  • Simple but practical space, with everything one needs, in a perfect location looking out on Stromness Bay. It doesn't get better than having morning coffee in an armchair by the window as the morning ferry sails out.

The hut has a 13 amp power point, small heater two single beds with bedding and towels. There is an outside shed with your own toilet. There is a shared shower. A shared kitchen two ring hot plate, microwave and cooking utensils. This is camping with no thrills .WIFI can be accessed from the kitchen. We do have a variety of poultry Chicken Cockerels Geese and Guinea fowl free range. We do not allow smoking anywhere and no pets.
I built the hut to be able to provide budget camping to withstand Orkney weather.
Village shop Post Office with cash point opens Monday to Saturday 8am-6pm Sunday 10am-5pm within walking distance 0.4 of a mile from here.
  • We stayed at John's cabin for 4 nights in August. John was kind and friendly and so helpful about the local area and even gave us a lift to Birsay and lent us bikes to cycle back. The beds were comfy and the space was clean and cosy. We had our own bathroom and the kitchen facilities we plenty to cook simple meals. If you are looking for a simple stay somewhere wild and beautiful, this is perfect! We'd definitely stay again.

    Helen2019-08-30T00:00:00Z
  • Staying at John and Victoria’s will remain one of the best Airbnb experiences we ever had. They are so welcoming and helpful, and we had a wonderful time talking and sharing with them. Also, we simply LOVED staying in the hut which is so comfortable despite the frequent rain. We are already thinking of coming back next year. If you’re looking for some place to escape from too much civilisation and phone signals, this is the place to be.

    Melissa2019-08-19T00:00:00Z
  • Please see previous review. It’s lovely. We would recommend to anyone and will be going back next year.

    Oliver2019-07-26T00:00:00Z
  • The camping hut is a cute little space, beautifully presented inside and out and with a stunning view. It’s a little bit of paradise if the weather is kind and even If it’s not! John is a great host and has created some wonderful holiday accommodation with a lot of creative touches.

    Rachel2019-07-22T00:00:00Z
  • John and Victoria are hosts that went above and beyond to make stay and wonderful and memorable experience. We couldn’t want for kinder, more generous or friendly hosts. The camping hut is in a beautiful location with stunning views overlooking sea and islands. It was warm cosy and tucked away with its own enclosed garden. Facilities including shower and private loo exceeded expectations. The kitchen was well equipped and impeccably clean. We would recommend this to anyone looking to explore this beautiful corner of the world.

    Oliver2019-07-20T00:00:00Z
  • John welcomed us and was always with great tips to the side. The little hut is awesome. Simple and sufficient. Great view of the sea. Kitchen, WiFi, shower and toilet about 30m away. We would come back anytime.

Our house (Strathyre) is very much a well- loved family home, and is homely and comfortable. Its peaceful and spacious inside and out, and is filled with years of happy memories/collections from around the world Fishing, beaches, birdwatching, ancient sites NB - once you book, more detailed information becomes open to you on this site including directions, keys etc. Aurora Borealis from below my house https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9U6H_DGE1mN8gE6HptNrlw/videos
NB - START JUNE- END SEPTEMBER - WEEKLY+ BOOKINGS ONLY SAT -SAT OR ending OR starting on SAT (split weeks - 3 or 4 night bookings) Strathyre is a spacious family 'strictly non-smoking' home set in 5 acres of land with views over Boardhouse Loch. Plenty room inside and out for 6 people. One twin and two double bedrooms, large sitting room and large kitchen which WAS the original house 200 years ago! There is an ensuite shower room off double bedroom and a family bathroom, both of which are NOW totally remodelled as of October 2016!! We are sure a welcome updating! Guests have access to all areas of the house and land. There is one locked cupboard in the house where we store extra supplies etc. There is wifi throughout the house (though not fast as per all of Orkney!), TV and CD player. THERE IS NO DISHWASHER OR WASHING MACHINE. This is due to plumbing issue in kitchen so apologies about this, but we have no other option as our personal items are locked off in room with washing machine. We will endeavour to provide as much information as guests require/need for the perfect stay! We have a person locally who will be on hand for entry/departure and/or any problems. Orkney is lucky to have so many ancient sites of interest - Stone Age, Bronze Age, Vikings etc. Birdwatching, loch/sea fishing (free - no permits required) and beachcombing are fabulous. There are wonderful festivals - folk, classical and science. Not to mention pure air, incredible skies/seascapes and of course the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights!) You really need to have a car to stay in Strathyre or indeed Orkney as there is very limited public transport. Ample parking at the house. Good ferry connections to Scrabster and Aberdeen. Airport in Kirkwall where car hire is possible. Orkney in summer has very little darkness at all - very special. Of course the contrary is true in winter! This is a well loved family home - NOT a customised 'holiday home' so please expect, 'bumps, bruises and idiosyncrasies!' It is a very old house with natural stone walls and a wood burning stove and as a result can be DUSTY. If you have a DUST aversion perhaps this is not the house for you! Once you book exact location and all details on how to access the house including the very important house manual becomes available to you on Airbnb site. Please download this. Minimum 3 night bookings at other times. Why not stay at my sons beautiful Airbnb in Tain on way North? https://abnb.me/19vbLpjt0O

  • Irene's place is great - super location, excellent warm house and a fantastic host. We stayed in the middle of a gale but with the fire lit, home made bread from the aga and a glass of something warm made the visit very special

    Adrian2019-10-28T00:00:00Z
  • Irene’s place is conveniently located to all parts of the Orkney Islands. We travelled here, there and everywhere!

    Bethany2019-10-12T00:00:00Z
  • What a beautiful house and location and view. I cannot recommend Irene’s place highly enough if you are looking for a peaceful rural stay in Orkney, but with all the amenities of a modern house. Its close to the Neolithic and other historic sites and only about a 15-20 minute drive to either Kirkwall or Stromness - the latter of which is a beautiful little town. Be sure to go for a meal and drink at The Stromness Hotel lounge bar overlooking the harbour. But back to Irene’s place - we couldn’t have found a better place for our small family to stay for a few days. It is huge if you want some space to spread out and just lovely. Perfect.

    James2019-09-20T00:00:00Z
  • This is a very spacious house in a beautiful and quiet location. It has a comfortable and lived in feel. The host was supportive without being intrusive. A "self clean " policy is followed which might not be to everyone's taste. The instructions on how to find the property were clear, but the access is tight and quite blind so make sure you have a good idea where you are looking for first.

    John2019-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic house, warm and family friendly. Great location, minutes from Brough of Birsay and Marwick Head. Our kids loved the toys and we loved the quiet. Highly recommended

    Tal2019-08-21T00:00:00Z
  • A great home in a great place. Thoroughly recommend both Strathyre and Orkney.

    Graham2019-08-17T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely, friendly welcoming home. Perfect to get away from it all and very convenient for some of Orkney's best neolithic sites.

    Alastair2019-08-11T00:00:00Z
  • A charming house where you feel like you're at home. The absence of a machine was not an inconvenience given the presence of a laundry in Kirkwall. To advise traditional musical evenings at The Reel café in the center of Kirkwall, accessible mostly to children.

Just no dogs on bed please. And important to clean up after dog including outside (I can provide some poo-bags if requested).
We are in a rural location in between Stromness and Kirkwall the two major towns on Orkney. Its quiet and we are within a National Scenic designated area.
  • So Lovely !

    Lauren2019-10-10T00:00:00Z
  • Langwell Bothy is small but my husband & I found it to be quite comfortable; Elaine & Nigel have made as much as is possible of the available space. The house is easy to find, and within several minutes’ drive of the Stromness port . The view out over the water to Hoy is beautiful, especially at sunset. The rural setting is peaceful, and the Neolithic sites are within a short and scenic drive. We’re glad we chose Langwell Bothy for our visit to Orkney!

    Sandra2019-10-07T00:00:00Z
  • The Bothy was perfectly situated in the country, with a lovely view from the bedroom in the morning. The little kitchen was perfect to enjoy some local bread at breakfast. The accommodations were spotless and comfortable. If you are planning a visit to Orkney, I would highly recommend staying at Langwell Bothy.

    Robin2019-09-26T00:00:00Z
  • Elaine’s place is so cozy. Bonus is the electric warming bed, but the absolute gem of everything is the view you wake up to in the morning! It’s been one of the best views we’ve had from any of our rooms this trip, and we’ve been around the whole country.

    Gillian2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • An ideal location to visit every part of the island. It had the most breathtaking views which we woke up to each morning. Beautifully clean and well equipped we could not of wished for anything better. Elaine and Nigel are perfect hosts and always prompt on responding to any questions we had.

    Michelle2019-09-19T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely little place in the countryside, with a fantastic view. Pretty much in the middle of nowhere, yet conveniently located in between all the places you might want to visit in the Orkney mainland. Quiet, peaceful and private

    Carsten2019-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • Langwell Bothy was my best stay so far on my travels through Scotland. Nigel and Elaine were the most spectacular hosts I’ve encountered yet. The space is perfection with every touch you could need to feel at home.

    Sarah2019-09-11T00:00:00Z
  • The Longwell Bothy is absolutely fantastic and very charming. The view is stunning and the accommodation is well located for exploring the island. We definitely would come back!

John was a very friendly host (even giving us a lift home when we bumped into him!) and gave us lots of fantastic local tips, some of which saved us money in the attractions. Good location for exploring the main sights of mainland. We would definitely recommend!

Brockan is a spacious recently refurbished 3 bedroom house with fresh colours and has a high standard of fixtures .The house has a large living room with large widows and Panoramic views of Marwick and Marwick bay. You can take your dog here to stay.Sometimes the cows in the field will come and say hello to you ( don’t worry as there are fences). You can enjoy an evening on the patio with a BBQ while watching the spectacular sunsets. In winter you may get a show of the Northern Lights.
The Kitchen has a gas hob for cooking on and a electric oven .
There is a house accross the road which also is holiday accommodation. The rest of the house is surrounded by fields and farmland close to the sea.
  • We loved our stay at Brockan. The house is warm and comfortable, with wonderful views over the bay. The sea and the weather change all the time, so it's very relaxing sitting and watching the views. We also really liked the fact that there are excellent walks straight from the house, we went along the cliffs, to the Brough of Birsay. But if you're fit and the weather is good, you can probably easily walk to Skaill. The house is very well equipped, with utility room and airing cupboard (great for winter walking), plus very good kitchen too. Joan was amazingly helpful and friendly. We would love to go back.

    Jane2020-02-18T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed for three nights here and can't wait to come back. The cottage has everything you need and more. It is warm, cozy with comfy beds. There is a beautiful bay near 5 mins from the house and great walks.

    Jane2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • Staying at Joan's house, Brockan, was one of our best AirBnB experiences. Joan has been very thoughtful in equipping and deorating the house and we wanted for nothing. The ornaments did not swallow up all the useful surfaces like in some places but genuinely enhanced the living areas. She even got in a full size living Christmas tree and decorated it just for us. We were touched. She also responds right away to queries. The wind was blowing at 40mph often during our stay and the house was always warm and quiet with no draughts. There is a fantastic utility room inside the back door for hanging wet gear, changing shoes and sanitising a mucky dog. The sitting room has two full size couches for lounging on and views of the sea from one window and the surrounding hills from the other. The kitchen had absolutely everything we needed. The location of Marwick is close to the Marwick cliffs, which are stuffed with nesting fulmars and guillemots in summer, Marwick beach, the brough of Birsay, Skaill Bay and Skara Brae. The house feels very rural yet Isbister's General Store is two or three miles away and the Dounby Coop is only a few more, Stromness is about 20 minutes by car and Kirkwall is about 30. And give Orkney a try in the winter months! You practically have the area to yourself and there is a lot of natural drama to be seen on windswept beaches and clifftop walks with a cosy home to return to at the end of the day.

    Audrey2020-01-03T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely cottage in the north-west if the mainland. Perfectly located for the sights in the West and North. At the right time of year, I'd think puffins could be seen within a 15 minute walk from the cottage! You can even see the old man of Hoy from the coast nearby. The cottage is lovely and warm. Thanks, Stu

  • Peacefull house in a beautifull place.

    Vincent2019-10-17T00:00:00Z
  • Joan is a perfect host! The cottage is really nice with a brilliant view! Thanks for everything!

    Julia2019-09-25T00:00:00Z
  • We loved the view!

    Lynn2019-09-16T00:00:00Z
  • One of the best Airbnb experiences or travel experiences I have ever had!! Such a beautiful spot and home. The sun room views of the farms and bay below are with me forever. The view every morning of the bay from bed is amazing. And Joan has provided everything you could possibly need. Even a lemon squeezer - a first for me after many many vacation stays over the years. Orkney is so wonderful and the hikes right outside your door are incredible. Be sure to hike down to the bay and then up over the hillside cliffs to the Memorial Tower above. The views of the cliffs and sea birds are stunning and you can see all the way to the Birsay lighthouse. And all of the Neolithic and other sights you want to see are a short drive away. I could live in this wonderful house and be happy and comfortable forever. Thanks Joan!

  • We stayed at Weaverhall Cottage in March 2020 and had a fantastic time in this accommodation. Neil pre arranged to meet us in Stromness to guide us to the cottage as it was a bit tricky to find on google maps. The cottage was clean, in a great location if you have a car, and had stunning views over the island of Hoy.

Excellent hosts and we would definitely stay again (Probably in summer though! 😂)

  • We had a lovely stay at Neil's house. It was really cosy and homely in the evenings with stunning views during the day. A short walk to Stromness (though I'd bring a torch for the evenings if you are walking back) and a thoroughly pleasant place to unwind after your day. Would stay again.

Located on a working croft, Norvald is the ideal location for a peaceful holiday. The house is situated on a hillside with spectacular views of the sea and surrounding countryside. The house has 3 bedrooms, a living room with 3 comfy sofas, a dining area with beautiful views and a well equipped kitchen. The bedrooms and main bathroom are downstairs, with the main living areas and a WC upstairs, making the most of the fantastic views.
We provide a welcome pack containing milk, bread, butter, cheese, oatcakes, biscuits, tea, coffee, sugar and a selection of jam/marmalade. We can provide a travel cot, stair gates, high chair and baby bath free of charge if required. Two of the bedrooms have the option of 1x Superking bed or 2x Single beds, please specify preference when booking. There is a coin meter for electricity, it accepts £1 coins only. In summer months, average useage is £15/week. I have a supply of coins if you need change.
We are about a 15 minute walk from a beautiful beach and 20 minute walk from the Palace village, where you can buy local produce at the shop or visit the highly recommended Birsay Bay tearoom for some delicious home baking. Just 5 minutes walk from the house you will find an excellent playpark and a little further along the road you can visit the Barony mill, Orkney's only working water mill.. Historical sites such as Skara Brae, Maeshowe, Ring of Brodgar and Ness of Brodgar are all within a 15 minute drive.
  • We had a wonderful time staying in Vanessas cottage. The house is nicely decorated and the kitchen well equipped. The view from the living room is amazing. It is the perfect place to discover Orkney when you want to escape from all the hustle and bustle. The one thing that you have to remember are the coins for electricity. We stayed there in December and needed around £10 per day. But Vanessa is very kind and can help out with coins in case you don’t have enough.

  • Norvald Farm is a very tastefully decorated house with fantastic views of the lake, the island of Brough of Birsay and the surrounding countryside. The beds are modern and very comfortable, there is ample storage space for the clothing. In the spacious kitchen is abundant what you need for cooking. Three comfortable sofas in the living room invite you to relax at the end of the day or in rainy weather. The bathroom is modern, everything is very well maintained and clean. The hostess Vanessa is very helpful, uncomplicated and extremely friendly. In short: a house to feel good.

  • Amazing views!! We loved our stay in Birsay and staying on a farm. Cows on one side and sheep to the other with a tractor passing from time to time, our 3 year old had a ball. The house has the bedrooms on the ground level and open plan living/dining upstairs maximising the view with lots of double glazed windows (kept out the bit of wind and rain we had). The Brough of Birsay is within walking distance and in the evening you can enjoy the light from its lighthouse. The 2 king sized and a double bed were all really comfortable and the kitchen was really well equipped. Highly recommend to anyone coming to Orkney mainland and needing a good base to visit it’s many sites of interest all within 30mins.

  • Vanessa’s place has the most amazing view in all of Orkney, so far as I can tell after 3 trips to the islands. The sunset over the Broch is unmatched. And rainy afternoons watching the cattle and sheep play were just as wonderful. The house is spotless. I cooked every meal for one week there and lacked for nothing. (A large family might need a bigger cooking array but it was fine for me and my few dinner guests.) Excellent storage; easy to do laundry; WiFi worked very well for working remotely to rthe US when needed (with a gorgeous view in the background). Orientation was great and it was really lovely to connect with another friendly Orcadian. This was my third visit to Orkney and I would definitely stay here again any time. Did I mention the view?

    Lela2019-06-11T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed at Vanessa’s for 6 nights and really enjoyed our stay. The home was recently remodeled and the spaces were very comfortable and spacious. The rural location was very tranquil with amazing views of the Brough of Birsay and the water. Also very close by were Skara Brae, Ring of Brodgar, Stones of Stenness, Maes Howe. Highly recommend!

40 Alfred Street, Stromness is a charming 1800's, 4 star cottage set right on the sea with its own private pier and parking. It has a magnificent view over the sea, with stunning views of sunrises and passing vessels. We also have 4 other Cottages on the sea on the Stromness Harbour, a one bedroom, three-bedroom and two, four-bedroom Cottages. Each Cottage is equipped with absolutely everything including a Cook's Larder (lots of coffees/teas/hot chocolate, condiments etc). Wi-Fi, Library.
This architect re-modelled stone, 1800's, fisherman's cottage - has loads of character and is positioned a few meters from the sea. It has it's own private pier with tables and benches to enjoy and it also has access to the little stony beach at low time via it's own private steps. Parking is right outside the front door. It is equipped with everything possible to a very high 4 star standard. Including a really cosy fireplace if you wish to get seriously snugly!
  • Splendid cottage in a delightful town on a fascinating island. Christmas spent here visiting family who live in Orkney. Was concerned that the cottage in its "in the sea" location might be a bit cold and damp - very quickly we had it cosy and very comfortable. Wonderful sunrises and sunsets with a mix of both millpond and rough seas to enjoy. Even in darkest and cold December there is much to do and see in Orkney and the cottage was absolutely the appropriate location from which to enjoy the island.

  • Rosemary's cottage is in a superb location and Stromness is such an interesting and unique wee town. The cottage is full of interesting bits and pieces and is very comfortable - especially after a day exploring brochs and getting muddy! A home from home.

  • 40 Alfred Street is a spacious yet cosy cottage with its own pier and little beach, making it the ideal place to experience the history and charm of Stromness. The house is exceptionally clean, well stocked and very comfortable. It's ideal for spending quality family time and offers so much more than just a base for exploring the Orkney islands.

    Lindsey2019-04-13T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing place to stay - much bigger inside than expected, and the outside has great views. Really felt the history of the cottage and the town while visiting.

    Iain2019-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • The standard of this gorgeous house was well above the standard for a holiday rental property, I would not hesitate for a second to recommend it to others.

    Eilidh2018-12-03T00:00:00Z
  • Rosemary's place was absolutely beautiful! It was situated right in town and allowed for easy access to a lot in Stromness. She was also so accessible over email, and always responded very quickly to all of our questions. I would highly recommend staying with Rosemary!

    Bailey2018-03-10T00:00:00Z
  • The Orkneys, Stromness and our little cottage - a combination made in heaven! Before I talk about Rosemary and The Cottage... the Orkney experience is amazing. After driving around the Islands... Stromness is definitely the place to stay - it is just gorgeous. We loved it! Rosemary is quick to respond and most helpful. We travel a lot and use Airbnb regularly and we both agree that Rosemary's attention to detail and all the little extras she has thought of and generously provided definitely adds to the experience. We loved the cottage and felt right at home, cosy and comfortable. Thank you Rosemary... we hope to return.

  • I stay in hotels at least half the year for my work, so when we take a break I much prefer to stay at home to relax. Fortunately for me there's places like 40 Alfred St., which, despite the cliché, really is a home from home. Despite the mighty storm lashing at the windows it was very cosy inside, the multi-fuel burner warms the house in a jiffy. There was everything you could possibly need in the kitchen, which was very well appointed with high quality white goods. The bedrooms were decorated to a high standard, and very comfortable, although the entrance to the en-suite upstairs requires you to duck a fair bit - charming in its own way! The views out the windows were like ever-changing oil paintings of the sea, and if the weather is good enough there's a lovely little picnic table to eat al-fresco on your own private pier. Communication with the host, Rosemary, was always prompt and friendly, although I haven't told her yet that we inadvertently stole her coffee filter papers (sorry). Couldn't recommend this place highly enough, and we'll definitely be back...

Cosy attic double bedroom with a table & two chairs. It has it's own en suite shower room. The house is on the waters edge in the heart of Stromness with it's wonderful old cobbled streets & lanes. It's a short walk from the ferry terminal. With a selection of small shop's closed by, a little further is a co op (it has extensive opening hours). You'll also find hotel restaurant's & cafe's close by. There's no direct vehicle access, though there is parking close by.
With it being an attic room on the second floor it may not be for people over 6ft 2 or have difficulties with stairs (though the steps are not steep). The bed is a standard double. You'll also find a small fridge, toaster & kettle, with a selection of tea's & coffee, (you'll need to bring your own milk). The pictures tell the story, the house is right on the waters edge, it has a wide sea wall, perfect for sitting on, watching the boats & wildlife come & go. It's only a few minutes walk from shops, ferry terminal/bus stop & museum. You'll also find wonderful displays in the Pier art centre. The room is nice & cosy, but you have space to move around. There's a built in cupboard which is big enough to store luggage away. You also have your own heater, so can control the temperature in the room.
Stromness is a very peaceful place to be, & the house is very secluded even though it's in the town. Orkney has very little crime, so it's a very safe place to be. We also have a public swimming pool, it's situated at the north end of town & of course a 18 hole golf course at the south end (overlooking the Island of Hoy).
  • Susan's accommodation is cosy, clean and comfortable and Susan is a great host. Her home is very central and the views over the harbour are lovely. We had our own bathroom and we also had a toaster and microwave in our room and we really appreciated being able to prepare snacks. Stromness and the Orkneys are great to visit - the scenery is wonderful and there is so much history to learn about. We recommend staying with Susan.

    Jean2020-02-01T00:00:00Z
  • Susan's place is lovely and a great location! Really enjoyed staying in her place which was on the top floor. Susan herself is lovely and happy to provide lots of information regarding where to go and the best things to see! Highly recommend staying here. The only downside was that we didn't have access to kitchen but she provided a microwave, kettle and tea/coffee.

    Alison2020-01-19T00:00:00Z
  • Friendly and helpful host, cosy clean room with a great view of the harbour!

  • Super accommodation right down at the waters edge in Stromness. What a find. The room is spacious, well equiped, super clean .... The location is ideal for getting around Stromness. Susan was a very welcoming host. Would highly recommend this place.

  • The place is clean and cosy, it has a wonderful wonderful view and you can reach anything in Stromness in few minutes. A few houses ahead I could hire a bicycle, a few houses downwards there is a little grocery store. Susan is very reliable and likes to communicate, I really liked chatting with her in between. I was sad that I could not stay longer, it is a beautiful place! Absolutely recommendable!

  • The Chalet is a totally adorable, comfy and beautifully clean space in an amazing location close to town. Angela was really helpful and accommodating - we arrived quite late on the ferry and she had the house warmed up and lights on, ready for us. The bread, butter and milk were lovely touches too. We just wish we had more time there!

    Emilie2019-09-06T00:00:00Z
  • Richard and I stayed at The Chalet for three weeks. It is a cosy, comfortable home that has been beautifully created by Angela. The view across to Hoy is magnificent and there are many lovely walks within easy access. Stromness is the nearest town with a range of individual shops, a great museum and of course the Pier Gallery. There is so much to see and do in Mainland Orkney and The Chalet is a great place to come back to at the end of the day. Angela is the perfect host. It was a sad day when we left! Thank you for everything Angela!

    Vicky2019-08-29T00:00:00Z
  • My partner and I stayed for 8 nights in the Chalet. What a wonderful place to stay! As other reviewers have already said, the location close to Warebeth Beach is stunning, with an incredible view and plenty of bird life close by (we even had a hen harrier roaming around outside). Angela has done a great job preparing the space for guests - it was clean and bright and we appreciated the thoughtful personal touches including a vase of flowers. Self check-in and check-out were simple and Angela was helpful responding to our queries. We thank Angela for hosting us and would thoroughly recommend the Chalet to all travellers.

Comfortable holiday home in spectacular location with breathtaking views. Peaceful rural setting within walking distance of picturesque town.
The caravan is a little old fashioned but is well equipped with everything you should need during your stay. The accommodation comprises an open plan kitchen/dining/living area which is light and airy with plenty of storage space, double bedroom, small single bedroom, shower room and a separate toilet room. The water, electricity and plumbing are mains connected (no nasty chemical toilet!). There is a TV, Bluetooth speaker/radio, gas hob and cooker as well as a fridge, microwave, kettle and toaster. Range of cookware and crockery. The caravan is in our garden, a portion of which you are welcome to use. We are also happy to store bikes/camping/fishing/shooting equipment in our garage if required, just ask.
The caravan is ideally located to enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside yet it is only a 10-15 minute walk from the town centre - of course even less by car or bicycle. The views are simply outstanding, overlooking the town, towards Orphir, over the island of Graemsay towards Hoy, right down Scapa Flow and out over the Pentland Firth towards mainland Scotland. Watch the fleet of dive boats head out Scapa Flow each morning and the Northlink passenger ferry “Hamnavoe” pass by the window throughout the day. We are surrounded by farmland with cows, sheep and crops - the cows can be quite inquisitive so don’t be alarmed to open the curtains in the morning to have one peeping in! And just a stones throw from Warbeth Beach with fantastic walks right on the door step. More than often, you’ll have the beach all to yourself. Stromness is a vibrant town with a population of around 2000. It is famous for its windy cobbled streets and waterfront houses, many of which have been there for over 300 years. There are 3 hotels and 3 pubs. The restaurants serve the best of Orkney’s fresh produce - the seafood will probably have been landed by one of the local fishermen that same day! The beef and cheese are world famous, not to mention Highland Park whisky and our ever growing range of local gins. There is a butcher, baker, deli and a couple of “peedie” cafes. It is well connected by a regular public bus service and a foot passenger ferry which runs daily to the islands of Graemsay and Hoy.
  • For peacefulness, tranquility and incredible views you'll find this place hard to beat. I absolutely loved my stay here and already planning to come back. The caravan itself is ever so slightly dated so dont expect a brand new one, but its spacious, ram packed with all the home comfort things and utensils you could ever need and the bed and the sofas are super comfy so what more could you ask for? I've already mentioned the views, but honestly, wow, they're something special! I could sit and look out the bay windows all day. 100% recommend.

    Edward2019-09-19T00:00:00Z
  • We loved staying in Lois' caravan which has breathtaking views over the sea and Hoy beyond, words aren't enough, incredible. Loved watching the ferry going back and forth, the calves in the field below having a tussle with the ram, the weather changing, the light house and scapa flow beyond. We had a magical week on Orkney, so much to do, history, beautiful beaches, delicious local produce and very friendly. Lois was very discreet but immediately there to help if needed. Thank you so much.

    Savitri2019-08-24T00:00:00Z
  • The Braehead caravan is a great place to stay! The accomodation was very clean and everything we needed was there. Beautiful views from the living room windows. Highly recommended.

  • Such a lovely place and what a view! Super well equipped caravan, we are a family of four and had a great time. You have everything you need for a comfortable stay. A tip: ask Lois for directions to the caravan as the postal code and the google maps took us close but not quite there. Many thanks Lois.

  • A comfortable caravan at a splendid place with a fabulous view and good accessibility to the centre of Stromness (whilst Stromness is generally a good base for exploring particularly the sites at Orkney Mainland). Great amenities including a gas heater/fireplace which allows to warm up the place nicely. Lois' was an amazing, swiftly and helpfully communicating host. Overall, an outstanding ABnB experience worthy of recommendation.

  • We had a lovely stay at the Hamnavoe Apartment at the harbour in Stromness! The place was very, very clean, had all amenieties in kitchen necessary and was located the most beautiful place overlooking the harbour with a 2 min walk to a large Co-op. It was a nice touch with the private parking spot, a washer/dryer and the possibility of using Netflix on the TV. The apartment was very cozy decorated, the shower great and the bed comfy. This cottage is in walking distance of all local amenities but situated in a quiet part of the town with private parking.
This cottage features a multi fuel stove adding to the character and although there is no TV there is WIFI available. There are some cleverly designed yet steep stairs leading to the bedroom, shower room and landing. There is a small bunk in the bedroom which could potentially sleep 1 child of 5 years and above.

  • We wouldn’t hesitate to stay in this lovely cottage again, it really made our trip to Stromness all the more special. So much care and attention has gone into making every room unique and comfortable we would find ourselves looking forward to returning at the end of the day and sitting up next to the fire! Great host, great communication and all the information we could need to get started! What are you waiting for?

    Stuart2019-12-30T00:00:00Z
  • It's a unique place with lots of personally collected items and the overall craftsmanship of the cottage makes you feel like you have been allowed to stay in someone's very special home.

  • Great wee cottage with fun fisherman theme. Easy to check in and out. The cottage is close to the town centre and nice and quiet. The bed was comfortable and the cottage very clean. The Hosts were really responsive when we had a question on the first day. All went very well and I would recommend staying here if you are planning a trip to Stromness.

  • Lovely quirky cottage ideally located in the centre of Stromness. Ideal for two.

    Anthony2019-09-13T00:00:00Z
  • Staying here is experience in its own right. The attention to detail in the design is extraordinary, it's like stepping into a museum/film-set whilst being an incredibly well equipped and practical space. The location is great, just a few minutes walk from the centre of town, very quiet at night but close enough for your fish and chips to still be warm by the time you get back! Stromness itself is a charming place, good amenities for its size and a great setting off point for anything you might want to see on the islands. If you get the chance to book into Fisherman's Cottage I would take it. It's a pretty unique place and staying there was one of the (many) highlights of our trip.

Detached property, ample off street parking. Huge double bedroom with TV, wifi, relaxed seating along with breakfast table, mini fridge, snacks and tea/ coffee facilities. The en suite is fitted with a large shower as well as a separate bath.
We are located a few seconds walk from the beach at Marwick bay and a few minutes walk from Kitchener Memorial and the sea bird colonies of Marwick Head. If you like history then a few miles north are the remains of the 11th century Orkney Viking capital on the Brough of Birsay and a few miles south is the world famous Neolithic settlement of Scara Brae in the picturesque bay of Skaill.
  • Wonderful stay! Only one regret: not having been able to stay there more than one night. The house is superb and the bedroom is actually more of a large studio with a small kitchen area (microwave and fridge). The view of the bay from the bed is just perfect! In addition, Angela and Simon are adorable and ready to share good addresses or places to see. They take great care while leaving great independence. One of the best Airbnb experiences we have had. If we return to Orkney, this is where we will stay without hesitation.

  • Delightful. Stillness. Comfy. Absolute nice 🤗☀️

    Agate2019-11-22T00:00:00Z
  • This was by far the best Airbnb my husband and I had ever stayed in. Angela's place was so stylish and comfortable, with amazing views — we could even see the Old Man of Hoy from our room! Simon and Angela were also very responsive and we were able to reach their place ok. Thanks again for the amazing stay! We'd love to go back.

    McKenzie2019-11-14T00:00:00Z
  • Had a very lovely stay at Simon and Angela’s house. The place is beautiful and in a stunning part of Orkney with amazing views. Lots to do near by and simon was very knowledgeable and friendly to give us tips. Wish we could have stayed longer!! Thank you

    Hamish2019-10-26T00:00:00Z
  • We had an amazing stay and wish we could give more stars than 5. The room was spotless and had everything we could need. Simon went out of his way to drive us to Stromness in the morning (we were traveling via bike and it was a rainy, windy morning!) and show us some interesting historical sites and history. Thank you so much!!

    Nora2019-10-22T00:00:00Z
  • We were Angela and Simon’s first guests and we were completely blown away by our experience in their home. There are views of the ocean and Old Man of Hoy and Kitchener’s memorial through beautiful skylights and Shetland ponies just outside. The space is truly gorgeous-giant windows and comfy bed, an excellent shower and bath tub (best hot shower and bath we’ve had in awhile!), also a kettle, toaster and small fridge which we greatly appreciated for storing our road trip groceries. Above all, Angela and Simon were hugely welcoming and made us feel right at home, but left us total privacy to enjoy the quiet night in that we needed. But you could also walk right down to the ocean/do lots of exploring from their place! In short, we couldn’t recommend staying with them more. If you’re looking for a gorgeous, peaceful place from which to explore the Orkneys with accommodating hosts who have all the local knowledge you could hope for, look no further. Thank you again, Angela and Simon-wishing you the very best!

  • Tucked in the friendly little village of Birsay this is a compact but comfortable base for exploring the delights of Orkney. The house is very well equipped and neat as a new pin.

  • This is the most excellent little cottage imaginable! A perfect location right on the coast in the charming little village of Birsay. I'm desperate to go back and experience the sea air and the solitude again!

  • Fantastic, cosy and warm cottage in a great location! Couldn't have asked for more. Close to shop, and lovely Tea room. We really enjoyed our stay even though we caught the tail end of the big storm. Thank you so much, Rachel & Tim

  • This cottage is outstanding in all respects. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend Patsy's place to anyone looking for a lovely place to stay in Orkney. The location is excellent, just off the beach, and actually Birsay was our favourite part of Orkney. There were seals sunning themselves on the beach just 5 minutes walk from our cottage! There is a little shop around the corner and it's also a short walk away from the nicest tearoom on the island. There are lots of walks right from your doorstep. The cottage itself is immaculate and well-appointed. Patsy has thought of everything you could need for your holiday. There was even milk in the fridge so we could make a cup of tea after a very long drive up on the first night. We watched the stars in the Milky way on the bench at the beach just up the path and one night even saw the Aurora Borealis. Couldn't recommend this place more - would come again and stay in Patsy's cottage again!

On the outskirts of the historic town of Stromness in the West Mainland of Orkney, this single-story barn conversion has one bedroom, an open-plan living/dining/kitchen space, and a bathroom with bath and walk-in shower. All on one level, the property is wheelchair accessible throughout. It has stunning views across Hoy Sound and out to the open Atlantic. Parking is available right outside, but if you visit without a car, regular buses from Stromness go to all areas of Orkney.
The building was converted four years ago from an old barn. It has a traditional, Orkney stone exterior, and an up-to-date and comfortable interior. Large windows on the seaward side flood the building with light, and give an unrestricted view across Hoy Sound. The kitchen and bathroom are stylish and modern. Slate floors throughout have underfloor heating, and there is a multi-fuel stove in the sitting room. There is a good stock of Orkney books and maps, as well as general reading material, board games, jigsaws and playing cards.
Innertown is in the parish of Stromness, within easy walking distance of the town centre, but we are surrounded by farmland, and close to the beach. Houses are widely spaced - we have a couple of fields between us and our nearest neighbours in each direction. There are footpaths along the shore, taking you to the golf course and the town of Stromness in one direction, or to the cliffs at Yesnaby and the neolithic village of Skara Brae in the other. Dominating the horizon are the heather-covered hills of Hoy: the highest hills in all of Orkney.
  • Jane's beautifully renovated house is amazing! The interior is very stylish yet functional and contains everything you need for a few days on the Orkneys. She even provided us with bread, coffee, tea and other breakfast essentials! The view from the house is breathtaking. Additionally, Jane answered very quickly and made sure that we were able to find the house immediately. She made us feel very much at home. Thank you so much for that wonderful stay! Definitely worth a visit!

    Eva2019-12-11T00:00:00Z
  • This is a wonderful relaxing soothing space to experience. The house and view and close proximity to the beach made my 3 days feel like a spa break. Highly recommend. I will be back soon.

    Isobel2019-12-02T00:00:00Z
  • If your looking for somewhere away from the hustle & bustle of every day life, this place is perfect. The view out the window are better than anything you'd see on a TV. Definitely need more than a long weekend to see everything these spectacular islands have to offer. Can't wait to return. Think we've found a home from home.

    Mandy2019-11-25T00:00:00Z
  • The only drawback of Jane's house is that you have to leave. The house is a jewel that makes your stay on the island more comfortable and personal. Everything is perfectly maintained, the comfortable bed, the kitchen is dreamy and the views, these views are a separate issue. Discovering the Orkney Islands is a wonderful experience, but if you stay in this house it will make it more unique and special

    Marta2019-11-19T00:00:00Z
  • Probably the best place to stay on Orkney. Toft is the perfect balance between peace haven and proximity to Stromness. We will undoubtedly be back on Orkney, and Toft is the first place we will be looking to book!

    Vincent2019-11-14T00:00:00Z
  • If your looking for beautiful views and amazing comfort , this is your place for an Orkney stay.

    Alan2019-11-02T00:00:00Z

  • This is an oasis of calm and peace. Magnificent views over to Hoy, and all the creature comforts you would ever need. Fab comfy bed, excellent shower and a bath for a soak. The kitchen is thoughtfully kitted out with the best pans we’ve ever had making my scrambled eggs even better!! We’ve had a really lovely time staying here and plan to return. Thank you so much.

This is a cosy cottage with a double and a twin room, a comfortable living room, kitchen and bathroom. It also has a sunroom area with patio doors to the garden, the perfect location to watch the sunset. Set in stunning countryside, but only a short walk from the village of Dounby with a hotel and an excellent restaurant, a small supermarket, Post Office and two craft shops. Or a stroll down beside the Loch to the Merkister Hotel for a drink or a meal at their excellent restaurant.
It is perfectly situated for touring Orkney and is within 6 miles of the major archaeological sites including the standing stones and Skara Brae. A great location for walking, bird watching or just relaxing.
  • Lovely cosy cottage, well equipped kitchen and friendly, helpful hosts. It was wet and windy when we arrived and I was a bit concerned about how warm we would be in the cottage, especially as we had our two year toddler with us. It turned out to be very easy to keep the stove lighting and the place held the heat really well... Carolyn was very helpful, even providing us with a box of lovely toys for our son. Location quite central for exploring the west mainland. Very happy with the stay, highly recommend

  • Enjoyed a wonderful week staying in Dene Cottage. The cottage is very well situated amongst farmland teeming with wildlife and centrally placed for easy access to key sites in Orkney. The house is itself is very cosy and tastefully furnished and well provided. Carolyn was at hand to answer our questions and provided tips for places to visit. Would highly recommend the house to other AirBnB’rs looking for a quite house with lovely views across rural meadows and farmland.

We are in a lovely quiet safe neighbourhood.
  • This AirBnB is extremely comfortable and is well located near the harbour in Stromness. Lynn made us very welcome, even meeting us from the ferry in the pouring rain. From there we were easily able to explore Orkney using a hired car , from a local garage.

  • Nia-Roo is a great stay on a remarkable island. Lynn and her capable assistants provide a welcoming and attractive stay. The room has 2 comfortable leather lounges and the bed is very good. The windows are double glazed and the entrance has the traditional double doors. The bathroom was modern and very clean. The location is good for travel to Skara Brae UNESCO locations because it’s 20 minutes drive closer than Kirkwall. It’s a pleasant 10 minute walk along the harbour to Stromness town centre. Both pubs I tried (the Stromness Hotel and the Ferry Inn) offered very good food and service. There are also good shops and cafes in Stromness. I found great coffee each day at the Bayleaf Delicatessen. To top it off the Stromness Museum is an absolute gem.

  • Lynn provided an excellent space for a weary cyclist to relax after a day riding into a gale force headwind. The room was homely, and ideal to relax in. Lynn made sure I was settled in and provided ample tea. The house is situate about 5 minutes cycle from the ferry terminal, so is ideal for people arriving or leaving the island.

The appartement is the perfect place to be: very clean, big, well-equiped with very modern furniture and a lot of nice details (my boyfriend was happy about the PS and some old games :-) ). Since the next supermarket and also the must-see spots are around 20 minutes away, a rental car is recommended. Parking lots are right in front of the house.

  • We can highly recommend the Cart House at Howe. John has created the perfect space for singles or two-somes looking for a getaway. The twin beds were very comfortable, and the space is decorated with an eclectic sense of witty style. The kitchen is functional (although we really only ate breakfast there) and the shower room has plentiful hot water. The Cart House is warm even when the wind is blowing off the bay, and the view is spectacular. John is friendly and helpful, and every suggestion he made for us was a winner. Thanks for a great visit John!

  • A great central location to visit most of the interesting sites Mainland Orkney has to offer. The Carthouse is a cosy place and contains all the neccesary equipment to have a great stay. After spending 5 nights on a campsite we particularily enjoyed the warm showers! Great place, especially if you love chickens!

    Jeske2019-08-29T00:00:00Z
  • The spot is a gem with a great view, a stylish space, and helpful hosts. We loved the artwork in the space as well as the chickens and cows that came to visit. We would stay again!

    Jacqueline2019-08-02T00:00:00Z
  • We had a a fantastic time staying in Cart House enjoying all the detail John had put into in making it such a wonderful place. The views are fabulous, the kitchens is well equipped and we could even use the washing machine. John gave us lots of advice on what to see and do in the area and we were so happy that he pointed out rock pools where we went for a swim on a sunny day and to the exact spot where to see Puffins. We hope to come back and stay here again!

    Ron2019-07-23T00:00:00Z
  • Had a great stay at John's place. Was cosy, clean and quirky. John also offered some great tips on places to visit and was very helpful!

    Graeme2019-06-26T00:00:00Z
  • Best holiday I have ever had - John & Victoria were amazing hosts, attentive but unobtrusive and they went out of their way to ensure I had a great stay, explaining how everything worked & giving me tips on the local area & things to see. I was visiting Orkney for a bit of peace & quiet plus the amazing scenery & wonderful wildlife.... and it didn't disappoint. John & Victoria's accommodation was a wonderful place to enjoy the island and relax in the evening... they had even left me fresh eggs, which were amazing. The Bothy is quirky, comfortable & has everything you need for a relaxing stay. Chickens & cats all added to the welcoming vibe.... I had a great time & really didn't want to leave.... it was a wonderful week on the island, which was largely due to where I was staying. I can't recommend John & Victoria's place highly enough to anybody wanting the appreciate the beauty of the area & the sea view was spectacular..... Thank you so much folks - you really made my stay amazing!

  • The Cart House is a perfect little bolthole in a lovely location with views across to the sea. It is beautifully appointed with lots of interesting vintage artefacts and paintings, everything works, there is plenty of hot water, it is warm and there is good parking. On arrival John left us some of delicious, new-laid eggs from his flock of friendly, free-range chickens. He is a very hospitable host with excellent local knowledge and guided us to locations where we could see local wildlife and archeology and get the best local food. Evie itself is idyllic, close to some important sights for birds and archeology and has a little local shop and a cafe. The landscapes are stunning. We had a perfect stay and were sorry to leave.

  • Lovely view across the loch and hills, very close to all the major sites.

  • Great place that is very well equipped and the small space is very cleverly utilised. Location and views very private with only a single house (owner) nearby. Would stay again.

  • A well designed and cosy pod which had everything we needed. Lovely views out over the loch in a quiet, secluded spot. Donna was very helpful and a great host. Definitely recommended.

  • Great place to stay!

  • This is an ideal place to stay if you fancy relaxing in the Orkney countryside for a few days. Two big features in its favour: the close proximity to sites on the West side of the mainland, and waking up to a fantastic view of the fields and loch. The Puffin Pod has only been running for a few months so everything is brand new, but has everything you could need. Donna is the best host you could wish for, you'll feel at ease straight away. One helpful hint to future guests - using Google Maps as satnav to find the place will only work if you put the name of the farm. I learned the hard way not to follow the postcode directions as ended up at a different farm running away from some rather snappy dogs. Thanks Donna, for being so welcoming and considerate! Would love to stay here again someday.

  • Donna's Pod (mini house) was very cute, well decorated and really handy for such a small space. We felt very good. Donna is a very caring and friendly host. Orkney is an exciting island for its history and all the discoveries to be made! I recommend Bisway's ballad in Marwick. The price / quality ratio of the Pod is excellent! Thank you Donna.

  • Great wee space, so clean and well thought-out, with lovely views and great hosts. Pretty good location-wise to check out the west side of the mainland.

  • 100% fantastic place!! Absolute recommend.

  • The kitchen door looks out toward the Stones of Stenness in the distance. Perfect location for Neolithic monuments. Also has a washer for muddy trousers from crawling into tombs or falling in peat bogs. Perfect!

  • The Leverets was a such a lovely place to stay, the room was perfect and the amenities were everything we needed. The location was also great as it was right near the main Neolithic sites, including Maes Howe and the Ring of Brodgar.

  • It was cold and wet outside (Nov.) and after a soaking walk uphill from the bus stop I found the the rooms were snug and warm! Very welcoming, and a good choice. Within walking distance of Maeshowe, Ring of Brodgar etc., AND a bus stop, so a great location if on foot. I enjoyed myself, despite weather, and great views once the weather improved. Thanks Helen.

  • My partner and I really enjoyed our stay here— I never actually met Helen face-to-face, but her instructions from the ferry were very clear. She generously welcomed us with milk, bread, and Orkney fudge! We booked two nights here, and cozied up in the living room and watched a bunch of American movies on DVD. There is no wifi, but we enjoyed it all the same— it gave us an opportunity to really relax and slow our pace. There was also a washing machine, which proved very useful to us + some drying racks. We would definitely rent this place again!

  • Helen was a great host. By my arrival, i found milk, butter, bread and specialties of the island in the Kistchen- so nice! The apartment has everything you need and is very cosy. The view of the water is great!

  • A lovely place to stay. Great location for arriving off the ferry from Stromness. Accurate description for how to find the place. Very cosy, and useful to have kitchen facilities and also a living area to relax in. Great views as well. Was provided a loaf of bread which was a nice extra touch.

Number 42 is situated in the heart of Stromness within an iconic grade B listed stone building, known locally as "The Speedings." Its location in a quiet part of the street makes it very accessible - literally 1-2 minutes walk from the ferry terminal, bus station, pubs and shops. Ideal for guests who are travelling without cars but also perfect if you are driving, with short- term on-street parking right outside the front door and free long term parking at the back.
Laid out over 3 floors this is an unusual space but all areas are roomy, light and airy. The bathroom is situated right alongside the bedroom on the top floor with a living room in the middle (street level, John Street) and the kitchen/dining room on the lower level which also benefits from a (back) door. The house is well equipped, comfortable and cosy and has lovely street and harbour views. We think you'll be charmed by all it has to offer.
Stromness is Orkney’s second town. Its character has changed little in the last few hundred years being sandwiched between the sea and Brinkies Brae – the granite hill under which the town nestles. There is one main street which winds through the middle of the town, widening and narrowing seemingly as it pleases and, amazingly, still operating a two-way traffic system. The street changes names as it meanders through the town: Alfred street, Dundas street, Graham Place, Victoria Street, John Street…. All intersected by narrow closes and alleys along the way. The Speedings was an important and historic building in the town, being the home of our Lord Lieutenant, James Robertson. When it was built, the sea lapped at its foundations and boats were hauled into the sheds below before some notable land reclamation and the building of “Ferry Road.” There are several shops in the town and you can purchase freshly baked bread, fishing tackle and diving accessories amongst many other things. There are four bars and golf club with several cafes and licensed restaurants. The harbour is a busy working one, with fishermen, divers, salmon boats and a strong marine renewables presence.
  • Inga's place is great. Excellent location, shops and pubs nearby, and a great place to base yourself if - like us - you plan on exploring the islands. A perfect host too - quick responses to any queries and even posted me back a set of keys I had left at the property! Would definitely stay again.

  • Thanks for a great stay! Perfectly situated for the boat terminal and a great base on Orkney. Spotlessly clean and cosy house.

  • We had a great time and loved staying in The Speedings. The house was spotless, cosy, comfortable, well equipped and close to local amenities. It was great.

  • Number 42 was a great stay. If you're coming in on the Stromness ferry, it can't be beat for location. We were concerned about noise, but it was quite peaceful and we had some nice views. The free long-term car pack just next door made coming and going easy, as we had a car to travel the island. If you don't have a car, you're in the heart of Stromness. Just down the street are several cafes, restaurants, and shops. Inga gave clear and perfect instructions for arrival and managing the stay. When you're first let in, the keys are in the room to your immediate right. Everything was spotless (and I'm picky). When we arrived, after loading the password, we couldn't connect to the wifi until we unplugged it and plugged it in again. Meanwhile, I sent Inga a note and she was swiftly responsive, but it was already working. Number 42 has three levels connected by a spiral stairway. I used the railing to serviceably hang spun wash to dry as the weather was too variable to use the lines outside. The bathroom is next to the bedroom at the top of the stairs. We thought the decor touches upstairs were lovely. The bedroom felt like a little sanctuary, and the bed was comfortable. The kitchen level all the way downstairs has a little sitting area that proved to be light and airy with comfortable sofas. The operable windows upstairs were nice for changing air flow with the very changeable weather. We appreciated Inga's instructions about the heater on the kitchen level (what to do and what not to do). There's a french press for coffee. Bring your own coarse-ground as the co-op groceries didn't have grinding. Number 42 worked out wonderfully for us. I don't know when we will be back to the amazing Orkneys but we would stay here again. Thanks for the excellent hosting, Inga!

  • Ann is a lovely host and will give you a warm welcome. The place is ideally located for travel all round the mainland of Orkney. It is only a couple of minutes drive out with Stromness which makes it nice and peaceful to come back too after a busy day of sightseeing.

  • A cosy, clean and comfy place and a good base from which to explore mainland Orkney. We had a great few days. Thanks Ann.

    Clare2019-09-18T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage is cosy, very comfortable, perfect for 2 people; and the location is great. Ann is a super host. We did a few bike trips (e-bikes!), Stromness and grocery shopping is close by, and many of the Neolithic sights as well. Absolutely recommendable!

    Kirsten2019-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • Ann’s Cottage is beautifully clean and well equipped, with an amazing view. We have had a great time, and were only 5 minutes in the car from Stromness and the ferry, or straight out into beautiful countryside. Stromness is a fantastic base, but it’s very easy to get around and we have covered much of the mainland in our 4 days. Feawell is a very comfortable and relaxing place to come back to after a days walking and sight seeing. Ann is a great host, who was helpful and generous with her garden produce!

Situated in the tranquil rural Orkney countryside on the shore of the Swannay Loch you will find a peacefull getaway. Your accommodation is an attic conversion with stunning views over the loch and surrounding countryside. Centrally situated between Kirkwall and Stromness both a half hour drive away. Whether you have an interest in fishing, hiking, bird watching, archaeology or sightseeing we offer an ideal base for your daily adventures. You will find many fine places to dine within easy reach
Our home is just a stones throw away from the edge of the Swannay Loch which is renowned for it's wild brown trout, if you are a keen fisher then it does not get much better than this, the area of the loch adjacent to the house is a hot spot and during the fishing season I regularly catch trout from the shore . There is a small rowing boat available to hire for £20 per day should you wish to fish further into the loch. For the birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts there is much to savor, hen harriers can be observed hunting over the surrounding fields and moorland. Brown hares are present in abundance and can be seen on the lawn at various times of day. Early in the morning and last thing at night pheasants pass the house in numbers.
The house is set back from the main road and accessed via a long driveway. The surrounding countryside is made up of loch, moorland and farmland. The views are breathtaking and tranquil, with stunning sunrises and sunsets that will forever be etched in your memory. For guest who enjoy the seaside there is an excellent sandy beach a 10 minute drive away. The quiet country roads are perfect for those who enjoy a leisurely stroll.
  • We had a great time staying at Richard's place - the room is very comfortable, with lovely views and a very nice ensuite bathroom. Lots of little touches made us feel very welcomed. Breakfast was great with lots of options, and Richard was extremely helpful whenever we needed advice. The house is in a good location for exploring the northern part of Orkney and is of course convenient to everywhere else if you have a car (perhaps not recommended to bike around as we did, unless you are very keen bikers!!).

  • What a peaceful, relaxing, tranquil place to wake up to every day. We fell in love with the place. The hosts were lovely, kind, helpful and welcoming. We had a lovely selection of cereal, bread and croissants for breakfast. The house was warm and clean. The bed was comfortable, and the shower was lovely and hot. We couldn't have asked for more.
