This is the largest maritime museum in the Mediterranean. The building of the Galata is the oldest surviving construction of the dockyard of the old Republic. In the 1600s, Genoese galleys were built here, and the city’s maritime tradition is reflected today in a museum where visitors can discover the age-old relationship between man and the sea. The innovative, engaging set-up features an authentic reproduction of a Genoese galley from the 1600s and of a Brig-schooner from the 1800s, the dramatic Sala Tempesta (Storm Room), the "Italian Transatlantic ships" exhibition, and over 6000 original artefacts that tell the fascinating adventure of man at sea, from the days of Christopher Columbus to the SS Rex.
