Weather permitting, hiking the the top of the prominent Quartzite Mountain that can be seen from town is a fun hike. Drive towards the ski hill on Flowery Trail Road, then take a right on Mud Lake road. The road can be rutted and muddy for a few miles so make sure your vehicle is appropriate. The small trailhead sign can be seen on the right near a few parking spots. The hike up can be steep in parts, but is only 3 miles roundtrip. The view at the top of the valley and town of Chewelah is quite lovely.

This is one of the only maintained trails in the area. It’s short and strenuous and gives you great views of the Chewelah Valley
