在舊台東線還在時，馬蘭站是舊台東線終點站「台東站」前的前一站，也可以說是這段鐵路的倒數第二站。馬蘭早期主要是做貨運為主，以一旁的台東糖廠與中油油庫為主要客源，本身並無販售名片式車票，搭乘時以車上補票為主。
