Places to stay in Walmer
Enjoy peace and quiet in self-contained and comfortable accommodation attached to historic building in bush setting. Attractive, air-conditioned large room which includes a kitchenette. Private bathroom and verandah. 15 mins to Castlemaine & Maldon.
The retreat is an attractive addition to 1870s hand-made brick school which I have transformed into a home where I have lived for 25 years. The place is surrounded on three sides by a beautiful bushland reserve and to the west there are views of Mount Tarrangower and the Nuggety Range.
A bush reserve surrounds the property. I am happy to take guests on a 20 - 30 minute morning walk around this reserve if arranged the day before.
  • Cosy, comfortable and clean. This lovely little cottage on acres is a wonderful getaway. Castlemaine is easy driving distance and when I was done there, the cottage was perfect for chillaxing with book, tv, glass of wine. Thanks for all your local knowledge Bronwyn.

  • This studio is in a lovely and quiet location, surrounded by beautiful bushland. It is also only a 5min drive to Castlemaine. The place is incredibly clean and well furnished. The bed is very comfortable. Bronwyn is a fantastic host, easy and lovely to have a chat to. Would recommend this place to friends.

  • The perfect little spot for what we needed. Lovely, pleasant and easy. An especially beautiful outlook from windows, quiet and restful. We had simple amenities, sufficient to prepare meals and to be perfectly comfortable. Appreciated the art work on the walls, brought a soothing beauty. Thank you Bronwyn for providing the needed retreat.

  • Bronwyn has made a lovely space for accomodation. It’s in a beautiful setting, with the opportunity to walk the bush tracks. It’s close to Castlemaine which offers a variety of options for food, drink and entertainment. Overall a very enjoyable time.

    Christian2019-12-31T00:00:00Z
  • It is such a peaceful place in the middle of gum trees. It is well equipped and just enough to cook for 2 people. There is a nice track for a pleasant nature walk through the gum trees which you can spot lots of different birds, kangaroos and if lucky an echidna too! Bronwyn is a very friendly host. It was very nice of her that she offered to accompany me during the walk. It is ideal for people looking for some quiet time. It is a bonus to be just 10 mins drive from Castlemaine.

    Jodie2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • Helen and Randall always make a special effort to provide fresh and unusually generous supplies which is terrific. Roses from the garden, a friendly dog and complete privacy and comfort. A refreshing original and contemporary style and best value we’ve found in Castlemaine.

    Alison2020-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • Spent two fabulous nights at Randall and Helen’s studio. It was a wonderful surprise as we are newbies to Air BnB. The studio was spacious, well-appointed and clean...a real home away from home for us. Randall and Helen were super easy to communicate with and very approachable when advice when required. They were especially helpful when we had a car and health hiccup during our stay.

    Meredeth2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • Thank you for the awesome stay. Both Randall and Helen asked many times if everything was all good and if I needed anything else. Always provided anything I needed. Great communication. Very clean, happy to come in a clean once a week ( as I stayed for a month) would recommend to anyone!

You’ll love the morning views when you wake up, and in the evening isn’t forget to enjoy a bit of stargazing:) Hosts are super friendly and will accommodate to your needs and schedule, the room was awesome for our needs, located in a separate section of the house which gives you plenty of privacy. You’ll have a separate entrance to your area and the place was sparkling clean. 10/10 would recommend!!!

  • Had the best stay in the beautiful Pink House!

    Jasmine2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • Great little cottage. Super charming and well furnished. We loved the garden. Also very comfy bed! The only thing - which is not Bonnie's fault at all - is the bedroom window backs onto the beer garden of the pub next door, which didn't have loud music or anything, just some laughs and conversations.

    Niama2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • Bonnie's place is in a great location in Castlemaine. As some of the other reviewers have said, it's location right next door to the Bridge Hotel pub means that when a band is playing it is very loud in the house, but as we stayed on a Sunday night the band finished at 5.30pm so this was not an issue for us - a Friday or Saturday might be different though! The cottage is so cute and charming, and in an absolutely cracking location for vintage shopping and a walk around the botanic gardens (just down the street!), and one of the best pub meals we've ever had at the Bridge Hotel next door! We would definitely say here again!

  • We had a wonderful stay at the Dairy. It was close to the Main Street and nearby attractions. The fireplace and kitchen made it a lovely place for a cosy night in. We’ll be back!

  • What a lovely stay at The Castlemaine Dairy. A self contained cottage perfect for 2 people within walking distance of all the places you would want to see and eat at in town. The inside is beautifully fitted out and clean as a whistle. We also arrived to a warm fire which was a thoughtful touch. Would recommend for a great weekend away from the city.

  • A wonderful little place in Maldon! In a beautiful, quiet area at the edge of town, how else do you get to see kangaroos every evening? The cabin is spacious, really well set up and very comfortable. Plenty of seating, good bed and shower, plus outside seating and bbq too. Taofi communicated really well, it was easy to find and self check in. Nothing negative about this place at all! Highly recommended!

  • A great place to stay in Maldon. The one room cottage is spacious and decorated very tastefully with everything needed to be comfortable. The 'added extras' were much appreciated. It was also sparkling clean. Although the wet weather prevented us from sitting outside on the front porch this would be a lovely spot on a warm and sunny day. We found the accommodation exceeded out expections from the pictures and would recommend it. Thankyou Taofi.

    Robyn2019-11-04T00:00:00Z
  • This place was absolutely beautiful in a bush, quiet setting. The pictures of the property were exactly how it was, place was super clean, great modern bathroom, nice heating, Tim tams on arrival for a nice finishing touch!. Taofi was a delight to deal with, very helpful and hospitable. Would love to revisit in summer and utilise the bbq while listening to the world go by. Thanks again!

Nestled in the Harcourt hills, this studio apartment is perfect for a weekend retreat or country getaway. The studio is set back from the main property, adjacent to the open paddocks of this rural setting. Less than 10 minutes from Castlemaine and a short drive to the mountain bike track, vineyards, orchards and walks, Victoria’s apple capital makes for an idyllic escape. Dine on a seasonal breakfast and choose to either enjoy your seclusion or have a cuppa or meal with the friendly hosts.
The space is a newly renovated studio, complete with small kitchenette (coffees/teas/toast), cosy queen bed and gorgeous outlook. There’s a fold out couch for another double bed option. Relax outside under the veranda, or stroll around the nearby paddocks (we’re on an acre block, but back onto neighbouring pasture). The studio is part of a small regenerative property project. We’re re-planting trees, growing veggies, nurturing chickens and reviving the nearby creek.
The Harcourt valley is Victoria’s apple growing center. Explore the fruit orchards, enjoy wine tasting and lunch at premier vineyards, relax on scenic Mt Alexander or picnic at Harcourt’s Oak Forest. For more adventure, Harcourt’s new La Larr Ba Guawa mountain bike park has some of the best trails in the state and is a short ride from the property. Historic Castlemaine is 10 minutes down the road. Enjoy the food, galleries and parks of Victoria’s gold country.

  • Maggie's place is off the beaten track, which is exactly what we were after! The cottage was super cute with views out to the bush (where we watched tiny birds flitting about, and saw kangaroos hopping past!). Maggie is a wonderful host. Communication was a breeze and she was there to let us in and show us around, as well as to share some amazing treats with us! Baked good, chocolates, berries, nibbly things and sparkles... it was all delicious and very much appreciated. The cottage is very well appointed lots of places to sit, a fire, magazines, books and Scrabble! The kitchen was well stocked... so much tea and coffee, all the things you need for breakfast. The bed was super comfy with quality sheets and pillows. Thank you Maggie, it was a perfect weekend escape from Melbourne (and children!!).

The house is a large split-level sustainable mudbrick building. It has polished floorboards and tile floors throughout and lots and lots of light. There are four bedrooms, three of which have open fireplaces. A fourth fireplace warms the large lounge room. There are two big bay windows- one in the lounge and another in the large bedroom. The house has a fully equiped kitchen with fridge and stove; a bathroom with toilet and shower and several paved verandahs and patios.
  • Brett and Liz's house is a wonderfully peaceful and aesthetic environment to recharge as a family. Our young boys especially enjoyed walking to the creek and a nighttime adventure looking for nocturnal animals, and there are some engaging toys and games for preschool aged kids at the house. It was a thrill to spot wallabies and many birds. Highly recommend - we look forward to going back!

    Kath2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • We felt so rejuvenated and relaxed after just a couple of nights at Chinaman Creek House. With no internet access and fires to keep us warm it was such a lovely slow pace... one that allowed us to see lizards, an echidna, kangaroos and so many birds. The mud brick home is a really special place - totally powered by solar - full of books and games - and with a full kitchen for cooking. Our favourite place was lounging on the red couches in the bay window reading. Thanks Brett and Liz - we hope to be back!

  • What a stunning stay! The attention to detail in this stable is near perfection, from the designer bed sheets to the literal kitchen sink and everything in between. We struggled to leave this place and have already made plans to return. We noted that the property would be comfortable to stay in all year around, we are especially looking forward to returning in winter to get cozy around the fireplace. We would reccomend to anyone looking for the perfect romantic getaway, no matter how high your standards, this stay is sure to impress!

    Michael2019-12-23T00:00:00Z
  • We had such a lovely weekend. Very comfortable, kitchen was pretty, clean and had sharp knives and some scissors that came in handy and I didn’t have to search. Bathroom was also clean and lovely. Bed was great! Very not suitable for small children but for a couple it was perfect. We walked to a very delicious cafe on Sunday morning. It was very close to the wedding venue we were attending as well! The property was beautiful, Anna’s parents are delightful. All in all, no complaints, would recommend!

    Eloise2019-12-09T00:00:00Z
  • It's beautiful accommodation in historic Castlemaine. The stable is a magical space with the high picture window above the kitchen area framing an Australian scene worthy of a Tom Robert's masterpiece. I was so comfortable and at ease in this sensitively restored former stable I really didnt want to leave. An easy walk through the lovely botanic gardens to The Mill with its multiple artisan, vintage and foodie precincts including excellent coffee shop, brewery, and fabulous bakery. Also enjoyed delicious meals at Naam Pla Thai in Hargraves St and North Kitchen in Barker St both only 5 minutes drive away. Too many fabulous galleries and vintage shops to visit in one weekend. Am already planning my next stay.

  • Daniel and Glenny have put a lot of love into their beautiful Red Brick Barn which makes it a very special place to stay and somewhere I look forward to returning to.

    Mark2020-03-11T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay at Red Brick Barn was absolutely perfect. The barn itself is one of a kind and has been presented beautifully. Our stay was incredibly relaxing with the use of the outdoor bath, comfortable bed and a private unique outdoor area that looks out over farmland and Bush. We can’t recommend this air bnb enough!

    Amelia2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • From the moment we pulled in to the driveway of the red brick barn we were enchanted by the beauty of the place, the tranquility of the location and once inside blown away by how thoughtfully and beautifully styled the house was. It was as if we'd been transported to the French country-side or the pages of a vogue-living magazine! We loved the spacious, light-filled upstairs bedroom and bathroom and have never slept so well- what a comfy bed!! Of course we utilised the outdoor bath and shower which are privately nestled between the olive trees and overlooking the property's back paddocks (home to two friendly Donkey's, some sheep and a handful of ducks.) Hands down the most beautiful and relaxing accomodation we've ever stayed in. Thank you Daniel and Glenny for creating such a stunning space and allowing it to feel like our home for a weekend. We will definitely be recommending it to all our friends and family and have already planned our return!

    Dale2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • A stunning secluded and relaxing ‘France meets Australia’ retreat. A sheer delight to shower outdoors under the stars or sip champagne while sitting in the bath outside in the morning (indoor bathrooms too). Daniel & Glenny have thought of everything - from the layout, to the design, to the amenities and thoughtful touches, to the large relaxed spaces. Super quiet space - except for the delightful chorus of frogs each night. Nirvana!

    Peter2020-01-03T00:00:00Z
  • An incredible place! The property has been impeccably put together and run. Every detail has been thought of with nothing amiss. It was such a comfortable stay and ultra relaxing. The framed view from the couches to the manicured gardens, and green acreage, was beautiful to sit and look at all day long. Luxury touches like French linens and bath products made the extra special. The outdoor bath was a delightful touch and definitely something to do whilst you are there. We had plans to venture out into local areas but the house so beautiful we ended up staying in the whole time! By far one of the best AirBnB homes we have experienced over the many years and countries and we’ve been to. A very very special place.

  • A great space with a feeling of being in the bush while still in the township. Lovely red theme running through the entire space. Very comfortable and easy to feel at home. And wonderful breakfasts left for those staying from fresh bread, cereal and mushrooms, bacon and eggs (duck and hens) all left in the fridge. Highly recommended.

  • Ima’s place is beautiful and so is her hospitality. Stylish and modern with nice touches of luxury. I especially enjoyed waking gradually from dawn and watching the changing colors of the landscape though the many windows facing different directions.

  • Ima's listing is a stylish, affordable and impeccably clean place. Lots of little considerations, breakfast is lovely and feeding the ponies patting cute dogs were a little bonus. Would recommend.

  • Ima’s place was so lovely. Lots of extras that we didn’t expect. Ima was a great host, giving us some tips of Castlemaine for our stay. The house had a lovely relaxing feel, wish we had of been staying longer.

Nestled on the outskirts of Maldon in the old gold-mining valley lies my childhood home; if peace & tranquillity is what your looking for my mud-brick house ticks all the boxes. Offering two acres surrounded by native bush, off a gravel road, with no traffic to speak of, you will have unparalleled privacy and open space. The place backs directly onto a state forest, you will have no disruptions other than the plethora of natural wildlife that calls itself home in and around our property.
Our house was built in the 1980's with a mixture of handmade mud-bricks, all second hand timbers & environmentally friendly materials. For the kids: 2 sets of footy goals 30 metres long, table tennis table, totem tennis, cricket gear, small portable soccer goals, baseball, bocce, you name it, we've got it! We have a huge collection of old board games easily over 100+ for both the kids and adults. Pets welcome, but be aware there are no fences, they must be restrained if they wander as sheep are close by. We have a stretcher and an additional mattress if you require more than four people staying, we just need to be notified first. We have a barrel for outside fires along with camping chairs, just be aware of the total fire ban days and do it in a safe manner. We have a two person hammock located between two trees on the property also. Internet should be ready from November 16th onwards, until then reception is perfectly fine so you will be able to get any work done/still take calls if need be.
Maldon is historically and architecturally significant as a remarkably intact gold-rush era town. Originally, Maldon was surveyed in 1854, following the Tarrengower gold-rush of 1853. Seventeen separate reefs were discovered in the immediate area, and in the following five years the population reached 20,000, with possibly 2000 Chinese. The town had over 400 buildings including 20 hotels. By the time mining ceased in 1926, more than 12 million pounds worth of gold had been produced from the numerous mines surrounding the township. Maldon boasts that it is largely unchanged since the 1850s, and has attracted considerable interest from tourists for its 19th-century atmosphere. Maldon is also historically and socially significant as the first entire town in Australia to be declared 'historic', and worthy of preservation.
  • This place was so delightful. Cuter and more authentic than the photos suggest. It's rustic and simple, but full of charm and warmth.

    Rachael2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • This gem in the bush is a delightful place to stay. Lots of bird life and other animal residents. I took both my dogs with me and they enjoyed it too its a great place for pets. So many indoor and outdoor activities for children and adults. Great walking trails and scenery. I was able to relax almost immediately. The orchestra of subtle bush noises is a real blessing for one’s inner peace. I will be back. Thank you.

    Jenni2020-01-06T00:00:00Z
  • Staying here is like stepping back in time to when life was simple and its just you, the wildlife and the stars. We had a great time walking through bushland, chilling on the patio and hammock, and playing the nostalgic boardgames from our childhoods. Just a note that this really is rustic so if you dont think youll be comfortable sharing your space with a few critters it may not be for you. It was a perfect place to switch off and it felt like we were hundreds of kilometres away from Melbourne.

    Alice2019-12-30T00:00:00Z
  • Great place for a getaway from the city :) Thanks Sam

    Patrick2019-12-25T00:00:00Z
  • This was the perfect house and location for taking some time out of our busy city lifestyles. Stepping inside, we were met with a feeling of warmth. It is clear that this house has a lot of special memories and the host has made sure his guests feel that as well. For dinner we went to the Maldon Pub, and got a meal in the historical town centre. The rest of the night was spent polishing off a bottle of wine whilst doing a puzzle in front of the fireplace. We are very thankful to Sam for offering such a great experience, it was a nice change to be able to bring our dog along as well. His house has a lot of charm and character and we are looking forward to our next trip to Maldon. Thanks Sam!

  • TRANSPARENT REVIEW: Prior to this trip we were just craving a little R&R. Perhaps it was a little too much phone time/ work or not enough nature. Any-who, we weren’t quite sure what we needed but we knew that we needed to go somewhere. We’ve been to Daylesford before and appreciated its proximity to Melbourne, and don’t get me wrong, we like Daylesford... but we were looking for something a little less “expected” and a bit more holistic. The price was significantly more respectful than other properties, and we made the leap to check it out. Driving through the town we were already kind of taken by how quirky it was (There’s a really awesome little French bakery with great pastries and croissants but get there early for those). We walked through the town and stopped at IGA to grab some stuff for the house. As you might already know and expect, it’s pack in, pack out. Because of the house’s proximity to dense nature you’ll want to bring all your food items since the previous person staying there must take everything with them because of the possibility of little friendly bush mice if not (so that means olive oil, salt etc.). We actually cooked at home every night, and bought a ton of cheese from the French bakery for the last night. Upon driving up, I probably didn’t appreciate the house as much as I did after spending 30 minutes inside of it. But note- this is a home that people grew up in. It has heart n soul and history. It’s what made us fall in love with it. That and the fire. It was quite chilly weather when we were there so it made it so incredibly cozy to get to have a fire in the living room. We took lots of pics and even threw a beautiful video together from the experience. After we left (though we were sad to) we stopped through castlemaine to the hardware shop and bought a fishing rod/ bate and spent a few hours at a really special lake close by. All that to say- the house was exactly what we needed. We came back to Melbourne “whole” compared to how we were when we left the city.... goes without saying we’re going to return to this special little place in Maldon. :) Thank you Sam!

We rate it as the best accommodation we have stayed in, ever ! The actual property is spectacular, both inside & out. Jackie & David were wonderful hosts, and they have thought of everything for the property with so much more than expected re food, kitchen & bathroom supplies, and all the extra little touches re fire set to go, music on & available for the stay & so much more. Also set in a lovely country location, while still so close to town you can ride the bikes they provide. Thanks so much.

Maldon is a town steeped in history. The National Trust declared it Australia's first Notable Town in 1966. It once had quartz reefs that were among the world's richest, attracting a population which built grand houses and a very busy commercial centre. Maldon (Population 1,500) is located 135km northwest of Melbourne in the heart of the Victorian Goldfields. The town is nestled on the slopes of Mt. Tarrangower in an agricultural, pastoral and mining district. It has retained an authentic pioneer-like appearance with history of the gold-mining era being preserved.
  • Julies place is of a high standard and very comfortable. She provides thoughtful assistance, a fine continental breakfast and is very approachable. We will certainly check out her accommodation for future stays in the area.

  • Julie and Gavin were great hosts for my overnight stay in Maldon, for a wedding I was attending in the town. I made a very late booking on the morning of my stay, yet Julie was very fast and friendly in responding to my enquiry, and made booking so easy. I met them both as I was checking in, and they made me feel very at home and safe. Gavin offered to give me a tour of the town, and asked if I needed a lift to the venue. Julie and Gavin impressed me in that I felt I could have asked them for advice or help if any problem had arisen - none did - yet they also totally respected my privacy as a guest. Very highly recommended and I would stay with them again without any hesitation. - Scott

  • The Mudhouse is a serene and peaceful retreat only a very short drive from the centre of Castlemaine. Surrounded by tall trees and with some sheep, bunnies, a peacock and a friendly dog as your neighbour, it is easy to relax. It was comfortably furnished, and we felt immediately at home with an icy drink and croissants awaiting us on arrival. With Athena and Yvette’s property next door, we also felt it was very safe and quite private. The house was perfect for our little dog too. The backyard isn’t enclosed, but we walked around the vast property for our dog to enjoy the smells of nature, and of course to play with the resident dog Totero. It is a lovely location for an escape, and we look forward to visiting again soon.

A charming, light-filled, barn-like home, set in a large, established old garden, with a mezzanine, fully equipped kitchen, wood heater, rugs, lamps, board games and lovely late afternoon light. An easy walk both to the Castlemaine restaurant and theatre precinct and to walking tracks in the bush.
There is a single bed on the mezzanine with a desk, and a futon mattress on a day bed, should it be needed, though this is more suitable for an older child ( since it is accessed by a ladder, it isn't suitable for toddlers) and is in the main living area. I can sometimes and by previous arrangement, provide a vegetarian meal for $20. Tea, coffee, toast, muesli and yoghurt included. If you have kids, there is a trampoline in the garden. There are also two bikes with helmets to ride to town, a blue tooth stereo and a bath. If you would like to catch the train here, I can pick you up from the station. Otherwise there is plenty of room for parking. Just a warning also that the wifi is not reliable, especially if the weather is bad. Also there is no air conditioning, only a ceiling fan and a stand up fan for the bed.
Castlemaine is a lovely old gold mine town with plenty of historic buildings, a lively local community and a vibrant hub of art galleries, great restaurants, the mill market and a grand old theatre that shows current films and hosts live music. There are also many small towns in the vicinity including Guildford, Newstead, Maldon and Vaughn Springs and a twenty five minute drive to Daylesford and the spa town of Hepburn Springs. There are many walking and bike tracks through native bushland, or the nearby botanical gardens, or Kalimna park.
  • Martinez’s place was great. It’s close enough to walk into town, has a lovely interior, a super comfy bed and a gorgeous dog who loves a pat! What more could you want!

Inspired by country living, art and found objects! An eclectic, creative, energetic space nestled in lovely bush. Just a short trip to Castlemaine, Maldon and Bendigo. Lovely natural light, a comfortable home, and a delight of native wildlife.
Nestled on the Muckleford Creek, this lovely bit of Central Victoria has a certain zing to it. Maybe it's because of the location between our two local mountains (small ones, but hey, there's a network of rivers and streams as a result!) Some would say that all that water brings a positive energy to the area. I think so, along with the clean air, lovely local villages, and beaut country people.
Walmer is a farming district of Mount Alexander Shire, and is really handy in its location to easily get to surrounding towns and districts, such as Castlemaine, Maldon, Bendigo, Maryborough. In either direction along the dirt road the local farms and hobbyists are home to cattle, sheep, horses, donkeys, emus, chickens; even peacocks! The latter tend to spend much of their time around here ... somewhat noisily but with that comes such beauty!
  • Deanna is a wonderful and generous host. Her home is situated in a quiet rural setting where you can enjoy morning mist and birdsong, a walk through the country and crystal clear evening skies resplendent with the entire Milky Way. The house and grounds are full of original art and historic curios. Staying with Deanna is as much about a beautiful retreat experience as it is about accommodation!!

  • The most relaxing stay I’ve had somewhere in a long time. When you need to be In a place where the only sound is the wind in the trees ... Beautiful home with a distinctive, inviting mid century aesthetic. Deanna’s muesli is to die for as well.

  • Deanna's place was comfortable and clean, if a little snug. She was helpful and friendly (even showed us her recipe to make almond milk). The surrounds were huge and made for a nice walk in the morning. All in, a pleasant stay.

  • Our stay with Deanna was the perfect weekend getaway for unwinding, and only a short drive to Castlemaine. Deanna's place was clean, spacious but cosy and full of light and character :) Being able to spot the stunning resident peacock roaming the grounds was a bonus! Deanna was very thoughtful and generous with her time, teaching us to make Kombucha an sharing local tips, and recipes for sustainable and healthy living. We had a great time and left feeling restored and inspired.

  • I've stayed at Deanna's home twice now and already look forward to next year's stay! She's created a lovely, immaculately clean, artistic home with beautiful--and some quirky--original artworks inside and out. It's on a lovely quiet bush property--the evening sky so clear and starry, the mornings so full of birdsong! Deanna is a very generous host and super knowledgeable about the area whether it's about local artists, the native flora and fauna.

  • Deanna's place was lovely and beautifully peaceful. Really enjoyed the serenity and quiet, and the lovely retro decor and delicate touches of her home. She was warm and welcoming and made us feel very at home, was interesting to talk to, and we felt very nurtured during the visit. Thank you!
