Places to stay in Marykirk
Traditional & relaxed B&B in the 16th century Scottish tower wing of our family home. 2 bedrooms for 4 people over two floors with large bathroom and small sitting room with tv. Full breakfast included.
The castle dates from the 13th century and is full of original features but has been extensively improved for modern living! It is an excellent location for exploring the area or for business in Aberdeen or even a wedding at one of the excellent local venues. The property is about 45 minutes’ drive south of Aberdeen off the main A90. Edinburgh is 2 hours to the south. Royal Deeside is about 20 minutes away, across the Cairn O’Mount pass. Our main guest room is a bright room, overlooking parkland, on the second floor of the L-shaped tower built in 1531. It has a superking sized bed and there is plenty of storage with a wardrobe & chest of drawers. A cosy sitting room with TV is adjacent. Up a further flight of the impressive stone spiral stair is the bathroom and a further guest room, with twin beds. The bathroom, for exclusive use by guests, has a power shower and bath. All linen, towels and basic toiletries will be provided. Duvets and pillows are feather/down, but synthetic may be available. A hairdryer is available, as well as an iron & ironing board. There are tea and coffee making facilities and a fridge with ice box. White waffle weave robes can be used for the short walk between the bedrooms and bathroom. On the ground floor is a Billiard room with full sized billiard / snooker table and selection of board games which guests are welcome to use by separate arrangement. On inclement days or chilly evenings we would be happy to light a fire. A full breakfast is provided in our dining room, depending on requirements. A selection of cereals, fruit juices and yoghurt are all available, with home made bread and preserves. A simple cooked breakfast can be provided. For larger parties there are other rooms available by arrangement. Reasonable Wi-Fi is available throughout the house limited in places by the thickness of the walls!
The house is located in a tranquil and quiet rural setting midway between the villages of Fettercairn and Laurencekirk in the fertile farming area of the Howe of the Mearns. River and woodland walks are on the door step Fettercairn has an award winning distillery with visitor centre. Slightly further afield over the Cairn O'Mount road, is Royal Deeside with Balmoral Castle and other attractions. The property is not far from the coastal towns of Stonehaven, Catterline, Johnshaven and Montrose. There are superb beaches at St Cyrus. The nearest golf courses are in Edzell, Auchenblae, Montrose and Stonehaven. Carnoustie and St Andrews are within an hour’s drive. There is an abundance of walks and cycling for all abilities and interests on our doorstep. The coast to coast walk from Fort William passes through Glen Esk en route to Montrose. The area has a number of excellent hotels, restaurants and coffee shops for eating out.
  • Such a fantastic weekend away in a Castle! Hosts went above and beyond to ensure the stay was wonderful. Loved the tour of the castle, our room, a great breakfast both continental and cooked. Made good use of the games room and enjoyed coming back to a fire of an evening. Hosts were easy to talk to, and quick responses through airbnb when I messaged. I can imagine it would be so beautiful in the summer time and hope we can return so we can get out in the gardens.

  • What an amazing place❤️

    Dave2020-03-19T00:00:00Z
  • The Tower is an amazing venue, and Dag had left a fully stocked fridge with gin and whisky included! Although the weather was wet and windy (Storm Dennis was raging outside) the tower was warm and comfortable. The downstairs kitchen/sitting room/dining room was very comfortable with amazing views and the copper bath in the upstairs bathroom was a very nice touch. We weren't that impressed by Montrose, but there are plenty of places nearby to visit and we had a very enjoyable weekend. We hope to return when the weather is better.

    Briony2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • The most amazing space, every detail has been thought of and we felt immediately at home. Dag welcomed us with a wee dram of whisky then gave us a brief tour before leaving us to our own devices. Could not recommend highly enough!

    Georgie2020-02-10T00:00:00Z
  • Dag's place is amazing and he couldn't have been more helpful. He even sent on the bits we left behind. Difficult to find fault with anything.

    Gareth2020-01-21T00:00:00Z
  • The tower is exceptional! What an amazing place and Dag is equally as great a host. We had everything we needed for a very memorable New Years. We’ll certainly be back!

    Arthur2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • Dag was a Superhost. Excellent communication, quick and easy check in, lovely comfortable accommodation. Would highly recommend!

    Louise2019-12-29T00:00:00Z
  • From the very first interaction with Dag, I knew this was the place for us (young couple celebrating a birthday + our French Bulldog). The property is amazing, you will not want to leave! Any plans you have may get swept to one side if you are staying here, you will get suckered in by its warmth and charm. We did not turn on the TV once as there were so many more interesting things to do/read/look at. The feeling of peace and tranquility even overtook our dog, who would rather sleep in the bed that Dag provided over his own! Everything we could wish for was provided, and more. A magnificent property with a wonderful host, 10/10, 5 stars. We are already thinking of an excuse to visit again. Thanks again, Dag!

    Georgina2019-12-17T00:00:00Z
  • Exceptional host and property. Highly recommend this beautiful unique property. Thoroughly spoiled by the host with kind little touches and hospitality. We will return for sure. Place was spotless and we had everything we needed to hand . Bed was so so comfortable and the old vintage bath was amazing. Everyone should experience this fantastic place.

Newly renovated 1 bed apartment. This compact modern style property is a ground floor flat with en-suite shower room and living room with kitchenette. The living space is fully furnished with sofa bed, TV, DVD player, electric LED fire and dining table. Free WIFI, microwave, iron and hairdryer all included. The property is perfectly located within a 3 min walk to town centre and train station. Breakfast roll and coffee/tea also included with this airbnb from local subway restaurant 4 min walk.
This is the perfect cosy space for any couple visiting the area on holiday or for the weekend. Also ideal for work related travel. 3 minute walk from the train station and town centre. We would recommend a maximum of 3 adult guests as the apartment is quite small. However the space could accommodate 2 adults and 2 children.
Close enough to walk to the local amenities but far enough away from the town centre to avoid noise, this cosy apartment is in a quiet area with easy access to the main roads.
  • Easy access, good location, simple, clean, good sleep. Altogether a nice place.

    p2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • Forbes place is terrific if visiting Montrose. Located close to town but very quiet a perfect place to stay.

    Jodi2020-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • The apartment is well located for the town centre but the on street parking can be a bit tight at times. The space is quite compact as described but Forbes has made the best of the available space and provided all that you would need for a few days away. Everything was lovely and clean with fresh smelling bedding and towels.

    Sarah2020-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • It's cheap, cheerful, cute and good quality. The perfect little base for an East Scotland coastal getaway!

    Oliver2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • Stayed in Forbes place for a second time. Lovely home, close to centre main street in Montrose. Ideal location. Would definitely stay again and recommend.

    Ethan2020-02-13T00:00:00Z
  • Clean, cosy and comfortable apartment. A few minutes walk to shops, the beach and an interesting little museum. Very easy check in and out via friendly staff at the local Subway restaurant. Amazing value that a free breakfast at Subway is included each day! We would highly recommend this accommodation and will definitely stay here again when we are in the area.

    Laura2020-02-08T00:00:00Z
  • Stayed at Forbes' place during a work visit to Montrose in February. Very clean on arrival, homely feel to the house. Perfect space for a single person or couple. Will be staying again and would happily recommend.

    Ethan2020-02-05T00:00:00Z
  • Forbes' place is very much as advertised. Very clean. Very comfortable bed. Excellent kitchen facility. Very convenient to town. We loved relaxing there and watching the TV after spending most of the daylight hours out on the beach.

  • A beautiful and charming place. Caravan with all the arrangements (nothing is missing) We will definitely go back there!

    Marta2019-12-26T00:00:00Z
  • The accommodation was big and clean. The heating worked fast, so it was very pleasant. What I personally less liked: it is a Karavan (as you can see in the photo), but I have imagined it more like a beach cottage (have already spent many in such a). Also, the Karavan was with many such others in a Karavan Park behind the city and not (as one might expect) rather on the beach. The city is very boring and to my taste quite uninviting and drab. However, there is a great bakery and the beach is beautiful and perfect for long walks.

    Elena2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • The caravans are very clean and stylish and in a lovely location . Stuart is a very nice person and very approachable

    Peter2019-10-04T00:00:00Z
  • St Cyrus is a lovely location the beach is amazing, our toddler twins and dogs loved it. Chalet is very clean and has everything you need. The shower was great, and plenty cooking essentials. A dog run area to let them off the lead was fab, and the grounds were clean and not over crowded which really suited us. Great short stay overall.

    Lorraine2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful dog friendly caravan in a lovely location. The site is very clean and spacious, and everyone we spoke to was friendly. Bonus was the dog run at the back of the site! It was great to be able to walk down to the beach and local shop, and explore the area. We’ll definitely be back again soon! Thank you for having us x

Do visit our local pub just a short walk from the cabin, a former coaching Inn built in the 1800's with a beer garden serving food daily and pet friendly too. There is so much to see and do around this beautiful part of Scotland, you won't want to leave. We look forward to meeting you and will give a warm welcome when you arrive at our holiday home.

  • We had a perfect family weekend away at Lorna's lodge. The location is fabulous, with beautiful views. Lots of different things to do and places to see nearby (recommend Lunan Bay - beautiful). Lodge itself was clean and had everything you would require. The hot tub area outside is also beautifully done. Overall great stay and we will be back!

    Gillian2020-01-19T00:00:00Z
  • Lorna's Cabin is in an excellent location with a great view over the surrounding countryside. It is peaceful, yet easy to reach local amenities and attractions. The cabin itself is of a very high standard, very well furnished with stylish touches all around. We found it a very relaxing stay, aided by the hot tub which was very clean and well maintained. We would highly recommend a stay at Lorna's cabin, and hope to return in the future.

Close to beautiful St Cyrus beach and convenient for Montrose and Stonehaven, you’ll love staying in our room, overlooking the garden.
St Cyrus is just ten minutes from Montrose and twenty minutes from Stonehaven. Our cottage overlooks the church and Victorian school and is on the edge of the nature reserve, with its beautiful sandy white beach. With traditional cottage decor and lovely views throughout the year of the garden, we offer a quiet space to relax. Exclusive use of a shower room and a private sitting room with fridge freezer is also available. Wifi. This space has its own entrance. My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, business travellers and young families. Use of a travel cot or sofa bed for additional guests is available on request.
You will really enjoy staying next to our beautiful "St Cyrus National Nature Reserve". If you like birds RSPB Fowlsheugh a little up the cost is well worth a visit. Lots of nice places to eat (great seafood, fish and chips, strawberry teas etc). St Cyrus has a cafe with award winning cakes, a pub and hotel which serves evening meals, a shop and park. Neighbouring village Johnshaven has an excellent seafood restaurant and further up the coastal road in Gourdon there is the famous Quayside fish and chip shop. Nearby Montrose has all the amenities you would expect of a town. Lots to do in the area, a superb place to enjoy the beautiful Mearns and coastal areas made famous in Gassic Gibbon's Scots Quair.
  • Couldn't have been more pleased with our choice to stay here for two nights, cosy, kind and thoughtful. The beach is so close and absolutely stunning. Well worth staying and would 100% recommend!

  • KIrtsty's place is a real gem, cosy self contained space, very comfortable, and blissfully quiet, Kirsty is a great host, welcoming and friendly, highly recommended and hope to visit again in the future.

  • Wonderful location close to St Cyrus beach. Super friendly hosts. Lovely cottage style accommodation.

    Peter2019-08-16T00:00:00Z
  • The annexe is clean and comfortable, and within easy walking distance of the beach, though down some steep stairs. Kirsty was very warm and welcoming, and quickly made us feel at home! She is an amazing cook as well, she arranged an incredible evening meal (at an extra charge), and was happy to cater for vegetarians. There is a fridge and microwave handy for lunch/breakfast or a cookout on the beach, but no cooking facilities. We really enjoyed our stay!

    Lydia2019-08-05T00:00:00Z
  • Kirsty and John's place is sizeable three room annex to their main home. It contains a bedroom, bathroom, and a sitting room, and looks out onto a large garden on one side and the family's play space and yard on the other. It has its own access and is separate from the family space. The area is wonderfully quiet and access to the beach is a short walk away, on the other side of the large church. Note that the beach is 200-300 feet below the clifftop area. There is a path down from that point, or, if one drives a couple of miles down the road, one can access the beach from much lower down. We didn't have much opportunity to interact with Kirsty as she had other obligations at the time, but John was friendly and helpful and we recommend their accommodation highly.

    William (Bill)2019-07-07T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely stay here in St. Cyrus. Hosts were really welcoming and relaxed which made us feel at home straightaway. The annex offers everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Lots of thoughtful touches such as good toys for our 2 year old son. Would definitely recommend!

  • Beautiful, spotless accommodation in gorgeous, tranquil surroundings. Kevin and Erica were superb hosts and their hospitality was outstanding . They seem to have thought of everything to make a holiday for a family with four boys perfect! The nature in the grounds and beyond is fabulous . We saw red squirrels, buzzards , rabbits , beautiful butterflies and I was very excited to spot a yellowhammer! A truly idyllic setting !

    Andrew2019-08-22T00:00:00Z
  • We didn’t know much about this part of Scotland and afterwards we have to say: such a beautiful region, such a cosy cottage with a big garden for children to play. We have to come back... to the beach in St. Cyrus, to the northernmost outdoor pool in Stonehaven and to Aberdeen. This cottage is located close to a forest and a peaceful place to be.

    Torsten2019-08-10T00:00:00Z
  • Comfortable, stylish country cottage, with great outdoor space for young and old. Lots to do nearby, fantastic scenery - no wonder we've been back!

    Donald2019-07-27T00:00:00Z
  • This is our second time staying at the wonderful house. The hosts, Kevin and Erika, are so welcoming and a bottle wine and box of fudge was waiting for us as we arrived. The house itself is beautifully fitted and presented. Super comfy beds and a fantastic kitchen space to cook and socialise in. My two kids live the attic space for hiding away in to play with their toys, and their dad loved the table tennis table in the garage. The garden and woods provide so much space, freedom and adventure for us all to explore and have fun in. The garden is a wildlife haven. This week were lucky to see a mink, a hedgehog, and lots of friendly red squirrels and bunny rabbits. It is also the perfect base for exploring Angus. We loved visiting the wonderful St Cyrus beach, swimming in the ‘invigorating’ North Sea, playing in the sand, spotting peregrine falcons and buying fresh fish for dinner from the fishing village of Gourdon. We had a great time too at the fab outdoor (heated) pool at Stonehaven and a foody delight eating at the But n’ Ben restaurant at Auchmithie. However, it’s hard to beat the hand cut chips and freshly cooked haddock from the the Lournie chipper at Laurencekirk. To the other side of the house, we also explored the hidden gems of the Angus Glens. We climbed up Mount Battock and all the way round the back of Loch Lee at the top of Glenesk. The house and surroundings is the perfect destination for a family holiday. I can’t recommend it enough.

  • This is a real adventure! We had so much fun being off grid even though it was mud season! We had everything we needed and it was a much-needed escape. The land is gorgeous and I even spotted a red squirrel! Lesley is a fantastic host and we loved her stories. We hope to come back again soon <3

    Hazel2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • A wonderful ‘back to nature ‘ retreat! Lesley’s place is wonderful! We had a truly relaxing time. Amazing to see a red squirrel on the nuts! Loved getting the fire going and relaxing on the veranda looking out into the woods. The hut is amazingly well equipped considering its off-grid location. There are solar powered usb chargers for phones and two USB lamps. The al-fresco shower was fun and worked fine! Lesley was lovely and really helpful, showed us Chantrelle mushrooms that we then collected and cooked! She also suggested good walks nearby. Would thoroughly recommend. Loved it!

    Rachel2019-08-18T00:00:00Z
  • We absolutely loved everything about our stay here. From the welcome we received, to the beautiful woodland and the wildlife, the Dowrie wood is a truly magical place. Lesley was so welcoming and such an inspiring person. If you are after a relaxing, back to nature experience, this is the place for you. We will definitely be back!

    Sarah2019-08-11T00:00:00Z
  • This place is magical! Ray and Lesley have created an inspiring space which we are grateful to have been able to share. They are brilliant hosts, always quick to respond and couldn’t have made us feel more welcome. Even Toby the dog came to hang out with us one night. We came here with our 2 year old boy and we all had a ball! The hut is quirky yet has everything you need and more. We loved exploring the area and discovering all the wee sculptures and creations that were dotted about. The hens are a special touch and the eggs delicious. The poly tunnel is amazing! It was such a nice trip, in nature, away from the noise of modern living. Nothing quite beats cooking on a fire or having an open air shower. We all need to spend more time appreciating the simple things and stop taking life for granted ❤️

    Heather2019-08-08T00:00:00Z
  • A very simple, special and natural space in the middle of a beautiful wood. The cabin was very comfortable, cozy and relaxing. We loved it.

  • Lovely location.. Very relaxing.. Perfect to recharge your batteries.

    Nikki2019-07-29T00:00:00Z
  • Excellent off grid living experience. Ideal for nature lovers and hikers alike! Or do what we did...take the children to allow them to experience the great outdoors, whilst giving them a new perspective on modern day living. Providing awareness of how wasteful we are capable of being and how easy it is to turn that around! Ray and Lesley are lovely hosts and valuable sources of information ; especially if you wish to cause less of an impact on our beautiful world whilst making some incredible memories!

The beamed ceilings, stonewalls and oak floors all add to the character and charm of this 19th century farmhouse. Whilst being a very relaxing and welcoming house for families it is also the perfect location for friends who wish to have a break away
Full of character, the farmhouse has lovely beamed ceilings, solid stone walls and oak floors, while the traditional paned sash windows look out over the garden to the fields and hills beyond. Step out of the bright, spacious dining area onto the patio for a barbecue, settle in for an evening around the fire pit (don't forget the marshmallows) , help yourself to fruit from the orchard or enjoy a game of croquet on the large front lawn. Kids will love exploring the garden and dogs are welcome at the farmhouse.
Capo Farmhouse is nestled in between an ancient Scots pine forest and the North Esk river, for complete peace and quiet in a country location. The charming villages of Edzell and Montrose are just a 10 min drive away. With the lovely beached of St Cyrus , Lunan Bay and Montrose just 15 mins away. The cities of Aberdeen to the North, 40 mins drive, Carnoustie just 30 mins away , and St Andrews and Dundee to the South, 35 mins. So you are well located for touring, be it castles , whiskey or golf you are looking for, all with beautiful scenery on route.
  • A beautiful house to stay in for a nice chilled out weekend - with lovely surroundings! Definitely would come back to stay again.

    Anne-Marie2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely amazing house, everything described and more. We had a small issue on one day through no ones fault with a burst pipe up the road, and although Caroline was away at the time, we were still supplied with more then enough drinking water etc within the hour to see us through until the pipe was fixed. Couldn’t ask for a better stay, and was already planning another trip before we left.

    Laura2020-02-21T00:00:00Z
  • If looking for places to go that would be perfect for a weekend away with a couple of friends, then look no further. This rustic farmhouse is beautiful. Packed with everything that you would need- from board games to the woodfire hot tub/indoor and outdoor fireplace, to a beautiful kitchen/dining room which was perfect hosting in and even a croquet set (Even though we didn't make use of it as its the middle of winter). Our hosts were away on holiday as the time, however, were always very quick to respond and eager to help with anything that they could. I would really recommend this Farmhouse.

Lovely and quiet, loads of parking, brilliant valve for money, warm and inviting with loads of space both inside and outside. Communication was excellent with Caroline. The next time we are in the area, I hope we can stay again. Thanks Caroline.

    Graham2019-12-13T00:00:00Z
  • Caroline’s place is just lovely. So well equipped, with everything you could need. The kitchen/dining room is bright and spacious, the lounge warm and comfortable and the bedrooms are a great size. The farmhouse is ideally located for having dogs and children as it is surrounded by open space with a lovely short walk to the river. The house itself is done up to a very high standard and made for a very relaxing weekend away. Lots to do in the local area - great beaches, woodland walks and super pubs a short drive away.

  • Great chalet and amazingly clean. Sandie’s communication is excellent and a minor issue, which was my fault anyway, was dealt with immediately.

  • Great experience and lovely host. Great open space. Would recommend staying.

    Hannah2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • Sadie has been so accommodating and we were surrounded by gorgeous views and plenty of amenities.

    John2019-11-11T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect location for a weekend getaway. Our family of four booked just hours before arriving and found an impeccably clean place stocked with milk and bread! Could not complain about the amazing sunrises and sunsets and the farm/ocean views. Nice quiet holiday park. If I were to change anything, I would make the two small beds in two of the rooms just a smidge bigger. I think they might have been slightly under twin size. However, we had a 4 year old with us and he loved them. Great hosts gave us lots of ideas for things to do and see with kids.

    Jesse2019-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • Sandie has a lovely place, bigger than expected.

    Aneeta (Netz)2019-09-01T00:00:00Z
  • Thanks so much again to Sandie for taking us at such short notice and for her hospitality! We loved our stay here and the tip about the beach at St Cyrus was perfect as we had a fab day there barely anyone else was on the enormous golden beach and even had some driftwood sculpted shelters! We simply can’t recommend Sandie and the caravan highly enough, super clean with everything you could need, excellent location and lovely quiet site! Thanks again Sandie, we will be back!

    Dani2019-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • Five star review. Everything was great. The van was spotlessly clean, in very good condition with everything we needed and more.

    Nikki2019-08-04T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely time at Sandie’s caravan, it was very clean and extremely well equipped. The loaf of bread and milk was so welcome. The area is absolutely beautiful - we went to St Cyrus nature reserve beach and watched dolphins swimming, made a camp fire and baked apples while the children played in the sea for hours. We also visited Dunnottar castle - I would recommend parking in Stonehaven and walking to the castle as it’s a stunning walk. Thank you for a lovely week.

Traditional & relaxed B&B in our family home. Twin bedroom with ensuite bathroom. Full breakfast included. For a large party, two other bedrooms may also be available on the same corridor.
The Blue room is a bright room, overlooking parkland, on the first floor. It has a two extra wide single beds with hanging space. The ensuite bathroom, for exclusive use by guests, has a large bath and hand held shower attachment. All linen, towels and basic toiletries will be provided. Duvets and pillows are feather/down, but synthetic may be available. A hairdryer is available, as well as an iron & ironing board. On the ground floor is a Billiard room with full sized snooker table and selection of board games which guests are welcome to use by separate arrangement. On inclement days or chilly evenings we would be happy to light a fire. A full breakfast is provided in our dining room, depending on requirements. A selection of cereals, fruit juices and yoghurt are all available, with home made bread and preserves. A simple cooked breakfast can be provided.
  • Highly recommended, Griselda is an excellent hostess. I would come back anytime (and probably do)!

    Matthias2019-10-10T00:00:00Z
  • Griselda's place was absolutely enchanting. We were thrilled to stay in a castle with much history that is very well maintained but without losing the historic charm. We entertained ourself with tea in front of a roaring fireplace after a long drive, and I enjoyed a morning run along a well-paved road in the beautiful countryside. It was both relaxing and exciting to explore and appreciate the old books on the shelves and the delicious meals. Griselda was flexible about our arrival and when we dined, which was really appreciated. It was a little tricky to find, but her directions were spot-on. I'd highly recommend walking the grounds!

    Jennifer2019-10-08T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely perfect. Really, there is nothing negative I can say about this stay. I was slightly skeptical before coming when I found out that there was no TV in the room, but when I discovered what a beautiful home it truly was, there really was no need for watching television and in fact, I think that would diminish the authentic castle experience. Griselda's husband put on a fire for us and we enjoyed an evening of relaxing in front of the fire. The WiFi was actually quite good, which surprised me a little considering that this was quite a sizable castle. Griselda's hospitality was second-to-none. She welcomed us immediately, gave us a little tour and provided an amazing breakfast in the morning. The biggest disappointment was that we could only stay one night. It would have be nice to have more time to explore more of this sizable property, but if I'm ever in Scotland again, I'll be sure to book Griselda's place!

    Jason2019-10-04T00:00:00Z
  • Thornton Castle is an absolute treat! Griselda and Ian are extremely accommodating hosts and the Castle itself, with the grounds and animals, is truly delightful!

    Lucinda2019-09-12T00:00:00Z
  • Staying in a castle is magical and the Blue Room is very Comfortable .Griselda is a wonderful host and the breakfast is excellent .There was even a decanter of whisky in the Billiard room if you fancied a nightcap. We will be back.

  • superb step in a castle 'peacefull', romantic and exceptional all with a caring welcome and an excellent breakfast with local products: go there!

    Thierry2019-09-06T00:00:00Z
  • A very special experience was spending a night at Thornton Castle! As a stop on our tour of the Cairngorms, we were happy to discover « from the inside » the contemporary life of a Scottish castle and family. Griselda was a wonderful host, getting us comfortable, at ease, taking time to show us the castle and explaining its history. The blue room is lovely, and the moments we spent in the garden, the salon, as well as the breakfast, are unforgettable. Thank you very much for giving us this opportunity.

    Merril2019-08-06T00:00:00Z
  • Stunning castle on a very large and beautiful property. The castle is rich with history, an unforgettable experience. Location is also not too for from Dunnottar Castle which is a most see. Griselda was so helpful, kind and welcoming. Also breakfast was amazing. Will definitely stay again!

Newly renovated with space and comfort in mind, it sits on the edge of capo woods - an ancient Scots pine forest. The main room is huge and combines the kitchen, dinning room and sitting room allowing everyone to socialise together
Large and spacious open plan living is what Rowan Cottage is all about. With a light and airy living/dining/kitchen area, a perfect socializing space while the cook is not left out of the fun; the glass roofed garden room acts as another living room area and is perfect for star gazing after dark, or curling up with a good book . An alluring path leads from the garden directly into the woods behind.
Rowan cottage is nestled in between an ancient Scots pine forest and the North Esk river, for complete peace and quiet. The charming villages of Edzell and Fettercairn just a 10 min drive away. With the lovely beaches of St Cyrus, Lunan Bay and Montrose just 15 mins away. The cities of Aberdeen to the north, 40 mins drive , Carnoustie just 30 mins away , and St Andrews and Dundee to the South, 30 mins . So we are well located for touring, be it castles , whiskey or golf you are looking for , all with beautiful scenery on route.
  • Rowan Cottage provides lovely, cosy accommodation in a beautiful setting. Plenty to do nearby - walking in the woods, a beautiful park in nearby Edzell, the Shaking Briggie a great hit with the youngsters, and wildlife to watch. Would definitely come back.

    Carole2019-10-07T00:00:00Z
  • Great house in beautiful surroundings, host was great and very responsive with any questions we had.

    David2019-09-30T00:00:00Z
  • We found Rowan Cottage to be a very well designed, moderately up-market, four-bedroom holiday rental property. The cottage, inside and out, is suitable for people of restricted mobility. Indeed one of the bedrooms is specifically geared to suit a person in a wheelchair. The actual space in the cottage is generous, and the high ceiling in the main room adds considerably to the feeling of space. The garden room, with one entire wall and the ceiling glazed, is a lovely place to sit and read or to watch the wildlife in the nearby wood. Strategically placed bird seed and peanut feeders encouraged small birds to show up. The kitchen area is more than adequately supplied with white goods, crockery, glasses and utensils. The whole place was thoroughly clean. The heating was efficient and the beds were comfortable. We appreciated the useful information detailed in the brown book. There were more than enough places of interest and eating places to last us for a week. We particularly enjoyed our visit to the House of Dun.

    Donald2019-09-07T00:00:00Z
  • Really great cottage. Plenty of space inside and amazing gardens and grounds!

    Yehuda2019-08-30T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely beautiful cottage with great facilities. Fab outdoor spaces right on your doorstep. Great location to visit the wonderful coastline, picturesque villages or the Angus Glens. Perfect for families of all ages. A fairly long drive along a track into the property, which for us, didn't detract one bit and meant a very peaceful location at the end of it. Perfect for us as grandparents, with our 'children' and grandchildren. Great social spaces and also enough private space for us not to be under each other's feet. Can't recommend enough.

    Liz2019-08-19T00:00:00Z
  • A truly amazing stay. The cottage is stunning with Capo woods literally on your doorstep. I'm ready missing waking up to the most beautiful views. Caroline's hospitality was second to none. Very thoughtful touches and the place was spotless. Dream home material. Will definitely recommend to our friends and family.

  • The road in is a bit lumpy if you are in a normal car and my daughter had to call AA because her new car was making a terrible noise and it turned out it was loose stones from the drive into the cottage that had got stuck in her brake calliper. However the cottage was perfect!

  • Sometimes you hit the jackpot on Airbnb, and Caroline's place was one of those times. Her place is even more beautiful in real life! Everything from sofa to beds and kitchen appliances were of a really high standard. We were two couples staying, both enjoying having good sized bedrooms and separate bathrooms. The outdoor space holds a beautiful garden, and is so lovely and peaceful. I can not recommend this place enough.

  • Caroline was a great host and was very helpful accommodating us, providing details about the area, directions in getting to the house and being available for anything we may need. The house itself is very impressive and comfortable, in a very quiet and relaxing location with great views over the fields and local wildlife. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Cart Shed and would definitely stay here again and recommend this home if guests are going to be in and around the area as its well placed to travel around the area as well as both Aberdeen and Dundee being in close proximety. Thank you again Caroline for making this a great stay. Thanks Ronnie

The area is very convenient with easy access to Dundee and Aberdeen, but far enough to give you a countryside feel. • My girlfriend and I stayed at Caroline's for 4 nights, and had an absolutely fantastic time. Getting to the cottage was easy - the directions provided were clear and easy to follow. The house was spacious, well decorated, with a well-equipped kitchen and clear instructions on how to manage the heating/hot water. Everything was very clean, and the large bath was a particularly nice feature. We were lucky with the weather, and ate most of our evening meals out on the balcony overlooking the woods. The location was amazing, and we enjoyed a nice walk along the river, before heading out to the Cairngorms (a 35 minute drive away) for some longer walks. Caroline's hospitality was superb. She was extremely responsive before arriving and provided us with the number of a local taxi company which we needed to attend a wedding. When there, she was very friendly and approachable, and seemed to really take an interest in ensuring we enjoyed our stay. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Caroline's place to anyone looking to stay in the area.

  • We had a wonderful stay at the Cowshed. The property is set within a huge garden and the outdoor space is stunning. We made use of the outdoor decking each morning and evening with an undisturbed view. The house is exceptionally well equipped, immaculately clean and beautifully decorated. Highlights - enormous bed in the huge master bedroom, three bathrooms to save anyone waiting, log burner in the living room, decking and furniture from patio doors in living room, well stocked cupboards and pantry, wii for kids, magazines, books and games to play, LOCATION!! If you are looking for a peaceful, luxury break with your family with the great outdoors on your doorstep don’t hesitate to book.

  • This is a nice well equipped apartment and Margaret was an attentive and thoughtful host. She even offered us a turkey roasting tin as we were staying over Christmas. The kitchen is very well equipped- we were able to bake a cake and to make scones etc. It’s a garden flat in the lower ground floor, so does not actually have views over the (fine) gardens but does get natural daylight. It’s a solid and beautiful old building and being in the lower ground does act as a sink for the colder air. The lounge was very toasty but the bedrooms could be very cold. The electric blankets and terrific duvets were great, but you’d certainly feel the air-shock if getting up in the night. Like I say, we were there over Christmas. Nice place in the wonderful ‘Mo’.
