Trails/Beaches/Lake Superior and Lake Superior Park

This Lake Superior Beach is shallow, usually warm, has a sand bottom and a long white sand beach; perfect for a day at the beach no matter your age, whether or not you swim! This is the land of Group of Seven painter A.Y. Jackson....once you visit Sandy Beach, you’ll see why he painted the western rocky shoreline of the beach.

Beautiful deep water bay on the eastern shore of Lake Superior...the view is incredibly beautiful and a walk along the shore will make your day! Across the road is the Nokomis Trail, an approximately 10km loop that will take you to the top of the big hill overlooking Old Woman Bay, affording you an incredible Lake Superior vista that you will want to capture both in your memory and in your photo album.

Wawa Lake is right downtown and you can swim in the pristine water, dive off the new docks, stroll on the boardwalks and check out the mining history, all while taking in the incredible view of this deep stream fed lake.

Beautiful and rugged Lake Superior bay! The trail head is directly across the highway from Fenton Treeby parking lot ( where you will park) and is indicated by a blue trail sign. The trail is moderate with a couple of slightly difficult areas but is basically a trail for many ability levels. You will cross a river, go through forested areas with rock walls, trek beside a small lake, cross an ancient lake bed and come out at Noisy Bay, a beautiful rock beach on Lake Superior. Lots of flora and fauna to see and photograph and the Lake Superior view is worth the trek.

The pictographs are a must see, if just for the short hike from the parking lot to the rugged bay where the pictographs are. Most people will not see more than the first one or two due to the extreme hazard involved ( the lake is rarely calm here and whine there is a rope to hang onto, there are park signs warning of danger in attempting to see the pictographs far down the rock face. The trek to the pictographs is stunningly beautiful and you won’t be sorry you took the time to hike down to the bay. While you are there, hike the very short distance to Sinclair Cove, a beautiful Lake Superior busts and boat launch.

This is a beautiful trail in Lake Superior Provincial Park that is directly across highway 17 from Rabbit Blanket Lake Visitor Center. The trail is moderate with an easy start and takes you through an old growth cedar forest, home to numerous birds. The river is slow moving and gentle along the flat part of the trail and then becomes louder and more aggressive as you continue until you reach the cascading waterfall. There are many things to see on this trail on a good day; otters, squirrels, chipmunks, birds, foxes, wildflowers, vibrant mosses, rushing water....a wonderful trail suitable for just about anyone of any ability.

Beautiful double beach area on the Coastal Trail. Great picnic place with tables on both beaches and under the tree canopy between the parking lot and the beach. Incredibly beautiful and serene; the Lizard Islands float in the distance. This is a must see spot and allows you easy access to the famous Coastal Trail where photo ops are plentiful and memorable!

Beautiful deep water bay on Lake Superior, just a few minutes from Marina Bay House, on the way to Sandy Beach. It’s completely different than Sandy Beach; both are incredibly beautiful Lake Superior beaches and are as different as night and day!

Food scene

The newly renovated Wawa Motor Inn Bar and Grill is a great spot for standard pub fare with tables, booths and bar seating…it can be busy and slightly noisy but generally a decent meal with quick service.

GROCERIES/Food

This is Wawa’s only grocery store and hours are limited in terms of what you may be used to in larger cities and towns. The store typically closes at 6pm, Mondays-Saturdays, Sunday at 5:00 pm. This store makes the best chicken Caesar salad with plenty of fresh bacon and grated Parmesan…we love it and it’s a steal at $11 and is enough for 3 or 4. Their in-house Greek salad is amazing too! They have a hot food section with chicken etc and it’s quick and ready to go. For a smaller grocery store, it has decent produce, dairy and dry and canned goods sections. Meat is good but often selection is limited.

Neighbourhoods

Michipicoten River Village, where Marina Bay House is located, is locally referred to as “the Mission”. Historically, the village was home to a beautiful wood church and just across the bay on the banks of the Michipicoten River, the Hudson Bay Company and its many buildings on its extensive grounds. Today, the village is a quiet, safe and friendly neighbourhood where you are as likely to see horses being lead down the road as you are bald eagles watching over the bay from tree tops. In the village, walking and biking are safe and when you meet locals, they will definitely say hello with a smile! Soak up the small village vibe, relax on the front porch, take in the view…it’s all yours to enjoy.
