Places to stay in Tabo

Places to stay in Tabo
Our House in Tabo is a quaint little home just off the highway, with apricots in front yard & views of the rainbow mountains from its balconies and windows. Time here in Tabo moves slowly as kids make their way to the only school in the town through wheat fields, desert mountains, and mud houses, grannies milking cows, and the monks with their everyday chores in the world’s oldest monastery. Its lakes and waterfalls freeze in the winters, whereas summers bring the entire landscape to life.
This home with 6 private rooms all with attached private bathroom and a common area where you'll often find fellow travellers chilling with the host, playing board games, reading books or having scrumptious home-cooked meals and making memories for a lifetime. We used scrap water bottles in the construction of this house which provides great insulation in winters, thus making the place warmer in extreme winters.
Tabo is a small village with those quaint Tibetan houses analogous to the Himalayas- rectangular structures with white walls, maroon and black paints decorating their window and door frames. The people of Tabo lead a conventional mountain life which is interesting to observe and know about, and a walk around the village is the best way to go about it. Tabo Monastery: The second oldest monastery of the world, the Tabo Monastery was built way back in 996 and has a sacred and quaint charm about it. Also known as the Ellora of the Himalayas, it is made entirely of mud. It overlooks the splendid desert mountains of the Spiti district and is known to be the Dalai Lama’s favourite! Cave Exploration (Summers) Tabo is home to a series of caves sprawled over a stretch of a kilometre. They are known for their petroglyphs (ancient rock carvings), which makes them very interesting for cave exploration. Only a short walk from the home, the caves have recently been made accessible for visitors and thus offer a unique experience. Trek to the Meditation Caves Used in the olden times by the Tibetan Lamas to meditate, these caves home phenomenal tranquillity. They are located in Lari, 9 km from Tabo. To reach them, one has to drive for the first 5km and hike for the next 4, making for an adventurous half-day trip. Ice Skating (Winters) There’s a lake near Tabo that freezes up in winters, inviting adventurers for ice skating. This is a complimentary experience by the hosts for all travellers who visit them in winters. Frozen River Hike (Winters Only) It is not every day that you get to hike across a frozen river, that too, to reach a stunning frozen waterfall. This one-of-a-kind experience is very accessible from Tabo. On your way back, you can also stop by the frozen lake for ice skating. The hike is a chargeable activity.
  • Mr. Cherring, his wife and Ravi were all such fantastic hosts, they made our stay very enjoyable! His house is so well designed - big living areas with a lot of natural light, a beautiful dining area, and sun facing rooms which keep them warm. We had the best sleep and the best shower here in all our Himachal trip! We had wonderful evenings as well by the bonfire with Mr. Cherring and other guests. We highly recommend staying here and look forward to visiting again.

  • It's a nice place to stay.. Though it's quite a challenge to reach their home from the road, host ensured our safety from the road to their premises. Food was tasty and they welcomed inside their warm house for dinner because of chilling weather. Very neat and scenic location. Enjoy the local apple wine and bonfire

This House in Kibber, with its windows & front yard, faced to the clustered toy-like white & brown mud houses of the hamlet. The town further looks at the dark brown mountains, & they, in turn, look up at shinier, snow-clad ones. Away from the bustle of Kaza & still close enough to visit the prominent landmarks or spotting Snow Leopards, Kibber is an experience in itself.
Turning into nothing less than the fantastical town of Narnia in winters and adorning a rich palette of dusty browns in summers, Kibber takes you back in time with its tranquillity and traditional lifestyle. The days here ring with Tibetan prayer chants and the chuckles of the gleeful villagers, whereas the nights bring thousands of stars into play up above.

  • Indu’s place (tashi homestay) is one of the best place i have ever visited. In the cold freezing temperature of spiti, you will find Indira Didi and her mother as the most warm people, who will touch the deep roots of your heart with their great hospitality and care. Inspite of homestay, i will prefer to call this place home, where you have a mother and sister, who worries and cares about u like anything. Also u will have a small naughty brother to play with. All of them are pure hearted and u will get attached with them. I would love to visit them again and again.

The Alpine Nest is located in the middle of picturesque Reckong Peo area with distance of 3.5 Km from Kalpa and Reckong Peo downtown
  • This place is halfway from Reckong Peo to Kalpa, so it is a good option for a short stay, to see Kalpa also. It is clean and the room had the nicest bed I had so far in India. The staff is very very helpful, they fetched me at 4 am in the morning from the bus stand and took me there again at 5 am the next day. Recommended stay, if you don’t need a balcony!

  • It's a neat and clean establishment conveniently undistanced from the bus stand so that you can indulge the much needed peace the mountains so amply proffer. And the food, cooked by Mr BR Chauhan, helped by the young and energetic Sonu, is surprisingly detectible! You simply must try their kadhai or shahi paneer. They are also a most devoted and hardworking team who gave us an excellent experience of Indian hospitality! There's spectacular view of the Kinner Kailash peaks from the hotel, really excellent for some meditation. Mr Devi Singh ji is a most devoted host. I loved everything about my stay with them and hope I'll get to stay with them again!

Kaza is famous for its colourful festivals. The Back side view The backside view of the hotel starts with fields where locals grow cereals and vegetables in the summer season. Also, one can find grasslands in the close proximity where hundreds of livestock of goats and sheep could be found grazing. • Wanderer's Nest is a perfect place to stay during your visit to Kaza. It is closer to the main market and the bus stand, yet it is nestled inside such that you are away from the hustle bustle of the market area. Tanya's property sits quietly by the Spiti river and overlooks the beautiful snow capped mountains. It has a perfect location for early morning and evening walks by the river. The property has two common spaces, one on the inside which is a cozy, neat and thoughtfully decorated common room and the other is a veranda outside the house which is an ideal spot to soak in the sun during the day, while having a scenic view. These are ideal spots to have conversations with other travellers and Tanya herself. She also has a really good cook who makes excellent home food on request. All other information has been provided on the page. Tanya herself is a wonderful host - warm and welcoming, and makes you feel at home. It felt like I was staying with a friend of mine as I got to have such wonderful conversations with Tanya during my stay. Tanya believes in simplicity, zero plastic and optimum utilisation of resources Spiti has to offer, and as responsible travellers, we should respect that and abide by it during our stay in Spiti. I had a lovely stay and I am sure to return to Wanderer's Nest next time I am in Kaza.

  • First of all, thank you Tanya for being such a wonderful host! Lovely homestay you’re running at the end of the road. It was not too difficult to find with the location markers already placed on the streets; one plus point about the place being very near the bus stand and main market. I really loved the vibe of the place and got to meet so many interesting personas during my stay. She even extended my stay without any reservations when I asked her to. Will definitely come back here again. One thing to note to other travellers, Spiti Valley has water and trash disposal problems, so don’t give the host too much of a headache regarding the same. She tries her best to make it perfect for everyone but there’s still a limit. Thank you Tanya! I had a lovely time in Kaza.

  • A great place nestled at foot hills of mountain range and next to Spiti river. An amazing place with authentic Spitian ambiance. The killer view is the panoply of stars from the terrace. The home stay is close to central market but yet away from its hum drum.
