Places to stay in Hector
Highly recommended by Lonely Planet, Rough Guide, DuMont and Peti Futé. Unique hydro-powered lodge 100m above the Tasman Sea. Ready access to beautiful beaches, rivers and walks. The lodge is only accessible via a 10 min walking track up the hill (REASONABLE LEVEL OF FITNESS REQUIRED). Luggage transport via prior arrangement. Self-catering (no breakfast provided). Shared bathrooms located in the main building. Due to its location the lodge is not suitable for children under 5 years of age.
The Old Slaughterhouse is a self-catering lodge and offers comfortable and affordable accommodation. Our rooms are simple but cosy and made up with linen, pillows, duvets and hot-water bottle (if needed) are provided. All rooms are surrounded by a large deck from which you can enjoy stunning views and sunsets over the Tasman Sea. Our facilities include: •Two double rooms: Comfortable double beds, fully made up •Two twin/triple rooms: The twin/triple rooms contains three fully made up single beds and can be booked either as a twin or a triple room • Shared bathroom facilities (2 showers, 2 toilets), LOCATED IN THE MAIN BUILDING, a short walk from the bedrooms •Space for tents •Shared kitchen: Our spacious kitchen is fully equipped, there are two gas hobs and an oven available, lots of pots and pans, crockery, cutlery and of course a fridge but no microwave. Tea and coffee is available at any time. All you'd need to bring is your own food.
The Old Slaughterhouse offers you a choice of either a relaxing retreat or an activity filled visit. There are many kilometres of unspoilt deserted beaches, beautiful rivers and fascinating walks in close proximity, like the Charming Creek Walkway, one of the South Island's top five short walks. If you love the outdoors, explore the numerous mountain bike and walking tracks in this area, such as the Old Ghost Road, or discover the region's mining history by visiting the Denniston Mine. Or simply sit back and relax to enjoy the tranquility and peace at this unique place, 100 metres above the sea: read a book, listen to music and feel free to do nothing. On many occasions during the summer months you can observe from our verandas Hector's Dolphins surfing and feeding in the water. It's a truly unique experience! Situated almost halfway between Punakaiki and Karamea, The Old Slaughterhouse is the ideal place to plan your day trips. Spend a day in Punakaiki to explore the iconic Pancake Rocks, and experience the wonders of the West Coast Heritage highway. In Karamea you will find the start of the Heaphy Track, one of New Zealand's famous Great Walks, and the Oparara Basin, both truly magic places to visit – even for a day. ... and then come back and sit back on the veranda to watch a breathtaking sunset. If you enjoy being surrounded by peace and tranquility, uninterrupted views of the sea, bush and sky, beautiful sunsets, birdsong and nature, then you will enjoy your stay at The Old Slaughterhouse traveller's lodge.

Granity Sands is set on the beach of the lovely, artistic village of Granity. The beach is at the bottom of the garden, and there are many iconic bush and beach walkways surrounding us.
  • Sande's place was a wonderful place to wind down and relax after the Heaphy Tramp. There is a lovely deck area and garden and the end of the garden leads onto the beach - fabulous for walks. Sande made us feel very comfortable and welcome and even porvided a pot of home made soup on our arrival. Thank you again!

  • This place is perfect. The house is so comfy, the hostess so kind and the location can’t be beat. I watched the sun set on the beach last night. Sublime. I do not want to leave!!

    Susan2020-01-30T00:00:00Z
  • As other reviews have said, this is Airbnb as it’s meant to be - a real home and a real host giving you a proper flavour of local life. Sande’s place was so characterful and colourful, with a lush garden and extraordinary views of the mountains and the coast. A truly restorative place to stay. Sande herself was an amazing host - friendly, funny, full of local knowledge and tips for days out. Her marmalade is out of this world. It’s not just for backpackers, too - I was there for an extended stay of 2 weeks and could have stayed much longer.

Situated in a rural mining settlement, 28kms from Westport on State Highway 67. A 1950's rustic family home with original decor and fixtures, a 1/2 acre section with houses each side. It has vege garden, fruit trees and hens. Goats are in the paddock backing on to native bush. It has a traditional coal/wood fire (dining room) and new log burner (living room) . Guest room has all day sun. Porch with sea view is accessed from outside. Sea is aprox 200metres from house across the highway.
Sea and bush view through bedroom windows. Fully fenced areas at the back of the house. The front porch is reached from outside. I have a big, friendly, obedient dog. Guests can use the usual kitchen appliances: stove, kettle, toaster, rice cooker, coffee maker, cutlery and crockery and fridge space Our tap water comes from a stream in the hill is used for washing/showering. Our rain water tank provides fresh clean water for drinking and cooking.
Granity is a typical, rural, westcoast settlement. It has a mild climate with few frosts in winter and some lovely hot days in summer. Most of the properties are about half an acre and its common for people to grow their own fruit and vegies and have a few chickens, or goats. The beach is 5min walk away across the railway track and over 1km long. We have the best Westcoast sunsets so bring your camera! Theres a cafe, craft shop, 2nd hand shop, library, plant nursery and museum in Granity. 4kms up the road in Ngakawau is convenience store, hotel and cafe, and Ngakawau swimming pool. also the start of Charming Creek Walkway. Hector Pottery is along this road. Stockton mine is up the hill to the north west about 15kms. It is a working, opencast mine. Granity was a typical mining town and coal is still used in many homes for warmth (open fire), water heating (wetback) and cooking (coal range oven) and on a winter night you can see the coal smoke over the houses. Charming Creek Walkway starts at Ngakawau and is an easy, short stroll along the Ngakawau River to historic mining scenery.
  • Chrissy is super kind and nice. Her dog is lovely and well- behaved. She also shared some interesting stories to us. Room is clean and spacious. Will definitely stay with her again if we travel Westport again.

  • Beautiful spot, super lovely dog.

    Steve2020-01-30T00:00:00Z
  • Excellent value in a beautiful location. Local amenities are sparse but there are a couple of places to eat and a convenience store within 2-3 km.

    Sean2020-01-28T00:00:00Z
  • We made a last minute booking but Chrissy was waiting for us with great hospitality. We felt really at home, the house was nice and clean. The location is really good. Would stay here again, and we recommend it.

    István2020-01-22T00:00:00Z
  • Chrissy is a great host and the room was quiet big and cozy. The house is very clean and tidy. I can recommend it and would book it again.

If you love the sound of the sea then this is the place to be. Very relaxed atmosphere. Free ranging chickens are amusing to watch as they wander around the garden. Our space is large and open plan. Beach front access, spacious outdoor area. Great walking and mountain bike tracks.
Buller Mines Rescue building has alot of character remaining from when it was a working building, even down to the locker room style shower and toilet. It was once what the name suggests, a mines rescue building where mine workers were trained to perform rescues. We still have a working mine up the hill from us in Stockton which can be toured with prior booking through outback tours in Westport
The Charming Creek walkway is very close and is highly recommended. There's plenty of biking and walking tracks and you can access the beach from the house. Millerton bath house is worth a look too and Deniston is not that far away, there's alot of history up there.
  • Wonderful hospitality in a beautiful setting. Tania could not have been more accommodating during my stay, well worth spending at least one night in this tranquil place! Would highly recommend!

    Steven2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • Tania has a beautifull spacious historical house with some characteristics of that period. A Nice green garden with chickens and ducks and especially Marley. You can walk directly on the beach from the garden. And not to forget an own seal colony on a rock in the sea. What do you want more. Tania was a great host.

    Arnold2020-02-04T00:00:00Z
  • We enjoyed our (too short!) stay at the house of Tania with the unforgettable view. Tania is a very nice person.

    Andy2020-01-30T00:00:00Z
  • An outstanding place to stay with an equally outstanding host in Tania. It’s a great location if you’re prepared to make the effort.Wonderful setting and garden with the chickens, ducks and the beach literally a stone’s throw away

    Tom2020-01-11T00:00:00Z
  • Really great and clean room right next to the beach. Lovely and caring hosts that gave lots of helpful tips for our travel. Thank you!

    Jule2020-01-09T00:00:00Z
  • Everything is perfect here! The hole house is placed nearby the sea, its veranda with view to their beautiful garden. Tania and Michael were amazing, unbelievable kind and very oblingingly! We had such a great time there :)

    Tobias2020-01-03T00:00:00Z
  • Many thanks to Tania and Michael for hosting me at very short notice. They have a lovely home, beautifully maintained and full of character, engendering a sense of life on this part of the West Coast in the middle of last century. It is in an idyllic spot right on the beach and blissfully quiet at night. Their hospitality was outstanding.

    Julie2019-12-31T00:00:00Z
  • I would recommend staying with Tanya. The room is lovely, you can let the window open and listen to the sound of the waves. The beach is just at the backyard and if you are lucky , there will be seals around the rock. The bathroom is huge and you can use the kitchen, so there is everything you can possibly need .

  • Chrissy is a very organized and lovely host with a beautiful house. Our room had direct access to the porch with a fantastic view at the ocean. The beds are very comfortable, so we got a good rest before heading to our next stop. The area is very quiet and idyllic. However, the cherry on top was Chrissy's handsome dog Strike who is very friendly and welcoming. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and can highly recommend the place, especially if you'd like to stay a little outside of town.

  • Amazing host, amazing place.... Really sparkling clean....Would love to visit again

    Shirish2020-03-10T00:00:00Z
  • We spent three nights at Chrissy’s place and highly recommend the experience. Chrissy was extremely accommodating with information and tips on things to do in the local area. We even enjoyed a very nice walk with Chrissy and her lovely dog Striker. You won’t find a nicer canine anywhere. Everything about the house was as good or better than advertised. The home is extremely neat and tidy and probably a very good example of a traditional West Coast New Zealand home. Full marks for a great experience. Stay there if you have a chance.

    Blair2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • Chrissy is a great host who never tires of giving tips. Your house is nicely furnished and offers everything your heart desires. We had interesting conversations and shared our travel experiences. Thanks to Chrissy, we were brought closer to the life of kiwis in remote places. The room was large, quiet at night. We were able to park the car right in front of the entrance. Communication went smoothly. Next time we would stay longer

    Rebecca2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed staying at Chrissy‘s. It was such a nice place to stay and it is very close to the sea so that we did see the sunset in the evenings which was pretty nice. Moreover, Chrissy is such a friendly and helpful host and we would recommend her to everyone. Furthermore, her dog Striker is a beautiful and cool dog and he made our stay to such s special one. All in all, the room was cute and tidy and it was a pleasure to stay with Chrissy and her dog.

  • Chrissy is a great host! She’s very knowledgeable about the local areas and also had a lot of recommendations for Abel Tasman. Her place was located in a perfect place to take a break from our long drive along West Coast. She let us use her kitchen to cook dinner. The bathroom and room were very clean! The room was very spacious and totally relaxing.

    Maxwell2020-01-10T00:00:00Z
  • Very frendly women and dog, clear communication. Everything 5 stars! The dog is inside but you can't see or smell the dog, its very clean.

  • A place with a bit of taste of the world, the sea in an enchanting setting. The benefits of camping without the inconveniences. The tree house is very nice, good beds, a nice decor and a great view. You share the kitchen and bathroom with campers: it is sometimes a bit just like equipment. Jesse was very welcome and good advice for walks. You can also dine on site, the restaurant is a friendly and pleasant place that you can access when you want. The gardens are beautiful. I recommend this place.

Our lovingly restored 1938 New Zealand Made Tanner Caravan Tanner Trailers, which operated from a base in Eden Terrace, Auckland, was one of the country’s pioneer manufacturers and promoted caravanning in the health-conscious spirit of the times: “Caravanning is a rest cure for mind and body…an investment in joyous freedom and healthful living.”

PLEASE READ DESCRIPTION AND "HOUSE RULES" THOROUGHLY BEFORE REQUESTING A RESERVATION. My place is a part of Gentle Annie Seaside Accommodation and Camping Ground. It is situated amongst native NZ bush, overlooking the ocean, and is minutes from the beach and beautiful Mokihinui river. You’ll love my place because of the views, the location, and the ambiance. My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, business travellers, families (with kids), and big groups.
The Rimu House, named after the beautiful wood it is made of, is a very comfortable home with a view. A fully equipped kitchen, and open plan style living room opens out onto a large deck putting you amongst the surrounding native virgin forest and offers spectacular views of the Tasman Sea, which is a stones throw away. A perfect spot to watch the local Hector dolphins which are often seen playing in the waves.

  • Outstanding for natural beauty and peace and quiet. We had long beach walks, weka wondering everywhere, native bush and some of the best home baking and coffee at the nearby cafe. Loved our time there and wished it could have been longer.

  • Magical spot, could not rate this more highly. Would love to stay again. Rimu house was perfect for our group of 8 people, clean & very comfortable in a gorgeous setting.

  • Thanks for a lovely time at Gentle Annie. It is a magical area with so many beautiful walks to do and the tips available at the Cowshed are very helpful. The big house was great with enough space for our son to crawl around in!

  • An exceptionally beautiful and peaceful spot. An exceptional view from the very spacious living area and generous deck also. Wonderful bushwalks within easy drives. Lovely just walking from the house to the Gentle Annie Maze or along the beach. Comfy beds and pretty well-equipped kitchen. Such a friendly vibe at the Cowshed Cafe, along with dangerously delicious brownies and a fun way to create and cook your own pizza in the great pizza oven there. Great communication with our host. We had such a good holiday.

  • Simon was very help host , and his house is fabulous with the stylish. We all love it!

    Bruce2017-04-13T00:00:00Z
  • Simon was a gracious, helpful, and generous host. His historical structure was converted into a comfortable inn using the best of materials and workmanship. His historical and Motorcycle themes were top notch and of great interest to me. The path to the beach was through a lovely garden and over a little stream. My highlight was his generosity in allowing me to ride his Aprillia race bike for one lap up and down about two Kilometers on the road in front of his inn. He recommended an authentic Pub down the road with great local dark beer, delicious pub food, and the opportunity to watch the locals shoot some pretty competitive pool. Ya gotta go there!

  • Simon is friendly, lovely and very helpful. The accomandation is very clean and really nice. I will recommend it for sure. The beach is perfect and there is absolut nobody. The house Is very big and the kitchen is great. There is a wunderful Walk ( charming creek Walk) close by the House. It was one of the best track we had in new zealand. All in all it was an Adventure 👍if i come back to New Zealand - i would go there again

  • FANTASTIC!! Simon and his Ghost Lodge were the perfect spot for my family to spend a night on the beautiful northern West Coast of NZ. Simon made check-in and check-out supremely simple and we had nothing that we were left wanting. The house has wonderful views of the ocean from the top-floor and is a superb place to catch an ocean sunset. A one minute walk through the backyard, puts you on the beach itself for a great place to dip your toes. The rooms were all wonderfully comfortable and we felt cozy from the moment we stepped in the door. Granity is a charmer of a sleepy little West Coast town and the cafe across the street served lovely espresso drinks and tasty meat pies. This listing had everything we could have wanted / needed and we were incredibly happy we chose it to be part of our trip.

Highly recommended by Lonely Planet, Rough Guide, DuMont and Peti Futé. Unique hydro-powered lodge 100m above the Tasman Sea. Ready access to beautiful beaches, rivers and walks. Self-catering (no breakfast provided). The lodge is only accessible via a 10 min walking track up the hill (REASONABLE LEVEL OF FITNESS REQUIRED). Luggage transport via prior arrangement.
Our facilities include: • Two double rooms: Comfortable double beds, fully made up. • Two twin/triple rooms: The twin rooms contain three fully made up single beds and can be booked as a twin or triple room • Shared bathroom facilities (2 showers, 2 toilets), LOCATED IN THE MAIN BUILDING, a short walk from the guest bedrooms • Space for tents • Shared kitchen: Our spacious kitchen is fully equipped, there are two gas hobs and an oven available, lots of pots and pans, crockery, cutlery and of course a fridge but no microwave.
  • Wow! What a fabulous place and fabulous hosts. David and Susanna are both so gorgeous and interesting and kind - we loved meeting and chatting with them about their place and life and whatever. Our room was very clean and tidy - we both slept well. The kitchen and bathrooms were spotless. We saw glow worms on the hike up to the house-which was special. Thanks again:)

    Poppy2020-01-17T00:00:00Z
  • A gem of a place, the walk up is rewarded with a heartfelt welcome and stunning views. David is a raconteur par excellence and Susanah is very much his equal. Clean, peaceful surroundings with the West Coast making its presence felt. Amazing!

  • Anyone seeking a cosy, affordable and special place to stay will not be disappointed with The Old Slaughterhouse. David and Susannah really made us feel at home, along with Georgie, their dog, and Sammy and Lilly, their lovely cats. Would love to return one day when next visiting the South Island.

  • Thank you very much for being so helpful and hospitable. We enjoyed the stay at the place to the fullest. A climb up the hill was an everyday bonus

  • Very charming airbnb with exceptional views of the ocean and the sunset! Very clean accommodation, nice kitchen and friendly welcome. We stayed only one night on the way to Abel Tasman. It makes a detour but the place is worth it.

    Calin2019-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • We were so lucky to have perfect weather to watch the sunset from the balcony - superb! We were quite tired after walking the Old Ghost Road but it was no problem walking up the forest path to the Old Slaughter House. Our bags were transported on a quad bike. Loved the communal lounge, kitchen and balcony areas especially the beautiful wooden furniture and outdoor seating from which to appreciate the expansive views of the ocean. The kitchen, everywhere in fact, was spotless and we had everything we needed to prepare food and drinks - tea and coffee supplied. Our room was in a separate building - tastefully furnished and with an even more impressive outlook. Very helpful and welcoming hosts. Enthusiastically recommend.

Our NEW CABIN features a queen size bed, a veranda with stunning sea views. Short walk to the main building. Due to its location the lodge is not suitable for children under 5 years of age.
The Old Slaughterhouse is a self-catering lodge and offers comfortable and affordable accommodation. Our NEW CABIN is located a short walk from the main building and its facilities. It features a queen size bed, its own veranda and a stunning view over the Tasman Sea. The shared facilities in the main building include: • Shared bathroom facilities (2 showers, 2 toilets), LOCATED IN THE MAIN BUILDING, a short walk from the bedrooms • Shared kitchen: Our spacious kitchen is fully equipped, there are two gas hobs and an oven available, lots of pots and pans, crockery, cutlery and of course a fridge but no microwave. Tea and coffee is available at any time. All you'd need to bring is your own food. • Shared, spacious living room with fire place • More verandas to sit and enjoy the view and sunsets and sometimes Hector's Dolphins
  • Amazing place!! You need to come and check it out

  • Spectacular views with a warm and inviting lodge, David and Susanna were wonderful hosts. We enjoyed the tranquility and natural setting so much that we extended our stay with two more nights. Definitely will be returning next year!

  • Great location & hospilatiy. A real Niveau place with stunning views.

    Jose2019-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • This is the most glorious, wonderful place you can stay! If you don't mind a 10 minute uphill hike to their home (David and Sussanah will pick up your luggage via ATV) you will be treated to the best ocean views imaginable, the kindest, most knowledgable hosts, great beach walks and hikes, and an atmosphere second to none. Everything is so thoughtfully arranged, and with marked attention to detail for your comfort. I strongly suggest that if you bother to go out of your way to get to Hector, you stay at least 2 nights. It seems silly to get to this magical piece of creation in the evening and leave the next morning (we ended up staying 4 nights).

  • Very nice and well-kept property in prime location, a pity that the weather was bad, on the other hand; looking out at a rough sea is also fantastic

    Rob2020-02-05T00:00:00Z
  • Susanna and David are great hostess and host - super friendly. The location is wonderful, especially the balcony where you could watch sunset and the big wave below. There is kitchen facility you could use so just bring your food.

    Charlotte2020-02-01T00:00:00Z
  • The house is beautifully situated above the sea and the location is perfect for exploring the area between Westport and Karamea. Great hosts

    Thomas2019-12-01T00:00:00Z
  • You will love this place - we did! Beautiful vistas and sunset over the sea, cozy living room, super comfy beds and friendly hosts. We will be back!

  • David and Susanna are incredible hosts. Spending time at the lodge is something we will always remember. The view is spectacular, we have never seen such beautiful sunsets. The lodge is a short hike up a hill but well worth the effort to see the wide expanse of ocean and the coastline. We stayed for 6 nights and definitely recommend staying here at least a couple of nights to experience the magic this place has to offer.

    Sal2019-03-21T00:00:00Z
  • The old slaughterhouse is as much an experience as a destination. The house is perched on the top of the world with spectacular views up and down the West Coast and the sound of the crashing waves to lull you to sleep. Got the best nights sleep I have had on my travels. If you can, stay longer than a night and enjoy a day chilling on the verandah and absorbing the peace

    Elspeth2019-03-11T00:00:00Z
  • The description is accurate. You need to be reasonably fit to walk up to the accommodation as your car has to stay in the car park. However the view is well worth the effort. nothing is too much trouble for David and Susanna and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Clean and tidy unit at the base of the Denniston Hill, away from the main road. There is a museum at the top of the Denniston Hill which shows some of the rich history of the old mines that used to operate in this beautiful part of the West Coast. It is a short drive to the top of the hill where there are fantastic ocean and mountain views. There are plenty of bush and beach walks nearby. This is a good central location to many whitebait rivers and some excellent surf casting locations.
  • Toni and John were welcoming and their place quiet and spacious.

    Andrea2020-01-10T00:00:00Z
  • Toni’s place is well laid out, comfortable and pleasant for two people. If you want to explore the north end of the West Coast it is well positioned, within easy reach of Cape Foulwind and Westport as well as Karamea. Very close are the tracks and historic areas of the Denniston Coalfields. Toni and John and friendly and welcoming, but don’t intrude if you want more privacy.

  • Toni & John are great hosts. They met us when we arrived & were welcoming & helpful. The unit is as described including a large, comfy bed, well stocked kitchen & decent wifi. The location was perfect for us, an easy 15 minute drive into town in a great rural area. There is a fantastic private space with plenty of seating & tables to enjoy the garden & the peace & quiet when all you hear is nature & the wind in the trees. Thanks Toni & John, for a great few days.
