This is a great place for homemade thai cuisine with a new menu that includes other specialties. It has grown over the years, and has a lot more seating than it used to, but we often call-in for take out to avoid lines after a long day in the Park.

The Lodge restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The dining area is stunning with a very old monstrous fireplace. Take some time during your visit to read some of the history and pieces embedded in the fireplace itself. The food is outstanding. This is one of our choices to go for special occasion dinners.

Volcano House may not be the cheapest meal in town, but the food is very good, and the picture window views of the Halema'uma'u at the summit of Kilauea are unbeatable. They also feature a bar area, and there is a shop within the hotel area, as well as the huge stone fireplace to warm up by. A viewing area between the restaurant and bar is a great place to relax and just take in Kilauea.

Parks & Nature

Likely the reason you came to visit our area. Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park has many touristy hotspots, but staying in close proximity will allow you to beat the crowds to popular spots such as the Kilauea caldera, steam vents, Kilauea Iki, Nahuku (Thurston) lava tube and also see the sights that are off the beaten path. The visitor center, Volcano Art Center and Volcano House are also fantastic spots to learn more about the area and culture and offer escapes on rainy days.

Only about 40 minutes drive from our house is Richardson Ocean Park. It's a great protected beach for families and offers some great snorkeling. It's one of our preferred beaches to go to because it is mostly protected, but be sure to check with the lifeguard stationed there for the current conditions.

This beautiful black sand beach is a great spot to see sunning turtles and enjoy the ocean views or whale watch during the whale season. Swimming can be great if the seas are calm. It's a gorgeous spot, that is worthy of being seen even if you don't plan to utilize the beach.

The second working coffee mill just a short drive from our location. We love the location of this mill in the quiet town of Pahala (just across from the iconic Punalum'u Black Sand Beach). Here you can sample their variety of coffees and mac nuts. Buy a cup of coffee for your drive along the Ka'u district or buy some bags of delicious coffee to take home.
