Most obvious ruin pub choice, mother of all. Well, it can't be missed,so it won't be your choice only, but everybodys, so I recommend to avoid rush hours crowd and drink a coffee / something daytime and skip the entrance que for the others.

If you've spent at least 5 minutes researching the city's nightlife, then you may have come across Szimpla Kert, Budapest's iconic ruin bar. Likely you're also familiar with the ruin bar (romkocsma) concept: makeshift bars inside dilapidated pre-war buildings, furnished with quirky furniture assembled from clearance sales, and all in all exuding an inexplicably cool atmosphere.

Today, Budapest has myriad ruin bars, but Szimpla Kert, which pioneered the genre, is by far the best known internationally. Although Szimpla is no longer the offbeat bar it once was when it opened in 2004, it's still worth visiting for the experience, even if you have to navigate through camera-wielding tourists to approach the bar. A glass of beer runs €2.5, meaning that prices have remained reasonable.

The story started around 2001, so the story goes, with a bunch of young men looking for cheap places to drink. From their thirst and shallow pockets, some of the most lively and stylish places to drink in Budapest were born -- the so-called ruin bars. Derelict buildings and unused outdoor spaces have been transformed into friendly, pleasingly chaotic bars. Szimpla Kert was the first ruin bar and remains iconic, it moved around before settling into its home in the Jewish Quarter of Budapest's 7th district in 2004. It hosts a regular farmers' market and flea market, while live music and film screenings are also a regular feature.
