Neat spot to tour especially if you have any interest in California history. Replica of fort built by Russian traders in mid 1800s with a few original buildings. Also has exhibits and annual festival celebrating the coastal Native American tribe of this region.

Just about a 30 minute drive from Sea Ranch, Fort Ross was a thriving Russian-American Company settlement from 1812 to 1841. This commercial company chartered by Russia's tsarist government controlled all Russian exploration, trade and settlement in the North Pacific, and established permanent settlements in Alaska and California. Fort Ross was the southernmost settlement in the Russian colonization of the North American continent, and was established as an agricultural base to supply Alaska. It was the site of California's first windmills and shipbuilding, and Russian scientists were among the first to record California's cultural and natural history. It's actually quite interesting to walk through and read the history panels, see the displays and learn a bit more about the history and culture of the region. The walk down to the fort compound itself is short (1/4 mile or less) but it's a wonderful stroll through some eucalyptus shaded paths. The buildings themselves were quite interesting and offer an educational glimpse into life back in the day. There is a schoolhouse, living quarters, barn buildings and more which have plaques describing the use and purpose for each building. I believe at certain days/times, they also have some demonstrations or reenactments which would be educational for you or the kiddies as well. Tip: be sure to have $8 in cash read for parking (you'll see the Visitor's Center right by the lot). This is a great place to stop on your way to Sea Ranch!

A very interesting historic park that dates back to when the Russians had aspirations to own the California coast. The whole family will find it interesting to stroll the walls and buildings of the fort and pose for pictures by the cannons. It's about a 30 minute drive South on Highway 1 and a great day trip.
