Places to stay in Achnamara
Dunans Cottage is situated in the beautiful Knapdale Forest 1.9 miles from Cairnbaan within a National Scenic Area. The views are fantastic! The Cottage is off the beaten track but within a traditional farming hamlet with access via a forestry track ( see illustrated map ). Many outdoor and indoor activities are available within the area but the peace and quiet at Dunans are unique.
The cottage is small and cosy (6m x 4m, not including porch and bathroom), open plan studio style with a log burning stove. We will provide a log basket of firewood, and more can be bought on request. There is also electric heating. A small separate bathroom contains W.C., wash basin and shower. The kitchen area is well equipped and fitted with cooker, sink, a small fridge with a freezer compartment, washing machine and micro wave.
We live in mid Argyll and within that area there are many places worth a visit depending on your interest. Crinan(6 miles), is at the west end of the famous Crinan canal and has an hotel and coffee shop. From here it is possible to take a boat trip to the Corryvrecken whirlpool between the Isles of Jura and Scarba where you often can watch sea eagles. Crinan ferry beach is great for walking at low tide. Kilmartin (8 miles) is surrounded by archaeological sites(standing stones, stone circles and cairns) and the award winning museum and café are well worth a visit. The road to Tayvallich (11 miles) takes you along the shore of Caol Scotnish and past the ruined crofting community of Arichonan. Tayvallich village overlooks a bay with many boats. There is a pub and a shop. Passing through Tayvallich you can visit Taynish nature reserve, a beautiful area of ancient old oak forest and then on to the end of the peninsular and look straight across the water at the Isle of Jura.
  • A really magical wee place. We spent three extremely relaxing days exploring the surroundings, and chilling out in the cosy cottage. The fire and candles were on for our arrival late on Friday night. The breakfast pack was a really nice touch and sorted us out for our first morning. There’s so much to do in the surrounding area, and despite the weather we managed to see most of it. Well hopefully be back sometime soon. Thanks for a lovely weekend!

  • If you want to get away from it all, then Dunans Cottage is the place for you. It is very peaceful and cosy. You can walk straight out of the door and onto endless forest tracks, brilliant if you have a dog ! Ali left a VERY generous breakfast that was much appreciated. I would definately recommend Ali's place if you want to escape the tv, computer and phone, and get back to simple living.

  • This cosy, peaceful haven was a wonderful place to stay. The hosts were friendly and welcoming, kindly providing bread, milk, eggs and bacon for the first breakfast. The rural sky allowed a spectacular view of stars & planets. I would definitely stay there again.

  • This little cottage is without a doubt an amazing find. It's in such a beautiful location and the hosts are so very kind and friendly. The cottage had everything we could possibly need and the breakfast pack was such a wonderful touch. We can't wait to come back in the warmer weather for some foraging walks. Thank you again for being such lovely hosts.

  • A tranquil wee place with loads of character, stunning scenery and loads of peace and quiet. Many nice walks and interesting places to visit that aren’t too far away, so long as you have a decent car! Cairnbaan hotel is a nice spot for a pint and you’re only a few miles from Lochgilphead for supplies!

  • Second visit to this wonderful place. We love it!

    Sarah2020-02-01T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing place. Amazing location. Great people. The fire place. The feeling you're in the middle of nowhere but in fact a few mile from a co-op. A great place to make lovely meals unwind and relax. Check out the Cairnbaan Hotel, the food and staff are exceptional. It's just a great place to stay! You would be insane not to visit.

We live in a lovely bungalow in a quiet area with superb views over the Crinan Canal and Loch Fyne. If you are planning to work locally short term or to visit to appreciate the beautiful West Coast of Scotland, this is a good central spot. The start of the Kintyre Way is 10 miles South and the historical archaeological site of Kilmartin is 10 miles North. We are also an ideal stop over to and from the Islay Ferry Terminal which is a 30 minute drive South.
The Crinan Canal, the most picturesque short cut to the Western Isles is just 70 short steps away. Cycle/walk 9 miles to its end at Crinan or better still 1/2 mile to the Ardrishaig sea lock basin. You can interact with us as much or as little as you wish, but regardless, we are always available for advice and information on the local area. We offer 1 Bedroom that is ensuite with one double bed. Please be aware that this is a 'small' double room approximately 12' x 11' (3.6m x 3.3m). There is access to all sides of the bed with additional fitted wardrobe space which houses the small fridge, kettle, tea tray and drawer unit with hanging rail. There is also an additional luggage rack in the room which can be placed outside if you so wish. There is room under the bed for storage. Feedback is that this is enough space to suit most needs. I hope this helps in your decision in choosing our accommodation but please feel free to contact for any further information.
We are in a very quiet neighbourhood so hope you find your stay relaxing and peaceful. There is a local pub/restaurant; convenience store and cafe within a short walk of the house. The Crinan Canal is accessed by steps directly to the house.
  • Clean, comfy and warm, especially on a freezing day.

  • Staying with Moira is definitely the BEST place to discover the area of Ardrishaig and its surroundings. Moira made our stay more than agreable . So thank you for making this trip the first of many as you have now made us want to come back again. Millie and Teodor

    Millie2020-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • I wasn’t able to get to Moira’s this time sadly, due to bad weather and transport problems. However she could not have been more sympathetic and gave a full refund. I would certainly stay with her next time I come to Ardrishaig.

Byre Cottage is a lovely conversion of the former cattle byre at Seafield Farm. A modest 1830 exterior hides a spacious interior with 21st Century facilities. We have a wonderful rural setting with walks, wildlife in abundance and beautiful scenery.
Seafield Farm has been in our family for over a hundred years and has been providing holidays for much of that time. The two cottages have been converted from the farm steading which is attached to our home, the farmhouse. We make our cottages as special as we can with lots of extras to make your holiday memorable. The cottage is completely self contained, fully equipped for self catering and sleeps two in one or two bedrooms. Visitors often comment on how well the kitchen is equipped. We welcome visitors for stays of 4 days or more during the main season. 3 day breaks are available during low season. Our cottages are child free (but we do accept infants - cot provided), pet free and stress free! Peace and quiet guaranteed.
We live in a beautiful, peaceful location far from the stresses of everyday life but only 15 minutes drive from the nearest town. Many of our visitors return year after year. We are surrounded by forests and woodland with miles of forest roads to explore. Unfortunately there are no pubs or shops within walking distance - the nearest ones are 6 - 9 miles away. Make sure you stock up before you arrive. We are ten miles from Kilmartin Glen which has an extraordinary number of archaeological monuments, cairns and rock art and a lovely museum, cafe and shop. The picturesque villages of Tayvallich and Crinan are nearby and both have places to eat.
  • We had a wonderful, relaxing break in this idyllic location. The cottage was lovely and we particularly enjoyed cooking and relaxing in the BBQ hut. Would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to get away from it all.

    Joanne2019-08-17T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage is warm, well-equipped and essentially a home away from home. We loved the area, is very relaxing and the sun topped off the week.

    David2019-08-03T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful cottage in an amazing location by a loch, perfect for a quiet stay and battery recharge. Great facilities and hospitality! You will find everything you need for a pleasant holiday. There are a couple of fantastic restaurants in the area, and stunning scenery.

    Berta2019-07-27T00:00:00Z
  • This is a lovely quiet location with excellent hosts. Within a few miles there are a couple of lovely places to eat. Location is also good for exploring

  • We would highly recommend Jane’s cottage. Bother the accommodation and the location are great. The cottage is warm and homely and the surrounding area has so much of interest. Jane is in hand if needed but otherwise will leave you to enjoy your holiday. We had a great time and saw a beaver in the loch near by.

    Rich2018-08-24T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful time at Byre cottage. The place is very comfortable and fully equipped, and Jane and James make you feel welcome. The cottage is ideally located for day excursions to the Taynish nature reserve, Tarbert, Gigha or Arran, or Kilmartin. The local villages are very cute and quiet (Tayvallish has a great coffee shop; Crinan has a great harbour and walk). We particularly enjoyed the Kilmory beach at the end of the road. We hope to be back soon!

    Emilie2018-08-12T00:00:00Z
  • Staying at the Byre Cottage was simply amazing and Jane was a splendid host! Lemon cake and farm fresh eggs greeted as well as a charming and comfortable accommodations. Loved the art all around us and on the walls. The location was perfectly situated for seeing history at Kilmartin Glen, nearby nature walks, and the passenger ferry to Jura. Jane has a great basket of guidebooks that we used and to which we added. There is also great food nearby in Tayvallich at the café and inn, and the oysters at the Crinin bar were delicious We also really appreciated Jane and Johns sustainability practices for the cottage and the farm. And four cloudless days, so uncharacteristic for Scotland, was icing on an already tasty cake. After such a pleasurable stay we are already planning our next trip.

    Darius2018-07-06T00:00:00Z
  • We enjoyed every minute of our stay at The Stables Cottage. The place was very cosy, clean and comfortable with everything you need for a longer stay. Jane even left us some homemade vegan flapjacks which were fab. The views from the cottage are exquisite and there's a stream that runs through the grounds and plenty of land to explore and picnic. There's also a loch at the edge of the land. It's such a peaceful and tranquil place. The perfect place to relax and rejuvenate. There are also plenty of nature trails and an amazing forest walk five mins from the grounds. Love this place.

The cottage is one of two self catering two bedroom terraced cottages sleeping four, located directly on the banks of the Crinan Canal with own allocated parking space An ideal base for couples, friends who like walking, sailing, fishing and cycling along the nearby tow path towards Lochgilphead or Crinan The garden is enclosed and the house is dog-friendly (one dog FOC) and there is excellent restaurant and bar within 10 mins walking distance Free Fibre Optic Wifi Bike Shed to rear in lane
Both cottages are dog friendly and one behaved small dog is allowed in both cottages by prior arrangement. Unlike other cottages, Crinan Canal Cottages there is no charge for dogs - which are most welcome together with their responsible owners. I do not take weekend bookings which starts on Thursday or Friday without prior notice. Both cottages have private front gardens and have free Broadband and free Fibre Optic Wi-Fi. There is a bike and wood store in the lane at the rear of the property. Minimum stays varies throughout the year. Access: Adequate off road parking available for both cottages at either end of terrace.
Crinan Canal Cottages are situated in the much sought-after hamlet of Cairnbaan, a charming area of unspoilt natural beauty approximately halfway along the Crinan Canal, which stretches from Ardrishaig to Crinan. The canal itself is picturesque and beautifully landscaped, and provides plenty of interest with the daytime passage of boats to and fro. The Crinan Canal offers wonderful scenery for fishing, canoeing, sailing, horse riding, walking and cycling, with many cycle tracks signposted throughout the glen and plenty of forests and hills nearby should you wish something more energetic. Wildlife includes many woodland birds and birds of prey, beavers in a new reserve in Knapdale, red squirrels, red and roe deer, seals, otters and occasionally pine martins. The rural location of the property offers unlimited potential for country life and outdoor pursuits. It is within easy reach of several marinas and is in the heart of the renowned west coast sailing area with the coastline and islands to the west offering superb sailing. Boats can be chartered from Crinan harbour and there are trips around the islands where it is possible to see whales, porpoise, seals, many sea birds including golden and white-tailed eagles, and the spectacular Corryvreckan Whirlpools.
  • A sweet little cottage in the wilderness, lochgilphead just down the road, take paulines tips for trips as they are worthwhile. Great for a couple or small family. Everything worked fine and nice and cosy.

  • A comfortable well appointed property situated beside the Crinan canal and handy for provisions at nearby Lochgilhead.

  • Beautiful cottage, home away from home. Immaculate and cosy. Pauline the host is fantastic. Lots of local tips for places to go and things to do. Would highly recommend staying here.

  • We had a great time at Paulines house. There is PLENTY of things to do in the area and Pauline gave us lots of suggestions. The house was very clean and cosy. We could even sit outside in the garden.

    Ulrike2019-08-17T00:00:00Z
  • My daughter and I had a lovely stay at Pauline's cottage (No. 8). The cottage is very cosy and comfortable. There's so much to see and do in the area that we could have stayed longer and we would definitely return. We enjoyed visiting the many prehistoric sites in the area, hired bikes from Lochgilphead to cycle along the Crinan Canal and went on a guided beaver walk.

    Kath2019-05-23T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely cottage, absolutely perfect for my guys. Will definitely book again.

    Megan2019-02-08T00:00:00Z
  • Pauline was fantastic from the word go, lots of useful local knowledge, a tour around the cottage on arrival and plenty of instructions on things like the fireplace, i'd reccomend a stay there anytime

    Alan2018-11-23T00:00:00Z
  • No8 is a lovely little cottage in a very picturesque area of Scotland. It provided a great base to explore the West Coast and the tips which Pauline provided meant we were never stuck for anything to do, despite the poor weather. Hiring bikes from Lochgilphead meant we could go further too! All in all, a great family holiday in an area of Scotland I love.

  • A fantastic place to stay and excellent hosts. We had a brilliant weeks getaway here. The location was perfect for a relaxing stay, with many local attractions on the doorstep. The place was well equipped, spotlessly clean and regardless of the inclement weather gave us plenty to do and see. I would highly recommend stopping here.

    Warren2019-08-17T00:00:00Z
  • It Is very hard to start a review about this beautiful spot. So many things to mention. I'll start with the hosts Alasdair and Sheena. Such a lovely people. Very nice and helpfull. Privacy very much respected but They were close enough if we needed them. Made us and our dog Toto feel at home. House was spotless. So clean that we couldn't fault anything. Located in walking distance between two lochs was so quiet we could only hear birds. Perfect Location. A lot of things to see and visit in a radius of just a few miles. Us a family of five wanting to go away from city noise and chaos it was ideal, and we came back home all very relaxed and rested. We hope to come back to Gartnagrenach again and it is defenitely worth recommending.

    Marcin2019-08-10T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay at Gartnagrenach Cottage was really perfect! The cottage has everything inside and outside what is needed and we had perfect hosts. The surroundings with beaver trail, crinan trail and the crinan channel is wonderful! It is worth to stay there.

    Sebastian2019-08-03T00:00:00Z
  • The accommodation was great with everything you could need even two TVs so my son could play his play station whilst I watched tv and my wife read in the porch (we do get on really). The scenery was fantastic and we hope to stay again. Alisdair and Sheena were great hosts

    Ian2019-06-01T00:00:00Z
  • Alasdair's place is perfect. Great location ( beaver trail in walking distance), plenty of cycle trails, beautiful lochs , highly equipped home from home, thoughtful touches , and warm welcome. We look forward to staying again soon .

    Feleena2019-04-12T00:00:00Z
  • Gartnagrenach far exceeded our expectations for our New Year Trip. Alasdair and Sheena are wonderful hosts and have an immaculate cottage with everything you could ever need and more. A perfect home from home! It is in a perfect location for walks, cycling and wildlife, including the local pine martens, deer and beaver. In fact the beaver lochs are only a short walk from the front door! Alasdair had prepared a selection of local walks and maps which we found really useful for our walks and bike rides. Our little dog was very welcome and was even provided with a bed, dog bowls and treats! Although we were out most of the time there was still plenty to do when we got back, including Sky TV, many games and even a playstation. There is also a large lockable storage space for outdoor gear which was really useful for keeping our muddy boots and bikes in. Overall, we couldn't have asked for a better cottage in such a beautiful part of Scotland. We will be back again!

Kirkland is a small timber lodge in a fantastic location with uninterrupted loch views and a woodburning stove. The lodge is set back from the quiet single track road which runs between the lodge and the loch. You can see otters, seals and osprey. The woodland garden is visited by deer, red squirrels and many wild birds. Whether you are looking for a romantic retreat or a nature lover's paradise, you will find it here in the perfect place to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Kirkland is not large - the total floor area is approximately 50 square metres but the situation is fantastic and it has everything you could need for a self catering holiday with lots of extras to make your stay special. The kitchen, dining and sitting room are open plan with double height ceiling and great loch views from your sofa and dining table. As well as electric heating, there is a woodburning stove to keep you cosy. There is one large bedroom which has a king size bed (5ft wide x 6ft 6inches long) and a single day bed. The bathroom has a shower, toilet and wash-hand basin.
Achnamara is a little known part of Mid Argyll, those who find it return year after year. Off the beaten track but only 20 minutes from Lochgilphead, the nearest town.
  • A lovely place right by the loch.

    James2018-08-31T00:00:00Z
  • We spent a wonderful week in December at Kirkland. Jane greeted us with a burning stove fire and a lemon cake. The cottage is very lovingly furnished and equipped with everything necessary (and more). Jane and James are very prudent landlords and available with help and advice.

    Christine2018-01-05T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay at Kirkland was perfect: comfortable, clean, really well organized and hosted by Jane (who baked us an irresistible welcome cake), and above all in the most beautiful and peaceful location. That's the great thing about Kirkland - it's remote (2.5 hours drive from Glasgow) but also in the middle of things to do and see (Kilmartin museum and pre-historic sites, Crinan canal, wildlife everywhere). Or you can just relax and do very little in the cosy lodge! We'll be back for sure

    Jeremy2017-04-21T00:00:00Z
  • A beautiful and peaceful location to spend a few days getting away from it all. It's well off the beaten track, but that's all part of the attraction. A lovely and cosy lodge with an extremely well equipped kitchen. The wood burner was already lit on arrival and Jane & James made sure I knew where things were and were available should I need anything else (although I didn't). I'll certainly be back in the area to explore further and Kirkland will be high on my list of places to stay when I do return.

    Jonathan2016-12-04T00:00:00Z
  • This was such a lovely break- beautiful lodge with the lake on our doorstep. Otters every night- blessed! Thank you Jane!

    Blythe2016-06-11T00:00:00Z
  • The fire was lit, the chalet cosy and clean and unbelievably well appointed, and there was a delicious lemon sponge for afternoon tea. The chalet is really well located for fabulous walks, wildlife spotting, birds, otters and seals. You want for nothing at Kirkland.

    Rona2016-04-18T00:00:00Z
  • This accommodation is wonderfully situated in a very underrated area of Scotland. It is perfectly organised for 3 people (couple plus one extra), unbelievably well equipped to a high quality, and although compact is not in the least cramped. For off-season visits, you will be toasty warm with a more-than-adequate wood burner (fuel provided) and back-up electric heating when you haven't time to get the burner going. "Cosy" is a very accurate description, in a positive way. There is also a large and excellent collection of books. Beds very comfortable. The Christmas decoration was a nice touch. It was nice sitting in the summer house, even in winter. It isn't clear from the picture, but the lodge is on the land side of the road, but being a dead-end road to nowhere it isn't an issue. Host helpful and unobtrusive.

    Ivan2016-01-05T00:00:00Z
  • Jane has done everything to ensure that you immediately feel at the property well. It lacks a nothing. Whether spices and oil for cooking or a welcome cake, you quickly feel at home.

Linnet Cottage is a two-bedroom, semi-detached cottage, on the banks of the Crinan Canal, "Britain's most scenic short-cut". Local shops and hotels are an easy stroll. The location is ideal for island-hopping (ferries to Islay, Jura, Arran, Mull and the Hebrides within an hour's drive), exploring Kilmartin Glen with its dozens of prehistoric sites, cycling of all sorts and gentle walks along the canal or through the forests of mid-Argyle. Great golf, food and whisky on your doorstep!
Linnet Cottage has been my holiday home for almost 20 years now. I bought it in 1999, and I never tire of the place. Ardrishaig is an old fishing village, but when the Silver Darlings left it re-invented itself as a haven for yachts, the entry to the Crinan Canal, and a gateway to the islands.
Kilmartin Glen would be on my must-see list. As well as the stone circle and standing stones at Lady Temple Wood, it's great fun to climb down into two of the cairns which are scattered along the line of the Glen. The tearoom at the heritage centre does great salads and cakes - if it's sunny, you can eat in the courtyard, but they also have a beautiful conservatory hidden downstairs, which is my brunch spot when I get the chance. There's a couple of less well known things you might want to do. IF it doesn't rain, a ten minute walk from the Kilmartin Road takes you to the top of Dunadd, which is where we used to crown our kings. There's a footprint and a bowl scooped out of the rock at the top of the hill, where the old fort used to be. I get fascinated by the Cup and Ring marks that are scattered across Scotland and Ireland. No one can agree what these decorations on rock-faces mean, which is part of the fun. The best site is at Achnabrek, which is a couple of miles north of Lochgilphead on the road to Kilmartin. If you're up for a short walk, I like hanging out at the Crinan end of the canal - there's a woodland walk that starts there (at the last lock before you come into the basin) and that gives great views out to to Islay and Jura, and back up North. If it rains? Go to the seafood cabin at Skipness - brilliant fresh shellfish, and the best orange sponge around (the secret is that they use their own duck eggs). If the weather breaks, you can walk around the castle. Or, you can do what I do - grab a book and sit in my little porch, watching the wet people on the yachts. Oh - if you like whisky, stop off at Loch Fyne Whiskies in Inveraray - they have an amazing selection. The Square Peg in Lochgilphead is good for local gifts.
  • Lovely and homely place to stay would defo recommend ☺️

  • Perfect location on the canal!

    Mary Lou2019-08-10T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay at Michael’s homely and cosy cottage by the canal. Perfectly located to explore the surrounding areas, we travelled to Oban, Inveraray and Kilmartin during our stay. The scenery all around the area is stunning and watching the boats sail by on the canal was very relaxing!

    Craig2019-08-03T00:00:00Z
  • Michael’s place is ideal for a family of 4. It had everything we needed. It’s situated right on the canal, which is great for walking or cycling along. Though Scottish weather isn’t guaranteed, we loved sitting in the conservatory listening to the rain pattering on the roof! And we appreciated the family board games too.

The Byre is bijou, self catering accommodation for two in the picturesque sailing village of Tayvallich. Formerly a cattle shed, The Byre has recently been upgraded to a high standard and comprises a living area/kitchen, a double bedroom and shower room/WC.
Tayvallich is a small fishing and sailing village on the shores of Loch Sween, on the West coast of Scotland. The village enjoys spectacular scenery and has a vibrant community. The Byre is on the edge of Taynish Estate, a site of special scientific interest. Red squirrels, greater spotted woodpeckers, goldfinches, greenfinches, siskins and many other species of bird are seen regularly in the garden. The occasional wildcat has been spotted and roe deer are seen from time to time. The village has a small shop and a pub which serves good food.
  • We spent two wonderful days at The Byre. The accommodation was perfect for us- clean, cosy, comfortable and well-equipped. Mary was very friendly and helpful. Can thoroughly recommend.

Lovely well furnished and equipped 3 bed flat with views over Loch Gilp to front and Crinan Canal to rear. Smart TV, WiFi, washing machine and dishwasher. Comfortable lounge with log burning stove. Electric central heating. Car parking space, backs onto Crinan Canal. Great for walking, cycling, wildlife watching and archaeological sites at Kilmartin. Only 2hrs from Glasgow by car and also direct bus (926) from Buchanan bus station drops you outside. Bird and mammal watch from your home.
4 South Park Cottages is a new holiday home which I want to share via AirBnB. Its on the Glenburn Road in Ardrishaig just before the Grey Gull Hotel as to travel from Lochgilphead. The village is now best known for yachts because of the Crinan Canal which links the sea lochs. You have the use of the entire flat, which has three bedrooms, a lounge and kitchen, a bathroom with bath and shower. There is a parking space at the back of the cottage for one car and there is a garden at the front with a bench and table and chairs in the shed.
Ardrishaig is best known as the starting point of the Crinan Canal, a fine example of 19th century engineering known as ‘Britain’s most beautiful shortcut’. The Grey Gull Inn is next door to the flat and has a Bar and Restaurant which offers meals, light snacks, wines and beers. Ardrishaig is a great base for exploring the area and outdoor activities including walking, cycling, wildlife watching (beavers in Knapdale) and all sorts of birds and mammals in and around Loch Gilp and Loch Fyne.

A light and very spacious loft room overlooking the picturesque Crinan Canal. The large top floor has amazing views and a wood burning stove. It is mainly self-contained with a sleeping area, living area and basic cooking facilities. There are two bathrooms in the house which are shared with me and my son. I provide a kettle, toaster, microwave, small fridge and a variety of basic foods, so you can be independent but you are welcome to use my large kitchen for more cooking. A warm welcome awaits
The loft room spans the entire top floor of the house, with 6 velux windows to let the light in all day. The sleeping area has a double bed, a small wooden closet, a bedside table with drawers. There is also a day bed that pulls out to another double bed. The living/relaxing area has a 5 seater sofa, wood burning stove, full internet TV and a slection of DVD's and books. I have provided camping style kitchen facilities, with a kettle, toaster, combination microwave, small fridge, crockery and cutlery. It will be stocked with foodstuffs for a continental style breakfast. You can use the facilities to cook your own meals but if you prefer to make something more you are more than welcome to use the big kitchen in the house. Alternatively, there are lots of great places to eat out. For bathrooms there is a bathroom with a shower on the floor below the loft and two floors below is a bathroom with a bath. Both of these you will have full access to.
The Crinan Canal is described as the 'most beautiful shortcut in Britain' and Braeface is situated right next to it at Bellanoch Basin. It is a Grade 2 listed stone building, believed to have been built in the early 19th century to house the engineers involved in the construction of the canal which began in 1801. Bellanoch Basin is a small hamlet with about 10 houses, it is nice and quiet with one road that leads to the village of Crinan, 2 miles away, that provides the western entrance to the Crinan Canal from the Atlantic. Crinan has a lovely hotel with a bar, seafood bar and restuarant for lunches and dinner. The Crinan Coffee shop is a gorgeous place to sit during the day and watch the boats entering and leaving the canal.
  • Great place to stay, Katie was warm and welcoming. We could have easily stayed longer. Highly recommended. Thanks again

  • What can I say? We agreed with all the previous reviews! The living space is cosy and spacious with many interesting touches. The scenery is truly stunning, especially if blessed with fine weather. Katie is very friendly and welcoming. And the company of the cat by the wood burning stove was an unexpected bonus! If you like nature there are many trails and scenic spots to discover nearby. I believe we only scratched the surface, located as we were in one of the forty National Scenic Areas of Scotland. It was everything we could have hoped for, for a quiet two-night getaway over the new year. Thanks, Katie, for a wonderful stay!

  • A really excellent stay in a beautiful house in a beautiful place. Katie directed us to a delicious Seafood Bar at Crinan Hotel 2 miles away, and we then spent the rest of the evening back at the house, sitting by our own wood burner, reading interesting books we found in the room. Very generous breakfast in the morning, with so many thoughtful touches including a microwave egg poacher, with instructions! 100% recommended.

  • It was an honor and a pleasure to have been able to stay at Katie’s lovely home. The house and accommodations are exactly as they appear in the pictures and a little bit nicer. Katie was very nice, welcoming, her breakfast setup was very much appreciated and the views from her place into the sea are something amazing to wake up to. The place is very clean, Katie is a great communicator and above all very friendly. I would recommend her place to whomever is considering booking it.

  • We have spent two nights at Don and Julie’s place and we are pleased we’ve picked their home! Most of all, there is no many places which are child friendly and theirs definitely is! We had all the arrangements made with Don and Julie upon arrival and it was all as expected, great communication and reassurance when I had questions. We all enjoyed our break away from home, thank you for having us!

    Gosia2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • Don and Julie are extraordinary hosts and we fully enjoyed every minute of our stay there! From leaving the door open as we just missed them upon arrival, to letting us use the whole kitchen, offering wine, cake and free apples from their garden, and generally being super friendly and enjoyable to talk to, we really enjoyed our stay from the first to the last minute. Needless to say, they always answered messages immediately, were flexible about check-in and check-out and the place had everything we could have needed. All we wish now is that we had had more time and better weather to explore more of the surroundings based on all the tips we got. All in all, we can really recommend staying with Don!

  • We were very happy to stay at Gordon and Maureen's place again, which proved incredibly comfortable and warm, thanks to the luxurious underfloor heating! The weather outside was very cold with a mixture of snow and sleet, so the creature comforts were very much appreciated. Everything you could possibly need is there and the double bed is definitely the largest and most comfortable we have ever slept on!

    Chris2020-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • We honestly couldn't have had a nicer time at Gordon and Maureen's place. Gordon gave us great advice finding the place and with places to eat and drink close by. He was attentive without being overbearing and would have struggled to be more accomodating. On top of all this, the Lochside Studio is absolutely stunning inside and out. Could absolutely not recommend enough on any budget. Just home and investigating getting a waterfall fitted in our back garden...

  • Maureen and Gordon gave us such a lovely welcome. The studio is very spacious, spotlessly clean, beautifully furnished and has everything you need. Ann2019-11-25T00:00:00Z
  • The Studio is warm and very clean and stylishly decorated. You are welcomed with breakfast products including cereal, eggs, milk and butter plus some biscuits. We found The Studio well equipped and very comfortable. A heating problem on our arrival was dealt with promptly and Gordon revisited to ensure the heating was still working correctly. Sadly our weather was atrocious but with a bit of sunshine it would be a delightful spot to just sit and relax. Just a note: due to the heavy rainfall the waterfall behind the house could be heard in the bedroom. To some this will be soothing to others maybe not! However I would still recommend The Studio to other travellers.

    Christine2019-10-11T00:00:00Z
  • Excellent accommodation. Modern space with all amenities including underfloor heating. We loved the loch view out front but even more the waterfall right at the back. Mesmerising and relaxing. Short walk to Crinan canal. Would definitely return.

  • Gordon and Maureen's studio is the perfect home base to explore Argyll and the western isles. A 1hr 15min drive north to Oban and only 30mins south to the ferry in Tarbert. It also comes equipped with all the amenities we needed, from a washer/dryer to all sorts of travel and tourism reading materials, and fresh milk and eggs provided by Maureen and Gordon as well! And plenty of friendly company at the quaint Argyll pub a short 5min walk away. Would absolutely stay again in this part of the country!

    Chip2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • This place was amazing- clean, well laid out and a great base for so many “adventures “ in the area. Whether you are into history, hiking or hopping around the many nearby islands, this is a great stay. The hosts were wonderful and always helpful if needed.

Crinan Hotel is a magnificently eccentric hotel on Scotland's beautiful west coast. Our guests are treated to many original and authentic touches and a charming artistic flair. Visitors enjoy genuine hospitality in a hotel which respects its history and place in a stunning and wild environment. Although we cannot always guarantee specific room requests all of the hotel bedrooms do have breath taking views of the sea, and each room is individually decorated and dedicated to a Scottish artist

Our canalside cottage, our home for much of the year, is good for couples, friends, solos, cyclists, walkers, people wanting to explore Argyll and the West Coast, and for families. The cottage has a real country feel, the garden is enclosed and the house is dog-friendly; an excellent restaurant and bar, a mere 150 metres away. You can while away the days simply watching the world go by on the canal or you can get out and about to enjoy the beauty of Argyll and Scotland's rugged west coast.
The Crinan Canal was opened in 1801 and the cottage was originally built as the lock-keepers' bothy when the boats passing through the canal were towed by horses; the smaller cottage next door was originally the stables. Our cottage has been extended a few times and modernised but retains a great deal of old world charm. It's certainly not a modern semi!
The Crinan Canal and the surrounding area is one of the most beautiful areas of Scotland. There are a multitude of outdoor activities, historical sites and beauty spots to visit. Or you could just do some "gongoozling" - the art of watching the world go by on the canal right outside your door at the cottage.
  • Charming, cozy cottage on the loch. A perfect place to cook and settling in. We played games at night and toured the beautiful area, complete with castles during the day. We will stay here at every opportunity. Lex is an attentive host and responds to any correspondence promptly.

  • Lex and Brendan's cottage right beside Lock 6 on the Crinnan Canal is absolutely fabulous. Fantastic Super hosts at every level. We visited for Hogmanay so we used the peat/log burning fire a lot. The cottage is super cozy and very comfortable. So many quirky aspects as well. Excellent communication from our hosts and nothing was any trouble. A wonderful week was had by all and I cannot recommend this little gem enough. Fabulous!!!

Auchenbeag, meaning “small field” in Gaelic, is a beautiful house, set in almost an acre of woodland, in the small fishing village of Tayvallich, on the West Coast of Scotland, in Argyll. - HOUSE IS BOOKED SATURDAY TO SATURDAY IN PEAK PERIODS - Built in 2007, Auchenbeag is designed to take full advantage of it’s elevated position, to provide stunning and unrivalled, sea views across Loch Sween. The location in Tayvallich also means that you can walk from the house to all amenities.
Auchenbeag is the perfect destination for every type of break; a family adventure; cycling, fishing, kayaking, walking and exploring, swimming in the Atlantic Ocean at Carsaig Bay; taking the Passenger Ferry, over to the stunning Isle of Jura; a venue for a special celebration; Christmas, New Year, family anniversaries and celebrations, - we even had a surprise marriage proposal here in 2015! - or maybe you’re ready for a very peaceful adult holiday; enjoying the seafood at the award winning Tayvallich Inn, walking to the Crinan Hotel for lunch or simply relaxing………..you can do as much, or as little, as you wish in this idyllic place. Auchenbeag is a “home from home” with underfloor heating throughout, 4 bedrooms, an open plan dining kitchen and a sitting room, both of which enjoy beautiful, uninterrupted views across Loch Sween. There is a Bose speaker system which allows you to play music directly from your phone or tablet using Bluetooth or connect directly to the Wi-Fi network. The sitting room has a flat screen television with Freeview channels, DVD player and a selection of DVDs, games, jigsaws and books. There is Wi-Fi Internet Access throughout the house. Outside, the garden extends to over an acre and is divided into a landscaped area on the headland, and woodland with bluebell paths on the slopes. We also have several places for you to sit in the garden and enjoy the views, read your book or just to sit quietly watching the world go by, you may even spot some of the beautiful deer who often visit us regularly! There is a large terrace area with wooden table and chairs for “al fresco” dining, as well as a traditional barbecue. Ample parking space for several cars with a carport providing sheltered cover for storing bikes, wetsuits, boots etc. Central heating, electricity, towels and bedding are included in your Auchenbeag rental. There is no landline in the house, however the Wi-Fi is available throughout all rooms and has a good speed. Mobile phones on Vodafone have good reception; other networks do not work as well. There is a payphone opposite the village shop. The garden extends to over an acre and is divided into a landscaped area on the headland and amenity woodland with bluebell paths on the slopes. There is ample room for parking with a carport providing sheltered covering.
Taynish Nature Reserve is just on our doorstep, on the western edge of Tayvallich and is a haven of peaceful woodlands interspersed with grassland, heath, saltmarsh and stunning shoreline. You can either take a leisurely walk from the house down to the Reserve or take your car to the car park in just a few minutes. The surrounding hills offer gentle to moderate climbs, leading to the most fantastic viewpoints and beautiful spots to picnic. There are also lots of opportunities to fish in the sea and in the hill lochs.

  • Absolute recommendation for families! The house is situated on a hillside and is surrounded by a garden where our dog could play. It is very well equipped and offers a lot of space. Iain is an excellent host and had already sent us hints and explanations in advance. It was absolutely great and we felt really good and recovered - thanks again!

  • Iain's place has everything you need for a wonderful holiday. The views are great and the village of Tayvallich is beautiful. We all enjoyed ourselves and would definitely come back.

  • Auchenbeag is in a fantastic situation with possibly the best views in Tayvallich. The house is very well appointed and eight of us really enjoyed our stay. Two of the rooms are bunk bed rooms, perhaps more suitable for children than adults. Great dining areas both indoors and outside. Thoroughly recommend this beautiful house.

    Alastair2018-05-05T00:00:00Z
  • What a Place. Perfect for walking with lots of remote areas to explore. Tayvallich itself is a beautiful little village. The home offers fantastic views across the harbour of Loch Sween. There are plenty of great walks up the road where the holiday home is situated. One of which brings you to one of the surrounding mountain peaks which provide stunning views across to Jura. Tayvallich is also well situated if you are wanting to visit Jura as there is a small ferry that leaves from the harbour that takes about an hour. Would definitely come again in the future.

Beautiful waterside cottage situated in a quiet secluded position on a lane leading only to the famous Crinan Harbour. Bellanoch is an area of outstanding natural beauty just a few minutes walk from one of the UKs rainforests! The cottage sleeps 4 in 2 bedrooms and has been beautifully restored throughout, retaining charm with the occasional quirk. The cottage has a cosy wood burning stove, central heating, an AGA cooker, solid oak or flagstone floors, huge shower & beautiful private garden.
This cottage has been lovingly restored to include a mixture of traditional seaside cottage luxury with the added touches of a much loved family home. From the extensive book and DVD collection for snugly rainy days or the binoculars for birdwatching and the hand carved sticks for walking this cottage caters for all. The cottage is only yards from the water and has off road parking. Guests can bring their own boats to launch from nearby Crinan Harbour or enjoy a walk or cycle along the Crinan Canal with wonderful seafood restaurant, a cosy pub and teashop a short drive or “leisurely” walk away. The cottage benefits from central heating and a lovely wood burning stove. The kitchen has mod cons and a wondeful bright red electric AGA cooker. Upstairs are two bedrooms sleeping 4 on quality cotton bedding and a huge luxury shower and wc. The cottage has its own private garden with outdoor seating and views of the hills and forest. WiFi brings the world in but only if you want it to....
The cottage is close to many things! Incredible local walks from the door and further afield, beaches, forest and the Crinan Canal. There is loch and sea fishing available locally, cycle hire and boat trips to the Corryvrecken whirl pool and wildlife spotting on the islands. A number of excellent gardens are open locally including the Botanic Gardens a boat ride away from Tarbert which is full of galleries and gift shops. Inverary boasts more gardens, a stunning castle, historic prison, outdoor adventure centre and wonderful shops. 50 minutes further north is Oban for shopping, cinema, tours, outdoor sports and distilleries. More locally just 3 miles away is the small town of Lochgilphead with shops, supermarket, doctors, dentist etc. There is also a swimming pool, library and playground. The cottage is bursting with information about things to see and do!
  • Lovely cosy house, located right on the canal. Some have mentioned the closeness to the road, but this didn't bother us in the slightest. The cars are few and far between and they weren't noticeable. The house is very clean, and everything is nicely kitted out. We used the fire a few times (logs are available from the local garage), and it was nice and warm. There is underfloor heating in the kitchen and the central heating works well. The bathroom is very stylish, and the bed was comfortable. We slept very well. It is a peaceful location, with nice views out across the canal to the hills (especially when the sun comes out). Crinan is a short drive away, but it is walkable if you want to dine at the seafood restaurant there and have a couple of drinks (as we did).

  • Em is a great host she really went the extra mile to make us feel at home. Its a pity there is a road in front of the house but otherwise its a really beautiful cottage- very spacious and has a wonderful back garden to relax in. Em also gave us many tips and advice about that to do in the area. Highly recommend this cottage!

    Angie2019-07-27T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay here! The house is beautiful and in an amazing location with great views and lots of places to visit within easy distances. The house is clearly loved by the owners and is really comfortable, well thought out and stylish with a really well stocked kitchen. Our toddler announced to us "I love this house!" This is high praise given that it was the 4th place we'd stayed on our travels around Scotland! Em was a great host and sent us an email with lots of tips for places to visit in the area. We particularly loved Kilmory Bay, a beautiful, remote white sand beach about 30 mins drive along a coast road (the drive is a treat in itself). Kilmartin Glen has ancient standing stones, cairns and Dunadd, the hilltop fort that was home of the first Scotttish kings as well as a museum with a really good cafe which is a great place to dry out if the Scottish weather closes in! I can't recommend this place highly enough if you want a comfortable home to explore a beautiful part of Scotland from!

  • We had an absolutely wonderful week at Em's cottage. The cottage is warm and cosy, super clean, beautifully decorated and in a perfect location. We loved the walks along the canals and the 'rainforrest' walk as well. The kitchen is very well equipped and the beds comfortable, there was a good selection of magazines and DVDs for those rainy days. The backyard is lovely and a perfect place for playing with children. We absolutely loved staying here and will be back again!

Boat trips can be taken in the summer from Crinan and Ardfern including the exciting boat trip to The Corryvreckan whirlpool. Seaside is a great base for touring the west coast and the famous Mull of Kintyre on The Atlantic Coast. The Isles of Arran, Gigha, Islay (8 malt whisky distilleries) and Jura are nearby as is the colourful fishing village of Tarbert, Loch Fyne. The archaeology museum, the standing stones and ancient burial sites at Kilmartin are about 9 miles north, a for those interested in ruined castles. In nearby Lochgilphead there are a selection of eateries and gift shops with quality goods. There is also a very good butcher in the main street in Lochgilphead as well as a large supermarket at the top of the town. For folk wishing to hire a bike or for a repair there is an excellent bike shop on the main street in Lochgilphead. I am busy with my work in Oban, especially in the summer, but am available by mobile phone or my mum, Anne can assist guests. This area has outstanding natural beauty with wonderful views of the loch and birdlife from the garden. We are on the main A82/A83 route from Glasgow and Glasgow airport. Approx 2 - 2.5 hours. Good bus service by City Link / West Coast Motors from Buchanan Street bus station in Glasgow with links from Edinburgh and other cities and towns. Plenty of parking space
Quiet with a pleasant garden. Nearby walks and cycle rides along the Crinan Canal. The sea shore at the bottom of the garden - the sight and sounds of oyster catchers herons eider ducks and many other birds
  • Great place to stay, will deff stay again when I’m next in the area.

  • Fabulous house, very spacious and exceptionally clean. Loved the warm homely feel, lots of towels & special little touches of fresh flowers. Also the plentiful breakfast supplies. The best place to stay in Ardrishaig. Thank you

  • Large ground floor space which was well presented, clean and comfortable. We enjoyed the location right near access to the canal and the shore. We cycled to Crinan which was lovely then onto Kilmartin. Flat route all the way and if you like history/archaeology some amazing sites to be seen. The house is very well equipped with everything you could need. Beds really comfortable and easy check in. All in all a great stay (albeit too short) and we hope to visit again soon. Would definitely recommend.

  • My family and I spend 2 lovely nights in this super clean and comfortable accommodation. Thank you Lindsay.

  • We loved the house and the location. The perfectly stocked kitchen and the close grocery store made it easy to do some of our own meals. We really enjoyed watching the tide and exploring the area. Would love to see the beds updated to something a bit softer but otherwise was a perfect stay. Thank you!

  • Seaside House is spacious and comfortable with all you need at hand.

    Mike2019-06-23T00:00:00Z
  • Second stay at Seaside, which says it all. A great place to relax and unwind in, nothing better than having the first coffee of the day sitting on the shore watching the tide go out with and your wellied up child exploring the tide line with the chirring of oystercatchers as a soundtrack.

  • The House is incredibly beauty. Every detail is perfect. The view on the Seaside is amazing. You feel at home in every second you stay, and the kindness of Lindsay and Ela makes this even more warm. Hope to come back in Scotland and Seaside House, where we left a part of our hearts.

  • Don's place was fantastic. the room is well tended to and very neat and comfy. The house is well positioned especially if you were there to do what i was which was visit the taynish peninsula and head out around kilmartin looking at neolothic sites. He was also incredibly hospitable and lovely to chat with. We were leaving somewhat early and he whipped up a great, simple breakfast with a TON of personal touches from his garden which was truly lovely. I would be remiss if i didn't include that he has a very adorable and mellow dog hanging around who loves attention. highly recommend!

  • Lovely house with a big, wild garden. This is sort of a "house share," so the kitchen, common area and bathroom are shared with other guests as well as the hosts. My husband and I loved it because we like getting to know people, and our hosts were lovely. Their dog was so sweet and well behaved and loved to get pets almost as much as I liked to give them!

  • We enjoyed a relaxing 3 nights with Don and Julie. They are such welcoming hosts we would highly recommend their place. There are lots of thoughtful and homely touches. It's a tranquil place in a beautiful part of Scotland. The communication was excellent too. Thanks for everything and we hope to come back sometime.

  • Don, Julie and Romeo the dog are fantastic, warm welcoming hosts. Nothing was too much trouble and even catered for my gluten free diet. We even sampled some of Don's fresh home grown mint tea. Our bedroom had a beautiful view out over the sea. Will definitely stay again and highly recommend
