A small slice of paradise on the sunny side of Lough Derg:-) The boathouse is self contained with full kitchen, bathroom and mezzanine bed. Private veranda with seating for 2 and a small BBQ. (No pets allowed)
  • Barry’s place was everything we could have hoped for. Such a cute cabin right on Lough Derg. Barry was one of the nicest hosts we’ve ever encountered. STAY HERE!!

  • Looking for a quiet and relaxing retreat? Barry's place is what you've been looking for! The cottage is on Lough Derg and the only things you can hear are the water and the birds singing... Barry was such a great host, very fast reacting and replying to queries, his mum was lovely too. Would definitely recommend going there!

    Alexane2020-03-17T00:00:00Z
  • So beautiful and tranquil.... The perfect getaway and Barry was so helpful and accommodating😊

  • This is one of the best AirBnB's that I've ever stayed in, and completely represents everything that is great about this platform - a unique space, in a beautiful location, hosted by a genuinely friendly and welcoming person. The place is exactly as described - it is right on the water and the doors and windows frame the lake beautifully and make it feel like the lake is all yours. Barry is a great host - on hand for anything we needed! Can't recommend this place enough.

    Tim2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • It’s a lovely spot right beside Lough Derg. Very peaceful and calm. The place is cosy and clean. The only issue I found is that the cabin isn’t very private. There are blinds on most windows but they don’t give much privacy and it’s easy for someone to come around without much warning. Apart from that everything is absolutely great - I would defiantly recommend. A very relaxing little spot.

    Dora2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • This is a lovely spot to while away a few days and get away from it all. It's a bird watchers paradise, even has a resident kingfisher. If you get up early enough you will see him close up along with the sunrise over the lake. Magical. Barry is the perfect host and lives behind so all your needs are well looked after. If you have a canoe or stand up it's an ideal spot to get on this beautiful stretch of water. The stove in the evening is really cosy and the boathouse has everything you need. Be aware that the climb up and down to the mezzanine bed is short but properly vertical. Fine for the average person. I loved the time I spent there and have it on my list to go back.

    Orla2020-03-06T00:00:00Z
  • Little house in dream about the lake. Waking up in the morning overlooking the lake and the coast on the other side and falling asleep to the sound of the water next to the wood burning fireplace. A true haven of peace and tranquility. In addition Barry worried that we were at all times at ease, he left us with fresh firewood and recommendations on places to visit. Thanks Barry for your kindness !!

  • Great place for people with dogs, especially with a nature walk right outside your door. Ann responded quickly and the place was spotless. Upon arrival there was milk in the fridge. Also butter, sugar, tea bags and essentials after a long drive! Good privacy, heating, comfy beds and space. One tip; be sure to have access to a car if you wish to visit local landmarks, Galway etc

  • If you a looking for a peaceful, tranquil setting and great value for money look no further. Anne’s place is beautiful, spotlessly clean, has lovely comfortable beds, good kitchen and cooking facilities and a relaxing seating area looking over lush green Galway fields. The area is remote enough to offer a wonderful getaway from the hustle and bustle of life but only a short driving distance from some beautiful scenic areas. Ann was incredibly prompt with her responses to my communications before and during booking. Absolutely no hesitation in recommending Anne’s place or indeed staying there again myself.

Recently awarded 'Most Unique Listing in Ireland' by Airbnb! This cabin is nestled in a tranquil woodland setting, with uninterrupted panoramic views over Lough Derg all the way to the Sliabh Aughty hills in Galway. The cabin is far away from busy roads and street lights and is a haven of birdsong, starry nights and spectacular sunsets with "one of the best views we have ever woken up to". Fully equipped with kitchen, bathroom and lofted bedroom; and is suitable for all seasons.
You have a seperate entrance and car parking facility. We live adjacent to the cabin but it is not overlooked. The cabin was designed and built by Stephen (a master carpenter) who was inspired by the 'Tiny Homes Movement' which advocates living simply on a smaller scale. It is built from locally sourced timber, is fully insulated and has low voltage led lighting; all designed to increase sustainability and minimise the environmental impact. Although small in scale, the cabin contains everything you could need for a perfect holiday experience.
This area is far from the busy tourist trails and is a well-kept secret haven of natural beauty. However, our central location means you are only an hour from the 'Wild Atlantic Way' and less than two hours from Dublin.
  • We loved the spot and the setting. Highly recommended!

    Julian2020-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • Steve and Aine are wonderful hosts. They picked and dropped us in Nenagh city centre as we didn't have our own vehicle. They provided us with all the essentials we asked for and helped quickly. The house itself is so full of amenities that we enjoyed every bit of the "Human nest." Enjoyed the nature at it's best. Birds chirping and the smell of the wet ground and grass was therapeutic and made us feel content. Amazing place to stay. Go for it. ♥️🙂

Our house, originally a convent, is in the village of Woodford, Co. Galway, surrounded by lovely woodland and countryside with beautiful views of Lough Derg. The location is peaceful and perfect for a large family get together. We lovingly refurbished the property in August 2017 for a family wedding. Since opening up our home in August 2017 we have had great reviews which you can read below. We request that people enquiry before booking so that we can understand numbers and event details.
The property was originally a convent and refurbished by our family as a private nursing home in 1990. In 2017, after being unused for 5 years we refurbished the house again, creating a 13 bedroom home, perfect for a family gathering. Over the two top floors we have 11 double bedrooms, 8 of them ensuite, one ensuite twin and one ensuite single room, sleeping 25 in total. Two of the doubles are more of ‘suites’ with bathrooms and separate living areas. Guests have full access to the house including large kitchen and utility kitchen. Large dining rooms with 4 round tables, 2 large sitting rooms, one with TV. We also have clothes washing and drying facilities for guests. The house is situated on 3 acres including large front lawn and orchard. A patio to the side of the house is perfect for a summer barbecue or sitting outside by the fire pit. The house is non smoking and we ask that no candles or flames are lit indoors. The village of woodford is a 5 minute walk away offering the local pubs, food and local shop. The larger town of Portumna is 15 minutes away. Galway city is 1 hour by car. We offer free WiFi. Please do not hesitate to contact if you have any questions. We do ask that all guests contact with party size and event information before booking.
Located on the outskirts of the village of woodford the property is within easy walking distance of the local pubs and shop yet peacefully situated on a hilltop just outside of the village. The town of Portumna is 15 mins away by car offering supermarkets, restaurants etc. Galway city is 1 hour away, a fabulous city full of culture and history.
  • We had a lovely time at this property. It was excellent for our large group with lovely bedrooms, comfortable beds and mostly en-suite bathrooms. There were huge yet cosy lounge areas big enough for us all to socialise together and a lovely big dining table where we could eat as a group. That is no mean feat for 18 people! The hosting was great, really helpful and quick to respond. I’d highly recommend this property if you are looking for somewhere for a large group of people. It was both spacious and comfortable. We had a fabulous week and were made very welcome by both the hosts and the local pub/restaurant ‘J Walsh’

    Nicky2020-02-22T00:00:00Z
  • This was our second stay as we have family in the area and it didn’t disappoint, it’s a great house for entertaining and is really well equipped. Nothing is too much trouble for the hosts and any queries were dealt with immediately. We can’t fault it and will definitely come back for another visit.

  • Beyond our wildest dreams! BarkHill House was the setting for a perfect family vacation in the tidy beautiful town of Woodford. Laura was fabulous with the communication from day one and Cece and Pat were the most friendly hosts that one could ask for. The home is spacious beyond belief with nine bedrooms en suite and four bedrooms sharing two very large full baths. Two enormous living rooms, a massive dining room where all 21 of us dined with plenty of room and another massive kitchen with a dining area. Exterior gardens, a private drive, comfortable outdoor sofas and chairs, a grill, a fire pit, three large picnic table with umbrellas, fruit trees, a shrine to St. Anne, manicured lawns, designer decor, I could go on and on and on. If you are looking for the perfect home for a large gathering, look no further. This is the place! Exquisite grounds full of blooming flowers, peace and quite and star-filled nights! Don't delay, book this place today!

  • We have just returned from a wonderful stay at Barkhill House in the lovely village of Woodford. Laura was great to deal with and her parents on site, Pat and Cecelia, were lovely people, very warm and friendly. The house is full of charm and certainly did not disappoint with respect to the advert. It has all the amenities a large gathering could need, beautiful setting, great rooms with plenty of en-suites and other bathrooms. Tremendous garden with large patio, colourful flower beds, plenty of seating, chiminea, barbeque etc. The location was just right, on the edge of a peaceful village, a short walk from small shops and pubs with lovely food. Also within reach of lots of amenities and attractions. We had a party of eighteen and everyone loved it for our family birthday get together. We look forward to staying here again.

  • We were a group of 17 friends coming together from London and the USA for a long bank holiday weekend. The house, although quite remote, was a wonderful space which perfectly suited our needs. All bedrooms were clean, comfortable, nicely appointed and most had en-suites. The kitchen is fully equipped and the dining room easily seated us all. The owners were incredibly friendly, warm and welcoming. They made the entire process very easy and very relaxing. We would highly recommend you don’t do the Father Ted tour but do stay at this lovely house! Also both Wrens Bar and Walsh’s in the village were great for low key drinks/dinner.

    Will2019-05-27T00:00:00Z
  • Stayed here with a big group of friends plus kids. The bedrooms were perfect, there are a couple that have a sort of 'ante room' at the entry to the bedroom and that was great for the ones with small kids. Garden is fantastic and there's a little suntrap to the side of the house with a bench where we sat in the sun and had meals. Its just a short walk into the village of Woodford and Portumna is a 15min drive away. Could highly recommend taking a trip up the Shannon while you're there!

  • This is such a gem of a find. We have recently moved to Woodford and there are not many places to stay for just one or two guests. So this was perfect for my mother-in-law's visit. Apart from it's convenience for us, it is a lovely place to stay as a base for exploring the area. The annex is comfortable, bright, spacious and spotlessly clean and fresh. There was ample food and drink left for breakfasts. Peaceful and picturesque location. Very welcoming and helpful host in Jo who was always contactable. Will definitely be booking again :)

    Jane Marie2019-11-27T00:00:00Z
  • Nice apartment and good communication with Jo. I can recommend it to anyone.

  • Woodford doesn’t have a great selection of places to stay, this place is a brilliant find and I could not recommend it enough 👍🏻

    Steve2019-05-12T00:00:00Z
  • Jo's place is as described. Very clean, spacious and a great location to be away from everything yet close to some great places to visit. Truly a home away from home with many things provided.

    Prash2019-04-23T00:00:00Z
  • This is an absolutely gorgeous apartment/annex and Jo was so quick to respond to emails. She left us to ourselves and was unobtrusive which was great. And when we arrived she had the lights on and a welcome sign so that we knew exactly where we were going. The accommodation had everything we needed and Jo was kind enough to leave us bread, cereals, milk, tea, coffee, biscuits and even a packet of pancakes! I would absolutely recommend Jo's place and if we get the opportunity we will stay here again.

    Niamh2018-10-28T00:00:00Z
  • Jo’s place is a gem in an area sadly lacking in accommodation options. If your looking for a quiet spot to recharge - you’ve found it.

Everything you need is provided. We were warmly welcomed by Anne. She had turned on the heating and had left us with some delicious scones. Exactly what we needed after a blustery drive down from Dublin. The apartment is situated in a small village a few kilometres from Loughrea. It is about a 1hr drive to Galway. The nearby village of Portumna is lovely and offers gorgeous forest walks, lovely pub food and a water park that would provide a lovely place to relax in Summer. I highly recommend Lynch's. Clonlee Farm Manor....Take a step back in time...1763 was the date on coins we retrieved in the wall of this fully functional home (and Stone Barn) that could have existed for many years prior. Surrounded by stunning panoramic views of lush green paddocks with 200 year old beach trees, your mornings will be inspirational, your afternoon walks on the country roads bursting with nature that will entertain you with the inquisitive animals, and your evening sunsets will make unforgettable memories.
Clonlee Farm Manor offers a peaceful and restful get-away from the everyday hustle and bustle. Rest your bones in the countryside with breathtaking sunrises and sunsets overlooking the rolling hills. Grab your boots and take a stroll through the fields; but be sure to say hello and feel free to bring carrots to our land-keepers Dolly & Cash (our donkeys). Start your morning off with yoga and horseback riding at Sleive Aughty. Follow the trails and explore Kylebrack Woods; home to many beautiful birds. Book a tasting up the road with our local award-winning chocolate factory, Ivy House Chocolates or a tour of Kylemore Farmhouse Cheese. Wash it down with a pint of the finest stout at the local Pub. Venture into Galway City for the Galway Races, shopping, and restaurants. Other activities include: Loughrea Lake (11 km), Galway City (58 km), local grocery store (5 km), Pallas Karting & Paintball (6 km), Shannon Airport (80 km). We found coins in the Clonlee Farm Manor that date back to 1763 so it a fully functional home at that time and no one knows for how long prior. (Included are pictures of the coins) We exposed the the original old beams where the hooks still remain to hang the gun and the salted bacon. We also restored the original interior doors and floorboards. The original flooring were fastened with handmade steel brads (before nails) and the spacing between them increases and decreases depending on the humidity. We included some of the expected creature comforts like; Flat screen smart TV with BOSE sound system (Bluetooth compatible) over the fireplace makes for a cozy evening in. Coffee/Tea, fresh linens, and towels will be provided.
This is a very safe neighborhood, all the neighbors are friendly and helpful. The local pub (The Cross-cut) maintains the old traditional culture. The owner Joe is so friendly and the conversation is free and easy. Ivy House Chocolates are all hand made and approx 1 mile away. Kylemore Farmhouse Cheese is 3 miles away....and both products are world class in quality. Sean O'Donnell owns the local Grocery 3 miles away and the locally baked brown bread and scones are to die for. Loughrea is 7 miles and you will find a beautiful lake, quaint little town, and world-class supermarket. Palas Karting/Paint ball is 3 miles away and Slieve Aughty Horse Riding Center is a unique place to get a wonderful time riding followed up with good food afterwards.

  • The most amazing stay ever! The photos looked great but pixies Penthouse was even more amazing in real life! So spacious and such beautiful decor. Even wee touches like sensor lights which came on as we walked up the old stone steps to the door was just lovely. My wee boy had to come with us at the last minute unplanned and Louise and Claire couldn't have been nicer! They got a wee bed set up for him and even had colouring book and pencils on arrival and a wee kinder egg. Also lovely touch was the crisps and drinks etc. that were left out for us and even tea bags which was just perfect after a 5 hour drive! Honestly the most peaceful, beautiful setting that allowed us to totally escape from any pressures or stress and totally switch off. Was such a beautiful experience! Even that there was no formal check in and we arrived with key under the mat it felt so stress free and easy like a home from home. We didn't use the sauna because of the storm while we were there but had a nosey round the area and it looked beautiful! There also seems to be a wee bbq decking area which would be so lovely in summer. The day we checked out the storm was raging outside and we even got a message to tell us to take our time leaving and helped us find a safe way out while letting us know we could come back and wait for the storm to calm if the roads were too bad! Honestly such a perfect place to stay and such value for money too! Well worth the drive down, we will definitely be back!

You will need your own transport to travel because it is in the countryside, away from the hustle and bustle, thats the main purpose ! We didnt get to meet the host but the check in was really smooth and easy ! The house is equiped with everything and they even prepared a basket full of chocolate and candies just to welcome us !Thankyou for the wonderful stay ! We will be back !!! Xoxo

  • Beautiful penthouse for two. There was anything we needed and if we needed something extra, Louise made it possible. And the sauna was really awesome. Thanks for this wonderful stay.

  • Stayed in pixies penthouse for a couple of nights over New Years - great communication before and during the stay, peaceful location, secure parking and the hot tub was an added bonus!

  • Our stay in pixie's penthouse was lovely. Everything looked so quirky and cosy when we arrived and there was a very convenient set up (enough cooking equipment, a good oven etc). The hot tub was a brilliant addition to our stay. Super comfortable bed, and a great tv and DVD selection. We would highly recommend it.

Set in Ireland's hidden heartlands, a walking distance from Lough Derg and its harbours. A great starting point to tour the West of Ireland, less than an hour from Galway, Limerick and Tipperary.
  • The hole is such an unusual quirky and interesting place... Very cosy and welcoming... We were treated to home made cider on our arrival and loved hearing the story about the hole. It is situated in such a pretty area and after arriving in the dark, we loved waking up to be surrounded by green and enjoyed having our breakfast in the front garden. Thank you so much! Em and Oli

    Iftekhar2019-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • Thoroughly enjoyed my stay in the Hole. The accommodation was spotless and spacious and I wanted for nothing. It is indeed a quaint location with woodland in front and in an area where peace and solitude can easily be found in the place itself and in the nearby roads and lanes. I was reminded of W.B. Yeat's lovely lines while I was here: 'And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow, Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings'. It is situated on the ancient 'auld road' which was once a main thoroughfare between Connaught and Munster. This road has much history associated with it. Valerie and Dave were very attentive hosts throughout my stay and I got a lovely treat of fresh organic eggs from them one morning. Paddy

  • We had a lovely stay here. The house is fun and homely, the garden space is so peaceful and Valerie and Dave could not be more thoughtful as hosts. We had fresh flowers in every room on arrival and Valerie was so helpful with communicating beforehand. Nearby Portna forest park is lovely too

    Jamie2019-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • Caring and caring hosts, a super friendly country setting, secluded, quiet and really pretty, a nice house well equipped and spacious. In short, it was a real pleasure to meet and stay at Valérie and Dave's place.

Spend time in nature. Need a break from the hustle and bustle of city life? then this is the place for you! Sleep in one of my two beautiful hand crafted gypsy wagons, cook on an open fire, explore the woodland trails or relax in the beautiful surroundings. The wagons are nestled on a hillside with lovely forest views adjacent to the Slieve Aughty riding centre and Organic restaurant. Retreat to this peaceful rural location where you can gaze at the night sky and really recharge your batteries.
The beauty of a glamping holiday is that you can enjoy being outdoors in the gorgeous Irish countryside, while having all the comforts of the facilities the Slieve Aughty centre has to offer. The wagons are cute tiny spaces that give you a truly unique experience. There are benches along the side where you can comfortably sit and play games on the pull out table. For the night there's one raised single bed and a additional pull out double bed. Cosy bedding and towels are provided and there's an electric heater for cooler evenings. The shared bathroom a short walk away has two hot showers and two toilets. A traditional cast iron tripod to cook on the open fire is located beside the wagons, however if the weather is misbehaving there is also a shared indoor kitchen nearby. In addition guests are free to use the library room, the art room, kids playground, fairy garden and honesty shop. For an extra charge guests can go horse riding, trail mountain biking, use the hot tub (needs to be booked in advance and not available during extended dry spells) or enjoy a delicious meal in the organic restaurant.
In order to offer people an exciting variety of activities, I'm moving my wagons to my neighbours at the Slieve Aughty centre. This exquisitely decorated collection of buildings on 17 acres of rugged land was originally set up as an equestrian holiday centre by Esther and has gradually expanded to the opening of a 9 bedroom guest house and organic certified restaurant in 2012. Esther's mission is to provide an amazing base for people to stay without having a negative effect on the environment. The centre maintains a lovely laid-back relaxed atmosphere for guests, workers and animals alike. The centre is home to many horses, donkeys, sheep, dog, pig and an alpaca. The animals here are part of the family and are therefore extremely friendly and always happy to get a rub.
  • We had a lovely stay! The place is so cute and clean. Karolina provided us with tips around the area and helped us to get our horse riding booking(which was fantastic!) . There was wood and lighters provided for a nice fire pit, warm blankets and a electric heater. The kitchen had all utensils needed for cooking and easy access to toilets/showers. The farm has lovely dogs and horses around which was a plus to me!

  • What a lovely and unique spot! Karolina’s wagons are very cute and cozy, with a fire pit and chairs and tables. A different and special way of glamping! The Centre has a great organic restaurant where we ate breakfast and dinner after booking with the front desk! Definitely the place for you if you enjoy nature walks and horse riding! Would highly recommend to all who enjoy a unique experience off the beaten track and away from tourists.

Had a breakfast of muesli. fresh fruit, and soda bread with tea. Could have had toast also. I had a kettle in my room with tea coffee and milk and two cakes provided. The broadband was fast and effective. Nice wide hallway and room was on the ground floor. Happily recommend guests book here if they are in the area or as a base to see the local area. The house is in a quaint village and it's worth the short walk to the river where you can sit and just chill. My bed was super comfy and the shower was perfect. I appreciated the late check-out as I'm not an early riser. Maggie is a great host and very kind. Would stay here again for sure!

What we didn't expect from her was lovely home made bread, scones and sausage rolls at breakfast and a lovely touch of a cream egg at breakfast on Easter Sunday! Maggie was full of great info for the surrounding area to help fill our time. Maggie's home was perfectly places for a wedding at Coolbawn Quay which is just under a 10 minute drive away. We would defiantly be back if ever in the area!

  • Great place! The wagon was so cute and comfier than I expected. Beautiful location with horses nearby. Karolina gave us lots of helpful tips of things to do in the area as well. Would definitely recommend staying here!

  • We had a great stay here! The Slieve Aughty centre is beautiful, charming and has great facilities. The bathrooms were very modern and clean and good cooking facilities too (kitchen and outdoor firepit). The wagons are well kept and spotlessly clean. My husband is tall (over 6ft) and although the wagons are small it was comfortable for him sleeping! We appreciated the fire wood being supplied, as well as toiletries, clean towels and lovely comfortable bedding. We especially loved making friends with momo the dog!

  • Staying in the Karolina wagons for two nights was the final culmination of our perfect vacation! The place is amazing and although at first the space seemed too small for three, we finally didn't have any kind of comfort problem !! The equestrian center is impressive and its philosophy too! We 3 are riders and we could appreciate and value the quality of their intalacations! The showers are amazing and were super clean, something to keep in mind since the stay there is camping type! In addition the dog of the horse is super nice ... Because it was very large, if I had not put it in my suitcase! But who stole our hearts completely was Anabelle, Karolina's little daughter! She can't be more beautiful and charming with her 3 years old !! If you want to be his friends you have to bring him cucumbers, which is his favorite food in the world and he let us know about 10 times in 15 minutes! In conclusion, we were happy and our stay was especially short here! A huge kiss from Spain to the whole family, but especially about Karolina and Anabelle !!!

  • If you want to escape reality this is your place. You won't need to bring anything but your wellies and food everything else is provided. The calming space that surrounds the wagons it really brought me back to my childhood walking along roads filled with brambles and berrys. The enchanted woods really brings out the imagination of the kids( they will be filthy and tired). We loved it and can't wait to go back next summer xx

    Lisa2019-08-23T00:00:00Z
  • Nice and clean place. Our 4 year old son loved it and enjoyed the karts, the playground and the horses there. By the way, food at the restaurant was delicious. Its a nice place to go.

    Andrea2019-08-13T00:00:00Z
  • Karolina is a great hostess. The property is located on the grounds of the Slieve Aughty Center (Horse Farm) and is far out of the way. It is recommended to mark the place beforehand on googlemaps. Our sat nav in the Irish car did not know the road. The car was very clean. Towels, water, a small candy, shampoo and a small heater were available in the car. However, the mattresses are not very long. My husband is 1.83 m tall and it was ok for him at the bottom, the upper one is even shorter. Possibly. Karolina before asking about the length. Furthermore, the mattresses are due to the function (fold away) not very thick and if you are a bit heavier you feel something the slatted frame. You can shower and cook on the railing of the Slieve Aughty Center, where there is also a playground, a drawing room and several lounges available (similar to a campsite). Furthermore, in the local organic restaurant, a breakfast (about 10 EUR) and otherwise eaten. Among other things, products from the in-house garden are served. The property is very clean. In the morning you can see the horses galloping on the farm and there also horseback rides, etc. book. It was a great adventure for us and we would come again :-)

Slieve Aughty Centre is truly off the beaten path. Driving down our lane you will still be wondering "am i really going the right way" and then it opens up into a beautiful guest house and gardens. An outdoor enthusiasts dream, we have 17 acres surrounded by neighbouring farms and more than 2,000 acres of state owned forestry. Deer, fox, pine martin, red squirrel, pheasant, bats and lots more frequent the area. The village of Kylebrack is a quaint old farming village. The only shop in the town is within walking distance, where you can buy everything from animal feed to toiletries to sacks of potatoes. There are lots of wonderful sites to visit with a rich history nearby, including the ruins in the forest.
  • The place is beautiful but just find out about the hot tub and amenties and if they are available to use because they weren't ready for us.

On the shore of Lough Derg, 1km from Mountshannon village in East Co.Clare, this detached bungalow is on a quiet cul de sac surrounded by woodland. At the end of the garden there is a small private sandy beach with lake access where guests can bring canoes, kayaks or a lake boat to the shallow waters and mooring on the property. Lough Derg is an excellent water sports location and a world famous fishing destination for brown trout and coarse fishing, particularly renowned for its Mayfly season.
The property is a well used and loved Holiday Home, but you should find everything comfortable, clean and in good working order. The bungalow is on a quiet private cul de sac road, south facing surrounded by grass lawn and pine trees. The entrance leads into an open plan kitchen, dining and seating area which benefits from a picturesque view of Lough Derg with the hills Co.Tipperary in the distance. There is a cozy solid fuel stove in this room which opens onto the outdoor patio. Adjoining the kitchen is a sitting room which also looks out towards the lake through sliding doors onto the patio. The sitting room has an open fireplace and TV. A corridor links the kitchen to the rear of the house, where there are three bedrooms – one double bed, one single plus bunk bed, and one bunk bed. There is a bathroom with wc, sink and bath/shower and there is a separate small wc. There is ample parking on the drive way adjacent to the house. The house is surrounded by grass lawn and then surrounded on three sides by a strip of woodland. The lake garden and lake access is approximately 100metres from the house, (directly across the private lane that services the five other houses on the lane). It is a gently sloping grass & sand beach which is suitable for launching and mooring kayaks, canoes or lakeboats. The water is shallow (2-3ft) for about 50 yards into the lake where it tapers off to 8ft and deeper.
The lake makes this a special location – the view, the constantly changing light and the potential for activity on the water or in the hills and forests nearby. Mounshannon village itself is a very well kept small town with a beautiful park and playground at its centre, a public marina and beach, as well as a small restaurant, two pubs, a pub restaurant and a garage. Killaloe is located 27km to the south and Portumna 27km to the north. Limerick City is about an hour drive, and Dublin Airport about 2.5 hrs. East Clare is dominated by rolling hills and forest as well as the Lake and is an excellent hiking, walking, cycling and boating region. Portumna Forest is a particularly well laid out and maintained park with many extensive walking and cycling routes.
  • Beautiful location, very cozy house by the lake with amazing view. Loved the big windows!

  • Great stay at this wonderful cottage / lodge with amazing views of the lake. Craig's comms we amazing and he had made sure our stay was wonderful throughout. Small note, we used WAZE as our SatNav and that didn't find the lane but using Google Maps resolved the issue.

  • Craig was a wonderful host. His home is situated in a beautiful spot on a lake. It's clean, spacious and fully equipped with all you need. We really enjoyed our stay and would have no problem recommending it - we might even go back ourselves one day!

    Angela2019-12-15T00:00:00Z
  • Craig’s place is on this wonderful hidden spot on the lake. We had lovely walks and the fire place is inviting to sit in the evening with a glass of wine or a lovely cup of tea. The kitchen has everything you need! What wonderful meals we created - just like at home. The mount Shannon Saturday market was wonderful to visit and further on there are lovely walks along the East Clare way... Even it wasn’t the season for the boats or Kajaks to get out on the lake to be close to the water created a lovely and calming atmosphere. I didn’t meet Craig but everything was clear and very well described. Thanks

  • This was a wonderful place to stay if you want a nice relaxing getaway in farmland. It was very cold if the heaters weren’t turned on, keep in mind you’ll be spending around 8-12 euro a day using the electricity meter that controls the stovetop, lights, energy and heaters. Make sure you get a clear description of how to put the coins in, or else they might be eaten! However, the hosts were wonderful and are always around to help with whatever you need. Beds were comfortable and the place was very clean. Sean and Rosaleen were fantastic hosts and always wanted to help with whatever they could help with. We were so grateful to have met these two! Place was easy to find on google maps and perfect if you want to take a day drip in any direction. Portumna was about a 10 minute drive with an ALDI and an awesome castle! Overall, it was a wonderful stay. It is cold in March, however the place heats up well. Make sure to be prepared to use the meter that only takes 2 euro coins. We will definitely be back!

  • This is a really lovely little farm in the middle of nowhere ;-) If you are looking for some quiet place amid the beautiful landscape in the very heard of Ireland, this is definitly THE spot. Perfect for daytrips in every direction. Ideal for families with children, lots of space for playing ball and green meadows for running around. Our small one instandly fell in love with the little white dog, while the big one really loved the three horses on the farm. Sean and Rosaleen were entirely helpful in giving us tipps for places of interest, playgrounds, etc... We were even allowed to pick up some vegetables from the small herb garden. So overall we totally recommend that little pearl of an accommodation to everyone who wants to explore the Emerald Isle or just need some really nice place to relax!

  • Connie’s house is amazing. We loved sitting in the conservatory and taking in the view of the lake. We did not want to leave. The house is in a perfect location for day tripping. We were supremely happy with our stay.

This cottage is beautifully decorated in modern bohemian styles. It’s light, bright and airy. South facing. On a quiet country lane. It was built in the mid 18th century. The cottage is not suitable for children or elderly persons because it’s got ladders into both bedrooms with no handrails. It’s perfect for a group of friends or a couple. Dogs are welcome. Fire wood and turf is provided. You can also make use of a small salad and herb garden. Looking forward to meeting you! Merel.
The Hill Bar a traditional Irish pub is a 10 minute walk away. Slieve Aughty Centre is a 5 minute drive away and offers a cafe, restaurant and horse riding.
  • The perfect quiet retreat away in a gorgeous cottage. Couldn’t have asked for more. Great location, great communication and dog friendly. Would most definitely recommend if you are looking for a weekend break with a variety of walks at your doorstep.

  • If you want a retreat away from it all, this is the place! It’s a really cosy quirky little cottage. Perfect place to relax and enjoy the sun in the garden and the cosy nights by the fire. Perfect little cottage. Would definitely recommend and stay again.

  • This little cottage is just like the pictures - cosy, clean and cute! Enjoyed our stay, especially eating out in the beautiful garden and getting to know next doors friendly doggie!

  • Stunning, quirky cottage with everything you need for a retreat from the busy city. So much to see and do around the area and the host was welcoming and friendly with many local tips!

    Lachlan2019-09-08T00:00:00Z
  • Merel's place is very cute and worth every penny (if you don't mind country living)! Both bedroom spaces are only accessible by ladder, so that is something to consider. Overall we had a wonderful stay

    Liza2019-08-24T00:00:00Z
  • Such a cute cottage, it’s lovely! You must be able to climb to your bed buts that’s a part of the charm

    Jouke2019-08-17T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely little cottage. The town of Loughrea is about a 10 minute drive away. It was fun having a fire in the cottage and it was easy enough to light. The cooking facilities were great and we could cook dinner easily. A funky and quirky little place to stay with a local pub 5 minute walk away

Time travel does exist! Five hundred years old, ten years in the making and now you can stay the night! Imagine being transported back through five centuries and having a unique, romantic "overknighter" in The Great Hall of our authentic 16th century Irish castle. A sanctuary from the modern world, The Black Castle is nestled amongst the beautiful rolling hills of North Tipperary (it's not such a long way!) with stunning Lough Derg, and all that it has to offer, on our doorstep
UPDATE Winter is going ;-) and most of our available overknighters for 2020 have now been booked. Please see our availability calendar for the last remaining dates. An "overknighter" in The Great Hall is the closest you can come to experience living in the 16th century....a rustic retreat for history and nature lovers, artists or anyone looking to totally disconnect from the 21st century. Our location is rural so if you're looking for bright lights, big city this may not be the place for you but if you like bright stars and big skies and being surrounded by nature.... Built by the O'Kennedys in the 1500's, The Black Castle's rugged realm is surrounded by fields, forestry and ancient woods and bordered by a crystal-clear stream. Access is via its own private road, with no passing traffic, just off The Lough Derg Scenic Drive. You will be staying in our authentically furnished Great Hall, sleeping in our beautiful, bespoke King size bed... fit for royalty with finest quality bedding, Egyptian cotton sheets, luxurious duvet and pillows. Our quest is to offer you the most unique, authentic castle experience possible and to recreate the atmosphere of what it would be like to immerse yourself in the 16th century. This means there are all the mod-cons one would expect 500 years ago.... ie there is NO modern heating (except the magnificent open fireplace and hot water bottles). There is NO TV, NO CD/DVD player and with very limited internet connection...gasp, NO WiFi. It's the perfect opportunity to take a break from the constant intrusions of modern life. For relaxation and entertainment there are books to browse and games provided including replica 18th century playing cards, Backgammon, a delightful Lewis Chess set and a Fidchell (Celtic chess) set. There is NO ELECTRICITY whatsoever in The Great Hall, only the warm glow of candlelight and firelight (we provide abundant candles and fuel). Don't panic though! An Overknighter at The Black Castle doesn't mean you have to go completely back to The Dark Ages as THERE IS ELECTRICITY in the "kitchenette" (a room below The Great Hall). Here you'll find a mini fridge/freezer, an electric kettle, a DeLonghi coffee machine with a variety of Nespresso coffees, two induction cooking rings, a Smeg toaster and a Belfast sink with hot and cold running water. A Continental style breakfast is provided which includes speciality teas, quality coffee, rustic bread, cereals, yogurts, juice, fruit and local produce (where possible). Tomatoes, mushrooms, eggs, potato farls and bacon are also provided if you would like to cook yourself a hot breakfast. A welcome hamper, with a sweet treat or two, is also provided. You can recharge your phone, tablet etc in the kitchenette. The Great Hall is on the second floor and the only access is by our 16th century stone spiral staircase which means that the Black Castle may unfortunately not be suitable for those who have restricted mobility. NB: Authentically in keeping with the 16th century ;-) there is NO SHOWER or BATH at the castle. The "BATHROOM" consists of an eco-friendly DRY TOILET (composting toilet/"gardaloo"© Cody Long ;-) thank you!) Natural, handmade soap and hand towels are provided. We are doing as much as we can to minimise our carbon footprint/ environmental impact (and preserve the 16th century atmosphere) so there are no fluffy dressing gowns or single-use slippers provided. We have also kept any "landscaping" to a minimum in an effort to support the local wildlife #beefriendlyairbeenbee The castle will be EXCLUSIVELY YOUR SPACE during your stay. We are on site, only a minute or two away in case you need us for anything, but out of sight during your visit. Not only is the castle exclusively yours during your overknighter, venture outside and there's 13 rugged acres for you to explore too. Next to the campfire, there’s rustic seating for dining al fresco if the weather is fine. We are slowly restoring The Black Castle but The Great Hall is now complete. By choosing to stay here you will become entwined in the castle's history (and its future!) as any "profit" we make from your overknighter goes straight back into the restoration, meaning you're helping The Black Castle "earn its keep", enabling it to stand proud for another 500 years. Speaking of 500 years, this is an ancient building, not built for modern standards/sensibilities so please bear this in mind. The Black Castle is approximately an hour’s drive north east of Shannon International airport, via the M7 motorway, 2 hours via the M50/M7 motorway from Dublin/Dublin International airport. It's roughly a ten to fifteen min drive to the popular lakeside villages of Dromineer and Terryglass, and fifteen min drive south to Nenagh town (recently named "Ireland's second friendliest place"). The pretty village of Puckaun is about 5 min away and has a grocery shop and two pubs. Unfortunately, there is no public transport in the area so you will require your own mode of transport. We want you to have an unforgettable experience (in the best way) at The Black Castle so if you’re the adventurous type who is looking for something unique and can happily survive without some 21st Century comforts for one or two nights then this might just be the place for you. Any questions about your stay, please feel free to ask me. This really is a beautiful area, with lots of accommodation and eating options, and if you would like to spend more time exploring it before or after your overknighter at The Black Castle we would be happy to provide more information and suggestions.
Beautiful Lough Derg is just up the road with sailing, fishing and other water sports on offer. Our rural location and dark skies means great stargazing too!
  • I knew this experience was going to be special, but I couldn’t have imagined just how special. Sonja was so communicative and helpful (and patient!), and when I arrived I walked into the magical space to find candles lit, a sweet note, and everything just beyond perfect. She went over and above what was expected. The bed was the best I have slept in in two trips to Ireland....felt like a queen! It’s impossible to convey how it feels to stay in this magical space - but I didn’t want to leave, and I can’t wait to come back!

    Suzanne2019-12-02T00:00:00Z
  • If I could give this experience 10 stars I would. It’s hard to express how special being in this place is... all the history, combined with all the obvious labors of love that Sonja and Kevin have put into it in order to provide a once in a lifetime experience for the rest of us is just mind boggling. I keep pinching myself - and I’ve done a lot of traveling in my time. I am so grateful, and Sonja has been amazing (and then some) from start to finish. INCREDIBLE!!!

    Suzanne2019-12-01T00:00:00Z
  • This is one of the great experiences on offer anywhere. Having done a lot of outrageous adventures, this is right at the top. An absolutely stunning renovation of a 16th century tower, the physical space is matched by the wonderful hospitality of Sonja, Kevin , and Tilly. You will never forget your stay at the Black Castle. Please, do yourself a favour and visit. Honestly one of world's great places, with some of the world's best hosts. Incredible.

    Roland2019-10-29T00:00:00Z
  • Idyllic setting. You are transported back in time with a lovingly resorted home. The friendly welcome of our host makes this fantastic getaway well worth the trip.

    Aldrin2019-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • This place....this place is breathtaking. There aren't enough positive adjectives in the English language that I can leave here. Words just don't do it justice. The castle is amazing - majestic. Kevin and Sonja put so much love into restoring a relic, and you can feel the spirit of it throughout the building. Not only was the castle and its amenities incredible - Kevin and Sonja were incredible people. They were amazing hosts that my partner and I now consider friends. Their hospitality is unmatched. I don't want to go through and explain every personal touch they left for us - I'd rather the traveler be surprised. I can't recommend this place enough. Amazing, amazing experience.

    Brandon2019-10-21T00:00:00Z
  • A truly magical experience! When you walk through the doors of the black castle you step back 500 years in time. The hosts have perfected every detail on the furnishings and interior to make your stay amazing! Best of all is they are the friendliest most hospitable people you will meet. This was the best night of our honeymoon trip, like a medieval fairy tale come true. It is an experience we will never forget. If you are looking for a unique and authentic castle experience this is a must on your list!

    Gina2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • Wow. Awesome. Incredible. These words can't even describe the entire experience Sonja and Kevin and Tilly provide. This was by far the highlight of our 9 day trip. Absolutely fantastic!

    William2019-09-29T00:00:00Z
  • Truly a fairytale castle with all the beautiful perks and Kevin & Sonja made sure to make us feel extra special for our upcoming wedding. Absolutely, surreal place to stay!

  • Cottage full of charm, simple and warm, just like the reception of Teresa and her husband. . The pub next door is authentic and does not cause any nuisance. Ideal location for visiting the Burren, Galway and Connemara .Advantage: Dogs are welcome and the nearby forest allows for many walks. Excellent value for money.

  • Lovely cosy cottage. Extremely friendly hosts.

  • We love our stay in this charming traditional cottage. It is located in a perfect location in the countryside and is within a short driving distance to Galway. It has a modern kitchen that is very well-equipped. We enjoy spending the nights sitting in front of the fireplace. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

  • Teresa's place was our last stop on a 3-part tour of Ireland. It was conveniently located and the perfect place to relax and explore a few more places before we headed home. The woods across the street were beautiful, we found castle ruins to explore within an easy drive and then the Hill Bar right next door to have a last pint and get our remaining questions about Ireland answered! If we had been more adventurous we could have easily taken a trip to the Cliffs of Mohr and Bunratty Castle. There was plenty of room for the 5 of us, the fire was lovely, the cottage sweet, the pub welcoming and we felt right at home. Thank you!

    Cynthia2019-06-17T00:00:00Z
  • This home was just what my husband ordered. A little slice of rustic charm in the Irish country side. I'll be the first to admit it was a little more rustic than I normally go for but by the second day even I was on board and enjoyed my stay thoroughly. Communication was easy and the hosts lovely, checking in with us to make sure all was good and responding quickly to the one problem we had. Be aware the only heating source in the main living area is by peat / turf fireplace. This was fine (once i took over and started the fire each night as my husband failed that part of cub scouts lol)

    Gloria2019-05-29T00:00:00Z
  • Teresa's place was great. We spent two lowely nights with kids in this cosy place. Hose is clean and tidy. We enjoed our weekend. Highly recomended for quet and piecefull stay.

My place is close to nature! We are 10 km away from the nearest town (Loughrea) and about 45 minutes from Galway City. You’ll love my place because of the views, the location, the people, the ambiance, and the outdoors space. My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, families (with kids), big groups, and furry friends (pets).
A glamping cabin, nestled between Poplar trees and the outdoor hot tub (available to rent at an additional cost). The cabin is an A frame with a sitting area, small bathroom and sink downstairs and a double bedroom in the loft with large windows. It is cute and quirky and unique. Other glamping on the property includes a hut next to the playground, or a tipi in the orchard. Please note that this listing is for B&B only. Free parking is included but all other services are subject to advanced booking and fees.
  • Esther's place was clean, comfortable, and exactly what we needed to attend a friend's wedding at the Slieve Aughty center. Pictures are very accurate to the space. Perks include an active reception desk at the center where you can ask questions as you need, and a really yummy breakfast that's included in the stay! All in all, we were very happy with our experience.

My place is an eco-resort, and my goal is for you to experience nature and relax. The centre encompasses 17 acres, with an organic garden and restaurant, equestrian centre, Enchanted Forest and more than 2,000 acres of state owned forestry bordering the property to explore by bicycle, on foot, or on horseback. For something different, hire a donkey and packs and go hiking with a picnic, and in the evening sit by the fire and enjoy the night sky or hire the outdoor hot tub for a private soak.
The Playground hut is beside the small playground and pet field and has a hand made bunk bed with a double bed on the bottom and single on top - perfect for a couple or family of 3. There is a table and chair and wall cupboards. The hut has electricity and a wood burning stove. Toilets, showers, and kitchen facilities are just steps away and are shared with other campers. Access to all the children's activities and walking/cycling routes are included for all our guests. Bed linens, towels and a continental organic breakfast is also included in your stay. Horse and pony trekking, the hot tub, and donkey hire is additional costs. Lunch and dinner can also be purchased on site from The Three Towers Organic Kitchen.
With forestry on 3 sides, we are remote and wild. It is not unusual to go for a walk in the morning or evening and see deer, pheasant, fox, pine marten, red squirrel and lots of birds, including the endangered hen harrier. The Enchanted Forest is a delight for young and old and brings the world of the fairies to life for all, and children receive a pack with a wishing tree hanger, pencil, fairy dust, and keepsake guide to the Enchanted Forest. Resident farm animals include lots of horses and ponies, donkeys, an alpaca, 2 sheep, and Eileen the pot-bellied pig. Our centre is certified silver by Ecotourism Ireland for our sustainable practices, eco-friendly building, and low impact activities. We ask all of our guests to think about their environmental impact when with us and to please recycle, avoid disposable water bottles (we'll give you a Slieve Aughty Centre one you can refill and take home with you), and re-use your towels.
