You can park off the main road at the bottom of Penshaw Hill. From here there’s a network of paths which take in the whole site including Penshaw Wood. However, it’s hard to resist heading straight up the steps to the Monument. Standing on top of the hill, there’s a fantastic panorama of the North East. If it’s a clear day you might be able to see as far as the Cheviot Hills 50 miles away, or spot the spire of Durham Cathedral to the South. In Spring and Summer you’ll find a wonderful display of wild flowers which carpet the hill and quarry slopes. A delicate and colourful contrast to the imposing structure of the monument. Look out for a variety of insects and butterflies in this diverse grassland habitat. There’s also the old limestone quarry on the North side of the hill, which is a good place to spot birds feeding amongst the trees. The stepped shape of Penshaw Hill is attributed to local legend - the Lambton Worm. The giant monster is said to have wrapped itself around the hill ten times. Whether you come to marvel at this grand design, appreciate the wildlife or simply stop for a picnic and enjoy the view. Penshaw Hill is well worth a climb.

Built in 1844 and modelled on the Temple of Theseus in Hephaestus, the Penshaw Monument towers over the immediate area. Officially titled ‘The Earl of Durham’s Monument’ – because it’s dedicated to the the first Earl of Durham, John Lambton – the structure is a true landmark of Sunderland. The National Trust open up a secret staircase in one of the pillars during the summer, and it’s floodlit during the night. It’s also worth mentioning that the monument is adjacent to the beautiful Herrington Country Park!

Penshaw Monument sits upon Penshaw hill adjacent to Herrington country park. The 70 foot monument is a replica of the Temple of Hephaestus in Athens and a beloved icon of the Wearside area as it can be seen for miles around. The climb to the top definitely works up an appetite and I would recommend a slice of cake from the Penshaw tea rooms upon your descent.

Great views from the top and lovely woodland walks around the back. Opposite to Penshaw you also have the lovely Herrington Park with several walks that zig zag their way around the site. There are 2 cafes located nearby, one near to the monument on the road you park on and the other one in Herrington Park itself, where you’ll also find public toilets which are pretty decent!
