Nelson's Dockyard

By far the most interesting place to visit in Antigua is Nelson's Dockyard in English Harbour. Named after Horatio Nelson, who used it to refit Ships of the Line in 1745, the Dockyard is a Unesco World Heritage Site, where you can see capstans that winched the ships onto their sides for scraping and repairing. You can see the shipwright's carpenter's pit, now a gift shop near the entrance to the Dockyard, along with two sail lofts, one located opposite the carpenter's pit, the other a present day 'aquarium,' located next to the Admirals Inn. The pillars around the aquarium are the posts that held the sail loft up. Longboats would float into the 'aquarium' with broken spars and sails which are heavy where they would be winched up into the sail loft. These two sail lofts are one of three that stood along the quay there. Only two remain.... You can see the galley bar, the Officer's Quarters, the Copper and Lumber store, plus the iron cauldrons located along the quay, used by sailors to boil pitch to tar the ships' bottoms. Visit the Dockyard Museum in the Admirals House. While there, notice the canon balls, found all over the hillsides during the 1960s, plus broken bits of china and soldiers buttons and costumes.. Enjoy the colonial architecture. Walk out to Fort Berkeley near the entrance of the Dockyard to see the battle ramparts and guns. They slung chains across the entrance to keep ships out. Notice the enormous hurricane anchors... Visit Boom Restaurant to see one of five Powder Magazines in the area. It has 14' thick walls... Gunpowder requires ventilation. Slits go in 7 feet, turn a right angle and go another 7 feet, then turn again toward the outside. You are unable to throw a match in and ignite the entire warehouse. Catch a water taxi inside the Dockyard to St. Helena (present day Antigua Slipway), where the original dockyard was built in 1728.... While there, grab a home-baked chocolate croissant and luncheon from elegant La Brasserie. Continue on to Galleon Beach, where you can rent snorkel gear and swim along the shore to Freemans Bay, a beach nearby. Arrange times for the water taxi to pick you up after visiting each destination. Ask the water taxi to take you to Fort Berkeley. Steps near the powder magazine there come down to meet the harbor. Visit Tank Bay. The mangroves feed a variety of birds and have many positive environmental benefits. English Harbour is the best hurricane hole in the Caribbean. Yachts dig their keels into the mud and lay stern to the mangroves during hurricane season September to October. Nelson's Dockyard is the best restored naval dockyard in the world. Shirley Heights and Block House are also part of the Antigua National Park and are must-visits as well. The views of the blues, blue, Caribbean Ocean, sunsets, and Antigua's entire South Coast are stunning from up there. So is the light; colors are vivid! Shirley Heights Lookout hosts a BBQ jump up every Sunday evening. Arrive early (5 pm sharp) to see the sun set. Watch for the green flash. Mind the 150 proof rum!
Historic fort overlooking the Caribbean Sea & English Harbour. It is an extension of Dockyard National Park. Include Block House, while up there, one of three powder magazines in the area. Arrive at 5:30 pm to see the sun go down over the horizon and watch for the Green Flash. Music and dancing Thursday and Sunday nights
