Places to stay in Karitane

Places to stay in Karitane
My place is a converted shipping container studio ticking all the boxes for the tiny house movement. Compact space packed with features for a comfortable stay. Situated in the back garden of my rustic old crib (small holiday cottage) just 80 metres to the beautiful Karitane Beach - surfing, swimming, walking, fishing. (No sea views from garden). The estuary is close by: local store/cafe "Salt and Sugar" a short walk. Karitane is a tiny, quaint, quiet village, 30mins drive from Dunedin City.
There is everything you need for a comfortable stay. Cooking includes double hotplate, mini bench top oven, microwave and electric frying pan. Extractor fan to use when cooking. The bathroom is compact with a large roomy shower separated by a sliding door. Heating is by fan heater and oil filled heater. Use fan to get the temperature up quickly then change over to oil heater on thermostat. The container is in the back garden of my little old holiday cottage/crib. Most of the time you will have this garden area to yourself as I am often in Dunedin. The sofa bed folds out to a full king size in two parts. You can have the back rest up for sitting up in bed. It is a firm sleeping surface . See photos for set up. Please open ALL CUPBOARDS as linen etc is stored there and you will find everything you need.
Karitane is a quiet little fishing port. Back in the day it was a thriving whaling station but these days its mainly recreational fishing. The beach is popular with surfers and often has great waves to ride. The beach is long and a great walk. The harbour area is popular with kayakers and paddle boarders. There are Maori waka tours also. The Huriawa peninsula is a great walk with paths and excellent views all within the historic Maori Pa site. The local cafe/shop Salt and Sugar is just 400metres roughly from Seaforth St. It is located on the corner of Scarp and Stornoway Sts. You can buy almost everything you need here.
  • Unique experience staying in a lovely converted container. All the things you require for a comfortable stay, in such a small cosy place.

  • Karitane is a stunning little village (even when the weather isn't that great) and the bach was a great find. Had everything we could need for a couple nights (including a full sized shower and hairdryer!). The bed was a little firmer than we are used to, but all in all a great stay.

    Waikouaiti, Otago, New Zealand

Barvas Cottage offers views of the bay and a modern renovated interior as well as private areas to relax and take in the views around the property. With access to fishing gear, you can catch fresh fish for tea from the wharf and cook it on the new barbecue, or try one of the restaurants down the road in Waikouaiti. This cottage truly is a waterfront property, with access to beaches within 5 minutes and access to the bay directly out front. Ideal for couples or small families with young kids.
This private cottage is ideal for those wanting to get away from the bustling city life or for a couples retreat. It features a modern kitchen with gas stove, microwave, toaster oven, jug, bbq and plenty of cutlery and cookware. 2 steps lead you into the quaint bedroom which features views of the bay and a ladder to access the loft. (Ideal for children). There is also a 2 person sofa bed in the main lounge area. The bathroom is detached but is just a step outside to the veranda and down into a second area containing the shower, toilet and wash basin. There are heaters provided for the colder nights as Karitane can get a little chilly. Outside you will find a new bbq and side burner for those summer day fry ups. As well as a private courtyard for those lovely summer nights.
Friendly neighbors are always happy to stop and offer directions or for a chat or give fishing tips.
  • This gorgeous cottage is perfectly located in what I'd describe as a true piece of paradise. Any travellers who are looking for a place to stay I highly recommend this place, it was sparkling clean and had everything you needed to cook basic meals, we will be returning. Our cosy shepherd's hut overlooks the Hawksbury Lagoon Wildlife Refuge, a haven for birds & a peaceful escape for you. Enjoy tranquil views from the luxury of bed. Explore the lagoon on your doorstep & walk to the stunning Waikouaiti beach. Stoke up the little fire for a snug evening in. We'll leave you in peace but are on hand if needed. Guests have a separate private bathroom and kitchenette. Continental breakfast provided. Free WiFi. Off-street parking & EV charging. 30 minutes from Dunedin.
We love to share our special spot beside the lagoon. You can bird-watch from your bed in the Bird Hide! There are often spectacular sunrises across the water too. The cosy sleeping space with curved ceiling has a queen size bed made up with luxury cotton and linen bedding. It's a replica of a shepherd's hut with modern conveniences such as power, lights and heating. The little woodburner creates a lovely atmosphere on a cold night. In warm weather you can throw open the French doors and relax in your own secluded nature retreat, nestled in the native harakeke. The Bird Hide itself is located within the boundary of the Department of Conservation reserve, for which we have a special concession. Some of your payment goes to DoC and helps us pay for regenerative plantings. As part of this privilege of being literally amongst the wildlife we ask guests to respect the unique location and to not go beyond the Bird Hide onto the lagoon shore or disturb the wildlife in any way.
The Bird Hide is located within the Hawksbury Lagoon Wildlife Refuge in the heart of Waikouaiti. Waikouaiti is a beautiful historic area with many options for walking and exploring in and around the village and is only 30 minutes drive away from Dunedin city. There is a network of flat causeways across the lagoon with easy walking on gravelled surfaces. You can take a lovely walk from the end of our street along the causeways to the beach (about 15 minutes). Waikouaiti beach itself is a stunning, sheltered long white beach with few visitors. Other exploring ideas include: the historic Matanaka farm buildings of early settler Johnny Jones that overlook the ocean; the delightful St Johns Anglican church around the corner (the oldest church still in use in Otago/Southland and a filming location for the movie The Light Between Oceans); golf at the Waikouaiti golf course (visible from the Bird Hide) nearby Huriawa peninsula and Karitane beach and fishing village; Karitane Maori Waka Tours; local second-hand shops; the Coast Road drive along to Blueskin Bay and Waitati; a visit to the Moeraki boulders (30 minutes away) and further afield to Oamaru (50 minutes away). There is a local Beach St Tavern 10 minutes walk away with dinner options or the Golden Fleece pub on the main road near the shops. The local shops are all on the Main Road (Highway One) and are 10 minutes walk away. There is a dairy for all your general needs, a bakery with delicious Beanos pies and baking, a cafe for yummy breakfasts and lunches and a fish and chip shop. In the summer months you can also enjoy wood-fired pizza from the nearby Karitane general store (5 minutes drive) and food trucks and beer at the stylish Arc Brewery in Evansdale (15 minutes drive).
  • Absolutely beautiful spot of the world. Great space with everything you need to relax. Delicious breaky! Perfect place to unwind.

  • Can you give an Airbnb six stars? The birds alone deserve five stars! This place is exquisite. If you are a bird lover, you can’t find a better spot to stay in Otago! Beyond the location, the space is stylish, clean, and comfortable. Emily is a great communicator and we had everything we could need. Highly recommend to all!

    Amanda2020-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • We were not sure what to expect, it surpassed our expectations. A unique stay.

    Jon2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • I would highly recommended the birdie hide to anyone who enjoys a quite and quirky place to stay. It’s exceptionally clean and has everything you need for an overnight stay. We had a comfortable night sleep and waking up listening to the birds on the lagoon is amazing. The separate shower and kitchen area was also very clean and well equipped. Everything you need for breakfast is provided if required. Nice little touch.

We are a small self sufficient farm with friendly goats, donkeys, alpacas and cattle. We have free range chickens in the orchard and ducks on the pond. We grow much of our own fruit and vegetables. We have 87 acres of hillside you are welcome to explore. Right on the main road, but peaceful and private, we are only 30 minutes' drive from Dunedin city centre, and 10 minutes from delightful beaches, friendly villages, and a bird sanctuary.
  • very rural farmstay , loved the animals around, even though very quiet and comfortable place with all you need, fuly equipped kitchen, bath/shower. • Jill’s place in karitane is in such a special spot with an awesome view right at the front door. We stayed with our 1 1/2 daughter and absolutely loved it. Very private and Jill made us feel so welcome with all the little extras. Can’t think of anything more that she could have done. The place is a perfect little getaway and has everything you need. Would 100% love to stay again and have already recommended it to friends and family. Thanks Jill we had the best time! x

Expect to see beautiful sunrises, sunsets and wildlife from seals swimming up the estuary to birds diving for fish. This place was renovated with the views in mind and is the closest property to the water on AirBNB in Karitane right now. Truly a waterfront property. If you are after more room and extra beds, situated next door is Barvas Cottage. Our quaint 1 bedroom cottage with a loft. Idea for couples after a getaway or just an escape from the noise of those in the house. Search for Barvas Cottage now to include this in your booking.
The neighbourhood is made up of many locals who either grew up in Karitane or who have moved in for the stunning views and quietness that Karitane offers. Many of our guests have commented on how friendly the locals are and helpful. Just a moments walk away is the jetty, the preferred spot for fishing and jumping off on a hot day. Karitane is known as a great surf spot for those who love the ocean and with 2 beaches to choose from, you will always catch waves on the right tide.
  • We loved our short stay here and wished it could have been longer. The views are stunning and the house is clean, spacious and has everything you need.

  • This place is amazing ... what an amazing view, like a living screen saver. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you need to help make great food. It's very comfortable and spacious and I'd be amazed is much better in the area. Also lots of parking and not far to the amenities of Dunedin. I'd easily recommend to anyone coming to this part of NZ South Island.

    Victoria2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • This place is still better than what it looks like on the pictures. The house is big, very comfortable, perfectly clean and the view on the bay and on the fishing boats is just stunning. It’s a very relaxing place and Katarine and the area are worth knowing if you enjoy relaxing. Even though we didn’t get to meet Joel and Lea, they were very present and helpful through their written communication. Very good hosts. We highly recommend.

    Jacques2020-02-08T00:00:00Z
  • This is an immaculately clean and comfortable house in a stunning location. The view from the lounge room is enough to keep you entertained even on a cold, wet day!

    Jeremy2019-12-24T00:00:00Z
  • What a gem of a spot! The house is well equipped, spotlessly clean & has superb views! We spent our time walking & biking the quiet roads and tracks, and Paul enjoyed paddle boarding on the river and nearby Back Bay. We loved the starlings nesting in the bird box + we had a few visits from the resident seagull (he liked sitting in the deck & looking through the doors watching us eat), and enjoyed watching the spoonbills foraging on the beach at low tide. We were also treated to three rainbows & a visit from a seal on the spit opposite the house :o)

    Michelle2019-12-09T00:00:00Z
  • There really isn't enough words to describe this place! it is such a hidden gem! Joel and Lea have put so much effort into making this place so wonderful. They are fantastic hosts. There's only one problem with this place. . . having to leave it!!!

    Dorothy2019-11-24T00:00:00Z

The Cottage is at the back of my house in the garden. It is a small sunny room with a lovely view over the garden towards Flagstaff, one of the highest hills above Dunedin. It is quiet and private. KANGEN WATER. The bathroom is down at the back of the house, aprox 30m from the Cottage. Hot tub. The perfect place to rest up from your travels. Five minutes drive to the Stadium or town. Stadium events, it may be possible to be dropped of. Other listings. Grandview Bungalow Grandview Tree House
The Cottage is a basic room with a double bed, there are tea and coffee making facilities and a small fridge. The kitchen in the house can be used for basics. I usually have a variety of cold drinks available for a small donation which goes to my favorite charities. The bathroom at the back of the house is always available. The bathroom in the house can also be used if perferred. I do live on a hill, so the Cottage is aprox 30m up from the house and therefore the bathroom at the back. The kitchen/dining/living areas in the house offers more space to relax and watch TV or a movie. Because I live in the house and host two international students and work it is a homely lived in space and a work in progress in some areas with regards to ongoing renovations and the large garden. There is also a room in the house available for accommodation. Check out Grandview Bungalow. Front room.
Opoho is on the hill above the Botanical gardens and is a lovely area to live in Dunedin. It is a short walk to the upper Botanical gardens. Signal Hill Lookout is five minutes drive up the hill. Wonderful view of the city and harbour from the lookout.
  • It’s lovely there and Gaye is a wonderful host. She accepted me very spontaneous and saved me therefore from another night at a horrible place. Thanks for that. I’m very sorry that I was only there for one night, would always return.

Our house began in the 1860's as a fisherman's cottage built for the local lighthouse keeper. Over the years it has eclectically grown into a unique rambling retreat. We have a spectacular north-facing view of the ocean with all day sun, no matter the season. This creative space, filled with birdsong, is for couples, solo adventurers, families, artists, writers, photographers, outdoor lovers or anyone looking to re-charge in paradise.
There are three shower areas at the house - one over claw foot bath, one indoor/outdoor with great views out to garden, the other as part of a separate ablution block. For photography enthusiasts, there is a built in dark room, but you will need bring your own chemicals, unless otherwise arranged beforehand. Big screen television not hooked to a provider, only for watching movies (DVD collection). Games, cards, puzzles and books provided.
Our house sits within the "town belt", overlooking Carey's Bay. Access is through a reserve and we always meet guests at the lookout and guide them down the rugged driveway to our private parking area. From the house there are various walking tracks. One takes you to down to Port Chalmers with its cafes, shops and galleries, another up into the countryside with spectacular Otago Harbour views. It is only 15 scenic kilometres from Dunedin and, in the other direction, great surf beaches like Warrington with its Hector dolphins and Aromoana with its penguins, seals and seabirds. Popular eating places include: the Historic Carey's Bay Pub and The Portsider in Port Chalmers. Visit New Zealand's tallest tree at the Orokanui Bird Sanctuary only a 7 minute drive on Blueskin Road. Charter a fishing boat in the harbour or go horse riding down the road. It's paradise at every turn.
  • Sprawling, retro, eclectic, historic... all these could be used to describe Lara and Phil's place. It's a big area, but however interesting the native hardwoods everywhere, the books, paintings and many rooms to explore... it is the view that you'll miss long after you've gone. Lara was very welcoming, and always on hand nearby to answer questions or sort recommendations. Port Chalmers is so close to Dunedin but so secluded... it's another world with the city right there if you want it, and empty beaches when you don't (Doctor's Point is a secret find!)

  • Our ten-day stay at Lara & Phil's house in Port Chalmers was magical. Everything about the house -- its history, its stained glass windows, its views of Carey's Bay, its comfortable beds and cozy rooms, its well-stocked kitchen, itsgardens--was wonderful. And Lara is the best host ever. We've stayed in nine airbnb houses on this two month trip to NZ, and this was our favorite, hands down. Thank you, Lara!

  • Lara and Phil's place is beautifully tucked away in a private peaceful spot with lots of lovely walking spots close by! It has a super view out to the harbour. The house has a lot of history which we loved hearing about from Lara. We found the property to be really warm and comfortable even though the weather was not the best. The cats came to keep us company too and were friendly. Thanks for all the tips of where to go and a contact to get to and from the concert!! It was all much appreciated.

    Emma2020-02-05T00:00:00Z
  • We had an awesome stay at Lara & Phil’s place! Their house is much more beautiful than what we expected. The views are stunning and it’s refreshing to just hear the birds singing in the morning. Lara is very kind to drop us off and pick us up from the concert. This place deserves 6 stars! Will definitely go back 😊

  • This place looks amazing in the photos and it's every bit as good in real life. Loads of character, this is a fun and quirky historic house. Lots to do around here, we loved our stay.

  • If you were looking for some of the best views in Port Chalmers and a fun collective creative space, this is the place for you. Lara and Phil were warm and knowledgeable hosts.

This room is a sleepout at the top of my quiet secluded property with KANGEN WATER I call it the Tree House because It is in the trees. Part of the upper garden. It is a large room with a Queen sized bed and a sofa. Lovely view from the windows and the landing at the door. There are five steps up to the door. It is about 35 meters up from the house. Quiet and peaceful. Hot tub. The bathroom and shower are down at the back of the house. There is another bathroom in the house.
Quiet and peaceful. The bird life is in the trees beside the room, so it's not unusual to have Kereru ( native pigeon), Tui, Fantail, Bell birds, Kakariki (native parakeet). There is a kettle, tea, coffee, hot chocolate. Microwave. Small fridge. Heatpump. Warm up in the winter with a hot Spa pool is usually available for an additional fee. It is not far from the room in the upper garden. Extra towels are available from the house.
  • The treehouse is gorgeous! Located in the middle of a beautiful garden, I woke up to the sounds of Tui and bellbirds. Gaye was a lovely host and very welcoming.

Wish I had booked it for more than 1 night. You won’t regret staying at this wonderful oasis high up on signal hill!!

Fisherman’s Cottage is a few metres from the river and sea, with stunning views inside and out. All photos are taken onsite. In true NZ Bach style the accommodation is in two parts, a bedroom with ensuite bathroom, and the kitchen is alongside in an old hut, modernised. The apartment rooms are amongst the oldest in Karitane but are well heated. I live in the adjoining house. After a welcome your privacy is assured Breakfast provisions for a couple of days provided plus a few staples.
The proximity to the sea is what makes this apartment special, either sitting outside listening to the waves, or watching it from the window seat inside. Every window has a view.
We are situated between the Waikouaiti river and the Pacific ocean. A few steps one way and you are on a beautiful white sand beach, a few steps the other way from the carpark and you are alongside a river. Follow the river upstream to our local shop which has a small cafe attached, very good for pizza dinner on summer weekends. Follow the river to its mouth and a cliff side walk around the historic Huirapa peninsula. There are often Hooker sea lions on the beach and they have even stayed in my garden, this is unlikely to happen while you are here, but if they are around I will warn you.
  • If by some miracle in your life, you have landed on Diane’s listing, book it! Her place is magical and if I could travel back to one place in my life, it would be here! This place is so comfortable and cozy and it has everything you need! The bedroom, bathroom and kitchen are adorable and perfect! If you think you need an oven, Di will help you out with that. The outside sitting areas are priceless! The surrounding areas are heaven! White sandy beaches, Albatross and penguin viewing, it’s a bird lovers paradise, and if that weren’t enough, there’s the cutest wee store up the road, where you can buy necessities and have wood fired pizza! Stop reading and book Diane’s place!

    Helen2020-03-21T00:00:00Z
  • This is a great place to stay. Big bedroom, lots of homely touches and a neat little shed made into a kitchen dining area with views to the beach and the river. Perfectly located to walk the peninsula trail and along the beach and 5 mins walk to Salt and Sugar the local shop and pizza place. Highly recommend you stay here.

    Craig2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • This cottage was the highlight of our 2 week holiday... we loved the location and had several walks on the beach. We also spent lots of time enjoying the cottages themselves, so warm and light filled and full of gathered treasures. The bed was very comfortable and so were the chairs, everything was just perfect and we didn’t want to leave! Thanks again for a lovely stay!

  • A nice and quiet place to stay on a farm that is just a few minutes drive from Palmerston. Meralyn and David are good company with a great sense of humour, lots of knowledge and experience in sheep farming, as well as local tips for your next day adventure. There are so much more to it than just bed and breakfast. I would highly recommend a few night’s stay and even book in a farm tour to learn the history of local farmers, see sheep farming in action, hop on a bumpy and exciting ride across the hilly paddocks.

    Vincent2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely place - very friendly hosts. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay

    Warren2020-02-03T00:00:00Z

  • Meralyn and David's place was lovely! They are wonderful hosts full of knowledge and easy to chat with, I really enjoyed our conversations about anything and everything! They provided breakfast, coffee and tea which was very nice in the morning. The home is clean and tidy with a beautiful yard in a country setting. It was also very quiet and I slept well during my stay. Would definitely stay again! Thank you!

When you want to get away from it all and relax, "Number 24" provides an excellent base close to the City of Dunedin. All the basics of a motel room, with the comfort of making yourself at home, plus the ambience of being in quiet natural surroundings. Past guests have come to explore the area, to hang out for a weekend with a friend, to write some more of their novel/thesis, to be out of town when visiting Dunedin for hospital/events, and to job hunt from a destressing base! We welcome you.
"24" is attached to our garage, and about 35m from our home - so self contained, but able to access our assistance if needed. One step up gets you into the unit, and the bathroom is recessed one step down off the living floor - accessibility is easy. A park for your vehicle outside the room, enables you to have easy access and come-and-go at your leisure. The area of Blueskin Bay boasts quiet cafes, a library, bush, beach, ecological interpretation, and a general sense of being in a rural setting whether you choose to drive or walk around. Being self-contained, "24" allows you to be on your own timetable. Heating in winter, and a fan in summer mean the indoors is always comfortable... and the small courtyard and seating beside the unit, give you a place to gently soak up the ambience.
Orokonui Ecosanctuary, Doctors Point Beach and Warrington Beach are all a short drive away. The Ecosanctuary is very special and their cafe is also great. Make time to visit the visitor centre at least 😀 In 15 minutes drive you can be in Dunedin, Port Chalmers, Karitane or Waikouaiti. Or reduce your carbon emissions while here and spend the time in the village - a grocery store, cafes, art galleries and the local library are all within 10 minutes walk. Orokonui Estuary Track is right across the road and is a 1 hr walking loop. Gallery on Blueskin hosts meals and live musicians several times a week. Blueskin Nurseries and Cafe are great for daytime dreaming and eating well. Harvey St Merchants boasts locally sourced fresh produce and great icecream (Th-Sun) . Waitati Design store is open Friday - Sunday. Home and decor deliciousness. Market Day is the first Sunday morning each month - an eclectic mix of craft, second hand, artists, local food. Lots of fun!

Welcome to Swooping Pigeon. We live on a 50 acre lifestyle block which is 10 minute drive north of Dunedin. We offer you a private guest room in a new barn-style house with it's own entrance so you can come and go as you please. We offer a delicious continental breakfast with home made goodies. Please note that our place is not appropriate for 2 week self isolation due to there being no kitchen.
Our guest room has a queen size bed and ensuite bathroom with a great wet area shower. There are beautiful views out all windows of the house. Our farm is named after the big wood pigeons that you can hear swoop down the valley. The valley is very quiet apart from all the native birds you can hear singing. We provide a continental breakfast with home made muesli, locally roasted coffee beans and T2 tea. In the winter, you will be cosy and warm because we have underfloor heating! We also have alpaca who are always keen for someone to feed them:-) check out our Face book page on @4SwoopingPigeonAlpacaNZ
We live in a rural hilly area, rich in native birds and bush. The famous Blueskin Garden Nursery and Cafe is 10 minutes drive down to Waitati.

Come stay and enjoy the natural beauty of the Peninsula in our self-contained guest accommodation specifically designed for comfort with all the mod cons. We are located in Company Bay, 15 minutes from the Dunedin CBD. It has a semi-rural feel but vibrant enough not to feel out of the city. Wake up to peace, birdsong and views of hills and harbour.
The 2 bedroom unit is accessed up a seperate pathway to the back of the house to its own entrance and is completely private and separate from the main house. It’s has a separate bathroom, separate toilet and a kitchen/laundry area. The kitchen has hot plate, microwave, toaster, jug so you can make simple meals. With double glazing, great insulation in all the rooms combined with a heat pump which converts to a cooling air conditioner you have perfect comfort and temperature control. One of the bedrooms has a king single bed and fold down sofa and combines as a living area which overlooks the Otago harbour. The view is the perfect sunny spot to have brekkie and a steaming plunger coffee or cup of freshly brewed tea before heading out to all that the Peninsula has to offer.
Whether you just want to hike the hills, walk the amazing beaches with its range of wildlife including albatrosses, penguins and seals, do the touristy thing at Larnarchs Castle, partake in the amazing award winning cuisine at Glenfalloch Restaurant & Gardens, or just stroll to Macandrew Bay for an ice cream on the beach, our home is central to it all. You can buy groceries at the Macandrew Bay store which is 5 minutes drive or 10 drive to Portobello Store. There is also a pub, cafe and restaurant at Portobello.
  • An excellent base for enjoying the Peninsula. Everything you could possibly need and lovely touches like milk and bread to settle in. Highly recommend.

  • A great place to stay. Loved the washing machine, the full bathroom with bath, Netflix and the whole loaf of bread, milk and condiments. A really quiet spot away from the city but close enough to be there in 15 minutes. One of our better Airbnb stays. Highly recommend.

  • Julie and Geoff's B&B is a wonderful place to spend a few days in Dunedin. It is about 15 km outside on the peninsula to the Albatross and Penguins Watching Center. Very quiet and totally clean. Lots of space, a bedroom, a living room, a small kitchen and a great bathroom with separate toilet. We felt very comfortable and would highly recommend this accommodation.

  • A lovely weekend away at this quaint and comfortable cottage. It is as described although perhaps the garden is larger and prettier than I imagined. It was perfect for us and we only wish we had booked out the whole week. Perhaps Angela would be kind enough to host us again. Thank you.

  • Lovely location with a home from home feel. Lots of thoughtful touches

  • Lovely little spot, both of us had a great time, we loved listening to the tui’s and the bell birds sing. Loved the cosyness of the cottage ! Space was crazy beautiful and we both got excited for Angela’s tips about the local areas and hotspots. The bbq was well used too!! Great little addition !! We are thinking of returning in the future!!

If you want peace and tranquility then Birdsong Bach is the place for you! For that weekend getaway to relax and unwind, this place is a must. By day you can sit on the deck and listen to the birdlife, explore the local beaches and walking tracks and by night curl up in front of the open fire and look out at the stars.
Set amongst native bush in the small township of Osborne, across the bay from Purakaunui and on the doorstep of the Orokonui Ecosanctuary, our bach is full of old school charm that oozes character. When we say character, we mean CHARACTER! Our bach does NOT have a flushing toilet. There is a quaint outhouse with a long drop toilet where you can sit and enjoy the view whilst listening to the birds!! There is a chemical toilet in the bathroom which can be used at night if you don't want to head out to the outhouse after dark.
Note: To get anywhere in the area you will need to drive. Turning left at the bottom of Albert Rd will take you to an area where you can park your car and walk to the beach. From this part of the beach you can explore Mapoutahi Pa Site, Purakaunui Bay and Canoe Beach. When the tide is low you can walk around to Doctors Point. If you turn right at the bottom of Albert Rd and drive to the bottom of Purakaunui School Rd (at the sharp corner before you head up the hill) you can park your car and walk to Purakaunui. The Orokonui Ecosanctuary is just 7km up the road where you will find a wonderful array of local wildlife and a cafe for your coffee fix! Drive 10km to Port Chalmers, an old shipping village, where you can explore the boutique shops, cafes and restaurants. There is a local supermarket where you will find everything you need for your stay.
  • What a magical experience. We loved every minute of our stay at the Birdsong Bach. Very clean, loads of lovely blankets and areas to sit to enjoy the view; so many touchs like fruit, milk, tea, coffe, shower gel etc to make it a perfect home away from home. We will be back...thank you so much.

  • Keith and Jackie’s place is a cool, unique bach in an absolutely beautiful area of Dunedin. Communication was great and I had a really awesome stay. If you are a bird person, you will love the bellbirds and tuis and this area is also home to eastern rosellas!

    Sam2020-02-12T00:00:00Z
  • Charming bach nestled amid other equally quirky abodes, with plenty of books, games and things to do on rainy days. Stunning estuary at the base of the hill was great for a run around the coastal trail. Loved our stay - but be aware that shops and cafes are a fair drive away, so bring supplies. But thanks for providing a fresh bowl of fruit Jackie and Keith. Highly recommended.

    Ni2019-11-20T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely, clean and peaceful place to stay. Beautiful walks and beaches very close by. Really enjoyed the bach with the cleanest and least smelly longdrop I've ever used!!! Romantic lighting included :) My only slightly negetive comment is that the tall people in the family (not me) struggled with the low ceiling in the kitchen area and found the downstairs double bed a bit short - but they survived! And a real bonus being able to bring our dog on holiday with us. Thank you!

    Jo2019-11-17T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect tranquil location with a load of quirky touch’s. would definitely recommend for a quiet getaway.

Classic kiwi crib overlooking the river/estuary and right on the waters edge at high tide with safe swimming. Watch the amazing bird life at low tide while relaxing on the deck or take a 10 minute walk to a lovely white sandy beach. Great for surfing, swimming, fishing and peninsula walks. Walking distance to local shop. Please note: Bathroom and single beds room are basic, rustic and quirky but crib is clean, cosy and in a beautiful location with a fantastic view! Only 30 minutes to Dunedin.
  • A great little spot right beside the water. Very relaxing.

    Emma2020-02-03T00:00:00Z
  • The Flying Angel is a cute, quirky little crib - reminiscent of the places we stayed for laid back beach holidays when we were kids. Stylish and thoughtful yet relaxed decor with a very comfortable bed in the main room. Nice and toasty due to the heating options - heatpump, heaters and electric blankets. A nice wee deck to sit on while looking at the amazing view of the estuary right on the doorstep and very close to beautiful walking tracks. Only 30mins drive into Dunedin and a good home base to easily travel further North or South for day trips. Very easy check in and out.

Breakfast and free WiFi close to town and Baldwin St but far from the hubbub! Wake up to the sound of the morning chorus. This area of town has an abundance of birdsong. Head out to the private backyard on a sunny day and have a drink or breakfast under the umbrella. We are in a relatively quiet, private spot, close to the main route into town and very close to a number of attractions and amenities. The bus stop is literally around the corner, and it's only a 10 minute drive by car to town.
A sun-drenched room to wake up in, with a very generous wardrobe, we have all the basics covered like WiFi access, FreeView TV, twin electric blankets on a queen bed, heater, fan, alarm clock and clothes horse. The bathroom next door has precisely that - a bath as well as a shower, and the window opens out onto a modest view of the plum trees. Towel and soap et cetera are provided. The kitchen and living area are open plan and look out onto the private backyard where you'll often see our hens roaming the property. We've got the usual basics covered, and you're very welcome to use the washing machine and dryer. Skin-friendly laundry powder is available for use. There is normally ample parking space on the street.
Go for a 15 minute stroll down picturesque Norwood, watching for pukeko wandering through the grass, past Forrester Park and you're in Bethunes Gulley, where you can sit down and have a picnic by Lindsay Creek or dip your feet in the water, have a BBQ, or be a child and swing on the swings (one of our favourite pastimes!). From here you can also hike up to the top of Mount Cargill which is a reasonably relaxing walk, and you'll meet plenty of locals on the way. A one minute walk from the house in the opposite direction, past the Normanby Tavern on the corner, and you're in palatial Chingford Park with Lindsay Creek continuing past the historic stables building. Wander through the trees or play a game of frisbee. Just a ten minute walk from the house in the same direction is Baldwin Street, which up until recently was considered the world's steepest street. It's certainly still the steepest short street in the world, having an impressive gradient-to-length ratio. Climb the street by foot and get a fun 'Certificate of Completion' afterward if you want. Just before Baldwin Street is the local dairy, and about a minute's walk down the road from Baldwin is the nearest of the two local fish and chip shops. A couple of minutes further along and you have a café and mini 'artisan'-style grocery store, as well as a Japanese restaurant. It's also at this point that you'll find a fuel station.
  • Fiona is a very well organised host who has thought of everything you might need. The bed is so comfy and particularly appreciated the comfort of slippers and a robe. Thank you!

    Anita2020-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely to be so close to town but feel like you're in the country, peaceful and quiet. Fiona is a very welcoming host who made me feel comfortable straight away. Her home is full of cute quirky touches like Kiwiana, vintage coasters, pet chickens and even an Op Shop! Highly recommend this place as a unique and handy retreat.

You can drive 5 minutes up to Opoho Look Out Point, where you can view the Harbor, the Peninsular, Dunedin City and the Pacific Ocean. Another 5 minutes drive can take you to the foot of Mount Cargill, where you can choose to relax in the park or climb up to enjoy a panoramic view of the whole Dunedin area and the Pacific Ocean, stretching your eyesight as far as you can at the top of the mountain. The cottage is on the west harbour 15 minute drive from Dunedin. Short drives take you to unspoilt beaches and scenic reserves. Three minutes drive takes you to historical and quirky Port Chalmers with its many pubs, cafes and galleries. Less than a kilometer away from the cottage is the start of a track through native bush to the top of Mount Cargill with panoramic views of the Otago Harbour. The newly renovated cottage is warm, sunny, cosy and comfortable.
The Cottage has been recently renovated but retains its old world charm. It has an open plan modern living space with two double bedrooms. All rooms and the deck are sunny and face across a paddock toward Mount Cargill.

  • Especially happy and warm accommodation experience. Give me the same warmth, the food is super invincible! I eat two bowls of rice every time, knowing that the bowl of haithin is very big! The two are university professors who have given me a lot of pertinent employment advice. Super like them! Mr. has been to many countries, and haithin has suffered a lot during his youth. They have been working hard to face life positively, and now have the superior living conditions, I have to learn from them! The house is very welcoming and the location is invincible. Close to downtown, next to the university. When I checked out, I quietly left without saying goodbye. Did not dare to say goodbye. I am afraid that I will cry out. Because it is really sad. I will definitely come back again. I hope that I will be two people next time. Haha. Blessing Haithin and Mr. are in good health and safe!

Modern sunny home quiet suburb. Owner works in economic development. Great local knowledge. Listing is for very comfortable queen sized room and bed. Close walking distance to Botanic Gardens (5 min), Otago University (20 min) and Stadium (20 min). Warm welcome for sure! Host is a foodie - LOVE cooking and matching wine - meals can be negotiated or referral to great cafes and restaurants. Dog lovers welcome - golden retriever puppy in residence (Daisy).
A lovely 2.5 km walk or drive from the house uphill all the way to the Signal Hill lookout for a beautiful panoramic view of Dunedin!
    Quiet sunny neighbourhood.
  • It was a wonderful stay at Fis home. The best airbnb accomodation we ever had. Fi is very friendly and helpful. Would love to stay longer there. Thank you very much.

  • I had a great stay at Fi's place. She is definitely a superhost. I was expecting to arrive at 10 pm and was a bit worried because it was going to be late but she was very helpful with that. Comunication was good. Location is good, very close to the botanic garden, which is beautiful, and easy to reach by bus. Complimentaries were very much appreciated. Highly recommended! Thank you Fi

  • My friend and I really fell on our feet by finding Jo and her amazing little home. It was so cosy, peaceful and very relaxing. Ideal for a weekend get away or as we found out, a mini health retreat! Jo was friendly and instantly made us feel welcome. What a great place to go if you need re-energising or just to get away from the chaos of the city. Highly recommended.
