 20’ across). Follow the left bank of that stream until you come to another firepit, across from which is a really magical spot with small waterfalls and rapids with a little island in the middle. This is the best spot on this stream. A perfect place to have lunch and lounge by, or in, in the water. Further along this trail dead-ends on the left side and requires a stream crossing to continue on the right bank, where it gets rougher. Lower Rawley: If you prefer strolling to hiking take a walk through the pleasant village of Lower Rawley, population 20, more or less. If you face the gravel road and turn left you will walk out the way you drove in. It’s a nice walk into the little neighborhood of “Lower Rawley” (see drawing). (By the way - You will pass a bridge over the stream with a sign for “Highlands of Rawley Springs” that is just down from the loft. You can go to the middle of the bridge to get a view, but please don’t go all the way over the bridge and up into that neighborhood - a troll lives under that bridge and there are “residents and guests” only postings. Even though you are our guests, you don’t want to explain and it’s not worth the hassle anyway to walk up that big hill). Further on down the road, there is a hard-to-see path that is on the left side of the road, just past and above the first big newer house on the left, that leads down into Lower Rawley. Go down that path into Lower Rawley. If you miss it, no worries, just keep going on the road past the mailboxes and little stone spring house and down the hill. Take a hairpin left on Gum Run Trail which brings you into Lower Rawley from the other end. In the 1920’s locals began building cabins in Lower Rawley and you are our guest and therefore free to walk around the troll-free neighborhood and enjoy this pretty area. Gum Run Trail dead-ends at the aforementioned newer house, and the path you missed is now on your left and runs along the fenced-in yard with the chicken coop and big black dog that barks a lot but is harmless. There may be goats in that yard as well. You can pet them. Follow the path up to the paved road and turn right to get back to the loft. In the 1800’s Rawley Springs was a retreat renowned for its “healing waters” (see photos). Fires twice destroyed the main hotels that were built – as you walk around you can still see the stone foundations of the hotels above the mailboxes next the small stone springhouse. Blue Hole: Blue Hole is a well-known swimming hole on the confusingly named Dry River. You passed over the Dry River just after you turned onto Rawley Springs Road from Rt. 33. There is a path that runs along the near side of the river, and which goes to your left as you face the river, leading to Blue Hole. If you go down Gum Run Trail from Rawley Springs Rd and turn right over the little bridge that crosses the stream, then turn right again along the dirt road you will see some cabins (and a Swiss Chalet style house) on your right, and a little father along a small stone and wood cottage. Go between the cabins and stone cottage to find that path (turn left on the path) that closely boarders the river to get to Blue Hole. It is a nice walk even if you don’t intend to swim. You will know you are there when you see some signs of “Do not do xyz” posted by the county, and look across the water and see a giant boulder overhanging Blue Hole, from which we encourage you not to jump. The Upper Westward Path. Further up the hill from Juliet’s Tower, there is a trail that leads West into the forest that may be of interest to the serious woodsman. You can continue straight up the steep slope through the woods (no path and a difficult and brush impeded climb) and in about 100 yards you will strike a trail that runs perpendicularly to the hillside. Turn right and you can hike West for miles. You should mark your entry point to the path with something so that when you return you know when to go back down the hill to the Cul-de-Sac. People get lost up here. However, if you turn left when you strike the path it will take you back to gravel roads in Upper Rawley (Cliffside Trail), so if you miss your mark on the return hike, you can always come back around the long way just by continuing on the path. We don’t recommend this trail except to those who are equipped with a topo map and maybe a gps. It’s not particularly scenic when compared to the stream-side trails, as it is uninterrupted forest.
  • Truly a beautiful property and comfortable one-room accommodation.

  • We had a great time in this inviting, private home. The hosts were accommodating and kind. Breakfast foods were provided, there was a nice compact area for cooking, and the whole place was spacious and clean. Just steps from hiking and a beautiful creek! Very nice for a tranquil getaway :) highly, highly recommend. Thank you Omi!

  • Tucked away in the woods with a stream in sight and in hearing distance. Amazing little getaway. Hope to go back.

  • Great host and location would definitely stay again.

    Christopher2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay here was beyond what we expected In regards to the area, accommodations, and especially the fact that our space made us feel like we were in a tree house. ☺️ for someone who lives in the city full time now but had once lived in the country out west, it’s very refreshing to find places such as this. It was a beautiful experience for several reasons traveling the paths within the property and park. The stay was stylish, modern, relevant and uplifting. Thank you!

  • Phenomenal location....great hosts!

  • We had another wonderful retreat at Stream-Side. Heading back in July! Highly recommend you spend some time there.

    Dwight2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • The view from this home is absolutely spectacular. You can crack the window and hear the rushing of the stream as you go to sleep. I sat down by the stream for about an hour just to relax I can only imagine how beautiful this place would be in the summertime also. The loft was clean, open, and had a ton of little touches. The Host even had eggs in the refrigerator for breakfast and oatmeal for free. It was an amazing stay I would highly recommend to anybody!

Cozy and inviting atmosphere with warm lighting and landscape art in the living and kitchen area. Bright and cheery in the bedrooms. Wonderful sound of the river throughout the property. Step outside to hundreds of miles of biking and hiking trails, and stocked lakes and streams. Borders national forest and a close drive to Reddish Knob.
The relaxing sound of the falling stream can be heard from anywhere on the property.
Peace and quite with a constant sound of the stream makes this place special. Plenty of biking, hiking and fishing outside the door.
  • Sweet little cabin right next to the river with great hikes nearby. Our kids loved the games in the cabin, too (Lincoln Logs and Don’t Break The Ice). A great host that left wine, flowers, and candy for us. We would certainly recommend this place and hope to visit again ourselves.

    Jed2020-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay was terrific. The house was spotless, well stocked, and very comfortable. We especially liked the beautiful roses on the counter and the bowl of chocolates. Right next to the stream as promised. Hidden Cliffs trail and Hone Quarry trails are less than two miles away. It is a perfect place for hiling, photography, or just lounging and reading a book for days. Our dog also gives her endorsement. We will stay at Serenity by the Stream again.

    Jill2020-03-04T00:00:00Z
  • This home is gorgeous! As soon as we opened the car door we were greeted by the sound of the rushing creek. The place was spotless, and well appointed. If you’re looking for a luxury cabin that’s minutes away from outdoor exploring as well as a vibrant downtown, this is the one!

    Matthew2020-02-28T00:00:00Z
  • Suzanne was a wonderful host. Other airbnbs should model themselves after her home. The river behind was peaceful and just what me and my wife were looking for on our weekend getaway.

    Robert2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay was great. Suzanne was quick to communicate and was a step ahead with Checkin- made super easy. Lots of little touches made it extra nice. The house is beautiful and the river is amazing. We’ll be back!

    Stephanie2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • Suzanne's place proved to be the perfect respite from city and work life. The cabin is warm, comfortable and spotlessly clean. Suzanne was a great hostess providing thoughtful touches like snacks, fresh fruit and treats for pets. In addition, she was quick to reply to any questions we had about the cabin and area attractions. Looking forward to returning sometime in the future!

    Lata2020-02-05T00:00:00Z
  • Suzanne’s place is amazing. The babbling stream next to her house is idyllic and the perfect place for morning coffee. It’s close enough to a downtown spot with amenities that you don’t feel too isolated yet far enough out of town that it feels secluded and disconnected so you get the R&R you need! The place was spotless when we arrived but filled with snacks, amenities, and lots of local information for hiking and other activities. We loved our stay here and can’t wait to return.

    Samantha2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • The best bnb we have stayed at, hands down. Suzanne was very thoughtful with every touch, whatever you could think of, she had it available for you to use from doggy essentials to meals to bathroom necessities. We felt right at home. Would definitely come back!

A one-of-a-kind getaway in the mtns - beautiful addition to an 1840s barn has comfy beds, lots of amenities - travel light. Cabin has NO BATHROOM (shared bathrm/shower nearby), NO internet/tv. Pictures do not do justice to the lovely property. We are 1 hr from Harrisonburg VA, 3 1/2 hrs from DC or Richmond, near hiking (also trails here), biking, caves, great motorcycling, nRocks, area fests. If booked, see other listings. List correct # of guests at booking. Ask to bring a dog (extra $50 fee).
3/10/2020 - YOUR HEALTH AND THAT OF OUR OTHER GUESTS AND NEIGHBORS IS OUR PRIMARY CONCERN AT THIS STRESSFUL TIME. IF YOU HAVE TRAVELED WITHIN THE PAST 2 WEEKS ON A PLANE FLIGHT, OR USED A "METRO" TRANSIT SYSTEM IN A MAJOR CITY, PLEASE DO NOT BOOK UNTIL LATER IN THE YEAR. WE ARE IN A SMALL COMMUNITY HERE IN WV, AND 1 CASE OF CORONAVIRUS WILL INFECT THE WHOLE TOWN AND SURROUNDING AREA (1 GROCERY STORE, 2 BANKS, 1 CLINIC, 1 LIBRARY, COMBINED GRADES IN SCHOOLS). THANK YOU! This private cabin has its own deck, fire pit, picnic table under the covered entertaining space (it's huge but may be shared if there are guests in the neighboring camping cabin). The views are beautiful! The cabin was built in 2017 in an expansion of an existing 1840s log cabin and you will never find another space like it! It is not like a traditional inn or hotel room. It is more like really fancy glamping! It has electricity - baseboard heat, lights, ceiling fan, free spring water for drinking or cleaning up, and free firewood for your fire pit. Coffee is available in your kitchenette. NOTE please don't entice the critters. They are crafty and relentless in trying to get your food. Don't leave it out - place it in the fridge, your cooler or the bin provided in the kitchenette. You'll see loads of deer, maybe red tail hawks, owls, or a bald eagle, fox or bear. The cabin is in a hayfield with mountain views. If you don't like wildlife, small critters, insects - don't stay here. Some years ticks are bad, and the ladybugs get in some years in the Spring or Fall. The cabin has screen doors and on the windows, and we thoroughly clean before each stay, but you may want to use our vacuum to get rid of pests if they are bad. TIP: If you haven't booked through airbnb yet, but would like to try it - you can get a $55 credit off your first trip if you join here https://www.airbnb.com/c/teresam3667?currency=USD .
This is a great getaway, or a jumping off point for spelunkers, hikers, bicyclists, motorcyclists (we are on a scenic driving and biking loop). If you like being outdoors, this place is for you! Franklin is 10 mins away and has restaurants, banks, gas, library, shops, etc. We also own the historic Ananias Pitsenbarger Farm, a National Historic Register district. The house and outbuildings are just down the hill from the main log cabin and you are welcome to explore the 1800s farmstead and get a glimpse into life "the way it was" at a self-sufficient Appalachian farm. Ask Jeff for a tour! We are near nRocks Outdoors, Seneca Rocks, Reddish Knob, hiking, climbing, caving, trout fishing locations.
  • We had an amazing weekend at Teresa and Jeff’s cabin. We were greeted by the hosts and their cute dog upon arrival. The room was clean, had all we needed and comfortable and warm for our stay. There is no internet (or phone signal) and we saw it as a plus which enabled us to spend more time together and enjoy the beautiful nature around us.

  • My newly wed husband and fur baby, Sasha, absolutely enjoyed our getaway weekend at Loafer's Glory. It was a chilly weekend but Teresa and Jeff helped us make the most of it with their hospitality and kindness. We loved exploring the property, disconnecting from our phones, watching the deer run along the mountain side, and sitting below the countless stars near the warm fire. On our first night, Sasha chased after a family of deer and Jeff, Teresa, and their dog Xena helped us find her without a second's hesitation. We will hold onto so many memories we made here and can't wait to come back in the spring and fall! Definitely would recommend this place to everyone!

    Alexis2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • Loafer’s Glory is a beautiful and cozy place, the perfect spot for disconnecting and taking a breath. Teresa is lovely, communicative and incredibly helpful, making our visit feel smooth and relaxing. Thank you for the wonderful long weekend!

  • Loafer's Glory is a lovely spot in a stunning WV location. The farm is gorgeous and so beautifully cared for. Our dogs loved running around freely and the accommodation is sparkling clean, charming and modern! This is our second visit and we look forward coming back. The hosts are friendly, kind and helpful.

    Lisa2019-10-12T00:00:00Z
  • Loafers Glory was one of the best AirBnBs I’ve ever stayed at. If you want to escape it all and be in peace, this is the place for you. Everything from communication, directions, hospitality, and the amenities were outstanding. I can’t wait to return and I will always recommend Loafers Glory to family and friends who want to get away to a beautiful place! Thank you Teresa and Jeff for everything!

    Atania2019-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • What an amazing getaway! Teresa was an amazing host and I cannot recommend this place enough. It is the perfect escape in a beautiful WV backdrop. The cabin has everything you need to enjoy your stay. We used the fire pit to cook some delicious meals and enjoyed our time being disconnected. There are a few hikes on the property and we found few reasons to leave while we were at loafers glory. Highly highly recommend this stay.

This country apartment is quite like a motel room, only it is tucked in the corner of a hilltop dwelling with mountain views. Forget the commercial motel room beside the loud highway and come to this Quiet Country Corner where abundant hiking at places like Seneca Rocks (4 miles away) and Spruce Knob and Blackwater Falls is all around. Come and be awestruck by the gorgeous mountain views and the peacefulness of nature. Come to relax and rejuvenate your soul without draining the bank account.
You will love our space if you are looking for a pleasant place to stay that will not break the bank, yet this apartment has everything you need for a great corner to relax at while you are in the area. We remodeled a room in our lower level that was being used very little into something quite like a motel room, only with a much more country/quality touch. In addition, it will feel really private. . . one other guest cabin positioned several hundred feet away and we will be the only people around, as opposed to a motel full of people! We also think you will find it hard to locate lodging with a view like ours! The view of the mountains here is worth relaxing in front of and taking in for a while.:) Relax in the comfy queen-size bed or sit in the glider chairs by the window and read a book. You will have access to a private full bathroom with fresh linens, body wash, and shampoo provided. In addition, you will be able to use our WiFi, so if you need to do business while you are here, no problem! For your food preparation, there is a small refrigerator and a microwave in the room. Of course, what stay is complete without coffee? We have provided free coffee, creamer, and sugar as well as a four-cup coffee pot- the final touch to your home-away-from-home.
Our home is surrounded by pasture and woods. You may see some cattle grazing or a farmer making hay close by. You might even see wildlife of multiple kinds if you are quiet. We also try to keep a walking path mowed around our pasture for our enjoyment as well as yours. Our property is situated on a back road that is narrow; so watch out for other travelers, people, animals, etc.
  • Such a lovely home and an even better view! They were very helpful hosts who checked in with me to make sure I was comfortable, but also gave me space and were not loud or intrusive at all. The room was beautifully decorated and had plenty of linens available, along with perfectly working wifi (surprising for the area!). They are located less than 10 minutes from Seneca Rocks where I had fun hiking and climbing. I enjoyed walking around the outside of their property and meeting one of their cats as well. If you're looking for a relaxing getaway to the mountains, I highly recommend this beautiful retreat! I will definitely be coming back soon.

    Angela2020-03-21T00:00:00Z
  • The views from the stay are beautiful. Bathroom is spacious. Everything very clean and organized. Good sized mini fridge and microwave for your use. Bring your own food, as not many food options in the area. It was a great place to stay after a day of hiking! Hosts are very kind. Would definitely stay here again. Thank you!

  • Their home is a great location that isn’t hard to find. The views are beautiful and it’s a very short drive to the town/hiking area of Seneca rocks. Kent and Cynthia were great hosts and came out to greet us when we arrived, even with the checkin process just being a code from a private entrance, and came out to say goodbye when we left. They gave us some tips for what to do in the area and were hospitable and available if needed! The bed is super comfy and we went in the winter and were very comfortable thanks to an electric fireplace that we could control. It’s a great place to stay!

  • The Cabin at Spruce Knob was warm and comfortable. The morning sunrise, through the tall front window, was a wash of red, orange, yellow, and pink. The cabin was clean and inviting. The little restaurant down the hill had good food and friendly service. Great place to get away!

  • Favorite place to stay in the MON. Always great communication, and information from hosts.

  • Clean and comfortable cabin in a beautiful and remote location. What more can one ask for.

  • The best place if you wish to have great mountain view out of your windows with beautiful sunrises and be near Spruce Knob. Very new and clean

  • If you are looking for a peaceful cabin in the mountains with all the amenities of home, this place is for you. It's super clean and comfortable. It has great views and is located close to lots of trails and things to do, but it is very secluded. We loved disconnecting and taking in the mountain atmosphere.

    Sarah2019-11-30T00:00:00Z
  • A great to stay!

    Linda2019-11-27T00:00:00Z
  • Adorable and cozy cabin located close to awesome hiking areas including Spruce Knob, Seneca Rocks and Dolly Sods. The Gateway Cafe was very close and had delicious and affordable food. Kent, Cynthia, and Marissa were quick to reply, and very informative/ friendly. We would stay again for sure!

    Taylor2019-11-17T00:00:00Z
  • This place is the real deal. An actual mountain cabin on a mountain, the highest in WVA. So close to great overlooks & hikes on Spruce Knob as well as other trails not too far away. The place is right in the middle of pristine natural beauty. Views abound. The cabin is modern and rustic at the same time. The living space is very comfortable, a great place to hang out, play games, read, cook and enjoy Mother Nature. The beds are super comfortable and there are ample blankets in case it gets cold (which it did when we were there!). The water pressure in the showers is also great. Check in was easy. Communication with the hosts was timely and ample. The WiFi is also great if you're looking to stream shows or watch movies. What a gem this place is!

  • If you are thinking about booking this place, DO IT! Ashley is an outstanding host. This tiny home had absolutely everything you could need and more! There were so many thoughtful touches like basic breakfast items in the fridge and a basket with s’mores supplies. Not to mention, the queen bed was SO comfortable—It was like sleeping on clouds. We also loved being able to bring our pups, they had a great time running around on the large property. Overall, Ashley went above and beyond to make our stay exceptional. Thank you so much! We would love to return in the future!!! :)

  • If you love nature, camping and disconnecting, this is for you. It’s been hard camping since we had our little one and this winter escape gave us an easy way to glamp and reconnect with nature. The outhouse is the cleanest outhouse I’ve used- and is really not that bad! Warm, cozy, great hosts. They clearly have this place so they can share their love of nature and life’s simple gifts. The creek is right outside your door and absolutely gorgeous!!!

Ahhhh.........quiet, get away from the hussle and bussle of life. The sound of a mountain creek taking your stress away. Getting back to nature, the gentle sway of a breeze, a starry night, rain pitter patter on a tin roof or the sun shining bright and warm. A lovely get away, barely minutes from George Washington National Forest, and yet only 20 minutes to Harrisonburg and JMU.
The best of both worlds. A quiet little cottage in the country, next to a lovely little mountain river. Yet, modern luxuries are not lost. This little home offers truly high speed internet, a hot shower, a full kitchen with a dishwasher, and garbage disposal. It has a washer and dryer combo and a porch almost as big as the cottage it's self. Nestled right next to the mountains with hiking and biking trails and yet only 20 to 25 minutes to Harrisonburg and James Madison University. Harrisonburg offers a variety of restaurants and entertainment.
  • Helpful host, well-stocked with breakfast items, cute cottage!

  • Quite cottage not too far from the bigger city of Harrisonburg for good food, or the George Washington State Park for an outside adventure. The host provided tips, and eager dogs looking for a scratch. This is a relaxing stay.

  • Jennifer was an awesome host and the place was so cozy with added amenities. It was perfect for our stay and so cute. The dogs were awesome too and were so sweet! Loved it!

My place is close to great views and family-friendly activities. My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, business travelers, families (with kids), big groups, and furry friends (pets) with a 25.00 per pet charge for entire stay.
The hideaway is secluded and nestled in the woods just above the entrance to the Smoke Hole Canyon, where the South Branch of the Potomac flows. This river is stocked in months of Jan, Feb, March, April and May and in fall month of October, but there is fish in this stream all year. Within less than an hour you can be climbing Seneca Rocks or exploring Seneca Caverns, Zip- lining at nelson Rocks, sight-seeing at Black water Falls or ski at Canaan Valley or Snowshoe Resort. Smoke Hole caverns and shop is just 30 minutes from here also. We have 2 golf courses close by Fisher Mtn. just 15 minutes and Valley View 30 minutes. There is a local park named Ruddle Park with walking paths and children's play items for them to enjoy if you want to walk or run around the park a few laps. The river is right beside the [park also. If you would want to bring your own kayaks you can, I'm sure you will have an enjoyable ride down the river.
We are 12 mile to the closest restaurants. Korner Shop,The Star, Foxes Pizza, Subway are all nice restaurants in Franklin.MoeFatz is located 3 mile south of Franklin on the right. Going north it is 17 mile to Petersburg, where you will find Sue's country kitchen, Poor Daves Restaurant, Family Traditions both, McDonalds, Pizza Hut

  • The Hideaway is a real gem hidden within the beautiful mountains of West Virginia. It is an oasis from civilization that offers a sense of Serenity, privacy, and a return to nature. Come here if you need to decompress from reality. We have stayed here before and this was a repeat visit, and certainly won't be our last. It was special to spend Thanksgiving in such a lovely setting. The house is super spacious and the hot tub is soothing and has a spectacular view of both the sunrise and sunset. Plenty of birds and wildlife visit the area to enjoy. Rhona and Carroll our wonderful hosts and go out of their way to make you feel right at home. They are also super accomadating as well. The surrounding area hosts Eagle Rock, which is a stunning view of the mountainside where you can view Eagles soaring above, and visit the resting place of William Eagle, a soldier in the Revolutionary War. Nice walk up Reed's Creek Road as well, which enters into the National Forest. Great stay at The Hideaway!

Experience the country life in our comfortable farmhouse on the South Branch of the Potomac River in Pendleton Co., WV. It has river front access for fishing, quiet, peaceful nature trails, abundant wildlife and is situated on a working cattle farm. Farmhouse includes 3 bedrooms on the second floor, 2 queen size mattresses and 1 full size. A queen size pull-out sofa bed is located in the den room. Full, newly remodeled bathroom with heated floors is located on the main floor. Gas stoves in kitchen and living room. Television and wifi router is in the living room. Brand new washer and dryer situated in room off of the kitchen. Other amenities include microwave, toaster, and coffee maker. Cookware, silverware and place settings are also provided. The back porch contains view of mountains and spacious back yard. A grill and firepit are also provided. This property is a great, quiet place nestled in the mountains. It is perfect for a weekend getaway or a place to have an extensive stay while visiting family.
No nearby neighbors, maybe an occasional deer.
  • We have stayed at Black Horse Farm repeatedly over the last several years--usually for the Highland County Maple Festival. It is ideally located for visiting the area and Darell and Cindy are two of the most gracious hosts one could hope for. They are very accomodating with allowing us to get into the home whatever time we arrive and the home is always immaculate and well-stocked with all necessary items (or at least all things we needed--pots, pans, dish soap, towels, other kitchen items, firewood for the outdoor fire ring, etc.). Also, there are generally nice touches left to greet us, such as homemade bread, local syrup, or fruit. The location is very relaxing. The farmhouse is a true farmhouse, sitting by itself in a fenced yard but surrounded by active fields--filled with corn and, often cows. There are few things more enjoyable, at least to us, than sitting on the wrap-around porch reading or just enjoying the view of the hills surrounding the valley. We know we'll return often.

    William2020-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • This is a quiet, rustic farmhouse that really feels like a travel back in time, while still being able to enjoy the comforts of the 21st century.

  • Need a relaxing getaway? Want to go someplace out of the ordinary? Black Horse Farm just may be your retreat. You can expect quick response time to communications, easy directions to the farm, instructions for WiFi and a bowl of tasty treats waiting right inside the door. The amenities and little touches are plentiful. Comfy sheets and pillows, big thirsty cotton towels a-plenty. We visited in the cold of Winter. The house was toasty warm. The gas heater/fireplace keeps you comfortable and entertained with its beautiful, flickering flames. The big cozy furnishings are perfect for watching the flat screen or reading a book. Nestled in the gorgeous mountains of WV the little town of Franklin has a nice grocery, Walgreens and several locally owned restaurants, plus friendly towns folk. For the outdoor type everything is available from birdwatching to rock climbing. We highly recommend Darell and Cindys Black Horse Farm.

At 4,000 feet, we offer rustic accommodations that include Ulan Bator, our concentric yurt, and a shower shack located a short walk up a lighted path. With scenic views and remote tranquility just feet below the highest point in West Virginia, visitors have the opportunity to backcountry or cross-country ski, snowshoe, sled, or simply enjoy the luxury of solitude. This is the perfect getaway for winter wilderness adventurers. Visitors must snowshoe or ski in during inclement weather events.
Right now, we are only booking one party at a time to stay at our facility, so you will be the only guests up there. Ulan Bator is the center (literally and figuratively) of the Spruce Knob Mountain Center campus. During winter months we generally take a break from programming and allow the campus to hibernate. This is charming and fun, but also implies that you may need to ski or snowshoe into the place, carrying all your personal supplies including food.
This is the heart of Wild, Wonderful, West Virginia!
  • This place is one of our favorites.. so much that we decided to shoot our engagement photos in and around the yurts, and then at the peak of spruce knob. Our photographer was in awe at the architecture of the yurt, and the beauty that surrounded it. The mossy rocks, ferns and woodsy areas surrounding the property are not unnoticed. It’s like a dreamland. As you pull out you’re greeted with the most breath taking view of the mountains. It truly all is just a dream. If you don’t mind a rustic adventure, bumpy roads, and using a bath house that’s not connected to your sleeping area then you’ll be in heaven here regardless.

    Emily2020-03-16T00:00:00Z
  • My husband and I stayed here as a launching point for a short backpacking trip (Spruce Knob/Seneca Creek). Winter visitors stay in the main yurt, which is one of the more unique Airbnbs I have stayed in! You have access to a full kitchen designed for bigger groups (feels like a summer camp kitchen), the library with a nice new heater that keeps the place warm, and on the top level a sleeping space with an awesome view of the sky. We loved it. Note that there is no bathroom in the main building - you have to walk outside to get to the composting toilet or up a path to the bath house (with sinks, showers, flush toilets). This would not be the easiest place for anyone with accessibility issues or who likes a more cushy experience, but it's really fun for outdoorsy types who are used to camping and want to stay somewhere unique.

    Rachel2020-03-14T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely the best experience we’ve had on Airbnb in the states. Such a unique find! We love coming back every year with our friends. The hosts are so helpful and accommodating and super thoughtful to help make our trip amazing! They go above and beyond! It’s not a five star resort (if that’s what you’re looking for), but it has everything you need and if you’re an outdoor adventurer, this is a trip that’s hard to beat! It’s a winter wonderland out there! We’ll definitely be back!

  • One of the most unique places we have stayed through Airbnb. At nearly the top of WV, the visit greeted us with snow, which stayed us through the rest of the trip. We were met by the hosts on arrival who showed us around before leaving us along. However, if we needed anything they were only a call away. The main yurt had great amenities and a spacious kitchen. The ability for our groups spread out in to their own space was great and the individual heaters helped warm up cold nights. Bathrooms were centrally located, but warm. Near plenty of outdoor activities you can explore or just cut up with a book in the library. If you’re looking for a space for a larger group where you will have the whole place to yourself this place is hard to beat. I hope we can schedule something in the future at this place.

  • This is one of my favorite places on Earth. There is so much to do in walking distance from such a cozy YURT(!) and even more in the surrounding area. Every time I come back to this place I get to experience something new. Coming with a group to stay during a magical winter weekend was so amazing. I will most certainly be back.

    Jenn2020-02-10T00:00:00Z
  • This place is a dream. It's rustic and off the map, but if you're up for adventure then bring all of your friends. We had 16 people and could have easily have fit twice as many. The yurts are fun but the dorms are fine too. The staff at Experience Learning are fantastic; without hesitation Kyle helped us fix a flat in the snow! We will definitely be going back next year!

    Carolyn2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • An adventure worth having and sharing with friends. This is one of the most beautiful places in WV and the most unique lodging.

  • Great for large (20-40ish) person groups looking for a once in a lifetime nature and hiking focused retreat.

Enjoy pastoral Shenandoah Valley scenery on your way to visit local vineyards, caverns, Civil War sites, museums, markets, and antique shops. Be sure to check out Downtown Harrisonburg, for great dining, local shops and breweries.
  • Beautiful little cabin. Secluded without being out of the way.

    Matt2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • It's a great place for a retreat close to the woods. Recommend nearby sights: High Knob Fire Tower (if possible for sunset)

  • Wonderful little place. Worth checking out if for no other reason than to taste Ray's cooking.

    Rob2019-12-22T00:00:00Z
  • Ray and Rosemary have a very nice place, out on the edge of the woods. The cabin is very nice, and has more amenities than expected (space heater, a well stocked kitchen, free drinks, and more). The breakfast in the morning was amazing

  • Really lovely people, and the space is super cozy!

    Erica2019-11-17T00:00:00Z
  • Cannot recommend this place enough! Everything about this stay exceeded our expectations. It’s a perfect getaway to relax and unwind. Ray and Rosemary have outdone themselves with this cabin. It’s really like stepping back in time (but with running water and heat and some modern touches). Loved waking up with the rooster! PLUS - the breakfast is THE BEST. Trust us and get the sausage gravy and biscuits and do not skip the cinnamon apples. This seriously was one of the best breakfasts we’ve ever had. We’ll be back for sure!

This is a remote location near the highest mountain (Spruce Knob) in West Virginia. Great views, fun adventures, and real winter weather are the hallmarks of being here during the colder months.
  • A friendly, cozy place to stay! Staff members are kind and helpful. A great location very close to many wonderful outdoor recreation areas!

    Taylor2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • I stayed here with a few friends to get away for the weekend and it was absolutely delightful. The team here really worked hard to make us feel super comfortable at the earth lodge, and really helped us out navigating the mountain roads after sudden snowfall. Would absolutely go again!

    Allan2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • This is the perfect place for an outdoor experience. It was wicked cozy in the winter with a wood stove, and beautiful mountain views. Arlee and the other staff were super helpful and made us feel right at home. It's definitely worth the long windy road up.

    Katharine2020-01-06T00:00:00Z
  • Overall accommodations were great. We didn’t know exactly what to expect but was pretty good. For the price, it was well worth it. For anyone wanting to explore the area near the location, it will be great. We stayed here and make the drive to Snowshoe for snowboarding each day. The price we paid made it worth it! If we had the time and money, a hiking and camping trip there would be awesome also.

Our home is one of 4 current family houses on an active working farm that has been in operation since the late 18th century. The home is rich in history but recent renovations make it quite comfortable. The large patio is perfect for watching the sunset over Jack Mountain or the moon rise over the Bullpasture. Clear nights are great for stargazing. Even though your cell phone won't work there is always something to do on the farm, or local outdoor attractions are not far away.
Early 20th century farm house, located on a working farm in the remote confines of Highland County. Replete with original hardwood floors and paneling, the beautiful space has two newly remodeled bathrooms and a kitchen. Sleeps eight comfortably! No phone or internet service and cell phone coverage is not available. Emergency contact is available in the home next door, along with WiFi if desired.
  • It a very great place. The house is cozy. Adam is nice and very easy to communicate. We have a nice time there!

    Hai-Wei2020-03-10T00:00:00Z
  • Telescope nerds, this place is a must-stay. We booked this place for the dark night skies and the sheer number of stars here knocked our socks off. We brought our whole setup - a telescope with a camera mounted to it and an extension cord to run from the house. Worked well! The house is a quiet beauty and is steeped in family history. With all the books, games, farm animals and hiking available, it was so nice to get off the grid for a bit. Beds were warm and comfortable! Thanks to our hosts for sharing your space with us. Hope to be back soon!

    Sarah2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • We truly enjoyed our peaceful stay on this large and beautiful property. The starry night sky was beautiful, as were the hills and streams running through the landscape. The sheep, cows and border collie were all welcome presences, while the house itself was spacious and well-maintained. Will plan to stay again!

    Kevin Douglas2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • A beautiful, secluded little house with lots of character. We really enjoyed the cabin-feel of the house. The entire atmosphere of the house felt cozy and relaxed. Seeing sheep and horses outside the next day was an added bonus!

    Abby2020-02-08T00:00:00Z
  • This place is just beautiful! Everything about it makes it truly unique and its really a sight to see the stars and sky at night! We sat outside for a good while just gazing! We had snowfall and it was all of our families first time seeing snow! Let’s also add to the magic that when we looked down at the steps, there were deer footprints 😂 Santa left a little gift for the kids before our departure back to Miami. More about the place, just make sure to make your grocery stop before heading here, but everything you need is already there for cooking since the closest town is a bit ways away but not biggie if you know this before coming, the no wifi was actually a refresher for our family. There is an option for it.. but we opted to be without and watch some childhood movies and family games they had on hand as well. We will be coming back again hopefully! Thank you!

    Kenia2020-01-05T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great weekend and we felt at home in this very unique farm house which was a very untypical place to stay for the French travelers that we are! We enjoyed being surrounding by nature, being cut out from the world and experiencing a part of the past in this 18th century home. We would definitely come back for a future trip!

    Clara2019-11-10T00:00:00Z
  • We came to see the beautiful foliage and milky way, and both the goals were well completed. The host are really nice people from the mountain, we really love to stay here. It's such a pity that our car had a problem and we have to end the trip early, other than that it's such a beautiful place to spend the fall . Definitely the place you should come and see in your life, for both the people and the view. a big thumb up!

    Kimbol2019-11-03T00:00:00Z
  • We went during the fall and the fall foliage was amazing. The house was clean, well stocked with everything we needed, and a perfect opportunity unplug and connect with family. I highly recommend the property!

The yurt is situated near the boundary of the Monongahela National Forest and just below the summit of Spruce Knob Mountain. During your stay here you can enjoy the plentiful opportunities of trout fishing, caving, hiking, or just relax on our scenic 400 acre campus. Access to a communal kitchen and shower facility included.
Our wooden yurt, named 'Chuguchuk' for its Mongolian roots, was constructed in the '70s and renovated last year. A full-sized bed provides room for two, although it has housed a few families on occasion. A skylight provides ambient light during the day and a beautiful view of the stars at night.
  • I went in the fall and the leaves and scenery were absolutely stunningly beautiful. Our yurt was rather chilly even with the small heater so definitely take extra blankets if you go when the temperatures are down. The road was pretty rough for my little hatchback, though. If you have a small car definitely know you’re in for some rocky ruts to get into the area. Overall, It was a unique and lovely experience. I wish I could’ve stayed a little longer. I got to take some amazing pictures of the Milky Way in the dark night sky.

    Emily2019-10-25T00:00:00Z
  • It’s a great camping spot for you if you just want to unwind from the big city. There were always people to talk to and the communal area is just warm cozy. Great place to watch stars.

    Jakub2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • Nothing compares to the beauty of this place. It is remote, spiritual, clean, peaceful, and relaxing. The amenities are great (kitchen, bathrooms, wifi, electricity). This is a great spot to enjoy nature and quiet while still having some creature comforts. The road to get here is a bit rough and you need to drive a bit slow, but that's all part of the adventure and relaxation. Make sure to bring warm clothes and extra blankets!

    Arvind2019-09-08T00:00:00Z
  • Great choice for its proximity to Spruce Knob and other trails. This is a gorgeous place and very laid back and friendly

    Mimi2019-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • Experience learning was beyond my wildest expectation. The place is truly a gem hidden in wild and wonderful West Virginia and represents everything that is truly special about this wonderful state. If you are looking for a retreat to get away from the hustle and bustle of corporate/consumer life then this is the place to go and reset. Highly recommend it!

    Amad2019-08-24T00:00:00Z
  • The road to Experience Learning Center is well marked, and easy to follow. Although it is rough road and steep, and maybe a lane and half. However, it is well worth the effort. It is quiet and remote. The yurts are simple and clean, but are a great way to sleep close to nature. It was peaceful and soothing. The site provides ample access to local trailheads. We look forward to returning in the future.

    Jon2019-07-10T00:00:00Z
  • The emailed directions were super helpful. The overall atmosphere was splendid and peaceful. Stargazing is amazing on a clear night. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Perfect little getaway!

    Claire2019-06-30T00:00:00Z
  • We thoroughly enjoyed our recent two-night stay at SKMC. The remote location -- while still accessible to local scenic attractions -- was perfect for us. (Just allow plenty of time for driving between the main road and the site, especially the last mile.) The yurts are a terrific compromise between tent camping and staying in a more traditional cabin. The common areas, including the bathhouse, are remarkably clean and modern for a rustic setting. The staff were welcoming, easygoing, and knowledgeable. They answered questions and offered assistance and suggestions but also gave us plenty of privacy. They seem to have an efficient operation going. We arrived before dark the first evening, after a bit of sightseeing at Blackwater Falls and shopping in Thomas and Davis on the drive down from Pittsburgh. Once we'd gotten a quick tour of the facilities and settled in, we built a fire in the pit and roasted marshmallows for s'mores while watching fireflies light up the adjoining field. [Note to vegetarians: If you intend to eat dinner out in the immediate area, do your research but have a back-up plan. Several places Google told us would be open in Franklin until 9:00 had closed in the afternoon -- on a Saturday!] The next day we hiked a trail from the grounds up to the top of Spruce Knob, the highest point in WV, where we ate a picnic lunch and took in panoramic vistas from a wind-swept boulder field. Later that afternoon we sat on the deck outside the main yurt and watched deer frolic in the field before making ourselves dinner in the well-equipped industrial-style kitchen. After watching the sun set behind the ridge, we built another fire for s'more s'mores and fireflies. We departed mid morning the next day, with a stop on the way home at Seneca Rocks for another great (steep but fairly short) hike to an awesome vista. Our only regret upon leaving was that we didn't have more time to just chill out at the property, especially in the reading/meditation space with a bubble skylight on the upper level of the main yurt. We'd definitely return to this venue if the right opportunity arises. If we do, we'll try to time it when there's not a nearly full moon -- and we'll put in a special request for clear night skies :-) -- so we can take full advantage of the stargazing potential. We happened to be there on a weekend when there were no student groups present. If, like us, you prefer tranquility over activity, it's probably worth inquiring about that before booking.

  • We had a great time! We came for two days with our 5 and 8 year olds. They camped out on the floor and thought the whole place was magical. The yurt was cute, the bed was comfy, and we appreciated the space heater for a couple cold nights. The grounds are very beautiful and we were able to do some hiking straight out from the yurt. It’s a short walk to the main building where you can use the kitchen or hang out and play games. We’ll definitely be back.

  • Joshua and crew made this a very special “experience.” My wife and I tacked on a quick visit to WV to climb at Seneca Rocks after a family trip in the DC area. The Tagdumbash yurt was such a cool way to “experience” the area. Awesome kitchen and facilities. We’ll be back!

  • This was a great space for me to hunker down and finish the manuscript of my book. Fresh-cooked food was available from an on-site chef if needed, but I brought a cooler that I stored in a walk-in cooler and ate my own food. The scenery was spectacular, which provided a great break from my writing. Thanks!

    Thomas2019-08-18T00:00:00Z
  • Everything was very friendly, nice, and peaceful. The kitchen is in a separate building from where we slept, which was not an unreasonable walk, and was stocked with any spice or cooking tool we could have needed. It was exactly what we wanted in a quiet getaway.

  • Everything was amazing about Experience Learning's facility. The yurts are well maintained, clean, and the bed was so comfortable!! The check in directions they give you are spot on & communication from them was clear. Maria met me as soon as I parked to show me around. A few pleasant surprises, they have a laundry facility if you need it, their bathrooms are clean and in great condition (they even provide you with clean towels!), and they also provide you with cooler space for your perishables so that you can cook in their fully commercial style kitchen! I loved everything about it, would surely stay again!

Hang out cliff side at Pine Bluff. The home is build in the edge of a gigantic boulder which creates an amazing view looking out to Dry River. With so many outdoor areas to enjoy, you'll never get tired of exploring the yard and surroundings. The three bedroom, one bathroom house is a beautiful log and stone home with tons of character. Cozy rockers and roaring fires make this home a vacation spot that you'll never forget! Searching for a relaxing, memorable getaway? This home is located within George Washington National Park and only a few miles from High Knob Trail and Fire Tower. Walk from the house along the trail up to Blue Hole swimming hole located in Rawley Springs. The springs, which feed into the Dry River are said to be a place of healing. Get back to nature and still stay in touch with excellent wifi signal (cell signal is a bit more spotty). Want to get back in touch with the modern world? It's only an easy 20 minute drive to downtown historic Harrisonburg and all of its local shops, incredible dining options, museums and restored architecture.

  • Location was much more than I originally expected. Was definitely a beautiful destination- cliff side is accessible and there is a walking path around the river to the house. It’s absolutely stunning. Pictures don’t do it justice the house has plenty of room and is well designed for guests

  • Absolutely beautiful one of a kind mountain escape! You can explore just steps from the house down to the river or wake up and drink coffee and watch the deer graze in the morning! Multiple grills on the property, both gas and coal. A play set for kids! Toys etc! Multiple televisions (not that you need them) Fun for all!

  • Trip was very fun. We were lucky that the weather wasn’t to cold and we could spend time outside by the water and on the porch. Just a couple minutes out from Harrisonburg it’s surprisingly private

  • When we arrived the cabin was very clean, there were lights on the Christmas tree, and the gas fire was lit, making for a cozy and welcoming vibe. The place is spacious and has the feel of an old cabin, while all of the wood and amenities seemed very new. The stone paths and fire pit area outside make for a very cool yard and the view off the large back deck is excellent in the winter. You can hear the running water of the river from the deck, which was very peaceful. We were very happy with all aspects of this cabin and would definitely recommend it!

From the location, the yurts, even the cloudy evening that turned into clear skies with the best star gazing...I could go on and on. Definitely look forward to returning and experiencing the other things they offer. Best spur of the moment addition to a trip ever!

  • This was my favorite part of my whole road trip. I did not know West Virginia would blow me away like this. All thanks to this yurt! It made me experience this landscape like never before, totally worth the drive, and yes I made it up in my front wheel drive Jetta. I want to stay again very soon and for a few days longer. They have everything you could need to live comfortably in the paradise that the forest has to offer you. As for the night sky, if you’re from the shore like me, you will realize how small you really are after one look into a clear night sky on Spruce a Knob. Just wow. Please do yourself a favor and see for yourself.

  • I can't say enough good things about this special place. The architecture, the remote and peaceful setting, the good folks that run this school -all make for a lovely and incredibly rejuvenating experience. We will definitely visit again.

  • Well worth the drive! The yurt was clean and gorgeous, and close to beautiful trails and attractions.

  • Our stay at Experience Learning for my fiancee's birthday was all that we were hoping for in an escape from the suburbs to the mountains, and more. Experience Learning made us feel right at home in our yurt, with the perks of phenomenal food, spectacular mountains views, and the low light pollution we were looking for for stargazing. Would highly recommend the yurts at Experience Learning to anyone!

  • Beautiful, wild place. We were met by Kate, and was very pleasant and welcoming. At night, we looked at the stars, grilled meat and enjoyed. Thank you very much. We will be back.

  • This is a fantastic and unusual place to visit—and that's even aside from getting to stay in a yurt. As for the yurts, pay attention to the listing description: as far as amenities and the actual construction go, you will be staying in what is basically a bare-bones, rustic cabin with no running water, etc. (but with a very nearby bathhouse). It is the perfect accommodation for the setting, however, which is a natural, wild-feeling area with lots of hiking, wade-able creeks and streams, etc. The campus also just feels interesting and different. Really recommended for a change of pace, off the beaten path.

  • Very cosy stay in a private yurt. The staff were super friendly and helpful, one guy even walked us to the Spruce Knob trailhead. Lot of reviews mention the difficult drive up but we went up in our 2 wheel drive, small car and didn't have problems (just had to take it easy).

Simple, clean basement room on 190 acres near caves, hiking, biking, fishing. DC, Richmond are 3 1/2 hrs away, Harrisonburg 1+ hour. This is an overflow room for groups, or a camping alternative with electricity and a (shared) bathroom across the hall. Linens, towels, spring water, firewood provided. Feel free to use the picnic pavilion, 2 porches or fire pit. Hike, fish, stargaze or just relax! NO internet/ tv. No dogs allowed, not suitable for small kids. If booked see our other listings.
THANK YOU! Again, this is not a fancy room! If your expectations are high, don't book this one. During shoulder season it may have heat or a/c. If we are not running climate control in the lodge above you, there is no climate control for you. It is not soundproofed and you may hear other guests in the building. If you need to use a CPAP, there are several outlets. We run a dehumidifier but the room can get musty in wet seasons. TIP: If you haven't booked through airbnb yet, but would like to try it - you can get a $55 credit off your first trip if you join here https://www.airbnb.com/c/teresam3667?currency=USD .
This is a great getaway, or a jumping off point for spelunkers, hikers, bicyclists, motorcyclists (we are on a scenic driving loop).
  • Teresa and her husband were incredible hosts and the basement room was just what we needed. No heat in the wintertime, but with about 10 degrees outside, the basement didn’t drop below 50 and Teresa had the the heated blankets pre-warmed for us! Delicious breakfast and great advice for hiking around the area, we’re definitely planning our next trip here :)

    Shane2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Great room! Perfect location to Seneca Rocks and Nelson Rocks. Teresa is great at communicating about check-in as well as giving local tips. Loved the property and there are so many great trails to walk on. Looking forward to coming here again!

    Melissa2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • To begin with the location is a pearl in the middle of the wild and wonderful mountains of West Virginia. The accommodation was very nice, clean and soundproofed. The breakfast that Teresa and her husband made for us was traditional homemade with fresh ingredients from their field. And last but not least, Teresa and her husband are the nicest and welcoming people we ever met in our trips throughout USA. The care they put in what they do make them perfect Airbnb hosts. We would have loved to stay more than 2 days with them, we will be back for sure!

CLOSED FOR THE WINTER. Beautiful glamping tent in a scenic location on 190 acres. Escape your "normal." Travel light - linens, furniture, fire pit, many amenities provided. Pictures don't do justice to the property. We are 1 hr from Harrisonburg VA, 3 1/2 hrs from Richmond or DC, near hiking, biking, caves, great motorcycling. Outside toilet and shower tent nearby, bathrm/shower also available in main lodge, NO internet. Inquire about breakfast at $8/person/day. If booked, see other listings.
This fancy walled (aka miner's) tent has 2 real twin beds (can be made into a king bed), furniture, outdoor table and chairs, free firewood and spring water for drinking or cleaning up. You'll see loads of deer, maybe red tail hawks, owls, or a bald eagle, fox or bear. The tent is set up in a picturesque location. It has screening on the windows and a durable vinyl floor. For immediate needs, there is a pit toilet or portapotty nearby, PLUS a 2 room shower tent with 2 solar shower water bags. Otherwise, use the bathroom with shower/toilet in the main lodge. In order to give privacy, the tent is set up in an area a little off the lane. If we've had a lot of rain, you may not be able to drive all the way to the tent, and therefore, have a short hike to reach it. We can fit in an additional twin air mattress. Please request it ahead of time - $10 extra fee applies. TIP: If you haven't booked through airbnb yet, but would like to try it - you can get a $55 credit off your first trip if you join here https://www.airbnb.com/c/teresam3667?currency=USD .

  • Wow. Marcia’s place was absolutely magical. I haven’t slept that good or been that cozy in years! Despite the cold temperatures outside, Marcia’s place was warm and welcoming. The surrounding nature was so beautiful and the yurt itself is incredibly charming. Not one complaint about this stay! I visited with a friend and it was the perfect size for us. Highly recommend!

    Julie2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • Marcy’s yurt was so much fun! Such an amazingly cool place with all the creature comforts and charming touches. We’d love to come back again. When we do we will definitely bring some marshmallows for the fire pit in the back!

  • This home was amazingly beautiful.. We couldn’t have asked for more. From the amazing views, to the sounds of the water rushing by, to the small touches that really made this yurt feel like a home away from home. We will definitely be back in the future.
