Haibo and Maarten's house was absolutely incredible! I am so glad I didn't pass up this opportunity to be part of such a wonderful and unusual village community for two days. The house is beautiful and very comfortable and the food is fresh and delicious. The scenery is as stunning as you would expect staying on the river Li. Also, I really recommend doing a hike with Haibo's mum, she is a very impressive woman!

We had a wonderful week with Maarten and Haibo at Laojia, perfect for chilling out and getting away from the chaos. The room is large witha great sized, clean bed. The facilities are clean and everything works. One of the highlights for us was the vegetarian food, freshly cooked and delicious. We had lots of great walks in the area. Maarten Eric and Haibo are super hosts and helped every way they could. All in all, a great way to spend time in rural, unspoilt China

Wonderful, unique experience. Right in the thick of the karst mountains,. If you're planning to travel through the Guilin/Yangshuo area you should stay at LaoJia. Beautiful, rustic old place in the small village of Langshi, remote and reclusive. Haibo the caretaker is sweet and generous, Haibo's mother is a great guide (she took us on some long, challenging hikes without breaking a sweat), the cook makes delicious vegetarian meals, and the shopkeeper Mao is super cool. We had an amazing time. The place has its share of drawbacks and isn't for the type of traveler who needs things to be easy. The village is extremely small. Rural and old-fashioned. The power was out for two extended periods while we were there, and even the running water shut down for while. The place (at least during the rainy season) is incredibly humid and everything we own ended up damp. Even still, we loved every minute. Some new laws limiting boat traffic make it a bit tough to get around the river, so it's not so quick to get around. Four-hour hike to XingPing or one hour by bus to Yangshuo from Yangdi Harbor just up the road.

I stayed at Laojia for two nights in June and thoroughly enjoyed it.. Every part of my stay was amazing and well-organised. The fact that there weren't any other tourists in the village was the highlight of my trip. I truly experienced a slice of China - nothing commercial, nothing touristy, no vendors or bamboo-ride promoters! Just a local village where you can truly experience the everyday life of locals in that area. Maarten & Haibo were SO helpful with every single detail. It was such a wonderful experience to stay in a traditional house - the wooden doors and courtyard were my favourite! I went hiking in the mountains with Haibo's mom, wow!!! Can't get any closer to nature and wonderful views. Fruit & vegetables were all bought from the local market, I loved the organic and basic lifestyle there. What a pity that I could stay for two nights. Will certainly visit again in the near future and stay a bit longer.I would recommend Laojia to anyone who's in need of peace and quiet and enjoys travelling off the beaten track.

LaoJia is a magical place. It was a joy to be hosted by Haibo and Maarten who are thoughtful and kind. Arriving from the boat, I had a wonderfully warm welcome from Haibo. On the second day, a hike to the mountains with goatman and Maarten was a very special experience. When it rained, the little living room next to the bedroom was a haven for reading and writing. Each evening, after a delicious dinner cooked by Xiaomo, locals and friends would drop by for tea and a chat. You are quickly included into the conversation and the rest of the world feels far away. I enjoyed every moment. Should I ever be fortunate enough to find myself back in Guangxi, I know exactly where I will go.

Location is magnificient in small authentic Chinese village at the border of a beatiful part of the Li river. We were welcomed in very friendly manner by local host, who was also very helpful with a variety of services (transportation, guided hike etc). Freshly cooked delicious Chinese meals were available for a small fee. Overall we had a great stay here.

Fantastically authentic, charming home that Maarten & Haibo have made for a real getaway from all the big cities. Myself and my friend had a great stay at Laojia. After spending most of our time in China going from one city to another, this place provided a much needed peaceful break in beautiful surroundings. The guidebook & communication from Maarten and Eric was very thorough & helpful prior to our arrival. During our stay, Haibo was a lovely host - he was very considerate & we enjoyed chatting to him! The cooked food was great as was the boat ride along the Li river to get to and from the village itself. I also need to mention the highlight of our short stay - a hike up into the mountain with Haibo's mum, which was a lovely way to spend a few hours and take in the spectacular views. We had a brilliant stay and as much as the accommodation itself was really good, it was the location and interaction with the locals that really made it special. After many days in busy chinese cities, we arrived to Laojia to rest... and we definetely enjoyed it. The place is charming, beautiful landscapes, Xiaomo's food is incredibly tasty and Haibo is a really nice person, helpful, sweet and very communicative. Haibo helped us to arrange all the activities and everything was perfect! I highly recommend to buy a chinese sim card (not at the airport or train station), to stay in contact with Haibo (he doesn't use (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) or (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN)). 100% recommended!

Beautiful location as can be seen in the photos (they tell the truth). Unfortunately due to the weather we weren't able to get much hiking in but still enjoyed wandering around the village. Maarten was not there during our stay however Eric was and he was an excellent host! We only stayed one night but plan to come back in the future it was so great.

This was a really cute & well decorated apartment; they made the most of a small space. Finding the building from the Metro station & checking in was a breeze with the host's detailed instructions. The bathroom was very clean & there was plenty of hot water. The neighborhood was lively & there were awesome shops and restaurants nearby of all varieties - we enjoyed an authentic experience of living like a local. I would suggest investing in a stronger wifi signal, but we were able to get online sporadically. The only big thing that this apartment lost points for was the uncomfortable bed - it was so hard that we could literally knock on it ...a more comfortable mattress would make this apartment an A+ for the price. :)
