The ancient market town of Maldon sits proudly perched on the top of a steep hill. It has a fascinating and diverse history and a vibrant community feel to it, bringing visitors back time and again. With an architecturally interesting High Street filled with independent shops, the town attracts both local people and interested tourists. Follow the hill down towards the waterfront and breathe in the fresh air from the saltmarshes. https://www.visitmaldondistrict.co.uk/explore/The-Town-Of-Maldon.aspx

Hidden gem - not even all the locals know about this one. Located at the very end of a private residential track it hosts the best smoked seafood, cheese and meats. Take your own drink as it is not licensed, however they provide soft drinks and glassware. Great outdoor seating in the summer right along the river or cosy up in the snug for winter dining with heating.

Best Chinese we have ever had. Consistently outstanding and that includes dine in or take away. The friendly staff make you so welcome, the newly refurbished restaurant makes a beautiful evening out, especially for special occasions.

We are lucky enough to have the home of the world renowned Wilking & Son Tiptree head office just up the road. This is the main factory and features a small museum and amazing tea shop where you can also purchase the range of jams, chutneys, gins, candles, gifts and more.

This fabulous tea shop is located just 2 locks down upstream towards Chelmsford. About a 30 min walk along the tow path - alternatively you can drive, plenty of parking charged at £5 per day. Great selection of cakes and afternoon tea while you dine right alongside the canal.

The Bell Woodham Walter offers bistro style dining in a local pub within walking distance. Located at the far end of the village at the bottom of Bell Meadow near the church. This historic building provides locally sourced and home cooked food with a lovely selection of ales. Booking is recommended as it does get quite busy. Lovely open fire in the winter.

Like stepping back in time. Old traditional pub with no music or fruit machines just good old fashioned conversation. The Cats is run by a charming couple who really do make the most of this stunning pub set in the heart of the beautiful countryside. Snuggle up with the 2 log burners inside during the colder months or sit and look out across the ploughed fields during the summer from the garden. If your lucky enough you might get to see the steam engines fire up in the car park. A ploughman’s is served Thurs - Sat but no food any other times. The cats is a cash only bar so no credit card terminals I am afraid. Within walking distance, situate down Blue Mill Lane about a 10 mins from boat - you will need torches for evening time.

Beautiful tea room with pretty garden area when the weather is good. Fabulous breakfast menu and the afternoon tea is a must! They do not take reservations and it can be quite busy in the peak season but we’ll the wait if you have to.

Things To Do

Looking for a day out in the area
One of England’s top zoo’s. Perfect for a whole day out and only about 30 mins drive away (15 miles) Plenty to see - you can even prebook to be a zoo keeper for the day and hand feed the animals! We normally take a picnic but there are food vendors on site to enjoy.
