Tips from locals
The Lava River Cave off Hwy 97, is part of the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. At 5,211 feet in length, the northwest section of the cave is the longest continuous lava tube in Oregon.
This place is so cool! Figuratively and literally! You can walk/scramble through the nearly mile long lava tube with the kids. Its a great way to cool down on a hot day in the summer.
If you have no fear of the dark or confined spaces this is a great place to visit on a hot summer day. It stays 45 degrees in there year round. Bring a jacket.
