Silbury Hill is 13 minutes from Sussex Cottage. It is the largest artificial mound in Europe. Probably completed in around 2400 BC, Silbury Hill is part of the Avebury World Heritage Site, and a Site of Special Scientific Interest. It's a crazy place and it's on the doorstep, so take a look. It only takes about an hour. If you want to travel by public transport, take the 49 Bus from the top of Sussex Wharf and get off at Beckhampton Roundabout. Head east down the A4 towards Marlborough past the Waggon and Horses (great pub). Silbury Hill is about 1200 metres past the pub on the left.

West Kennet Long Barrow is about half a mile south of Silbury Hill (From Sussex Cottage; 13 minutes in the car, 20 minutes on the 49 Bus, with a 1 mile walk at the other end). The Long Barrow is a subterranean rectangular burial chamber enclosed by kerb-stones. The precise date of construction is unknown. Human bones were placed within the chamber, probably between 3670 and 3635 BC, representing a mixture of men, women, children and adults. It was used as a burial space, receiving both human and animal remains over a period of several centuries. Various flint tools and ceramic sherds were also placed within it during this time.

The Caen Hill flight of canal locks are just 900 metres downstream of Sussex Cottage on the Kennet and Avon Canal. The 29 locks in the Caen Hill flight raise the canal 237 feet over 2 miles (1:44 gradient). Built in 1810, they were the final part of the 87 mile Kennet and Avon Canal to be completed, linking the sea port of Bristol (via the River Avon) to the River Kennet in Reading, and onto the Thames. It's a great walk on a Sunday morning. But remember, you'll arrive at the top . . . .going down is easy. Coming back home might be more tiring! There's a cafe at the top of the lock flight if you need a rest.
