The best things to do in Almeria!

Did you know that Almería is a region with the most sun hours in Europe during the year? The perfect destination to go on holiday if you ask me. From cities like Málaga or Granada, within less than 2 hours you can already be at this amazing place and enjoy the beach and cool activities. Almería is the ideal destination to enjoy the beach and relax. It is still a bit of an unknown city in the South of Spain, but slowly it is getting more and more popular. Are you wondering about the best things to do in Almería? I will share some of my favorite activities!
I like outdoor activities so visiting the Conjunto Monumental de La Alcazaba is one of my favorite things to do in Almería. You can visit this fortress for free. I recommend doing a tour with one of the guides who’ll bring the essence of this Moorish fortress to life. Be prepared to climb to get to the fortress, I promise it will be worth it as the views are amazing!

One of the best ways to explore the area around Almería is by kayak. Kayaking in Almería is extra special because you will be kayaking in a transparent kayak! Navigate over the crystal-clear waters and enjoy the flora and fauna beneath your kayak as well! This transparent kayak tour will depart from Playa San José towards the volcanic environment of the Natural Park of Cabo de Gata-Nijar

The only real desert in Europe lies in the interior of Almería! The sun shines for over 3,000 hours a year and it hardly ever rains. Nature lovers, hikers and people who are looking for a big, exotic American-type scenery, fall in love with this wild landscape of eastern Andalusia. The desert is a protected natural park and has attracted film crews since the 1950s. The unique landscape has brought wealth and fame and made the area known worldwide. Many great directors have filmed here; westerns, war films and fantasy adventures have all been filmed in the Southeastern corner of Spain. Production costs were often cheaper than in the US and the desert is close to all the amenities you need as a film crew. In 1989, the Andalusian Regional Government issued a decree that the landscapes around Nijar and Tabernas should be protected for the use of the film industry.

Almeria was declared Gastronomic Capital of Spain for 2019. Currently Almeria has 31,614 hectares of greenhouses and is often called the Pantry of Europe. Each month of the year Almeria will have a different theme to showcase their local produce and typical recipes. This city is the home to amazing people, food, and culture. The local people are very friendly and the food, the drinks and the views are spectacular! The challenge is that many places are not designed with English speaking tourists in mind... So I can recommend you the gastronomic tour "Secrets of Almería" to start your trip. Www.secretsofalmeria.com What does the tour includes: This is a 4-5 hour walking tour. Be prepared to walk, eat and drink your way through the historic neighborhood of Almería!! You will enjoy a tour of the central market, eat at some of good tapas bars and be sprinkled in bits of historical information, make quick stops to interesting sites along the way and point out great places to check out after the tour...but most importantly a lot of fun the Spanish way! Food and drinks included - pre set menu. If you have special food needs, please state at booking so that they can accommodate.

Probably the most popular food in Almeria is the local fish. The Port of Almeria has many fishermen going out daily. There is an interesting iniciative called "Del Barco a la mesa" (Boat to Table) This initiative arranges sales of fish (online store) straight from the dock to your table. It supports the local fisherman. They are also involved in a project to monitor plastic in the sea. Taking note of the plastic they find and bringing it back to port for correct disposal.

Typical Almeria dishes: Local food includes dishes such as Ajoblanco. An almond and garlic cold soup often served with a few grapes. This is perfect for hot days and clearly of arab origin. Migas made from semola. This dish looks like cous cous. Usually served with green peppers, chorizo and other ingredients. Calamares en aceite – This is very tender. Slow cooked in olive oil and white wine, with a touch of garlic. Gurullos – A type of pasta usually served with rabbit or chick peas. It is usually a hearty dish like a thick stew. Ajo colorao – A fish stew made with mashed potatoes, dried red peppers and cumin. Almeria is also a great city to enjoy tapas. The most popular one is Cherigan. This is a piece of bread with different toppings. In Almeria free tapas are served. When you order a drink they offer a complimentary dish. Some have a list of choices, others bring out the tapa of the day for you!

Out in Almeria province, the town of Serón has delicious cheese. Look out for this goats cheese called Seronés. It also has some good local wine too. I have tried a white wine called Saetías from the area, it's really good!

Before reaching the Arab fortress, the Alcazaba, you pass the Almedina barrio, where a neighbourhood association is at work conserving Almería’s Muslim heritage, the spirit of al-Andalus. This tiny restaurant with courtyard is part of that initiative, and well worth visiting en route to the fort for its legendary limón a la hierbabuena. Although while there you could also go for a few pastries stuffed with dates, chocolate, honey and nuts. • C/Paz 2, +34 629 827, teteriaalmedina.com
