Why locals recommend it
It’s exciting cycling along the canal here with my daughter on the front of my bike. There’s a skate park and two imaginative playgrounds, one for younger kids and one with big slides (put sand on to make them faster!). In summer try the splash pool, fishing, boating lake, gigs at the bandstand, and puppet shows. Make a day of it by starting with scrambled eggs or Sri Lankan breakfast of coconut pancakes with chutneys at the child-friendly Pavilion Cafe nearby, or buy picnic stuff from the shops on Lauriston Road and set up lunch as soon as the kids are hungry.

Market
“Great weekend flower market that's been on the go forever. Very busy so get there as early as you can. There's a great little pub half way along the street called the Royal Oak which is a good stopping off spot, particularly on a Sunday afternoon.”

Museum
“Museum about childhood toys and games - kids enjoy it as its set up so that they can charge around and there are indoor sandpits etc, adults love it for nostalgia factor. It's got a decent cafe too. Free (I think maybe you pay to go into the temporary exhibitions).”

Pool
“This is a nice and local outdoors swimming pool, and it's heated so you can swim throughout winter. In the summer be mindful it gets very busy so choose your slot carefully (the earlier in the day the better)”
