“This impressive monument is one of the oldest and most important buildings of the city. It is located on the hillside of the acropolis hill, in contact with the eastern wall of the city, on which it rests. Its initial phase, which is modern with the city walls, dates back to the years of King Philip II of Macedonia (in the 4th century BC) and its dimensions prove that it is one of the largest theaters of antiquity. Eventhough it has sustained many changes throughout the centuries and some interventions so that it can host the Philippi Festival, it still preserves many of its original elements.”

“You will be able to see where the castle is on what is known as the old part of the city and you will see a road climbing up into that area. The road is full of little touristy shops selling souvenirs. You will also see many restaurants. If you follow the road all the way you will come to a church and you will see that there is a set of stairs which double back towards the castle. That is the fastest way to the Castle and it will be sign posted. There are other ways to the Castle but they involve trial and error. ”

“Maybe a long walk, but the view will compensate for it. On the way there you can see the old town of Kavala, which is very traditional and picturesque. When you arrive at the top you will have a overall view of the city, the port and the sea. ”

“One of the best beaches in central Crete are the breathtaking Melissa Cape Sandhills near Agios Pavlos, at the south end of the vast seafront of Akoumiani Gialia. The Sandhills are located around 55km south of Rethymnon city and are bounded to the south by the Cape Melissa and to the north by river Akoumianos and Triopetra beach. The deep sea is very inviting for a swim and it is quite common to see people in various states of beachwear or lack thereof owing to the area's relative seclusion and privacy offered by the coves around the beaches. The locals also call it Alatsogremi (salt cliffs). ”

“The old aqueduct in the city center is a unique monument of the 16th century, 270m long and 25m tall. It was used until the beginning of the 20th century to carry the water into the old town of Kavala. It is probably the most important and well known monument of the city. ”

“Being the natural border between the districts of Kavala and Xanthi, the Nestos runs a long way of sheer gorgeousness consisting in rich forests, rare wetlands and imposing geological formations. It is one of the top 5 biotopes in Europe. The straits of the Nestos are definitely the best part of this wonderful place, a botanical garden of 23.800.000 sq., deservedly designated as an “aesthetic forest”. Crossing the straits is one of the most exciting hiking trails in Greece. From the village of Galani (in close proximity to Toxotes) starts a branch of the international path E6. What is more, it is stone-cobbled at its initial part, thanks to the workers on the railway. ”
