Places to stay in Pipiriki
Bush Hill Cottage, on Bush Hill Farm, is the perfect place to take a break and forget the stresses of life or use as a base to try the many activities in our beautiful Ruapehu district. We are close to Tongariro National Park and Whanganui River where your adventures can begin. Our place is great for couples, solo adventurers, and families with children.
Bush Hill Cottage is a great place to take time out from your busy schedule, relax and enjoy rural New Zealand. Our little cottage has a good sized kitchen/dining room with an excellent wood burning fire to keep everyone warm and there are restful views out the kitchen window while doing the dishes. The kitchen is equipped with a stove, fridge/freezer, crockery, cutlery, cooking utensils, bowls, pots & pans and baking dishes. We also have tea, coffee, sugar, milk, salt, pepper & cooking oil for your convenience. The bedroom has a single bed and a set of bunks(very popular with the younger guests!) while the double bed is in the lounge. All bed linen and towels are provided. The cottage is in a paddock so the only immediate neighbours you may have are sheep, cows or a horse. There is a lovely bush walk near our house or, time and weather permitting, we offer a farm experience for you to see a small part of farm life. There is a charge for this experience. Our local towns of Raetihi and Ohakune have fascinating histories – farming, timber milling, railway, 1918 fires, market gardening, ski industry development so hire a bike and check them out. Raetihi is about 10 minutes drive from us and Ohakune is 20 minutes away. Both have information centres and free Wifi at the libraries. We are about half way between Mt Ruapehu and the Whanganui River and both offer plenty of options – hiking, camping, biking, jet boating, canoeing or skiing in winter. Pipiriki, on the Whanganui River, is 35 minutes drive away and from there you can take a jet boat to the famous “Bridge to Nowhere” in the Mangapurua Valley. Canoe trips can also be organised or cycle through the Mangapurua to be collected by jet boat at the river. Explore in the Tongariro National Park with many treks for all levels of fitness and experience. The most famous hike is the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, with “Mt Doom”, only 1 hour from us. In winter the Turoa and Whakapapa skifields on Mt Ruapehu can be enjoyed. Opportunities for mountain biking in the Ruapehu region are many and varied from easy tracks for first timers to downhill daring rides. If trout fishing is your passion, there are a number of magnificent fishing sites on rivers and streams including the Manganui o te Ao River and Mangawhero River. There are also museums, art galleries, numerous cafes and restaurants for your enjoyment. So what ever your preference when taking a break, we would love to see you at Bush Hill Cottage.
Our area is special with its stunning natural beauty alongside farming activities, Maori and European history that we are keen to share with travellers.
  • A seriously charming farm cottage in the country. A crisp early autumn night among the cows and stars. Cathy was quite hospitable and even had fresh baked cookies for us. The cottage was spotless. We slept well and would happily return any time!

  • What can I say? The cutest farm cottage in the middle of fields, cows and horses. It really is the best place to disconnect and take in 100% nature and farm-life. The tour around the farm made our stay extra special during the day and the endless sky and millions of stars were a perfect second act during the night. Absolutely recommended!

  • This is a comfortable and spacious cottage. Very quiet and excellently placed for anyone going to Pipiriki to do a Whanganui River adventure, or keen to drive the River Road to Whanganui. Cathy and Mike are a great source of informatio and great hosts.

  • Cathy is a wonderful host, very friendly and helpful with her recommendations. The Cottage is absolutely quiet, we loved the old house and the stars on the sky at night.

  • Great place to stay if you're looking for peace and quiet and to get away from the hustle and bustle. Cathy is very easy to communicate with, and to talk to in person. We really enjoyed the flapjacks that she baked for us!

    Phong2020-01-12T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing if you want to have a time with nature :) Cathy is very kind !

    Carole2020-01-11T00:00:00Z
  • The farm cottage is 100% what it is advertising. A cosy cottage on a farm! We loved our four night stay here lot. Being in the middle of all the sheep and birds etc. is amazing. The location is tranquality par excellence. On top comes the view to Mount Ruapehu on clear days:-) and a close proximity to all highlights (Tongariro NP and Whanganui NP). All in all a wonderful experience with a super nice host Cathy we enjoyed chatting with a lot!

    Norbert2020-01-07T00:00:00Z

Gazing over the Ruapehu plateau is KUBO - our newly built little house on a hill. We offer our bespoke private guest suite called “Fantail Suite”. Enjoy coffee from the lounge at sunrise, relax in bed as the sun sets or stargaze from the deck on a beautiful night. Located between Tongariro and Whanganui National Parks. A short drive to Turoa and Whakapapa ski fields yet outside the ‘busyness’ of ski town Ohakune. Ideal for a solo adventurer or a couple. NO CLEANING FEES.
The 25sqm Fantail Suite is perfect for a couple but can sleep 4 people max if required. The suite is the first you will see as you park atop the hill. It is connected to the main house but has its own separate, private entrance. The suite’s private deck has partial mountain views and no light pollution - ideal for stargazing on a beautiful night. From here you enter straight to an open lounge and a small kitchenette with limited facilities – a mini fridge, microwave, toaster, kettle, and plug-in electric single hotplate – suitable for light meal preparations. We also have coffee, sugar, tea, salt and pepper for your convenience. The bedroom has a king size bed with electric blanket and is separated with full height sliding partition that you can open up if you prefer a more open space. The king bed is set up as sleeping 2 is the most comfy arrangement. The ensuite bathroom has gas-heated water so you won’t run out of hot water. The suite is fully insulated with double glazed windows and doors, a large 14-fin oil heater is available. Fresh linen and towels are provided and plenty of books and board games to pass the time. The loft with low railing accessible by ladder from the lounge, has a single floor mattress to accommodate 1 person but not suitable to a child. The lounge has a sofa bed to accommodate 1 person as well. Beddings/linen/towels will be provided for the sofa bed and loft mattress if you book for the 3rd and 4th person. Enjoy views of rural life in surrounding hills and paddocks from all windows and glass doors. You might even see people hauling logs or cutting firewood from time to time especially during summer. Unfortunately being on top of a hill with steep slopes, the suite is NOT suitable for young kids.
A minute drive to our small rural town's main street with two cafes, a four square grocery, a dairy, an Information Centre, a museum, an Art Gallery, petrol station and the South Hemisphere’s oldest picture theatre. The Waimarino Rodeo is held in Raetihi every March and is the oldest continuing running rodeo in New Zealand and home to one of New Zealand's oldest grandstands. Across the road from the grandstand is Mangatepopo River Walk.
  • De place is beautifull! Great view and great place for stargazing. The driveway up was doable with our small campervan, but not comfortable.

  • Anton and Frances’s place is probably the most tasteful Airbnb we have ever stayed at. It is thoughtfully furnished, including a huge, comfortable bed. The place was sparkling clean and check-in was easy. Communication with the hosts was easy; they answered quickly and reliably. We almost regretted that we only stayed for a night.

    Dania2020-03-07T00:00:00Z

  • A lovely cosy cottage. We had a beautiful autumn stay, can't wait to try this place again in the winter !

    Kat2020-03-22T00:00:00Z
  • This place was beautiful, that we had to book extra nights, the cabin was sparkly clean, it's everything you need in a nice winter's day, even though we booked during the end of summer lol I would definitely come back during winter. Beautiful location

    Tauryn2020-03-17T00:00:00Z
  • This place is exactly what you see in the photos and more, I had my 3month old boy and partner and it definitely delivered, we actually had to book another couple nights , from the beautiful view, which I believe is Mt ruapehu, which is right outside the cabin, to the beautiful locals at ohakune, the highlight for me was the bathtub outside, looking out to the mount and star gazing. The best, cheers Suzi

    Tauryn2020-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • Excellent! This is a delightful log cabin close to the centre of Okahune. Everything works well and the patio is particularly nice featuring an open air bath! If skiing, this place works very well. Definitely recommended.

  • The hostel is clean and well cared for, rooms are well organised with crisp clean linen and bedcovers, clothes hooks and stools. The bathrooms are close to the bedrooms, clean and practical. Corridors and common spaces are clean and well organised, with cubes for food in the kitchen and a good system for sorting and labelling food. I didn't have food with me but I did see the arrangements. Jane is welcoming and a clear communicator. The hostel is in a good spot and is set in a pleasant garden with an interesting view over the railway lines, typical NZ railway houses to bush covered hills. There is plenty of car parking space. I was there in summer so no need of the spa which was under repair, or the facilities for skiers to dry their gear etc. It's the easiest, cleanest hostel I've stayed in in NZ. I was there to attend a party nearby, and leave the next day but I'm sure a longer stay would be awesome. Highly recommended.

  • We really enjoyed our stay at Annie's. Perfect location for exploring Ruapehu! Right in the heart of Ohakune. We came down during summertime to do the unmarked Ruapehu Crater Hike. We had a great time. Annie's has everything you need for a good stay, a well-equipped kitchen which we used to cook dinners, a cosy bed, hot shower, comfortable lounge with TV and sound system and also we could see there was a great space for drying ski / snow equipment. Really close to a fantastic New World in Ohakune too! Annie was also really quick to communicate with us. Thanks Annie!

The Treehouse is set on stilts into the trees, with a walk way for ease of access. A warm well insulated room with comfortable king size bed, around the deck to the shower, toilet and out door bath. All linen provided. Gas hot water so no running out!
Hidden away and very secluded in amongst the trees the perfect place to unwind and get away from it all. listen to the birds singing in the trees, hear the rustles and bark of the possums at night, whilst safely tucked up in your lovely warm bed. Lay in a hot bubble bath with the glistening stars above and the twinkling lights of the mountain ahead as you relax away after your day of adventures in our wilderness play ground.
Raetihi is situated only 11km from Ohakune and 29km from the Turoa ski fields, snow shuttles operate from the town. Also easy access to Whakapa and Tongariro crossing. There are also numerous mountain bike tracks in the area. Raetihi is famous for having the widest street in the country, the most photographed church, the oldest theatre, built in 1915 and heaps of history around the logging industry. Our own Villa was built in 1880 and is one of the oldest buildings in the town. Head down the ‘river” road to Pipiriki to catch the jet boat up the river to the bridge to no where, (bookings required) or continue on to Jerusalem and then London, just past London you’ll find a restored water wheel that used to be used grind flour for the region. Heading north you’ll find the viaduct, which carry’s the Wellington to Auckland overlander daily and is a stunning sight at sun set. A little further on is the famous railway spiral that takes the train up the steep incline to get up to the central plateau. Of course there’s the mountain to explore in winter or at any other time, with fabulous walks and if you’re looking for a four x four adventure there are plenty of options for this too. We have a great information centre in Raetihi that can provide you with all the information you need for the region.

  • The treehouse is a lovely spot! Very relaxing, and in a great location. The room was very clean, and the outdoor tub was amazing! Close to the national parks and downtown Raetihi is very cute. We stopped by their cafe Angel Louise, and had a great coffee.

    Nicole2020-01-20T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay at the treehouse was a wonderful and unique experience. It is a quiet and cosy place to get some rest from daily life and to enjoy the nature nearby. Gary and Lyn are very friendly hosts who both took care of all our concerns and respected our privacy. We would like to come back anytime!

  • This place went above and beyond our expectations. Upon leaving, my boyfriend proclaimed it was the best Airbnb he’s ever stayed in. Location was lovely (about a 30 min drive from National Park Village), the view was unparalleled, and the place had all the amenities we could hope for and then some. Words and pictures don’t do this place justice, so come check it out for yourselves.

  • An amazing lodge with lots of space and awesome facilities. Highly recommend for anyone wanting to get away!

    Jordan2020-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • We recommend this place. A very private amazing log cabin with a perfect view of the mountain and amazing sunrise. We stayed one night on our way south. I imagine it’s a great place for a larger group in the ski season. Whatever time of the year it’s lovely and in an area with lots to do. We took the long road to Whanganui and went on the jet boat to the Bridge to Nowhere. Recommend that as well. The place is spotlessly clean. Thankyou Deborah.

    Carolyn2020-02-28T00:00:00Z
  • You wont believe this place! Beautiful log cabin with everything you could need for a great stay. It’s very roomy, has a great view of the volcano, a lovely deck to hang out on, and of course, the hot tub! We wish there were more of us because it would be so fun to share!

  • The log lodge is a unique and beautiful place to stay. The view from the property is stunning. The hosts were excellent communicators and very hospitable to us during our stay. Great place to stay if you are spending any time in Tongariro National Park. Would highly recommend!

  • Lovely place, lovely location, lovely host! Very well worth visiting, great for families, great as a basecamp to explore mordor. The images don't quite reflect how awesome this location actually is. We will absolutely be back!

    Monika2020-01-09T00:00:00Z
  • Great stay experience. Exceeded our expectations :)

    Ella2020-01-04T00:00:00Z
  • The photos and descriptions don't even do this place justice. Pros: So much space and character! The communal sleeping area in the lofts are so cute, this whole lodge could possibly sleep up to 12 people: 1 queen master bedroom with ensuite, 1 queen bedroom, 4 x single beds and 2 x queen beds in the communal sleeping area lofts. Huge kitchen and walk-in pantry, 2 dining areas, 2 lounges, and a huge deck with a gorgeous view of Mt. Ruapehu. As for bathrooms, there's an ensuite in the master bedroom and the others are downstairs: 1 x toilet and shower, 1 x toilet, 1 x shower. Useful extras were laundry room, cleaning and cooking supplies, BBQ, toiletries, books, board games and lots of towels, sheets and blankets. My favourite thing was the amount of privacy we had. The lodge was up a mountain (about 1 minute drive up) and the hosts stayed in the Kindling Cottage below. Cons: Because we were there during the summertime there were so many bugs!!! You just have to be mindful of closing all the windows, doors and turning off all the lights by the time the sun went down otherwise, they will all be drawn to the lodge. The house, being made of wood, makes a lot of creaking noises (which gave the space a little bit of a creepy haunted house feel- so fun!) but it was a little annoying at night when we were trying to sleep. Water pressure was very gentle and the water temperature would change if the tap was also going at the same time. They have a very cute vintage stereo that still takes CD's and cassette tapes but also has the option for an aux cord, so I would recommend bringing an aux or your own speaker if you're planning to listen to some music. Overall such a wonderful place! We will 100% be back and will be recommending this place to all my friends and family. (:

Private Ski Club, in a beautiful quiet park nestled in with other ski lodges, easy walking distance to the town centre through Ohakune's famous Carrot park. Great stop over between Wellington and Auckland or just to relax and enjoy the beautiful mountain village. Ohakune has great food and coffee and beautiful walks around the area or watch the sunset on the mountain.

  • NSL was a lovely location, and the stay was very comfortable. The location is perfect - not so central that it's noisy, but not remote either. Steffie showed the lovely little stroll to the town center. The space was spotless, and there were all the usual amenities like spices and tea and coffee, all the little things that make for a lovely stay. Steffie is just lovely. Very kind, very helpful, and a pleasure to chat with. I would definitely go again.

  • Huge common area with very good equipped kitchen. Rooms are small but enough place for a bed and separate wardrobe. The only thing that bothered us was that you cannot lock your private room. However we recommed to stay in this lovely house.

The bonus perhaps was being able to buy a snack - cake and coffee or venison sandwich with hot chips - and it is delivered on a tray to your tent. Crazy service in the back of beyond. Try it.

Relax in this cozy chalet with nature as your backyard. The deck leads onto a large private grassed reserve and has stunning, unobstructed mountain views. Inside, you’ll find charming spaces ideal for relaxing, or exploring the dramatic scenery of this alpine region. Located in Turoa Village, you’re a five-minute walk from Ohakune’s infamous carrot, playground and bike park as well as Ohakune town centre. Filled with restaurants, cafes & galleries, Ohakune is a great place to explore.
The Turoa mountain access road is less than ten minutes drive away so if you’re here for the snow, you can be on the mountain enjoying your first run in no time! For summer or walking stays, shuttles are available that will pick you up and drop off to the Tongariro Crossing and drop you back at the end of the day. Inside, the spacious mezzanine bedroom is set up to sleep five with one double bed, one single and a set of single bunk beds, making it perfect for families or small groups. Downstairs, a sofa bed can sleep a further two guests. However, this is a cosy space so we don’t recommend more than five people staying at any one time. A portacot and mattress is also available in the mezzanine bedroom if required. One tv and DVD player downstairs and one tv and DVD player upstairs. Upstairs is also a hamper of children’s toys for the rainy days. There is a collection of DVDs for adults and children and some books. Feel free to take a book with you, but please replace it with another one. While we love hosting families, please be aware that this home may not be suitable for very young children due to the stairs and mezzanine bedroom. Downstairs, a compact kitchen includes an oven, fridge, microwave and all the essentials including basics such as oil, tea, coffee, salt and pepper etc. The large bathroom is designed to include drying racks. Out the back is a small, covered area which is great for those wet boots, bikes and snow gear. There is a designated parking space marked where guests must park during busy times. Please remember to bring towels. All bed linen is provided, with the linen washing fee included in the cleaning fee per stay. Linen includes mattress protectors, sheets, pillows, duvets, duvet covers and blankets. All linen is hygienically laundered and changed after every stay.
Ohakune town centre is a short walk away; restaurants, bars, shops, supermarket, playgrounds, mountain access, bike and walking tracks.

  • This place is a lovely cosy house. Plenty of room and large comfy beds. The place is heavily set up for winter and would definately keep you warm, however in summer the house can get a little stuffy. That is probably because I'm not used to the high humidity though! My only issue is that the stairs are a little small, but in saying this there is lots of room downstairs for those uncomfortable with climbing up and down the stairs. Either way, super impressed with the house, hospitality and things that were provided. Would love to come again and recommend it to everyone.

    Michael2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • This chalet has a great hot tub and the house stays very warm even when it’s cold outside. The hosts were super responsive when we had a request. Thanks for letting us stay in your chalet !

  • We had a great stay at the log cabin . There is a pond and land behind the cabin that was great to sit in on hot days with a picnic blanket . We made good use of the charcoal bbq and spa , which is a great addition for the location . There are games and a particularly hard puzzle that we couldn’t quite finish. The log cabin was quite warm overnight which was great . Hosts were very receptive and helpful thanks for a great stay

Our neighbourhood is very friendly, peaceful and tranquil. Perfect for recharging the batteries. Raetihi is itself an historic town with it's own museum, cafes and a few local shops. We are only a few minutes drive from Ohakune and the ski fields in winter or alternatively right on the edge of the national park. There are also plenty of beautiful rivers for those that like to fish.

  • Jenny’s place in Raetihi is very worth to stay! The setting is lovely and we were able to sit outside in the evening for supper and sunset! There were many nice touches to make us feel welcome, a bowl of fresh fruit, cookies and plenty of food for a good breakfast. From the living room and both double bedrooms you have the fantastic view to Mt Ruapehu and from all rooms you can watch the animals. The Tongariro-Nationalpark is reachable in about half an hour. Special treats were home baked bread, the hot tub after long days in the forest, and view of the Southern Cross right out the front door at night! Richard is a great and friendly host, we recommend this place to anyone looking for a quite, comfortable getaway!

Cozy Lockwood house between town and junction. Beautiful in summer, and utterly special next to the wood burner on a winter's evening. Not to mention the heatpump and the front deck spa! Fenced back garden for kids and pets. Large covered deck for bikes and skis/boards. Towel and bed linen provided. This was a working home until recently. It’s clean and comfy but not perfect: some of my stuff is still there, the bathroom is clean but tired and the sofa lumpy. If you want a hotel, book one!
Outdoor living decks and a front-row view of the mountain. Peaceful, landscaped backyard with mountain stream at the boundary. All with complete home comforts including washer and dryer.
That view. Walk to town. Walk to Junction. Walk to cool river swimming hole. 500m to mountain road.
  • We had a lovely stay at Andy’s. The view of the mountain from the Jacuzzi was stunning. A perfect spot for a getaway with friends/family.

  • I literally cannot reccommend this place enough. How amazing! From the view, to the spa, to the little fire pit, but the best part was being allowed to have our dog with us! We can't wait to come back in Winter when it shows! I didn't want to leave! The most relaxing time away I have had in a long time. Thankyou so much ♡

  • Nice room. Cozy. Just as described and as you can see in the pictures. We had to wait in front of the house for a little while because no one was home. We booked the place quite spontaneously/ last minute. And Kira herself was away traveling. That's probably why check-in was not quite perfect. No big deal though.

  • Shona’s place was great. We ended up in a tight spot due to some weather issues on our northern crossing trek and had to book her place without much notice. She was very welcoming. Very responsive and easy to get in touch with. Her place was clean and tidy. The beds were comfortable with flannel sheets as an added bonus 😍. She left us bread and some other essentials in the kitchen. We were able to walk to town for dinner and groceries. We had great views of the mountain from the street. She even offered us a little extra time in the morning if we needed it before leaving. Truly wonderful place, amazing host, great location and will be back to stay again!
