City/town information

Government Hill in Charlotte Amalie and Black beards castle is the historic area of St. Thomas. It is worth a visit. I like to start at the castle (just a simple structure where the pirate secured himself and watched for trouble). Many of the old Danish homes are there. Walk down the 99 steps and you are back in Charlotte Amalie.

Walk up and down the old alleys called passage ways. Many shops. Good restaurants include Amalie Maison, Cafe Amalie, Virgilios and many others.

St. John is a short ferry ride from St. Thomas. It's a beautiful island with many great beaches. You can take the passenger ferry or the car ferry. The advantage of the car is that you can see more of St. John at your own pace.

Useful phrases

Water and Ice are safe. Taxis are expensive.

It is considered rude to walk past people or enter a room without greeting the person. When you initiate any exchange with others it is expected to say "good morning" "good afternoon" and "good night". Good night is a greeting on the island just as Buenos Noches (good night) in Spanish speaking countries. The people are friendly and helpful on the island.
