Best for fresh pastries and a coffee seated outside watching the world go by - alternatively pop over to Woolworths who make (in my humble opinion!) the best coffee to go (and almond croissants from the in-store bakery)

Tucked away little gem - a great coffee spot with an outdoor garden under the trees - rather eclectic. Its rather hard to spot - so look for the large green hedge on Belvedere Road - there is a gate in the middle - that's the entrance!

CLIFTON BEACHES Scenic beaches with the dramatic backdrop of the Twelve Apostles mountains and Lion's Head. Clifton Beach is a gorgeous beach with fine, white sand. The water is icy though! If the wind is blowing south east, this beach is the most protected beach in CT. Perfect for suntanning and clamouring over the boulders from Clifton Fourth Beach down to Clifton First. Take a picnic and watch the sunset from Clifton Fourth. For an easy picnic, collect Nando's Chicken (a South African Institution) from Main Road (up from Beach Road). Sea Point, on your way to Clifton.

At Llandudno there are huge rounded boulders surrounding the beach and the hillside is dotted with the homes of the rich and famous! Walk up onto the rocks to the right of the beach and watch the waves break below. Parking is a nightmare there so be prepared to park and walk down the steep hill.

Everything Else

There is a very interesting museum at Groote Schuur Hospital all about the World's First Heart Transplant. The story behind this historical feat - really interesting but might be a little too much for little children - my then 10 year old sat outside the operating theatre as she felt the wax models were too lifelike! Older kids will really enjoy it.

Sightseeing

Either climb or take the cable car. Choose a clear day. If you decide to climb Table Mountain you could start at Kirstenbosch and climb up Skeleton Gorge (not as scary as it sounds!) and follow the Hoerikwaggo Trail signs to Maclear’s Beacon and across the table top to the cable station. It takes about three and a half hours. Alternatively, could climb up Platteklip Gorge below the cable station which is quicker (about 2 hours) but steep and no shade. Suggest you then take the cable car down. Go well prepared with water and a warm fleece in case the weather turns. It can often be hot at the bottom but windy and cold on top.

Getting Around

A great way to find your bearings when you first arrive! Get on at the V&A Waterfront or even at Kirstenbosch Gardens and the bus will give you are guided tour around the peninsula. Book online for further details - we did it recently and were tourists in our own city - great fun!
