Places to stay in Pithoragarh
Virgin trek trails, soul stirring views and simple Kumaoni hospitality = The Silver Oak Place. Designed by the eclectic team of Good Earth with local materials, the Silver Oak Place is a stand alone cabin with loft and large windows to let in the view. Village families provide food and laundry services to our guests and this helps them generate income. We provide lunch box and thermos service for treks and picnics
The space The village of Balipata stands at a lofty height on the Indo-Nepal border with sweeping views of the the Nanda Devi in the Lower Himalayas.
  • We all dream of a place that's selcuded from the din. A place right in the forest, where there's no one to bother you. Well The Silver Oak Place is that place. It's right inside a forest. 20 kms away from Pithoragarh. 10 kms uphill from a small town called Wadda. It's actually inside a forest. I suggest leaving early in the morning if you want to make the most of this place. I started from Champawat at around 12 and due to road construction, reached this place at 7 which was pretty dark. But if you start early at 7 or max 8, you have a good chance of making it by lunch time. The place will leave you in awe. It's asthetically built. Offers a panaromic view of the Himalayas from its porch and is designed to leave you mind-blown. An ideal place for couples, not so for backpackers if you are looking forward to interact with locals and learn about the culture. Directions to the venue: From Pithoragarh, you can take a share jeep to Wadda. From Wadda, if you are on time and lucky, you might get a shared jeep or you might have to ask the caretaker to arrange one for you. The private vehicle can charge you around ₹300-400. The food is simple, if you want something special, better carry the ingredients and ask the cook to prepare it for you coz the market is 10 kms away. Couples will love it.

  • We had very little time at the property but it was a comfortable stay. It's a pretty property in the woods, with a view of the lower Himalayan range. Highly recommend if you are looking to disconnect and enjoy the woods.

  • We booked Silver Oak Place on a whim, just based on the general location and some photographs. The idea was to go some place which would be completely away from all civilisation and spend a few days. We also had the urge to explore the region around Pithoragarh, so this seemed like an ideal place to stay. Needless to say, it fulfilled all our expectations! Silver Oak Place is located a half-hour to forty minute drive beyond the main town, which makes it's location very good. Perched high up on a hill side, the place commands splendid views of the Himalayas, spread out like a widescreen TV right in front. One can spend a whole day sitting out on the porch and watching the amazing show of nature unfold right in front. The dance of the sun and shadows on the mountains, the melodies of the wind flowing through the trees and the drama of clouds in the sky; all of which never ceases to enthral and will help you connect back to nature (and your own soul). There is some fauna too. One can spot birds of all kinds, as well as foxes and other small animals. Being the last house on the road, it is surrounded by thick forests on the higher side. Hospitality is taken care of by Kamal and his lovely wife Shobha, who live in the old house adjoining Silver Oak Place. While Kamal looks after your day-to-day needs, Shobha makes some amazingly tasty but simple dishes that you can ever have. Mostly from local ingredients, the food is healthy, wholesome and easy on the stomach. If need be, they can also make special dishes. It would be good if Kamal can be informed of your food preferences as soon as you arrive, so that he can provision for the same in one go. Remember, this is a remote location and nothing is available in the immediate vicinity; Kamal needs to trudge at least half an hour one-way to get even the most basic things. The cottage is tastefully designed, with a loft area with two beds and a lower area with two more. A group of four can easily stay here. The bathroom is spacious and is well equipped. If you are particular about toiletries, please bring your own as nothing is available here (and it is not a hotel anyway). Fresh towels and linen is provided, so no issues there. A water filter is available for filtered water, though I suspect the natural water there is good enough! Please be aware that since this is a remote location, please don't be surprised if you find a few insects in the room or outside. That's nature! One can go on long walks into the forest or simply sit around the front porch and enjoy nature's act play out before you. One can also climb up to a small meadow on the hillock above and spend a whole day lazing around. Remember to carry a dhurrie or mat. Local goatherds with their flock will pass you by and you can even end up playing with the little goats (we did that!). To sum-up, Silver Oak Place is the perfect vacation home one can think of, far away from everything that you may want to get away from. It is a perfect spot to relax, unwind, rejuvenate and come back refreshed. We have decided to go back there for a longer stay, whenever time permits. It will be great to spend time there again!

  • We lliked this wonderful place very much and recommend it to everybody

    Dinesh2019-06-13T00:00:00Z
  • The Silver Oak Place is an ideal home for people looking for privacy and tranquility, in the middle of beautiful dense oak forests. The hosts were very responsive throughout the experience, even to the questions asked before booking. This place is everything they've advertised, only better. Mr Kamal and his lovely wife took care of all our needs, and cooked us delicious homely food. They grow their own vegetables which is absolutely wonderful! Treks, bonfire, conveyance - you name it and you have it. Aesthetically speaking, the cottage is just perfect - it is built in the wilderness but still has an urban feel to it. Our overall experience was fantastic. Will definitely recommend this baller of a place to my friends and family!

    Raghav2019-04-06T00:00:00Z
  • This place is fantastic! I initially booked 2 nights (the minimum) because it’s was on my way and I found the picture of this rock bungalow beautiful and I wanted to live the experience to stay on this traditional house once in my life. At the moment I enter the bungalow I knew I will stay at least one week. It’s just a house where you feel comfortable. It’s behind my expectation. The view from the balcony and the garden is amazing. You facing the valley and you have no neighbour in you view, you’re own the valley, the mountain and the Himalaya for your self. The house is very brightl with natural sun, very good hot water for shower and comfortable bed. Extraordinary cellular reception, I hat Airtel SIM card and it's much faster than everywhere I visit in India. Kamal and his wife are so charming and dedicate to help and take care of me. She cook for me so many kinds of local food (dal, subzi, Kari…) Every day it’s was different and surprising. I am in India for 7 months already and I hate dish I never taste before and I enjoy it all. Kamal bring me to a 2 hours treck om the mountain behind the bungalow and it’s spectacular! A 360-degree view of all around. And the eagles!!! They was so many flying so close, I feel I could touch them! The communication with Mr. Mathura was easy, friendly and clear. Even the process to arrive at the bungalow it been much easier then I taught when I realize it’s not really in Pithoragarh but on the top of one of the mountain facing the city. Maybe 40 minutes from Pithoragarh. I ask Mr. Mathura to sent me the Google map direction and it was accurate, so it’s been easy to reach this place event if sometimes I taught to my self: it’s not possible, this can be the right way to the Silver Oak bungalow... But ye,s this is the way and when you reach this place you are reward for your effort. BIG TIME!!! So do not hesitate one second if you read this review and go there! Great hoptitality, great peoples and great experience. You will bring home good memories from there, it’s guaranteed! Thanks, Mr. Mathura, Kamal, and his wife (Dam, shame on me, I forget her name!!! Sorrrrry.) you have a diamond in your hand and you know how to make it shine. I will be back soon… I promise!

  • It’s been one the most wonderful trips I’ve ever done in my life. Kudos to the lady of the house, Tarun and his family. At first if I talk about the food, the vegetables are plucked fresh from the farm and then prepared with local spices and methods to give a relishing experience. This place is full of so much flora and fauna that one needs a guide book to identify bio species. Above all the HIMALAYAS. The views, the grandeur, the purity, the air and the climate it’s beyond words to explain. I’ll definitely visit Kaaphal again to have a lot more what they can offer; be it the motherly touch of the lady, the care they offer to a brat child like me and the wholesome experience. Thank you so much Kaaphal for being there!

  • Eco friendly place with special focus on birding and conservation of the local flaura and fauna. Countryside experience with warm hospitality. Basic furnishings but very clean, functional and hygienic. The location affords a great view of the Himalayas and has a nice trek in the backyard. Tarun is vastly experienced in adventure activities and enthusiastic about organising activities for individuals and groups. Had a good overnight stay and particularly enjoyed the local cuisine prepared by his mother.

    Ajay2020-02-04T00:00:00Z
  • The house is cozy with beautiful himalayan views from the rooms. The location is quite apt and near to the nearby markets and restaurants. Tarun himself is quite dedicated. Better be an early riser for lots of exotic birds visit the property in the morning. The food is very simple ( which i loved ) and basic. Aunty ji is quite fun too. One can see that have put in a lot of efforts to develop the ecology of their property and one must respect that. It is a fantastic place to just sit, view, read, meditate etc.

    Mayank2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • This is not just a place, its an ecosystem in itself, which you as guests can observe for endless hours. Tarun has created this place out of nowhere into a bird sanctuary. There were birds all around this place and I had never come so much closer to them before. Go definitely if you are a bird lover, nature enthusiast, love raw set up with basic amenities so that you feel connected to nature. Firstly about the location. Its a place Tarun created on the hills on the way from Berinag to Choukori. You'll not miss the board he has put up on the highway. Some may find the drive up to parking a bit tough due to terrain and height. Anyways, it was fine for my car. I happened to reach late, around dusk, but still could sense that this place was full of life around. Tarun took me around his place showing smaller ecosystems he had build for various birds. His knowledge on birds seems to be good ( I am not expert btw), but more importantly he seems to have the connect with them. The next morning he called close, literally close, a grey headed wookdpecker, which he called "Chintu". The bird seem to have confided into Tarun's place and was not at all scared of the guests. Apart from that we witnessed various other birds that he told have migrated from different parts. Amazing place to relax and watch the nature run by at this place. Tarun also organizes games/events and training exercises, which I found interesting. Lastly, food was also a feature with local veggies prepared by Tarun's mother, who's really a witty lady. She cracked a lot of jokes and never seemed like getting tired of the number of work she does. Amazing family to meet and superb location to stop by.

    Nikhil2019-12-28T00:00:00Z
  • If you are looking for a place far away from city chaos then Please visit at Tarun's place. Perfectly constructed and suitable for couples too. I loved the way he treated us.

    Sudeshna2019-12-23T00:00:00Z
  • when you are at kafal hills, you are nestled in a farm. Its a cozy hideout amidst the nature. Rooms were super clean with amazing views. Please leave your privilege behind and embrace the simplicity at its best. Tarun is an amazing host and his mother is the sweetest of all, We really enjoyed a freshly cooked meal by her. Communicate in advance about your arrival so that you get even better welcome. The place has a poor reception when it comes to mobile network which is another bliss. Go out, walk in the huge farm. Meet the animals, help out and enjoy the slow life on a farm

    Rajnish2019-12-09T00:00:00Z
  • If you love getting up to the chirping of birds and the buzz of bees, the intoxicating smell of the cattle, milk fresh from the cows and just being amidst raw nature, this is absolutely a place to be. Tarun and his family are a true example of pahadi hospitality, and more than make up for the slightly modest but cozy accommodation. The food is prepared from local produce from the garden and served in authentic Kumaoni style.. if you are up for some birding or a hike up to the waterfall, you will end up feeling you should have planned for a longer stay.. there are also adventure games for the kids and grownups.. all in all, if you are on the lookout for a genuine farmstay experience, go for it.

    Prasanna2019-11-03T00:00:00Z
  • Excellent farm stay. Tarun and his family were awesome hosts. Very warm and helpful. Food was truly homely and tasty. Had an extraordinary experience. Would highly recommend this place for all nature lovers

    Patal Bhuvaneshwar, Uttarakhand, India

This place is situated in far east district Champawat in Uttrakhand, bordering Nepal, in the midst of dense forest of Cedar, Rhododendron, Plums, Pear, Peach, Bay Berries etc.
It is a double story house built in a 700 sq metre space out of which only 200 sq metres have been used for the building. Rest is occupied by kitchen garden and some sorts of sitting spaces here and there. As this house is situated in a remote village surrounded by evergreen forests of oak, rhododendron and pine it attracts you to many trails leading to some forests in India and Nepal.
This property is situated in a small hamlet Chaikuni Pande comprising of eight families primarily
  • A life-changing experience. I am a solo traveler always looking for new experiences I can take home with me. The one at Forest First has been life changing for me. About the property: It's more than a homestay. Or a guesthouse. It felt like a home. And I am not at all exaggerating. Dinesh ji and his hospitality is something else only. It's a lavish house with a private room on the ground floor and a terrace room on first floor. The food cooked here is deliciously tasty and ridiculously cheap. There are several trails you can go on. All the ingredients are grown in his small farm. Be it lemon, mustard, corrionder. Dinesh ji loves cooking and will surprise you with his dishes every day. He loves experimenting them too. Watching him cook is a delight. And the love he pours in the food can be experienced by the way it tastes. I can talk on and on about the food and the place. But this review is not about that. It's more about what Dinesh ji is trying to do in this small humble village. He's trying to build a community of his own. A community that gives back to the society. A community that believes in making a difference. On my first day here, I met his friend Reggie who is staying with Dinesh ji for the past one month and taking time out to teach the local school kids here. Dinesh ji himself is involved when it comes to educating and empowering these kids. In fact, Reggie was soon going to visit Pilibhit forest and spend some time with the local tribes there to teach in the schools that are facing a tough time finding quality teachers. Dinesh ji is always on the lookout of people from various fields who don't mind spending some time in the woods and teaching kids as the kids mean a lot to him. It's been a life changing experience for me because I come from a city that never sleeps. I have been slogging for almost a decade now and haven't done anything that actually makes a difference. We all travel and the sole purpose of these travels is to have experiences that will move us. Well Dinesh ji will do just that. I am coming back to Forest First again. This time on a holiday with a purpose to spend more time with these kids. Inspire them in ways a school can't and help them lead a better lifestyle. After spending time and having endless conversations with Dinesh ji about how the small villages are suffering and how he's making a small difference to a small number of people, I have decided to dedicate some time from my life to make a difference and give back to the society and nature that has given us so much.

  • Delightful little place. If you've ever wondered what a small cottage in the woods would be like with most modern amenities this is the ideal location. I've always dreamt of a place like this and seeing it as reality makes me want to turn this dream into reality sooner. Dinesh is a wonderful host. Would definitely recommend

Perched at 1940 meters in the midst of pristine forest of oak, rhododendron, pine and deodar, Kot Naikana is a painstakingly renovated traditional Kumaoni house converted into a boutique homestay. While the exteriors reflect an old-world charm with stone walls and slated roof, yet its rooms are comfortable, homely with spacious en-suite bathrooms.
Soak in the crisp and fresh atmosphere, enjoy the delectable local cuisine, explore the forests on a walk, spot the ample birds, learn the rural way of life on a leisurely walk to the nearby village, capture the alluring views of snow caped peaks or just do nothing and immerse in the serenity. Kot Naikana offers everything a nature lover would yearn for.
Believed to be one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, Jageshwar Temple complex is just about 40 mins walk and 20 mins drive from our place. Historical town of Almora is about 1 hour drive away. We have curated various hikes / walks around Kot Naikana ranging from 1 hour leisurely stroll to a full day hike. Other unique activities include village visit and traditional meal at a local resident home.

Being at Jhaltola, is an experience - a soul revitalising stay in suites and cottages set amidst a 1000 acres of solitude. The offbeat location offers unmatched seclusion, home like food, a panoramic Himalayan view, and tens of walks among forests rich in flora, and fauna, including over 150 recorded bird species that make background music while you soak in the silence. Ambika and I, have made this our home, and we love to share this blessing with offbeat travellers and nature lovers.
The suite is perfect for a family of 2 plus 2. It has a spacious bedroom with sit in space and an attached room with bunk beds for kids. There is a garden with furniture to relax and soak in the sun. IF YOU PLAN TO STAY FOR A MINIMUM OF 3 NIGHTS, ASK US FOR A SPECIAL OFFER.
Jhaltola Village, where we are at, is an erstwhile estate owned by Rai Bahadur Kishan Singh Rawat, who worked under the British for The Trignometric Survey as a spy explorer and conducted multiple expeditions into Tibet, China and Mangolia. The estate is now owned by his descendants. Now a part of this has been converted into a retreat. And quite appropriately, it took us almost a decade of active exploration all over Kumaon Himalayas before finalising this space as our home, workplace, and little haven. The place has been set up in association with the descendants of Rai Bahadur Kishan Singh. You can visit the nearby villages, go for a trek to the Shiv temple on top of the mountain, enjoy birding and walks within and around the estate, have a riverside picnic at Baans Pathan, visit a nearby NGO Aavni, experience the cave temple at Patal Bhuvaneshwar or simply sit on a garden bench and enjoy the place. There is lots to do here and a good many reasons to do nothing at all and just relax.
  • It was the best decision I made. Celebrating new year in beautiful, serene, peaceful and exotic place like Jhaltola village. Madhur and Ambika have created this place with all the love. Their love for nature is visible in small small things all around the resort. Rags is very adorable but my pooch baby is a brat, so they didn’t get along. But my dog OSCAR too thoroughly enjoyed this trip. I still have the taste of pickles and jams made by Ambika. I ate hazardous quantities of pickles and jams for the first time ever in my lifetime. Their food is super delicious, at such an altitude, with scarcity of resources deserves an ovation. Their kitchen is sparkling clean and food was super delicious and lip smacking. The cottages, the place, the hospitality everything was up to the mark. Coming back for sure.

  • It was my husband, myself and our 3 legged boy Sirius. I don't know how we decided to come here. But come we did, and God willing will return again. The time it took us from Delhi was about 13-14 hrs. We reached in the evening after sunset, and it was really chilly. Madhur and team greeted us and didn't let us do a thing. Madhur even took Sirius from me so I could negotiate the uneven ground better. Hot hot tea and pakoras followed..we rested that day and were served dinner in our room. The room! Wowza! It was luxury, to us. We have traveled a lot in the mountains and this room would fit right into a magazine. Warm, cosy, huuuge, with a heater, hot water, good internet connection, extra bunk beds in case you have kids, cosy couches...u name it. It was so elegant..the furnishings were extremely chic. Durable too. We were tired and slept like warm logs. Next day we were so excited to open our curtains and lo and behold, there were the Mighty Himalayas. Imagine your mind being blown first thing in the morning. Then we were served yummy masala chai... Breakfast and lunch, like dinner, were feasts! Well thought out, carefully planned and perfectly executed meals delighted us throughout our stay. No request was too big for these guys. The food was fresh and the ingredients tasted like they ought to. The food is simple and yet you want more and more. There's no continental food here because see, in the mountains, it's traditional to gorge on Maggi and pakoras! And lots of tea. Give fancy food a break. It’s said that you can change the world by just being warm and kind. I do believe that's true and hence Madhur and Ambika are well on their way to making the world a better place to live in. It was so much fun hanging out with them. Also they are so warm and huggable. Go on I dare you! Their daughter will keep u entertained by singing all day and their dog (female) Rags and my boy were smitten with each other. They played all day..in fact my boy wandered off and got lost one day and it was Ambika and Rags who found him..for that I'm forever grateful. There are bonfires to keep you warm. There's good food. The best view. The forest. The birds. The milky way at night. The best crew ever. Ambika makes the best pickles and preserves and squash!! This is apart from regular food and tasty treats for us, out of the blue! Do get some of her homemade stuff to take with you for back home. Shop for Avani products which they sell to support the NGO. I could go on and on. But I'm out of words. All I know is I'm glad I went for 5- 6 days, and not less. I also know next time I will go for longer. Departing felt like leaving a second home and dear friends, who you feel like you have known forever. Lots of love and hugs Madhur and Ambika , we will return soon. Nikhil and Sweta. P.S.: Sirius pines for Rags. Much love.

  • Highly recommended for those who want a magnificent view of the himalayas, with peace and comfort. All amenities you could want are available; devoted hosts and staff and great conversations! It is a home being shared generously and a natural space very well cared for. We were lucky to be there.

Being at Jhaltola, is an experience - a soul revitalising stay in suites and cottages set amidst a 1000 acres of solitude. The location offers unmatched seclusion, home like food, a panoramic Himalayan view, and tens of walks among forests rich in flora, and fauna, including over 150 recorded bird species that make background music while you soak in the silence. Ambika and I, have made this our home, and we love to share this blessing with offbeat travellers and nature lovers.
The location of the retreat was selected after almost a decade of travelling in the Kumaon Himalayas. It has been designed in a way that helps the guest in making most of the fabulous location. We treat our guests as our personal guests and take great pride in the home like food and the simple genuine hospitality that we offer. If you are looking for a serene holiday with your loved ones, it will keep you coming back for more. IF YOU PLAN TO STAY FOR A MINIMUM OF 3 NIGHTS, ASK US FOR A SPECIAL OFFER.
Jhaltola Village, where we are at, is an erstwhile estate owned by Rai Bahadur Kishan Singh Rawat, who worked under the British (1867-1885) for The Trignometric Survey as a spy explorer and conducted multiple expeditions into Tibet, China and Mangolia. The estate is now owned by his descendants. And quite appropriately, it took us almost a decade of active exploration all over Kumaon Himalayas before finalising this space as our home, workplace, and little haven. The retreat has been set up in association with the descendants of Rai Bahadur Kishan Singh. There is lots to do at Misty and a good many reasons to do nothing at all and just relax.
  • This is a fab place to stay and experience nature at its most sublime. With a variety of birds and the occasional barking Deer on the soundtrack one is transported to innocent times of man and nature. Also don't forget to take the walk to the magical sunset point.

  • If you are looking for an offbeat location to relax for few days, you cant choose anything better than Misty Mountains. Nature has done so much for this place and then Madhur & Ambika added their unique touch. Be it the scenic views of the Kumaon ranges, the cosyness in the wooden cottage, or Ambika's mouth-watering jams and achaars and Rags's playful nature -everything added to the charm of the place. Five of us who had booked a cottage for 3D & 2N had one of the most amazing times there. Infact we are planning to return soon.

  • Madhur’s Place is one of the best I have been to. Huge, beautiful, comfortable cottages here. The service levels are exceptional and beat many established brands and homestays. Every single member of the staff deserves praise for going out of the way in making guests comfortable. The property is stunning, beautiful and excellently maintained. The food is a winner - home style food but extremely delicious and had lot of variety. Ambika’s friendly hosting deserves another thumbs up from our group. We would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a solitude in the hills - Family’s and groups as well as couples
