Sightseeing

At Altamont you can take a lovely stroll around the gardens taking in the pond, more than a few flowers and, if you're lucky, catch a glimpse of the peacocks wandering around. Finish off the walk with a nice cup of tea and a bite to eat at the end.

Another fantastic ancient castle that's just 20 minutes away in Clonegal. It's possible to take a tour through the old walls of the turret-shaped building and encounter impressive suits of armour, old paintings and a beautiful conservatory. There's also a sizeable garden to take a wander through. The cafè on site in the courtyard is also a lovely place to go for a cup of tea or coffee with a sweet treat on the side.

For hiking, this is the place. You can start your ascent to Lugnaquilla from Glenmalure or you can stop off at any number of trails and have a really nice hike through the stunning Wicklow Mountains. There's also a cosy pub to get some grub in after your busy day walking.

Go to see the ancient ruins or take a walk along the river Barrow all the way to the picturesque town of Graiguenamanagh about 8km away. The trail makes up part of the Barrow Way which stretches along the banks of the river through three counties and is well worth looking into. Even if you don't want to do the full walk it's great for a stroll either way. There is also a small cafè serving sweet treats, coffee and sandwiches. Look up 'The Mullicháin Cafè' on maps. St. Mullin's is about 45 minutes away from us.

Take the fascinating tour of the famous woollen mills started by three sisters in the small and pretty village of Avoca. The tour takes you right through from the inception of the business to today where you can see the weavers make Avoca's famous cloths. Eat up in the restaurant or grab a few of Avoca's shawls, blankets and clothes in the shop opposite. Avoca is about 5 minutes from Glenmalure so it could be an idea to see the two in one day.
