Parks & Nature

It's so close to home, and even when we didn't live in Newlands, we'd visit with the kids. So many people walk their dogs, walk their kiddies or run the mountain paths. Just above the parking lot at the T junction, you'll find a map that will explain the paths that you can take. The best time to go is in the morning or late afternoon when it is busiest. Enjoy! (note: you can access the forest through a pedestrian tunnel that goes under the M3 at the top of Cypress Road).

In Muizenberg, there's a great gentle surf break. You can hire wetsuits and surfboards and go for long walks. The water is warmer than the Atlantic Seaboard side. Knead serves great coffees. If you visit with kids, there's a great play area. Primi Piatti also has a safe play area at the back of the restaurant for kiddies.

Dalebrook Beach has a tidal pool and at the end of the day, you'll see all the locals of Kalk Bay arriving to take their daily swim. It's a wonderful place to go if you have young kiddies, as the area is contained and the water in the tidal pool is normally warmer than the sea. It's not as well known as nearby St James and in mid summer, you'll love the little bit of peace it offers along the beach. Note too that if nearby Muizenberg is windy, it should be wind free at Dalebrook....

An iconic beach. In summer, when the famous Cape Doctor blows, it is completely unaffected (like Newlands). It faces towards the setting sun, and in mid-summer, it's an absolute must for every visitor to Cape Town to experience. If the blazing sun is not your thing, head down at around 4/5pm for sundowners, snacks, late afternoon walks and swims if you can handle it.
