DO NOT TRY THE CHEESE AND MARMITE CROISSANTS. You will never be able to go a day without one if you do. Jokes aside, get there early, the best croissants and pastries you'll ever eat; they sell out early in season so don't be late. Get a coffee at Black Medicine next door while you wait.

We’re huge fans of the Onrus lagoon (a great spot to take little ones, especially if the lagoon is closed and it gets nice and warm in the sun). Milk’s waffle bar is a firm favourite in our family, the other food and drink is great too. An awesome setting right on the edge of the lagoon, a nice trip if you’re keen on getting out of Hermanus and exploring the neighbouring areas.

A sensational day-trip from Hermanus to this gem nestled within the grounds of Gabrielskloof. Started in Johannesburg and now taking up residence in the Overberg, Farro is a treat for the tastebuds and the kind of setting you want to settle into and enjoy for hours. The lawns are great for kids and they’ve got activity boxes for small humans which is a real treat (Lego, toys, magnetic blocks etc). Don’t leave without a doos of olive oil 🫒

A deli, lunch, picnics, platters and wine of course. I loved this from their website: "Post COVID the family decided to turn the whole farm into a food forest, supplying the deli with fresh, organic fruit and vegetables all year round. All of our dishes are homemade, from scratch, using fresh produce from our farm where possible, otherwise, ingredients are sourced in from quality-driven, trustworthy suppliers".

City/town information

Hermanus is a South African gem, the ideal holiday destination for families. As a parent of two small kids, beach access and ease of travel is important to us. There are so many beaches to choose from (the lagoon is a personal favourite as it's calm and wonderful for small kids) and the town's infrastructure can handle the holiday crowds. Checkers 60 (app) allows for easy grocery delivery to your home without having to leave the comfort of your sun lounger. The Cliff Path and Reserve are pure magic and you will leave this town feeling energised and like you've connected with the earth.

One of Hermanus' neigbouring towns, Stanford is a quaint little town that packs a punch in the food & drink scene: Springfontein Wine Estate, Madre's, Table 13, Don Gelato, Birkenhead Brewery and Jolly Roger Fynbos Distillery to name a few. Walk the main road and discover Stanford's hidden gems. Book a booze cruise at sunset (Lady Stanford River Cruise) and toast to a wonderful day in this special little town.
