When I crave fresh air in Paris, this park is the first place I go. It’s giant, but my favorite spot to visit is Parc de Bagatelle, especially in June, when the rose garden with 1,000 different varieties is in bloom. The Bois de Boulogne used to serve as a hunting ground for the French kings. Today it’s where Parisians go to escape the city. It’s nice to sit by Lac Inférieur, just across from the boat rental, where the pine trees give off an invigorating aroma year-round.

Perfect for a morning run, evening walk or a picnic! Better to avoid after dark as there are "other businesses' going on

Often referred to as the “lungs” of Paris (alongside the slightly larger Bois de Vincennes), Bois de Boulogne is a massive park in the west of the 16th, and is more than twice as large as New York’s Central Park. With 15 km of cycle routes and the possibility to hire wooden rowing boats on the Lac Inférieur, the park offers much more than just a nice spot to have a picnic. Several restaurants can be found in Boulogne (including the Michelin-starred Le Pré Catalan), and there is even the Jardin Shakespeare, a beautiful green garden, transformed each spring into an outdoor theatre, where plays from the famous English playwright are put on. Today, the large parkland is home to two equestrian race tracks, horse riding trials, ponds, waterfalls, hiking trials, row boats for hire, and the Roland Garros tennis complex.

At the town’s northern boundary is the sprawling Bois de Boulogne, which like many of the parks around Paris was formerly reserved for royalty to go hunting. Since the mid-1800s it’s been a public park of staggering proportions, more than two and a half times the size of New York’s Central Park. Within the Bois de Boulogne are all sorts of venues and visitor attractions that we’ll cover in the next couple of entries. But a casual everyday visitor should check out the marvellous features from when the park was landscaped as part of a gigantic engineering project during the rule of Napoleon III in the 1850s. The largest of these were the artificial cliffs, grotto and waterfall of the Gran
