Catch the ferry from Mapua Wharf for the 5 minute trip across the estuary to Rabbit Island where you can walk or cycle to the extensive beach. Multiple picnic areas and BBQs

Hire a bike and take a day trip out to Mapua Wharf via Rabbit Island and the Mapua Ferry. Stop by the "Grape Escape" and your choice of wineries on the way. After a short ferry ride across to Mapua Wharf, enjoy live music at the Golden Bear Brewery and fantastic neighbouring restaurants.

How else are you going to get your bike, or boots, over the Waimea River to Rabbit Island? The ferry looks like a converted landing craft, and is the eco-friendly way to enjoy the beaches and trails that are a stone's throw away from Mapua. For extra excitement, go when the tides are going out or coming in.
