City advice

Don't miss

Historic city

KC is very old, one of the oldest established cities on the Route 66 stagecoach line. Many buildings are historical, some people mistake aged areas for being dangerous or run-down. In reality, most of the oldest parts of town are actually the safer areas and have many unique sites and architectural styles!
What to pack

Changeable weather, check ahead

KC can fluctuate from hot and sunny to chilly and rainy in a single day, typical of the Midwestern US. Check weather ahead and plan accordingly.
Customs and culture

Cards accepted everywhere

Carrying lots of cash isn't needed or recommended, card payment is accepted everywhere.
Customs and culture

Restaurant tipping

This area has a tipping policy for restaurant service like much of the USA. It will usually be made clear on the check what typical amounts are with calculations for convenience. Typically you do not tip on the value of tax.
Customs and culture

Mask policy - Covid

KC is a conscientious and neighborly city. Most residents have been vaccinated against Covid 19. Many businesses still require masking indoors and most locals wear them voluntarily even in non-required areas so you may see this commonly still as of Summer 2022.
Getting around

We have odd traffic

There is always road improvement here somewhere and often lanes are not clearly marked, we recommend using Google maps gps as it knows current road conditions. Uber or Lyft are also good choices as it is easy to get dropped off and spend a day walking around certain neighborhoods or districts. City travel is free mostly including buses, trolleys, trains.
Getting around

The airport

The airport is easy to get around inside but park on site and not at the far-away lots that require a bus. The bus situation is confusing and they are poorly labeled which could cause delays. Pay the small amount extra and use the closer on site parking.
