The Huckleberry Trail is now more than 11 miles long! Lots of places to explore and get on the trail to include two places behind the mall (Uptown Christiansburg formerly New River Valley mall) in Christiansburg. One is behind the movie theatre and the other is in the back behind Kohls and Planet Fitness. If you head to the right (towards Blacksburg) it is a bit more scenic. Mostly flat and paved throughout the trail. Lots of different scenery depending where you opt to get on.

This is about 15-20 minutes from the townhouse. Falls Ridge Preserve features one of the more unique waterfalls in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains. It's an 80-foot waterfall that flows over a combination of rocks and vegetation, giving it a very distinct look. There are two hiking trails at Falls Ridge Preserve - the Red Trail (Chamberlain Trail) and Silver Trail (Bradley Trail). You'll begin the hike from the parking area on the Red Trail, which runs parallel to the water. Then, turn right and follow the Silver Trail for more views of the water. The Silver Trail will reconnect with the Red Trail after 0.8 miles and then you can either turn left and complete the loop, or turn right and complete the full loop of the Red Trail, which is approximately 3 miles. The parking area can be reached via Exit 128 off Interstate 81. Travel west on Route 603/North Fork Road for 7 miles and then turn left on Falls Ridge Road and go over the narrow red bridge. Take Falls Ridge Road over the railroad tracks and take the immediate left onto a gravel road. Continue on the gravel road until you reach a fork and bear left at the fork. Park on the side of the road at the preserve entrance sign and the trailhead is across the open field.

4.6-mile out-and-back trail near Catawba, Virginia. Generally considered a challenging route. This is a very popular area for birding and hiking, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring. Several rock scrambles on the hike so may not be best for dogs.

If time permits, this Memorial seems worth the visit. About 1 1/4 - 1 1/2 hours from townhouse. On June 6, 1944, 35 boys in one company from Bedford, Virginia, with 150,000 other young men, boarded landing craft for the beaches of France for the D-Day invasion. By the end of that one day, nearly 4,500 allied soldiers lost their lives -- nineteen of those killed were from Bedford.
