The Alfama is the oldest district of Lisbon, spreading on the slope between the São Jorge Castle and the Tejo river. Its name comes from the Arabic Al-hamma, meaning "hot fountains" or "baths". The district includes the freguesias of São Miguel, Santo Estêvão, São Vicente de Fora and part of the two streets, "Freguesia da Sé: Rua do Barão" and "Rua São João da Praça". It contains many important historical attractions, as well as an abundance of Fado bars and restaurants.

It is a cosmopolitan suburb of the Portuguese capital and one of the richest municipalities in Portugal. Cascais ranks 9th in population density and 6th in percentage of population employed among Portuguese municipalities. The population in 2011 was 206,479, in an area of 97.40 km2. The former fishing village gained fame as a resort for Portugal's royal family in the late 19th century and early 20th century. In 2017, the online Portuguese newspaper Observador ranked Cascais as the third best Portuguese city to live in, after Lisbon and Porto. Nowadays, it is a popular vacation spot for both Portuguese and foreign tourists.

I can't find a photo of Sintra (it says Cafe Sintra here but I am not referring to the cafe). Go to Sintra, it is quiet charming, with little shops for souvenirs and its great walking around the Sintra area. The historic centre of the Vila de Sintra is famous for its 19th-century Romanticist architecture, historic estates & villas, gardens, and numerous royal palaces & castles, which resulted in the classification of the town and its historic passage as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sintra is similarly known for its numerous gardens and nature parks, including the Sintra-Cascais Nature Park and the Sintra Mountains. Sintra's most iconic landmarks include the mediaeval Castle of the Moors, the romanticist Pena National Palace and the Portuguese Renaissance Sintra National Palace.

Bars

This bar is 1-2 mins walk from our place. The people are from around Monte Estoril, locals or tourists. 8pm-11pm is nice and peaceful bar. After 11pm, it can get crowded with lots of local people. Overall, the crowd are people who is drinking with friends, no drunks. A great place to get a drink Amazing old school bar where time stood still. No smoking laws are not enforced here - the owner does not care. 80's music from Toto's Africa, Spandau Ballet and Talking Heads make up the soundtrack to classy classic cocktails. Try the Hendriks Gin and Tonic with Cucumber or cold Vodka Martinis. Beers are cold. The crowd gets younger as the night turns to morning.

This restaurant is in Parede, which is about 7-10 mins drive from our place, good food, reasonable prices. This Restaurant is among our favourites in Portugal. Service and Food are, and the price is right. The owner is always present, mostly in the Kitchen. The bar staff is knowledgeable about wine and always finds something we like in their wine store. The menu is mainly Portuguese with fresh seafood. And if you fancy a steak, this is the place too. It is around 20 euro per head, main course & glass of wine

Beautiful decor, this picture is the boring part of the restaurant, last the other parts are very cool. Do get a seat at the sushi bar. This is the best sushi and Japanese restaurant in Lisbon (this is coming from a Japanese food lover who eats in the best Japanese restaurants around the world and of course in Japan) I recommend some sushi, robatayaki (skewers grilled over charcoal), tempura, some starters, sea weed. Yummy! Depending on how much you can eat, it can be from 30+ euro per head. BY THE WAY, do ask for NO sushi with cheese!!!! Don't ask why! The Portuguese puts cream cheese in some sushi in every Japanese restaurant in Portugal. At times I see kiwi fruit, strawberry, pineapple too. I just laugh but you will have to ask them NOT to put any of this in.

If you come here on the weekends especially, you will see the Porsche 911, Mercedes GT, Bentley, Maserati all parked outside. In a normal cafe, coffee will be around 1-1.20, here it is around 2 euro. Drinks and pastries are around 25-50% more but it is worth it and we are talking about a few euros more for the whole bill. The pastries are really good, great location, great cafe.

Parks and Playgrounds

The Jardim dos Passarinhos, "park of the little birds", is a beautiful small neighbourhood park and garden. On many Thursdays and Sundays, there's a flee market happening. The trees are decorated with stars during the Christmas period. Children enjoy the playground with a seesaw, swings and climbing castle. Older visitors sit around the park's kiosk that serves drinks and snacks. The park is a reference point for many locals when giving directions to this neighbourhood: "When you get to the Jardim dos Passarinhos, turn left ......"

Lisbon's flea market is called "Feira da Ladra," often thought to mean "Thieves' Market" (in Portuguese, "ladra" is a woman thief) but it actually derives from "ladro," a bug or a flea found in antiques. A market of this type is thought to have been in place in Lisbon since the 12th Century, and the name "Feira da Ladra" was first mentioned in the 17th Century. The traders here are perfectly legal, offering everything from junk to unexpected treasures, around the Campo de Santa Clara, a square by the National Pantheon. The market is held every Tuesday and Saturday, from dawn to the early afternoon. There are small stalls, but many traders simply display their store on a stretched-out blanket. Hand-made artisan goods, CD's, books, clothes, coins, military objects, antiques and furniture are all on display here, so the occasional bargain is still possible.
