The Battle of the Boyne was a battle in 1690 between the forces of the deposed King James II of England and Ireland, VII of Scotland, and those of King William III who, with his wife Queen Mary II (his cousin and James's daughter), had acceded to the Crowns of England and Scotland[b] in 1689. The battle took place across the River Boyne close to the town of Drogheda in the Kingdom of Ireland, modern-day Republic of Ireland, and resulted in a victory for William. This turned the tide in James's failed attempt to regain the British crown and ultimately aided in ensuring the continued Protestant ascendancy in Ireland. OLDBRIDGE HOUSE a restored eighteenth-century house on the battleground itself, now presents the Battle of the Boyne visitor centre (about 20 minute drive from Bovinda Cottage) is home to a great visitors centre (walks and coffee shop). The centre contains original weapons and a laser model of the battlefield. It is a treasure trove for anyone who wants to find out more about this pivotal episode in Irish and European history.

The Monasterboice (Irish: Mainistir Bhuithe) ruins are the remains of an early Christian monastic settlement in County Louth in Ireland, north of Drogheda. The ruins are a National monument of Ireland and also give their name to the local village. The monastic settlement was founded in the late 5th century by Saint Buithe (or Buite) who died around 521.[3] Poet and historian Flann Mainistrech, Flann of Monasterboice, was lector here.[4] Little is known about the monastery except for a list of abbots (759-1122). It fell into ruin after the establishment of the Cistercian Mellifont Abbey nearby in 1142.[3] A parochial church was in use at the location by the 13th century. The property is owned by the National Monuments Service and is accessible to the public.[1] Burials in the graveyard around the ruins continue in the present day. ********************** Eating Out Tip! If steak, scampi and overall great wholesome food in very comfortable surroundings is your thing - check out The Monasterboice Inn

The Maiden Tower at Mornington is very prominent in many course images and forms the main part of the club crest. The Maiden Tower and the Lady's Finger, two structures most likely to have been navigational aids for ships entering the River Boyne prior to the 1765 wall's being built. A ship approaching the river mouth would be lined up to safely enter the narrow channel when the view of the Lady's Finger was obscured behind the tower. Go down to the beach, turn left...walk down the length of the beach to the boulder wall. this area is known as 'the mouth of the Boyne' (the name of the river). The mouth being where the river washes out to the sea. This is where Bovinda washed out to the sea! Anyway, when you reach the boulder wall, turn left...this will take you to the maiden tower :)

Bettystown Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Meath. This sandy stretch makes up a considerable chunk of the coastline of this corner of Meath, and it connects with nearby Mornington Beach and Laytown Beach. The result is a beautiful 5km of sand that’s perfect for an early morning ramble, or for a paddle, if you fancy braving the chilly Irish Sea.

If you want more than a ramble you can tackle The Bettystown Sli na Slainte. A walk from Laytown to Mornington (the mouth of the Boyne) This beach walk is about 5km each way. Please note you cannot do this walk fully by beach if the tide is in. The Bettystown Sli na Slainte officially starts at Laytown train station and passes through Bettystown and Mornington, but you can walk the chunk from Bettystown to Laytown on its own, if you fancy!

Meath is known as the Royal County because it was once the seat of the High Kings of Ireland where they ruled from the Hill of Tara. The ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (Halloween) began in County Meath at the Hill of Ward (Tlachtga) over 2000 years ago. The ‘Spirits of Meath’ Festival commemorates this every October. Head out on this 1.3-km loop trail near Tara, County Meath. Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 25 min to complete. This trail is great for birding, hiking, and walking. Lovely views of the countryside....best done on a warm day as it can be quite windy as it's quite exposed. Maguires of Tara Coffee Shop also worth a visit. Great food and a super gift store with gift ideas from local craft people. (30 minutes from Bovinda Cottage)

Tribe is about 20 minutes away but a unique experience for most. It's run by 4 siblings in a converted Church in Duleek. It has a great outdoor space for dining (amongst quiet guests resting in their graves). It's well covered with plenty of heating for those Irish chilly evenings. Inside the church is beautifully decorated - simple opulence (is there such a thing?) Anyway, pizzas are great, the cocktail bar is super and they offer a nice choice of pasta and grill items. Closed Tues & Wed. Sat and Sunday they have a great brunch offering from 11am.

Food Shopping

The nearest shop to Bovinda Cottage unfortunately burnt down May 2022. Whilst we hope to see it back soon we have a Tesco Superstore in town. Turn right at the XXI Ice Cream shop in the village centre. Pass the row of shops set off the road (butchers, hardware, chipper). If you're driving - take the next left, go under the arch and follow the road around to the shops carpark. If you're walking, continue along the row of (unfortunately tired looking apartments) and you will come to the Tesco Plaza. (Opposite McDonaghs - The Thatch winebar and coffee house.

Mr Price in the centre of Bettystown is to my mind a little over branded :( However, it offers easy access to picking up essentials from Tea/Coffee to the toothbrush you left at home! This is also where you'll go if you want to find a beach ball, bucket and spade, blow up bed etc! I would normally direct to our local Centra, but you wont have missed the derelict looking site in the village centre. The shop went on fire mid May. Thankfully no one was hurt. It was a great convenience for all and we hope to see it opening again very soon :)
