City advice

Getting around

Parking in Luray

There is plenty of street parking (just don't park on the Main Street bridge!). There's also several public parking lots located around town. You can find them across from the Visitors Center, behind Blue Ridge Bank and Page One thrift store, and next to the Greenway off Mechanic Street (by the small bridge).
Ways to save

Free Concerts

Make sure to check out the Music on Main lineup! In the summertime, Luray hosts free public concerts at Ruffner Plaza featuring a variety of bands.
Don't miss

Fourth of July

Stanley and Luray have wonderful fireworks shows every Independence Day. Be sure to get to the viewing location early to find a parking spot. Bring a lawn chair/picnic blanket, snacks, a cooler with drinks and bug spray!!
Customs and culture

Pet Names FYI

Appalachian folks are very friendly and don't put on airs. Locals, particularly those who work in food service, may refer to you as "baby," "honey" and/or "sweetheart." This is not meant to be condescending, flirtatious or demeaning, so please don't be taken aback if someone refers to you as such!
Book before you go

Luray Caverns

Parking and crowds can be super congested, especially on weekends. Get your tickets ahead of time and remember to bring a sun shade for your car in the summer (or your car will be an oven! There's hardly any shady spots in the parking lot).
Book before you go

SNP & Old Rag Mountain

I recommend purchasing a park pass if you don't already have one (there will be an entry fee into Shenandoah National Park, like any federal/state park). You can get these at the gate and they're good for a year. Also, pre-purchase your day-use ticket to hike Old Rag as there are a limited number of people allowed in per day; this is to preserve the beauty of the trail and mountain ecosystem. And remember— this is NOT an easy hike!
Ways to save

George Washington National Forest

There's no entry fee to visit, plus it's right next to Page County so it's an easy drive! GW National Forest boasts beautiful views of the valley and great hiking.
