Places to stay in Shell Lake

Places to stay in Shell Lake
Snuggled in the woods in the southeast section of Burnett County, you will find a rustic, minimally maintained, one-room camper cabin. Only accessible by foot, fat bike, snowshoes, skis, or horseback (during the summer & fall), the camper cabin provides a basic shelter for people that want the "camping experience" without having to handle a tent, or have the weather ruin their visit. Within walking distance of the Timberland Hills X-country ski area and the Ice Age Trail.
COVID-19 -- We want to be sure that everyone is aware that there are times we are unable to visit the Camper Cabin in between guests, which is why we ask that you tidy up the cabin before you leave. As a precaution, we recommend that you bring some sanitary wipes or sprays with you and simply wipe off the doorknobs, counter, table and any other area to help combat against the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19), or for that matter, any other germs. The camper cabin is 10x24 feet in size with an attached deck. Inside is a table, benches, wood stove, and wooden bunk beds with foam mattresses. No linens or pillows are provided, so be sure to bring your sleeping bag. No electricity or running water is available, however, there is a pit toilet and a wood stove for heat in the winter months. We do try to keep a supply of wood onsite for use in the wood stove. You are NOT allowed to carry in any wood. If the supply is depleted, there is plenty of dead and down wood around the cabin area that you are allowed to collect for your use. An ax and saw is provided for your use. Please keep in mind that the cabin is not heated when not rented. In cold temperatures, it will take a few hours for the cabin to warm up. You will want to get a fire going and take a hike or go skiing for awhile to let the cabin get comfortable. Outside the camper cabin is a deck, fire ring with grate, log benches, picnic table, and outhouse. You'll want to be sure to clean up all your food so not to attract bears or other animals to the site. Accessibility: The camper cabin is accessible only by foot, fat bike, snowshoes, skis, or horseback (summer and fall months only). No motorized vehicles of any kind are allowed. The hike to the cabin is about 1/2 mile, with some hills. The hike can be quite muddy in the spring or after heavy rain, and you will be walking through snow in the winter. Bring appropriate footwear. When hiking or snowshoeing in, please do not walk on the groomed side of the ski trail, staying on the opposite side in single file. Capacity: Up to 6 people. There is a bunk bed with 2 full size mattresses and another bunk bed with 2 twin size mattresses. Additional overnight guests are not allowed. Your well-behaved pets are allowed. It is your responsibility to clean up after your pets. Bathroom: There is an outhouse available year-round. Water: There is no indoor plumbing or access to potable water. You will need to carry water in, so plan accordingly. The closest place to purchase water would be in the town of Barronett, which is appr. 8.5 miles southeast. Electricity: There is no electricity in the cabin. Be sure to bring your battery powered headlamps or lanterns. Candles or any other open flames are not allowed inside the cabin (other than what you use to light the wood stove). Cooking: There is a fire ring with a grate for cooking outside. You are in bear country, so be sure to clean up all food residue so as not to attract any unwanted, furry visitors. No open flames are allowed inside the cabin, however, cooking is permitted if the weather does not allow you to use the grate over the campfire ring and during the winter months with your pans or kettles on the wood stove. You may also bring a portable propane cook stove. Please use extra caution when cooking indoors. Heat: There is a wood stove in the cabin. Matches, lighters or other ignition sources are NOT provided, so please plan accordingly. In cold temperatures, it will take a few hours for the cabin to warm up. You will want to get a fire going and take a hike or go skiing for awhile. Once it's warm, it's good and cozy! Campfires: Fires are only permitted within the fire ring. All fires must be extinguished and cool enough to touch with your hand before leaving the site. You are responsible if the campfire gets away. You are liable for all expenses incurred in suppressing the fire and will be responsible for all damages caused by this fire. Campfires are not allowed when County or State emergency fire regulations are in effect. Firewood: You are NOT allowed to bring in wood from another area. We do try to keep a supply of wood for the wood stove to heat the cabin. If that supply has been depleted, you are allowed to collect dead and down wood from the surrounding area for the campfire ring, or the wood stove if needed. No cutting of live trees or shrubs is allowed. An ax and saw will be provided for use. Smoking: No smoking or vaping is allowed inside the camper cabin. If you do smoke, please do so outside disposing the butts in the fire ring or designated ash can.
The camper cabin is within walking distance to the Ice Age Trail, along with countless opportunities for hiking throughout the hundreds of acres of county forest land. Enjoy picking berries, mushrooms, tree seeds, or other edible fruits in the forest during their seasons! Just note that collection must not damage the plants or the natural features of the land. Know what you are consuming. You will be in the Timberland Hills Ski Area: during the months of December through March, guests are able to use the 30 KM of groomed trails for cross country skiing. There is also an established trail for fat bikes and skijoring. Hiking, hunting, horseback riding (in the summer and fall), and biking are popular activities the rest of the year. Mosquitoes, ticks, and bees do exist. You may want to bring along some repellent. Hearing loons, owls, coyotes, and other wildlife at night is quite common. Remember, this is bear country. Approximately 26 miles northwest of the cabin is the town of Siren. Once there you will find gas stations, a grocery store, auto repair, numerous restaurants, a movie theater, shopping, beaches, parks, mini-golf, and a golf course just west of town. About 3 miles from the cabin is a place where you can wet your whistle and get a bite to eat called the Timberland Bar & Grill. About 8 miles east is the small town of Barronett. They have a gas station, a couple of restaurants, a tire shop, and an organic grocery store. Cumberland Memorial Hospital is approximately 13 miles southeast in Cumberland, WI. Burnett County has over 150 thousand acres of public land with over 111 thousand acres of that being County Forest Land. Hunters come from afar during various seasons to pursue their game of choice, including whitetail deer, black bear, Canadian geese, ducks, ruffed grouse, and wild turkey. Catch some fish in any of our rivers, streams, or from one of our hundreds of lakes. Burnett County is home to the Jordan Buck, the Wisconsin record black bear, and the state record Hook and Line sturgeon.

  • My mom and two sisters stayed here one night. It was a fun winter stay. Beautiful Be sure to bring water flashlights and read carefully what to bring. It’s a 1/2 mile hike to this cabin from the parking lot so pack only what you will need. It was safe feeling. Oh yeah and it’s an outhouse in the winter .... cold ! Lol It was a good time then mattresses on the bunks were very comfortable considering. I would stay here again.

  • We went in Janiary for a couple days of skiing. The place was perfect - right on the trails and homie feeling. Looking forward to returning again soon!

  • This cabin is the perfect spot to get away and go cross-country skiing! It was quaint, unique, isolated, and everything else we had hoped for and more. Truly a perfect winter camping experience without the hassle of a tent! We will definitely be returning in the future!!

    Foster2020-01-20T00:00:00Z
  • The cabin is beautiful. If you are looking for an off the grid, but not too rugged of an experience, this is for you! Once warm the cabin is very comfortable. We cooked on a camp stove, but quickly warmed water for tea and oatmeal on the wood stove. It is fun to see the skiers glide by. Reminder: pack your slippers!

  • I would recommend this cabin to anyone who loves the outdoors! Our stay was during a warm spell around Christmas, with temperatures around 35° or so. The stove kept the cabin very cozy and warm. Our kids loved the bunk beds and we had plenty of room at the table. Very clean, and I received multiple messages with very clear directions about checking in. Would love to return!!

    Rachel2019-12-22T00:00:00Z
  • Very nice camping cabin even after a heavy snowfall, love the fire stove and would back there very soon. Just should be prepared for 20 min hiking in winter and arrive there before dark.

  • Great place to stay

    Ginger2019-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • This is the second year in a row that we have stayed in this cabin and had a fantastic time again. The house provides an excellent beach and spacious yard to enjoy being outside. The water just off the beach remains shallow with a soft, sandy bottom. The kitchen has everything you need in order to prepare all your own food, and the house also offers a charcoal grill including a charcoal chimney. We enjoyed our stay at this great lakeside cabin and plan to return in future years.

  • Perfect cabin for a family! We have small children, and found it to be very family friendly with lots of amenities for kiddos! The beautiful beach front and extensive clear shallow lake made this a memorable spot for the kids and adults to play! Just bring your swimsuit the cabin has all you need, kitchen fully stocked plus lots of games, kayaks, sand/water toys, bikes, movies, books, all made for a wonderful stay!

    Samantha2019-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • Sandy Shore Lodge is a beautiful home with all the amenities you need to enjoy your vacation. The cabin accommodated 5 adults and 3 children comfortably, but we spent most of our time at the beach. Shell Lake is shallow and clear which made it perfect for playing in the water with the kids. We will definitely be back!

    Jeanine2019-08-18T00:00:00Z
  • My family loved this place. It's very roomy and comfortable. Plenty of space inside and outside for all of us. The lake is awesome. Sandy bottom, clear water, and shallow past the end of the dock. Don't know about fishing cuz we didn't fish. We walked or biked to the market in town for things we needed for dinners. Also enjoyed an adult beverage at Klopps bar. Beautiful sunsets ! I highly recommend Sandy Shore lodge. We will be back.

    Sue2019-07-14T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful space! wonderful location on the lake with great views! We look forward to booking again! ♥️

  • This is a fun place right on Shell Lake. We enjoyed launching our kayaks from Tiffany’s waterfront property and the short walk to the community beach, playground and town. We took advantage of Shell Lake’s nice bar and grill, art center and coffee house called The Potter’s Shed, antique shop, grocery store and two ice cream shops which we enjoyed. Tiffany’s place was very clean, well stocked with towels, has a well equipped kitchen, fun fire pit, large gathering space in the home and deck outside. Our family had a very nice stay.

Enjoy this charming 2 bedroom cabin on Cable Lake in Spooner, Wisconsin. In the early 1930’s, an old boxcar was skidded across the frozen Cable Lake and became a cozy little cabin. Today, tucked beneath a stand of mature Norway pines, it is a great place to enjoy the solitude and beauty of northern Wisconsin. The large front deck sits right on the waters edge and is a perfect place to relax, watch the loons, bald eagles & sunsets or plan your fishing strategy. Perfect for up to 4 people.
Beautiful sandy bottom along the shore for swimming with private dock. Public boat landing on lake. Good fishing, fire-pit, charcoal grill, swing set, parking for 2 vehicles.
  • It's hard to overstate how wonderful the Boxcar is as a cozy, private, relaxing getaway. The hosts are gracious and thoughtful, the cabin is spotless and perfectly situated on a pretty and peaceful lake, and if you get tired of the beauty and tranquility of the location, it's a five minute drive to town, which features plenty of grocery and supply outlets to cover all of the basic necessities, cute boutiques and souvenir shops, local museums and arts events, an uncountable number of hardware stores, and a variety of recreation rentals and restaurants, including the hosts' terrific Round Man brew pub and Dock coffee house. We'll be back!

  • The perfect getaway for anyone who wants to get a little R&R while having the option of enjoying some small town fun in nearby Spooner. The cabin has all the necessities you can ask for with charm. You can spend hours memorized by the beauty of the water and sounds of nature around you in this secluded area. A big ‘thank you’ to Jeff and Sue for being such wonderful hosts. And, we can’t forget Parker (one of the sweetest choc labs you could meet) with his daily welcoming visits to the cabin. Thanks for the unforgettable trip!

    Betsey2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • Our second stay at the Boxcar cabin. It was as remembered from last year. Love the location, amenities, vacation dog, Parker.

    Mary Jo2019-09-14T00:00:00Z
  • The Boxcar is completely charming and cozy-the perfect place for our weekend couples getaway. The beds were very comfortable. The lake is beautiful and quiet. The deck space is right on the lake-just fantastic. Yard is lovely with room for us to play corn hole and cookout. We had a great time visiting the surrounding area. Jeff & Sue made us feel so welcome. We really enjoyed our stay!

    Kirby2019-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • Great place for a quiet relaxing getaway!!

    Tanya2019-08-23T00:00:00Z
  • The boxcar was a perfect little getaway - quiet, peaceful, clean and all around inviting. Our kids LOVED swimming and fishing off the dock, and Jeff and Sue were wonderful and inviting hosts, even welcoming our kids to play at their dock with their grandkids. Couldn't have asked for a better location and accommodations. Thanks for a great few days!

    Krista2019-08-15T00:00:00Z
  • Charming cabin has a sweet grandma style. It is right on the lake with sandy beach, fishing docks and surrounded by mature pine trees. Beautiful spot to relax. Sue and Jeff, thank you very much for your hospitality and extra supply you provided in the cabin. We were happy at your place.

    Galina2019-08-12T00:00:00Z
  • The boxcar was the perfect little getaway cabin for our family vacation. The cabin was just the right size for us, and allowed us opportunity to briefly entertain family and friends on the back deck (everyone just raved about the boxcar and the direct access to the lake). The decor and amenities made us feel right at home, and we appreciated the WiFi access and direct tv, although we definitely spent most of our time outdoors lounging on the deck, swimming in the lake, or fishing off the dock. The boxcar location was great and super private, which we loved; the convenience to town and all the local shops was a huge, plus, our favorite bar haunts felt like they were all right around the corner. The back deck was probably our favorite spot to just hangout, relax, and enjoy the lake landscape and local nature. Parker the dog was an unexpected delight, he was so charming and always so welcoming to us; watching him fish for hours on end was a definite highlight for all of us. We definitely miss him already. Sue and Jeff, you both were gracious hosts and we enjoyed getting to know them during our stay. They are both super busy people, but they were always available when we had any questions. We love their businesses The Dock Coffee and Round Man Brewing Company, and definitely recommend them both. Having Dock Coffee available in the boxcar was a special treat each morning.

  • We were so lucky to find this cute apartment for a cross country ski weekend. Close to Spooner and about half an hour from Hayward. Lots of good skiing in the area. The apartment is at the side of the detached garage overlooking Spooner Lake. It was the perfect space for two of us but could sleep a couple more on the sofa sleeper. Nice Northwoods touches and antiques made for a quaint retreat. The place was impeccably clean. Matt and Joy were very helpful with communication and directions. We look forward to staying there again.

  • A gem of a place to stay! Matt is such a helpful and accommodating host!

    Jonathan2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • This cute little guest apartment is located on a quiet, private road less than 15 minutes outside of Spooner. My husband & I stayed for the weekend with our two dogs & were pleasantly surprised. The apartment was roomier than we thought it would be & was perfectly sized for the four of us. We were able to take the dogs for walks along the road, next to the lake. There is also a nice dog park in Spooner, where our dogs got to meet new friends. Matt was very helpful with suggestions about things to do & places to eat. My husband and I are already talking about visiting again in summer!

    Sara2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful, cozy place! The interior is brand new and welcoming. My wife and I spent the night and cross-country skied in the area. Kind and courteous hosts. I highly recommend to anyone!

Welcome to Hunt Hill Audubon Sanctuary! We are a private, non-profit environmental education and learning center. The rustic Andrews Cabin offers a peaceful retreat in the woods. The Andrews Cabin is located just off the main camp, settled on top of a hill overlooking forest and lakes. All new furniture, curtains and newer appliances were installed in May 2019. Nearby towns offer additional entertainment or relax in our quiet setting while reading a good book in front of the stone fireplace.
This cabin is perfect for those looking for a cozy, no frills, rustic cabin-camping experience in the woods of northern Wisconsin. The cabin was built in 1917. All new mattresses, furniture, lamps, and curtains were installed in May 2019. The cabin is located near the parking area and has one step to get into the building. The entrance into the cabin is on the west side of the cabin. It features original hardwood floors, log construction and a field stone fireplace. The cabin has a private bathroom with large shower, vanity, shelves, wooden hangers and flushing toilet. The kitchen includes a sink, oven/stove with four burners, fridge, microwave, toaster, and coffee maker. It has some dishes, pots, pans, eating and cooking utensils. Dish soap and dishtowels are provided, but dishes must be handwashed by our guests. Bedroom one features a queen bed and twin bed. Each bed has a night stand with lamp. There is a small table for placing luggage and hooks on the wall. Bedroom two has a bunk bed. The lower bunk is a full size mattress and the upper bunk is a twin. Both beds have their own light and the room also has a small closet with dresser. The living room has a large dining room table that can be expanded to seat 6 people. There is a large couch and two sitting areas with chairs. The large field stone fireplace offers ambiance to the space, but does little to heat the room. There is a wood shed near the cabin for the fireplace and a wood box located on the screen porch. There is a bookcase that holds books, games and puzzles. The large screen porch has a picnic table and an outdoor table with four chairs. Guests can also admire the original wood stove from the cabin. There are no lights in the screen porch. There is no heat or a/c in this cabin as it is only seasonal. It stays relatively cool in the summer thanks to the shading from the trees, but on the hottest days of the summer, a fan is provided for guests. We do our best to keep the century-old cabin pest free, but it is not sealed tight. So, guests should be aware that on occasion, there may be mice present - especially in the fall as they make their way towards warmer locations in preparation of winter. We recommend keeping food items in the provided bins, make sure garbage is properly stored and dirty dishes are cleaned up often. Also, the cabin is located in the beautiful woods of northern Wisconsin. Because of this, guests will experience bugs such as mosquitoes and sometimes deer flies. If you are hiking during the summer, you may also find ticks. It is recommended to wear long sleeves and pants while hiking and to bring bug spray if you will spend time outdoors.
The cabin is located on a 600 acre nature preserve in northern Wisconsin. The cabin is secluded, sitting on a hill in the woods. There is one other cabin located around 50 feet away. Nearby, we are surrounded by many small towns that feature a variety of recreational activities such as: skiing, snowmobiling, disc golf, golf, a wonderful sand beach in Shell Lake, fishing, shopping, hiking and more! There are also many restaurants and bars close by.
  • Area is woody, cabin is well kept, private and charming.

  • Beautiful and Charming location!

    Erik2018-09-16T00:00:00Z
  • This is an old-fashioned cabin, very comfortable, with a nice kitchen and bathroom and two bedrooms. It accommodated seven of us comfortably (we took a campbed with us to supplement the beds and pull out sofa the cabin had to offer). It is surrounded by trails that take you through the woods and through grasslands and down to a chain of lakes on which you can canoe (canoes and kayaks available at the nature center next door). A great place for a holiday and we had a great time. Many thanks to our host, Nikki.

Feels like a world away, but you are only minutes from Spooner's quaint downtown filled with fun shops, the new Round Man Brew Pub and other bars, restaurants, coffee shops, bakery, even a movie theater. Plenty of nearby hiking, snowshoe or cross country ski trails.
This cabin is warm and welcoming, the perfect, peaceful spot for a relaxing getaway. You will find comfy furniture, Dish TV, wifi, a DVD player & plenty of movies, books and lots of games. A wood stove for a warm glow on those chilly winter nights. Watch the snowfall through the sliding glass doors in both the great room and master bedroom.
This is an awesome location for both quiet relaxation and easy access to plenty of activity, with Spooner only minutes away. Our welcome basket is loaded with information on many nearby places for you to explore - hiking trails, shopping, food & drink, parks, lakes, etc. Close to Shell Lake and centrally located to Siren, Rice Lake or Hayward - all 30 min away or less. Also nearby are an eclectic winery, a “homegrown” distillery on a farm, the St. Croix Casino in Hertel and more. *Please note: one of the things that makes our place special is the quiet, private road that our cabin is located on. We are respectful of private neighboring properties & expect you will be, too.
  • This space was lovely! The owners thought of everything!

    Charlene2020-01-20T00:00:00Z
  • This is an ideal Airbnb stay. Truly everything. The place was so cozy and Northwoods fancy, the fireplace being our favorite thing. Had everything we needed. The place felt private and secluded enough where it provided the ideal space to celebrate our 2nd anniversary. We never left! And to top it off, our dog loved the space too. Janean is a great host and was very available, wanting to make sure we had everything we needed to feel comfortable and have a great renting experience. We will be back for sure.

  • This is a great place. Pretty view of the river and you don’t see any neighboring houses. One of the best places I’ve stayed. They’ve thought of everything you need and are quick to respond to any questions. I highly recommend!

    Susan2020-01-05T00:00:00Z
  • Great place to stay. We came up from Indiana for 3 nights to unwind and relax with our 2 dogs. Everything about the cabin was great, and Janean was an excellent host! The cabin is outfitted with all the kitchen supplies we needed, and the game/DVD selection was great. The master bed was also very comfy. Definitely recommend - we’ll be back. On a side note, Spooner is a fun and lively town with lots to do - very friendly locals.

  • An amazingly beautiful cabin and property. All the amenities one could ask for. The hosts are quick to respond to questions. Their cabin and property provided a quiet getaway for rejuvenation of spirit with a perfect view for observing nature.

  • Levi’s place was amazing and a lot of fun for a couple nights out with the guys!

    John2019-10-20T00:00:00Z
  • This was a fabulous spot for our family. The cabin had great fishing off the dock for our kids, and it was close to town, so we could go to the Shell Lake beach and playground for the kids too if they wanted a break from fishing. It was peaceful, quiet, and clean. There was a lot of wildlife too, from toads and salamanders to chipmunks and deer. The house and bunkhouse were comfortable for all. The amenities were wonderful, and the host was super quick to respond if questions arose. We would definitely book again.

    Patte2019-08-18T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great stay at Levi's cabin this past weekend. It was clean, nice, and well stocked with basic amenities. Plenty and towels, bedding, and kitchen staples to cook a meal. The lake is small but very quiet and the water was nice. We didn't end up taking out any of the boats but there were many available (canoes, kayaks, a small motor boat). The beds in the main house were very comfortable (can't speak to the bunkhouse). I would highly recommend this home!

It had everything we could have wanted for a chill winter weekend getaway. The area had a lot to offer as well, with downtown Shell Lake very close. Our hosts were very responsive, and the caretaker was super friendly and available if we had questions too. Thanks for a great stay!

  • Wonderful, cozy cabin for a getaway. Very comfortable and was even bigger than it looked in the pictures. Plenty of beds even for a group of 10, and a great, spacious living room and fireplace. The game room was also a big hit. Would absolutely return with a group again.

    Nathan2020-01-12T00:00:00Z
  • We had a friend group of adults stay at the cabin, and we had a great weekend getaway together. The cabin is even nicer than in the photos. Everything that we needed for cooking was provided, and there was enough room for us all to have private spaces for sleeping. The weather wasn't great, but it didn't even matter because there was so much to do inside the cabin! Table games, pinball, video games, and checkers by the fire were all great hits. We enjoyed our time immensely and hope to be back!

    Michele2019-11-10T00:00:00Z
  • Our group of 7 had the most wonderful fall weekend at this beautiful home. It was so welcoming, clean, comfortable and the game room was a huge hit for the whole family! The house had everything we needed and then some - extra bedding, towels, well-appointed kitchen, and so much space. Pam was such a helpful host with local recommendations that we hit - loved the Potter’s Shed and Bistro 63! Highly recommend a weekend away here!

There was more than ample space to spread out with gathering areas for small groups to play games, watch movies or work on puzzles. Eric was extremely responsive with all communications and a wonderful host!

Absolutely gorgeous interior with stylish decor and so many seating areas to relax -- living rooms, family rooms, porch, decks! We all loved it and it's not every day the 7 of us agree on something! We'd recommend it for families, friends, couples. You won't be disappointed! -- the 7 R sisters

  • The house was perfect for a large extended family get together. The house was split into a few sections which was nice for the early risers to have a their own area and the night owls to have a place to stay up late and play games. It was warm and cozy and definitely had the cabin feel. Would be perfect for a winter get away as well with all the flexible space in the home to work with!

    Amber2019-09-02T00:00:00Z

  • What can I say? ...this property checked off all our boxes and then some!! We went up North to see the fall colors. This is by far the coziest cabin we have ever rented. Love that it was designed with such care and filled with things that are meaningful to the owner. We found ourselves saying "hmmm I wonder if he would sell it?" . Anthony was very responsive. Fantastic experience!

  • The cabin is so cute and was very comfortable for a group of six. We had a great weekend. The only problem was the bugs outside were a little intense so we didn’t get to enjoy the outdoor space as much as we wished.

    Emma2019-07-21T00:00:00Z
  • Gorgeous log cabin with lots of artisan Norse decor. We were there in February for a Nordic ski marathon (American Birkebeiner) and the cabin was a super cozy place to kick back after a long day on the trails. Tony was a great host and very fast to respond to messages. Highly recommended.

  • Great place to stay. Good swimming, well stocked kitchen, excellent bedding on all the beds. Overall very nice.

  • Very special Nordic artifacts in a charming and beautiful cabin. Easy access to the lake, which was sparkling clear and warm. Enjoyed using the hot tub, BBQ and paddle boards. Grand fireplace. On the downside, one bathroom for six people was somewhat challenging and on hot evenings plenty of mosquitos outside made the lack of a/c quite uncomfortable. Tony was super available for any issues we had and responded in minutes to all requests.

Welcome to Hunt Hill Audubon Sanctuary! We are a public, non-profit learning center and nature sanctuary. Our historic Log Cabin is nearly a century old and offers a peaceful retreat in the woods. All the furniture was updated in 2018. The Log Cabin is located just outside of the main camp, settled on top of a hill overlooking pristine forest habitat. Nearby towns offer additional entertainment or relax in our quiet setting while reading a good book in front of the stone fireplace.
This cabin is perfect for those looking for a cozy, no frills, rustic cabin-camping experience in the woods of northern Wisconsin. The historic Log Cabin sits on top of a small hill, accessible by steps, and was built in the 1930s. It features handmade log construction, hardwood floor, a stone fireplace, handmade windows and doors, forged hinges and latches, and square nails. The cabin has a tiny bathroom, quaint kitchen, one master bedroom with a queen size bed, a living room with room for an air bed (provided), and a tiny loft with a twin-size mattress. It also has an unheated porch overlooking the forests of the nature sanctuary. When indoor plumbing was added to the cabin, there was limited space for the bathroom. Because of this, there is no formal bathroom in this cabin. Located near the front door, there is a water closet that has the toilet, and next to it is the stand up shower, which is not in a private room (see the photos). The kitchen includes a sink, small oven/stove with four burners, fridge, microwave, toaster, and coffee maker. It has some dishes, pots, pans, eating and cooking utensils. Dish soap and dishtowels are provided, but dishes must be handwashed by our guests. The bedroom is simple, but spacious and features a queen bed with night stands, lamp and dresser. The living room has a dining table with 2 chairs and a large stone fireplace. The fireplace offers ambiance to the space, but is inefficient in heating the cabin. Wood for the fireplace is located in the wood box on the front porch. A controllable thermostat allows guests to set the temperature of the cabin to their preference (there is no a/c, however the shady location keeps the cabin cool in summer). The living room has a love seat, room to set up the provided air mattress and soft chairs. There is also a tiny loft in the living room that is accessible by a log ladder and has a twin mattress on it. There is no television or internet service at the cabin. We do our best to keep the nearly century-old cabin pest free, but it is not sealed tight. So, guests should be aware that on occasion, there may be mice present - especially in the fall as they make their way towards warmer locations in preparation of winter. We recommend keeping food items in the provided bins, make sure garbage is properly stored and dirty dishes are cleaned up often. Also, the log cabin is located in the beautiful woods of northern Wisconsin.
  • Charming, quaint, well kept, super clean, rustic cabin. A wonderful little winter getaway in the woods.

    Michelle2020-03-10T00:00:00Z
  • This was absolutely perfect! The cabin was rustic as described, and so cozy. There was beautiful scenery looking out from the cabin and along the hiking trails. We did have phone reception, but chose to spend the weekend “unplugged”, playing board games, snowshoeing, and relaxing by the fireplace. Will definitely be back!!

    Stephanie2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • This was our second year staying at Hunt Hill cabin. We love how rustic it is.

    Elly2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • Awesome cabin on a beautiful piece of property! We lucked out and had heavy snowfall which made the view from the cabin window stunning. No TV, no DVD, no Wi-fi made for the perfect weekend respite from modernity. Do bring a big supply of dry kindling or fat wood fire starter sticks as the large chunks of provided firewood don't catch very well. Also, keeping the door to the kitchen closed helps keep the heat in the living room. Finally, the queen bed was very comfortable, which isn't always the case in cabins. We will be back!

  • Incredible, rustic, quaint log cabin nested away in the woods. Gorgeous surroundings, excellent hiking and tons of birds! Highly recommend!

  • This place is truly great. We (2 adults + a dog) went in the winter and it was pretty perfect. One tip: In the winter, if you want to use the fireplace on the first day, bring your own wood. Due to snow and freezing temps, we had to let the provided logs dry for over 24hrs before using them.

Loon Lodge is located on beautiful 3300 acre Long Lake, Washburn county Wisconsin the Walleye capital of Wisconsin. The cabin has 5 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, two kitchens and comes with many amenities. The cabin is located on the waters edge and comes with a Lund fishing boat with a 15hp motor. Located on the lake are several restaurants and bars, so plan on taking your boat to dinner or to have a drink. Fishing is excellent! Great for the family or a group of hard core fisherman.
Renting the entire cabin for you exclusive use.
Beautiful cabin on the waters edge
  • The Good: - The pictures of the home and property do not do it justice! The entire cabin is decked out in knotty pine from floor to ceiling, and the cabin has ambiance like something straight out of a Pottery Barn meets backcountry wilderness magazine. - There are many floor to ceiling windows giving you amazing panorama views of the incredible property. - There are actually 2 indoor fireplaces (one on the first floor, and one in the basement), and there are also 3.5 bathrooms not 2.5- a wonderful surprise that should be advertised! - There was a cabinet upstairs filled with board games and card games- a nice touch! - See a few of our photos, attached. I wish I would’ve taken photos of the large bedrooms! - Rich gave us detailed instructions prior to our trip, including local grocery stores/bars/restaurants, which was very helpful. He also told us there would be no bath towels (despite being advertised prior to our booking) which was helpful. Things to Know: - To our surprise, the cabin is on a property with another home. Both of which share a driveway, swing set, and the one-and-only outdoor fire pit. (This was a bit of a bummer for our group, as we were planning to disconnect from all devices and spend 90% of our time outside by the fire for our long weekend, to get away from the hustle and bustle of the world... instead we woke up our first morning with children yelling and running around outside on our lawn.) So, be aware you will be sharing the outdoor areas with the neighboring house guests. - A grill is included with the cabin but be sure to stop and buy your own charcoal beforehand. (Not a gas grill, with propane tanks included.) - Cooking basics are also listed as included in the rental, however, while there are plenty of pots and pans, there is actually NO cooking oil, salt, or pepper provided. (Due to this, we had to make a second trip to the store 30 minutes away for these basic necessities.) We left what we bought behind, so the next guests should have these things :) - As Rich suggested, there were no bath towels, nor any hand towels or dish towels. (Our group was flying in from out of town, so this was definitely a burden since we were just traveling with carry-on suitcases with limited room.) In addition to bringing your bath towels, I would definitely suggest bringing hand towels/dish towels or you’ll go through paper towels quickly! - No detailed checkout list or instructions provided. From our experience, be sure to have your dishes cleaned and put away, as we left a load still running when we left and it seemed the property manager wasn’t too pleased. Overall: 5/5 Rich is fantastic and very accommodating. This is the perfect location for families and we definitely look forward to visiting again!

  • Perfect place for a large group or multiple families. Everything you need is right there. We got settled and felt right at home. Rich responded timely and was great to work with.
