The Shepherd's Hut is a really unique place to stay and a fantastic experience. It's clean, beautifully decorated and well kitted out. It's surroundings of a private patio and pond are idyllic - Grant (August '18) Hut in the Hollow provided a sweet little slice of tranquility, among the wildlife. High quality and comfortable in the hut. The patio/garden area with the pond is great for eating out on at breakfast and sitting looking at the stars at night. Very impressed - Kerry (August '18)
#HutintheHollow has all mod cons. You have a extra long super comfy double bed in a self contained bedroom/lounge/kitchen. You have a wood burning stove and logs for those chilly nights. We will set the fire for you should you wish to use it. Extra logs are available free of charge. There is also a portable radiator to take the chill off. There is a comfy chair and a cracket stool and a fold up table for eating. Whilst it is a Shepherd's Hut there are plenty of electric points and wi fi. The Shepherd and his flock would be well impressed #HutLife There is a separate bathroom with flushing toilet, sink and full shower. There is a beautiful secluded garden and pond. The garden is a great little sun trap.
15 minute walk into the historical City of Durham. You can do this through North End and down Western Hill or through the beautiful Flass Vale a stunning wooded area in the centre of Durham City. It is 20 minutes on your return and it’s quite hilly. You are a 7 minute walk to the nearest Sainsbury's.
  • The hut really is a peaceful escape with all the advantages of the city and beaches near. We took advantage of both, we bought our dog with us and she tucked perfectly under the bed! Durham city was really dog friendly. The facilities and special touches that Richard had added to the hut were just gorgeous, it is warm, cute and homely. Thank you Richard.

  • A lovely charming little hut. We didn't miss a thing, and had a great time. Very recommended.

  • The Hut in the Hollow is a very beautiful place to stay, it is full of character and cosy but has everything you need-we even had milk left for us and some snacks were provided. Richard is a fantastic host who responds very quickly to messages and my partner and I would be very happy to stay again.

  • It’s not surprising to see so many good reviews for the hut. It is a fantastic place, decorated so stylishly and thoughtfully. Location wise was excellent, we had no bother walking in and out of the city centre. Icing on the cake was the flawless communication. Cannot recommend highly enough!

  • This property is an amazing find! So many cute touches with their style, such a cosy place not far from the centre of Durham at all. Amazing for a much needed and relaxing holiday

  • Lovely little place 25mins walk from the town centre a perfect getaway combined with my husbands graduation

    Rachel2020-01-10T00:00:00Z
  • A true oasis! Extra well organised, tidy, optimal use of the space, cosy! The hosts provided freshly ground coffee, an excellent selection of tea, fresh milk... I really hoped I could have stayed longer, and enjoy the wooden stove and the private garden. Fully recommend!

Swallows' Barn is a beautiful converted granary 7 miles west of historic Durham City. It offers fabulous views over rolling farmland; spacious 4 star accommodation; country walks; open fires and a menagerie of livestock. Perfect for all the family. Dogs are welcome by prior approval at a small additional fee (see house rules).
Swallows Barn boasts sleeping for eight with 2 spacious main bedrooms (one with en-suite bathroom) and a third with 2 sets of adult sized bunk beds. Well away from the sounds of the city, the nights are very quiet, but mornings are often announced by the local cockerel, strutting his stuff in the farmyard. While this is fun for the hens and early birds, he can be locked up by request if a sleep-in is required! As well as the main bedroom benefiting from an en-suite, there is a family bathroom with bath and shower. The large, stone flagged kitchen area is well equipped with everything you could need including a microwave, dishwasher, and an electric cooker and grill. There is a large scrubbed pine dining table and a cozy seating area with a wood burning stove adding to the feel of a large comfortable country kitchen. The sunny sitting room has magnificent views over the hills and farmland. There is a large, well stocked wood burning fireplace and comfy sofas as well as a TV and DVD player. The washing/drying room next to the kitchen contains space for hanging clothes as well as a washing machine, drier, an ironing board and iron. Please note prices include all bedding and towels.
Guests can enjoy the tranquillity of the property. There are many rural walks in the locality with abundant bird life and animals. Swallow's Barn is only a couple of minutes drive from the village of Langley Park. Here you can find many local amenities such as grocery stores, take away food outlets and local pubs and restaurants. County Durham and the surrounding area has many local attractions to suit all ages including: The historical city of Durham with it's Cathedral and Castle. Beamish Museum, the beautiful Wear Valley as well as nearby Diggerland! A little further afield are Alnwick Castle (famous as the set of Hogwarts in the Harry Potter movies), Hadrian's Wall, Gateshead's Metro Centre (A shopper's paradise!) and the interesting cities of Newcastle and Sunderland. The North East also has fantastic beaches in Northumbria, Sunderland and East Durham.
  • Couldn’t ask for more: description was accurate, great communication, and a lovely place. Top notch

  • Comfortable and peaceful place to stay. Hosts very welcoming. Plenty of good walking straight from the house and nearby and only a short drive to Durham

  • The clue is in the listing title. Caroline was a super host and we were made very welcomed. Easy check in and out. Very spacious and clean place. Will happy book again.

    Roger2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful host and cottage! My family and I stayed at Caroline's for three days in January 2020 to visit Durham city. She made sure someone was around to welcome us when we arrived, and had a delicious home-baked cake waiting. The cottage is very spacious, comfortable and warm (important in the winter!), and is set in some beautiful countryside. Would highly recommend. Thanks for a lovely stay, Caroline.

    Keziah2020-01-11T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely converted barn in the countryside but very close to Durham - we managed a lovely walk (with 4 children) and then trip to the cathedral in one day. Very relaxing - thank you

  • Beautiful place to stay for a while, thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, excellent host.

    William2019-12-08T00:00:00Z
  • We loved Swallows' Barn. Two happy families together. The space and facilities were great, with good pre-visit messages from Caroline and all we expected when we arrived. Nearby Beamish and Durham were fantastic.

    RIchard2019-11-10T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely location, convenient for Durham which very well served our needs. Accommodation was spacious and sparkling clean and the host extremely welcoming. If I had a downside comment - it would be the morning ‘cow’ alarm from the sheds nearby but that must be expected on a working farm. We had a lovely couple of days. Thank you.

Truly luxurious hideaway, with central riverside location in a newly converted historic building in Durham City. For weekend break / longer holiday, luxury apartment sets new standard in stylish self-catering. Secure Parking, Tripadvisor recommended.
Recline in style in our Durham holiday accommodation - There's plenty of room to relax in the exceptional quality furnishings in this light and airy apartment: you can sink into the red leather couch, or stretch out on the rather stylish Drift chair. Above the marble fireplace is a wall-hung widescreen digital TV on which you can explore 50+ channels of television and radio, or watch movies on DVD. If you're more inclined to shut your eyes, you'll get the best from the state-of-the-art sound system on which you can also play CDs. When night falls, you can set the mood with the lighting and have a candlelit dinner at the elegant glass dining table. The brand new kitchen facilities are second-to-none. There's everything from a freezer to a fish slice. Unwind after a day in Durham! This is the perfect place to revive yourself after a hard day attacking the culture, shops and restaurants of Durham. There's a Victorian-style free-standing slipper bath, and a separate hydromassage shower enclosure. The bath is thoughtfully positioned so that there's somewhere to place your drink, and has a hand-held shower as part of the gleaming chrome plumbing. The separate shower enclosure features a powerful yet fully contollable jet system for your amusement. You can pamper yourself with the exclusive toiletries provided, get dry again using the giant plush towels, and if you can't be bothered to get dressed, wrap yourself in a cosy bathrobe. Relax in Durham Apartment: the comfortable bedrooms - The main bedroom has a spacious Art Deco-inspired double bed, complemented by a generous wardrobe and chest of drawers. There's a flat-screen digital television so you can laze in bed and watch TV, or listen to the radio channels which are also provided. A spiral staircase leads from the living area to a second bedroom upstairs. Here you'll find ample space for two further guests, who can choose to sleep in two single beds, configurable as a double if they're feeling friendly. Again, there is plenty of wardrobe and drawer space. A TV/Radio sits in the corner opposite the attractive day-bed which is covered with millions of cushions to provide a cosy nest. All the beds have high thread-count Egyptian cotton sheets, welcoming pillows and luxurious duvets.
On the doorstep of history, in the vibrant centre of Durham Moonlight Apartment is on the second floor, overlooking the historic streets of Durham and next to the River Wear. The Cathedral and Castle are a 5-minute stroll away, which will take you past the city's interesting shops and wide variety of restaurants. As well as traditional establishments, there are chic cosmopolitan bars and eateries, and Durham's impressive Gala Theatre complex is just round the corner. Further afield, a 20 minute drive will take you to the prestigious Beamish Open Air Museum, or if you can't live without serious shopping, Gateshead's Metro Centre is similar distance away. There's a convenience store within 2 minutes of your front door, with M&S and Tesco reachable in 5 minutes. Durham's Leisure Centre with gym and indoor swimming pool is less than 10 minutes' walk, and the railway and bus stations are within easy walking distance.
  • The apartment is amazing, the photos don’t do it justice, it’s beautiful. Ray has thought of everything and I mean everything. The location is fantastic and if it’s available for your dates then book it , don’t hesitate as I’m sure it’s not free very often . Will definitely come back

    Sharon2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • Great flat and hosting, would stay again and recommend. Location could not be better for a break in Durham, lots of great restaurants and the gala theatre right on the doorstep.

  • Really classy place. Beautiful claw foot bath tub. Special touches like butter, muffins, juice, milk, bottle of wine and carafe of sherry waiting for new guests. PERFECT LOCATION!

  • Ray is an excellent host. Moonlight apartment is a stylish, well equipped city centre flat with secure parking. Ray greets guests on arrival and provides generous, thoughtful welcome touches; he is available to provide information before and during your stay.

    Angela2019-12-19T00:00:00Z
  • Ray and his place are both great! I was dropped off by a taxi driver a couple of blocks away from the apartment and Ray was kind enough to come out and find me! Very central location and plenty of places to eat and drink within walking distance. We had a great little dinner at the Court Inn, and on my second night had a great time at the pub at the Dun Cow Inn, both within easy walk-in night distance. The apartment was clean, lots of windows, very thoughtful touches like a pint of milk, some croissants and jam so I didn’t have to worry about getting a bite to eat in the morning before heading out. There was also a bottle of wine which was a terrific thing after a long journey. I highly recommend Ray’s place!

  • The hosts made us very welcome and made lovely, kind efforts to make our stay a special time for us while visiting our family. The house was perfect for us as a place for our family to gather and relax. The house was delightfully warm and cosy despite being wintery weather outside and had everything we needed - even with baking and preparing Christmas meals. We had a wonderful stay and felt very much at home. We also purchased one of the hosts lovely tapestries when visiting Ushaw College which is now hanging happily at home in New Zealand.

Simple, clean, comfortable single bedroom. Town centre is about a half hour walk or 5 minutes on regular bus routes for a small fair. There is a bus stop two minutes walk away. Local shops and amenities are all a very short walk away, located on front street. I live alone and am pretty laid back. I'll try to accomodate you if i can. You'll have a key so come and go as you please. I'm out quite a lot so you can make your self comfortable. Mi casa es vuestra casa!!!

The apartment is quiet, chilled and a perfect base for a visit to Durham for both business & pleasure. Also now has WIFI and a full Sky Package including Sports & Access to Netflix. (Due to a technical fault Sky is unavailable till the 13th Feb). The apartment is a great place, we spend alot of time here as a family with our two kids but its not 5 star. We hope the price reflects this but we still hope to provide a good standard of living.
Has everything you need for a comfortable stay and a short distance from the city. Close to local shops, take aways & local gym.
Meadowfield is a busy, friendly suberb on the main road & buss route into Durham city.

WALKING DISTANCE TO KYNREN IDEAL ALTERNATIVE TO A HOTEL for anyone working in the area. This beautifully fitted two bedroom first floor apartment is situated in the centre of Bishop Auckland. All amenities, bars, and shops are within walking distance, very well located as a base for lots of sight seeing including: the seaside, the Lake District, Hamsterley forest , Durham City and not forgetting Bishop Aucklands castle and Kynren.
Would be good accommodation for anyone working in the area , giving plenty of home comforts instead of a hotel . There are two double bedrooms, both with crisp fresh bedding for a very comfortable nights sleep, small kitchen area and generous size lounge , The bathroom has a bath with a shower over it . All brand new fittings, carpets and decor . The apartment offers cosy accommodation for 4 adults and has 1 designated parking space in the entrance courtyard. All basic essentials are included.
The biggest thing for the location is the walking distance access to Kyren the fantastic medieval show which is an outdoor epic tale of England this has proved to be very popular along with viewing tower in the marketplace and Bishop Auckland Castle. There are some very popular tea shops in the marketplace and some very nice places to eat on an evening just a very short drive away.

  • An absolute gem of a property, fresh smelling, beautifully clean, warm and with cosy beds. Friendly communication, a great stay.

  • This is an absolute gem of a place to stay. Quite unexpected. Nigel and Ashley are fantastic hosts. The flat is immaculate and was lovely and warm when we arrived (Nov 2019) There was even milk, bread, butter and jam, plus cereal there. Very tastefully decorated. Very impressed. Highly recommended. When your sat nav says you have arrived at your destination, ignore it. Drive straight on, to the left of the shopping centre car park and straight down to almost the bottom. Just past the last lamp post on the left, is a set of gates. Drive in there for access to the property and park in one of the spaces. It was the easiest way to find it, thanks to Nigel. I can't recommend the property enough and Bishop Auckland has a lot to offer.

Cleanliness is our priority and all rooms are being thoroughly cleaned daily using a powerful steam cleaner and carpet washer. The Amber Room, with a super king size bed, is set in a historic Durham townhouse. You'll be just five minutes walk from the cathedral, market place and university. The room sumptuous bedding and plush Egyptian cotton towels along with a desk, chairs, super-fast broadband and stylish furniture. Enjoy private landscaped gardens and full use of a well equipped kitchen.
There are two large bedrooms available to book which are completely private. Other rooms have shared use, inc. the kitchen, library (which also has views of the Cathedral) and lounge. The kitchen comes complete with silverware, crockery, cooking essentials and professional espresso coffee making facilities.
79 Hallgarth Street is next door to the Victoria Inn, one of Durhams best pubs, and directly opposite The Rabbit Hole restaurant. Durham city centre is 5 minutes walk away and Durham University is 5 minutes in the other direction. Some of the best river bank walks that Durham is famed for start just over the road from the property.
  • A beautiful place, huge room, great bed, more a boutique hotel than a typical airbnb. Full kitchen, espresso machine, and even a decanter of single malt. 5 stars!

Bright Country Bedroom in Low Willington, Easy access to Durham Univercity/Castles/ Roman Fort and Kynren (the popular spectacular show of an epic tale of England).
Our home is great for a single person, couples or a family with a young child. We are located in Willington, a little quiet village in County Durham, England. It is about 15minutes of beautiful picturesque drive to Durham city center and University and vice vassal to Bishop Aukland. It is also near 'Wear Valley' with River Wear running by it to enjoy lovely walks, treks, scenery and it is on an easy access to Castles, 'Vinovium' Roman Fort and within walking distance to local pubs serving food and Sunday roasts, local grocery shops, cafes, and take away food. It is also on easy access by bus to many of Durham sights and night life, and to neighbouring towns such as Bishop Auckland,Crook and Crook, some of the towns nearby. The house is a semi-detached and has three bedrooms. Two bedrooms are used by the hosts, the spare double bedroom is ideally suitable to guests on a short break to Durham. It has a sitting area, plus central Wi-Fi. We have young children ( Kids very cute, love people and guests love them !! ). However there is potential for noise particularly between 7-8am and between 5-8pm (because of activities during school run and bedtime routine). This is a warm, clean and bright lively house with living room, fully equipped kitchen, bathroom and gardens. There is hot water throughout the day. The guest bedroom looks out onto a green and front garden where you can chill out, read a book during the summer and enjoy the sunshine. * Shared bathroom - you can relax in a warm bath at the end of a days sightseeing - aromatherapy oils, candles and fluffy towels provided! We only have one bathroom which we use with no problem as we give priority to our guests, so don't let that defer you. * Tea/Coffee and biscuits on arrival. * I can provide cereals, yogurt and fruits, choice of teas. (Please inform host if you will like this and of any food intolerances in advance so that they can be catered for). * we are well traveled hosts and can provide lots of recommendations on places to go and things to do in Durham and in the rest of the country. We look forward to welcoming and making your stay here most enjoyable one.
This is a beautiful and quiet neighbourhood, countryside yet on easy access route to surrounding towns and lively Durham city center

  • It is beyond my expectations to stay in this house

    Tsz ON2019-07-14T00:00:00Z
  • Staying with Dawn was a real pleasure, not only because her house is wonderful, but also because she and her dog Tuppy have been very nice and friendly. The house is very comfortable, stylish and clean, with a lot of space for your things in the kitchen, in the bathroom, in your room and everywhere you might need it. The owner is very thoughtful, and, for example, though there is a kettle in the kitchen, there is also an extra one in your room - in case you will want to enjoy the tea on your own. It is only one example of many small details that all together made my time there just perfect. The house is situated close to a bus-stop and it takes 10 or 15 minutes by bus to get to Durham, the bus runs every twenty minutes. Though I had to go to Durham every day it didn't cause any inconvinience (of which I was a bit afraid before coming there) and was more like a nice trip on the second floor of double-decker bus. What is even more important than good accomodation is the owner herself - so caring, thoughtful, friendly and hospitable, Dawn answered all my questions about the place, the area, the country and its culture, she gave me lots of advises where to go, what to see and what to eat - and I can definitly say that she was my guide to the world of english culture for which I'm very grateful. I enjoyed every moment of staying there and would definitely recomend it to anyone who is looking for a place at that area.

Guests Like to stay in my House because it's close to The Business School, Ustinov, John Snow, Stephenson,JB College, Botanic Garden and PR 2 (Park and Ride Howlands). Besides, it's a brand new House and it's very spacious and clean. Guests also like that we offer breakfast and professional Chinese meals with a small charge.
The Neighbourhood around here is very friendly and helpful. Most of them are professionals.
  • This room is in a lovely house and the family are very careful to keep it nice. I was in a hurry and they offered to collect me from the station and provide a lovely meal (at additional cost). It took me 10-15 minutes to walk to Trevelyan college which is a very convenient distance if you’re visiting one of the hill colleges.

  • I received a very warm welcome from Samantha and her family. The house is lovely, in a quiet, residential street.

    Aileen2020-02-07T00:00:00Z
  • Via Samantha’s excellent communication, I found the place fairly easily and soon as I was greeted by her husband, I really felt at home there. Samantha and her family were great company and we ending up having many interesting conversations. I was also offered breakfast and a Chinese meal by her Husband who is a professional chef, who prepared me a vegetarian Chinese meal which I thought was delicious. Overall Samantha was an excellent host and I’m greatly looking forward to returning sometime in the near future

    Harry2020-01-31T00:00:00Z
  • Nice place, pretty quiet. The bathroom is big and large. I would be pleasure to recommend it to my friends.

    Emily2020-01-25T00:00:00Z
  • The family are some of the most wonderful people you'll ever meet and people I now consider friends. To add to this, the accommodations were impeccably clean, the home itself is beautiful and in a very tranquil neighborhood just outside of town (you can walk there in just about 20 minutes, and there is a bus stop just a 7 minute walk away that has buses that go straight to the shops, as well), and they really do try to help you in knowing the layout of the city if there are places you specifically need/want to go in it. I cannot recommend their place enough. I plan to go back and visit Durham in the future and this will be where I stay (plus, because I didn't get the chance to eat the AMAZING food I saw them preparing, I want to sample it, as well). Honestly, you really should stay here. You won't regret it!

  • Great little home from home. I needed somewhere to stay for me and my senior dog while we were in-between selling and buying a house. Didn't want to stay in a hotel so wanted an entire place to ourselves to relax more. Just right for what we needed. Small artificial turfed courtyard which was nice. Cosy lounge with smart TV which was a nice bonus for a tech person like myself too. Never had a problem parking outside the property too. Thanks.

  • Joanna was a fantastic host and easy to communicate with. The cottage was perfect for myself, my partner and our baby. There was a cot provided for us and the space downstairs was great too. Everything was clean, the kitchen was fully equipped and the living room was cosy. The bedrooms were made up very well and the beds were both comfortable. Highly recommend!

  • Lovely accommodation, pleasantly presented in a tranquil setting. Dog friendly which was a major attraction for us. The local amenities are good, the local pub is excellent and the surrounding area has so much to offer. Would love to visit again and use the property in the future.

    Simon2019-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • Joanna's house is lovely it is extremely clean. It is full of everything you need and is in a great location.

    Stephanie2019-07-22T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed at Joanna's place for 3 nights. It is clean and very well appointed, as per the listing, with lots of living and storage space for up to four people. The jacuzzi bath is a nice touch, although do note that the bathroom is downstairs. As a couple we used the rear bedroom, which was very quiet. We didn't notice any noise from the nearby pub. The front bedroom is next to the road, but traffic volume was light both in the day and at night. The host Joanna does not appear to live locally, but was helpful with instructions for finding and accessing the property beforehand, along with details of an emergency local contact in case of need. There were plenty of parking options nearby, both on- and off-street. Recommended.

    Andrew2019-07-16T00:00:00Z
  • Very speedy communications, super clean spacious house. Great.

    Mark2019-07-12T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely cottage, with everything you'll need, in the middle of a small Durham village. Handy to drive into Durham and see all the sights of Northumbria. Some nice pubs a short walk away, we liked The Ship Inn, which was the furthest, about 800 yards from our door the best. Joanna and Gary responded very quickly to all our needs and we would highly recommend a stay there. Great value for money.

    Robert2019-07-04T00:00:00Z
  • The house was really cosy and in a nice quiet location (but close to nearby Spennymoor town centre). It was spotless and had 2 good sized bedrooms with very comfy beds. The kitchen was fully equipped with all you need and the bathroom has both a shower and a jacuzzi bath which was lovely to relax in). Free wi-fi is available and the tv in the lounge (also cosy) worked well. Plenty of on street parking is available with no restrictions (I parked outside the house pretty much every day of my stay). If visiting the area again I would have no hesitations of staying at Joanna's house again.

  • 3 nights in Middlestone later and we are feeling refreshed and relaxed. Thank you to Tony and Jane for being great hosts. The house was perfect for our needs. We didn't go out because we were so comfortable, particularly with the wood burners. Even though one of the nights was New Year's Eve, it was very quiet and wonderfully dark in the bedroom.

  • Great pub across the road , great food , shall return

    Gary2019-12-01T00:00:00Z
  • Nice quiet village with plenty of countryside and closeby attractions. Checkin was very easy, being able to collect the key from their pub directly opposite the cottage. The cottage itself was beaming with character, with log fire already set up to light, spotless and clean. Will definitely be staying again soon.

  • I unexpectedly needed to help out some family in Crook, so booked Carol's place quite last minute. It was ideally located for exploring the surrounding area, and it was a really comfortable place to relax after being out and about all day. I would recommend taking your warmest pyjamas as the heating is on a timer and so it is cold at night. The check-in/-out process was easy.

  • This was a lovely find and ideal for us attending a graduation at Durham. The house was very clean and tidy and the four of us who stayed had a good nights sleep ready for the early start the following morning.

Welcome to my Place, Here we have a large semi detached house with woodland views to the back and front only minutes walk from the old Miners railway lines which provided miles of country walks
The house can be found on the outskirts of Esh Winning Village but within easy walking distance to local shops and a few minutes walk to the local bus stop. The village has plenty to offer, including 2 supermarkets, post office, pubs, butchers, bakers and cafe, Local bus service to Durham which is approx 5.5miles
  • A homely place to be - just what was needed.

  • Anthony's place was as described. It was homely and had many lovely personal touches. It was easy enough to get into Durham city when we required and was a quiet stay for family time. Definitely would recommend.
