Places to stay in Achmelvich
Unique, architect designed, one bedroom, self-contained accommodation for up to two people, situated on our croft in Inverkirkaig near Lochinver. We have 2 purpose-built micro-houses (Lazybed Accommodation) both privately situated and surrounded by stunning scenery. It is possible to book either cabin (for less) through us directly if you wish.
Lazybed is a bespoke micro-house with an interior of 31sqm, built in 2011 by North Woods Construction Ltd. utilising 100% renewable Scottish timber. The high sloping ceiling and 3 metre front windows create a roomy, luxurious, livable space tucked in amongst trees. Sheep’s wool insulates the property throughout whilst hot water is powered by a mini, Norwegian-manufactured, boiler system. The main room has a wood-burning stove (and electric heater) keeping the cabin lovely and warm for those occasions when the weather turns inclement. The accommodation consists of a lounge /well equipped kitchen, a separate cosy kingsize/twin bedroom, a bathroom with a walk-in shower, toilet and wash hand basin. There is a generously sized deck area with views South West to Inverkirkaig’s tranquil sea loch and the wonderfully remote peninsular of Rubha na Breige. We now have another cabin for holiday bookings (the Batbox) on the east side of our bungalow and about 65 metres from Lazybed. It is possible to book either cabin (for less) through us directly. Please check all terms & cancellation conditions before making a booking.
Lazybed is located, adjacent to the owner's house, on their small croft in Inverkirkaig, a lovely coastal settlement, a few miles south of Lochinver and about 40 miles north of Ullapool. This area of the magnificent North West Highlands is known as Assynt, a geographically and geologically remarkable landscape. Many of Scotland’s most individual and charismatic mountains are close by and the stunning coastline stretches north to the white sandy beaches of Achmelvich, Oldshoremore and Sandwood Bay and south to the wild, rocky coves and shell sands of Wester Ross. A multitude of trout-filled lochs cover the hinterland and the beautiful River Kirkaig, with its excellent salmon fishing and waterfall path, is only 10 minutes walk from the door. Continue beyond the falls passing Fionn Loch and eventually reach the summit of Suilven, northern Scotland’s most iconic peak. Walking, kayaking, fishing or simply relaxing, this beautiful area of Scotland has it all.
  • Truly magical place. Highly recommended.

  • We spent our New Year’s Eve in the cabin and it was the perfect way to see in the new year completely secluded, with great views of the the bay and the stars at night. The cabin has everything you need and the log burner kept it lovely and toasty!

  • This is a lovely place to stay, everything required for a short stay and super helpful hosts too. We loved the garden, the views, the bench, everything!

  • We stayed at the Lazybed cabin for our mini-moon and it was a perfect escape from the hecticness of our special day. The place was perfect . David and Gita included thoughtful extra touches for us to celebrate our wedding, and were also incredibly helpful when we had car trouble! Even if the weather was mainly rubbish we had a fab time hanging out by the fire, and when the sun came out, nothing beat sitting on the bench with a beer, reading and looking over the Loch 💕

  • A lovely cabin in a beautiful part of the world. Well worth a visit

  • The Lazybed was superb. We loved its eco credentials and the house has been really well thought through. We will definitely stay again and have recommended the Lazybed to several friends. The photos don't do this place justice, hugely snug and spacious. The surrounding area is amazing and the lazybed is fantastically located for hiking. Thanks again Gita for your great hospitality!

Our Cow Shed glamping shed is unique and a bit quirky. If you are looking to get away to the peace and tranquility of the highlands then look no further. The Cow Shed has fitted kitchen, double bed and wood burning stove, with new shower room and toilet facilities to the outside of the building. Ideal for couples looking for something a bit different. The Cow Shed can be enjoyed anytime of the year, as it is heated with a wood burning stove or electric heaters so you will not go cold.
Where the Cow Shed is located is ideal for just getting away it looks onto the sea where you have some amazing views. Large fishing boats and Cruise ships pass in the summer and winter months also with the occasional sailing boat. There are some nice places to go fishing if that is your interest and some amazing walks from advanced hill walking to just a relaxing walk taking in the scenery. If you are into whale or dolphin spotting then there is a great place to do this near Stoer Light House this is about a 4 mile walk from the Cow Shed.
  • We had such an amazing stay. Super remote, quiet and beautiful. Great hosts, very friendly and accommodating. Wish we could have stayed longer!

  • Really nice place in a beautiful area of the country. The hosts were incredibly helpful. We got into a bit of bother on the road and Mark was an absolute lifesaver. We highly recommend this location.

  • The cowshed is is set in beautiful setting, so peaceful. You can hear the waves on the beach which is so relaxing. The accommodation itself is cosy and comforting, beautifully set out with everything you need. Sitting by the log fire with a wine or coffee just relaxing. Memorable.

  • We loved it here. It's a lovely converted building, that was much more spacious than I had expected, in an amazing location with all the amenities you would need. We particularly loved the wood burning stove. Would highly recommend!

    Katie2019-11-14T00:00:00Z
  • This place is SO special. It’s much bigger inside than the photos show and SO cosy. Falling asleep in front of the fire was a dream. There is a beautiful walk down to a really stunning white sand beach and the view from the cabin is lovely in the morning, especially if the sheep are grazing close by. Mark and Hilary are amazing hosts - really accommodating and friendly. What a place to live! If you want a base from which to explore the beautiful sandy beaches and coast line of west Scotland - this is the place. It’s a little slice of heaven. Thanks for having us x

    Katy2019-11-11T00:00:00Z
  • This is a very cozy hut with a full kitchen, bathroom, and a fireplace! We had an amazing time at this little place. I also believe it’s a great get away for couples!

    Maximilian2019-11-04T00:00:00Z
  • Really great stay, lovely wee building with all you need for a peaceful stay away. Hosts were lovely and we loved meeting Boomer the dog too. It's very easy to find, cosy with the burner or heater on and ample space for eating in, should you chose to! Nice little touches too with the Shortbread and dram out on the kitchen worktop for your arrival.

A modern house in an ancient landscape. In a country of beautiful landscape, Assynt in the far north west highlands stands out for its extraordinary geology, mountains, lochs and coastline. With some of the oldest rock in the world (3.5Bn years old), numerous remains of iron age settlements, abundant wild life, wild terrain and sporting activities, there is much to see and experience in this special corner of Scotland. It is remote yet accessible, being a 2 hour drive from Inverness through wonderful scenery and generally empty roads. So much so, that at certain times of the year, visitors are more likely to see red deer than other cars. The house is newly built, of solid (cross lateral) timber construction allowing for a very open and distinctive interior. With under floor heating from an air source heat pump and wood burning stove and high standards of insulation it is warm and welcoming throughout the year. The guest bedroom has its own door to the outside and ensuite shower and toilet. It is connected with the rest of the house by 10 steps from inside your room. Guests are free to use the upstairs ‘gallery’ sitting room with spectacular views of nearby sea and more distant mountains. This is where breakfast will be served as shown in one of the images. Please take note that the living room and kitchen area is also very much our own living space during the day and evening, so while it is absolutely fine if you want to sit at the table in the panorama window for a while, you will not be able to use this space as freely as if it was an area especially for guests to use. If you decide to have an evening meal with us (optional) it will be within the kitchen/living room. We are vegetarian so this is the food we serve, but we can assure you of its variety and freshness. We can provide a meal for our guests provided it fits in with other commitments we might have, so if you would like to join us for a meal on one of your evenings please enquire in advance what is possible at the time of your visit. We charge £18 pounds per person for a three course meal (not including wine or beer), you can bring what you like to drink or make a financial contribution to drinks we provide. Being a new house, the garden is in a state of development. There are always projects going on and some materials around, be it related to Nigel's artworks or generally to do with developing the garden. The house is accessed up a track through a surrounding field. There are several houses and crofts nearby, a beach with easy access to the sea and many places to walk and explore. Clashnessie has no shops, the nearest village is Lochinver (8 miles away) where there is a selection of shops, a petrol station, restaurants and other places to visit. Please click on "Location" to read our advice on eating out in Lochinver. It is possible to get to the house by public transport from Inverness, but this is likely to take a day’s travel. To explore the area and for ease of travel it is recommended guests come by car. Inverness is best reached by either train or plane, and we recommend if coming from the south of England, to use the Caledonian sleeper service that arrives in Inverness at 8.30 am. There is a Budget car rental depot five minutes from the station. We can provide further advice on routes etc if required. Assynt is often described as being in the ‘wild north west’. This is an apt description of the landscape and at times the weather. Strangely this part of Scotland often has drier weather than places further south. Being on the coast the weather is changeable with often dramatic skies and ever changing light. Highly photogenic and at times it is extraordinary to experience such variety in a short space of time. Finally, another advantage of being on the coast with wind (of varying force) there are few midges – a real bonus in the height of the summer.
Clashnessie is a small place and doesn't have any shops. The nearest village is Lochinver, 8 miles south of Clashnessie. There is also "Flossie's Beach Store" by the road in Clachtoll (approx. 2.5 miles away) where you can buy essentials and get a coffee or tea when out and about. We advise guests to make arrangements for eating out if that is what you would like to do. Compared to cities and many places in Europe, restaurants here often don't serve hot food for very late into the evening, especially in the early part of the season or later in autumn. In the summer it can get very busy too, so if you haven't booked a table you may have to wait a while until there is a table available. I am happy to give you more information if needed, but as a general rule I would say, make sure you book a table and don't plan to arrive at the restaurant of your choice too late (especially in the early part of the season (April) some restaurants don't take food orders after 7:30pm). The restaurants in Lochinver are: Lochinver Pie Shop (specialises in all sorts of pies but also serves other dishes), The Caberfeidh Dining Pub (pub bar and restaurant), Inver Lodge (higher end of the price spectrum), An Cala Cafe (serves breakfast, lunch and evening meals until around 8 in the summer), Peet's Restaurant (in the harbour area), Culag Hotel, Glen Canisp Lodge (a B&B which also serves food in the evening to non residents, approximately a mile and a half up a single track road branching off left from the main road). They all have their own websites if you want to do a bit of forward planning.
  • Andrea and Nigel are lovely hosts with an even lovelier space. The room offers amazing views of the country side, and the drive there is one beautiful scene after another. Andrea and Nigel gave us wonderful recommendations of what galleries we could find in the area, as well as showing us their own work. Breakfast was fantastic. We can't recommend this place enough, and would be delighted to stay with them (and Bruno, their wonderful dog!) again.

    Janine2019-10-11T00:00:00Z
  • This was my first time using Airbnb and Andrea and Nigel provided an outstanding first experience. They thought of everything and the set up at their home was perfect for what we needed. Private yet homey and accommodating - with the extra advantage of an awesome Bruno who welcomed us each time we got back to the house. The place is beautifully and uniquely decorated mostly with their own art which just added to the beautiful landscapes surrounding their home. Friendly people, beautiful animal and lovely home: 10/10 from me!

    Maria2019-09-29T00:00:00Z
  • Would definitely go back there, wish our stay would have been longer. Andrea and Nigel were unbelievably helpful, our car had a flat tire in the middle of nowhere and they were kind enough to pick us up there as there was no other help whatsoever from the hire company. Without them we probably would still be standing on the side of the road. The place was great with amazing views and lots to explore near by. Hope we manage to be back there soon!

  • We had a wonderfull time here in clashnessie ! The bedroom was cosy and clean, the house and garden was super cute, but the best part is the surroundings ! It feels like being in the middle of nowhere, and you can enjoy this while eating breakfast, which was amazing. The hosts were very nice with us, easy to talk to ! Would highly recommend :)

  • Striking location, intriguing hosts, beautiful accommodations, and a very gracious home for even one day. Countryside is filled with such beauty and history, an excellent choice to stay.

  • We spent one night with Andrea and her husband. Their great house is a bit out of the way, but that's why we chose the room. Great hostess, excellent breakfast, great accommodation. We would come back anytime!

    Ramona2019-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • Fabulous accommodation in such a remote part of Scotland. Wonderful hosts and enjoyed seeing Andrea's craft workshop and learning about Nigel's sculptures.

    Margaret2019-09-13T00:00:00Z
  • Andrea and Nigel are very nice people. The view is really amazing and the breakfast was really nice with lots of choices and a nice spot with an amazing view. The room and bathroom were very nice and clean. The hosts gave nice and helpfull tips about the surroundings. We had a nice and comfortable stay.

Award-winning tiny house is located the most northerly stretch of NC500, Scotland's answer to Route 66. Stay in this partly off-grid, wooden house on wheels with its breathtaking view, very close to the beach. Lots of other things to explore nearby.
The tiny house movement began in the USA as people explore the future possibilities of living in compact, low energy spaces. This tiny house was built by British trail-blazer Mark Burton (http://www.custombuiltsurrey.com/one-bed-house-on-wheels.html), who won an award from the Independent Newspaper, and has featured in numerous "lifestyle" TV programmes including Grand Designs. The tiny house in Clashnessie is the first to go largely off-grid, depending on mains supply for water and high-output electric appliances only. Supplementary power comes from photovoltaic panels and cylinder gas, and there is a composting lavatory. But this is not rough-living, and offers a shower, a fabulous king-size bed, a fridge - more or less all you need in a house, except space. The furniture has been chosen to a high design standard; this is emphatically not a caravan!
We are located on the most northerly stretch of NC500, 'Scotland's answer to Route 66' and voted one of the six most scenic coastal roads in the world by Traveller Magazine. (http://www.northcoast500.com/home.aspx). Clashnessie itself is quite simply a magic place, with a large sweep of safe sandy beach that is never busy, a fascinating coastline and rugged hinterland. The patient observer can see seals, otters, dolphins, porpoises, and sometimes orcas, as well as varied bird-life. Red deer are as common as rabbits - a nuisance to agriculture, but splendid beasts nonetheless. This is Scotland's "wild west", lying north of the Hebrides. It is one of the dark places of Europe, perfect for astronomers. The area, Assynt, is also world famous for its geology, and the tiny house sits on some of the oldest rock in the world. Just round the coast is the spectacular sea-stack, the Old Man of Stoer. The ring of local mountains - Quinag, Canisp, Suilven, Cul More and Beag, Ben More, and Stac Pollaidh, stand up dramatically on the landscape. No Munros among them except Ben More Assynt, but challenging day-climbs for all that. Brown trout abound in local lochs, and salmon fishing can be arranged by permit. There are numerous places suitable for sailing, kayaking and scuba-diving, and the "main" road, scenic, undulating single-track with passing places, makes for interesting cycling and motor-cycling. Botanists also enjoy the area for its flora including varieties of wild orchid. The nearest pub and shop are in Drumbeg, 5 miles to the north, and the hub of local activity is the scenic fishing village of Lochinver, 9 miles south, which has shops, a varied offer of social events, and 9 food outlets from a sandwich bar to a Michelin-starred restaurant. The North Assynt Estate in which the crofting "township" of Clashnessie is situated, celebrates twenty years now since its famously unprecedented tenant buy-out, since when, in an area notorious for the Highland Clearances and absentee landlords, the people finally own the land. The Gaelic language is also enjoying a revival in the area. And yes, there are midges, but we cope with them.
  • Pam is a wonderful host who will go out of her way to make your stay enjoyable. I would recommend going on her 'historical' tour as she is very knowledgeable of the area and history. The tiny house is 'tiny' but contains all the essentials you will need for a pleasant stay. It is a beautiful area with many hike opportunities.

    Tom2019-09-11T00:00:00Z
  • The Tiny House was a unique and unforgettable place to stay in a gorgeous location. The hike to the waterfall just down the lane was amazing. Host Pamela was wonderful, stocked the fridge with breakfast for us and even came to the rescue with loaner wellies when my shoes got soaked--and dried them off on her radiator overnight! The house lived up to its name--very tiny!--but a fun, cozy adventure in off-the-grid living. Be prepared for an experience a bit closer to camping than a standard b and b, but that was part of the charm.

    Allison2019-08-20T00:00:00Z
  • Definitely the best house in the north, great view, nice neighbours with cute fringes, and amazing host that gave us awesome, memorable welcome!

    Kajetan2019-08-17T00:00:00Z
  • The place is truly unique, can only recommend to visit Pamela's tiny house in Clashnessie.

    Arne2019-08-14T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic experience at Pamela's Tiny House in Clashnessie. The house has everything you need for a great stay, and the local area and people are amazing. Definitely worth the trip!

    Jonathan2019-07-29T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay at the Tiny House was amazing! The house is really small, but is has everything you need (and the bed is amazing with the most beautiful view). We stayed here for 9 days and we loved every day. When the weather would permit it, we would eat breakfast outside while enjoying the view of the beach and the waterfall. We walked al lot every day, the area is beautiful! Pamela was a great host, she was very helpful before and during our stay. She told us about nice walks in the area and she was always ready to help us if needed. This was a vacation to remember.

    Hilde2019-07-25T00:00:00Z
  • The house is located in a wonderful nature and is equipped with everything you need. Despite the size you have enough space and can enjoy the beautiful views. Pamela has explained everything in detail to us, she is a very loving and attentive hostess. We really enjoyed spending some time there. It's really an experience !. Thank you so much for everything. With very best regards Gudrun and Stefan

  • We had a great stay in the Tiny House - a wonderful place to get away from it all in a beautiful setting. Pamela was a great host and made us feel very welcome. She provided us with some great recommendations of things to do in the local area to make the most of our time here. Would definitely recommend.

  • Amazing pod and hot tub. Lovely place

    Linda2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay at this beautiful cabin as part of our nc500 journey. The space was absolutely spotless and decorated perfectly. It was also much bigger than we expected from the photos! The hot tub was very private and the fairy lights made it just perfect at nighttime as we sat looking at the stars. The little touches such as dressing gown and slippers made this stay feel luxurious. Thank you for an amazing stay!

  • A treat of a pod to stay in for the weekend. So clean, lots of nice touches like robes, slippers, ice machine for a complementary nip. the hot tub was the reason we booked and it was fantastic, overlooking lochinver harbour but not overlooked. We would definitely recommend and return.

    Lochinver, Sutherland, United Kingdom

The Cathair Dhubh Estate is tucked into the rugged Sutherland coastline on the NC500 between the villages of Lochinver and Clachtoll. Nestling in the heart of the spectacular Assynt countryside, it is a haven for wildlife lovers, hikers, fishermen, photographers and outdoor enthusiasts, not to mention those families looking for white, sandy beaches and crystal blue waters.
At Cathair Dhubh Estate the views are simply amazing! Bring your binoculars and you could be watching whales, basking sharks, porpoises and dolphins all from your window! Thistle cottage is a cosy semi-detached property looking west over the Atlantic ocean, enabling you to enjoy glorious sunsets as you relax after a hard day's hiking in the hills or a an afternoon spent frolicking on the nearby beaches. The cottage has 2 bedrooms; a double bedroom and a twin bedroom. It has a good sized family bathroom. There is a fully-fitted kitchen, incorporating an oven, hob and microwave, together with a fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer. The open plan lounge and dining area provide a comfy place to relax and is equipped with satellite TV and DVD player and CD radio. We do have Wifi but in keeping with the spirit of getting away from it all, it is quite basic and at times, elusive! There are patios leading to outside seating where you can experience the breathtaking views.
Cathair Dhubh looks out over Achmelvich Bay and is set against an awesome backdrop of sandstone mountains, with names that trip from the tongue of any walker – Quinag, Suilven, Canisp. These ancient hills are formed from some of the oldest rocks in the world and create a timeless wilderness. In the hills around the estate, wildlife and birdlife abound. Black throated divers, otters, red deer, seals, porpoise and sea birds are but a few of our neighbours. With a touch of extra vigilance, you may even happen to spot minke and pilot whales, orca and sea eagles – binoculars are a must! The coastal path from the glorious sandy shores of Achmelvich passes through on its way to the abandoned millstones at the old water mill at Port Altan ‘Abradhan. Here you will find another beautiful, secluded cove to explore minutes from your front door. If you continue along the path, you'll see the iconic silhouette of Split Rock and then the creamy sands of Clachtoll beach, another Assynt treasure which also plays host to the annual Sand Sculpture competition - a brilliant day out for families. At the entrance to the estate, lies Loch an Ordain allegedly haunted by the mythical Black dog of Creag an Ordain – a two-headed, horned beast belching fire, with a human face and eyes that glow like burning peats – you might not find him listed in many of the nature books but he abounds in local legend!! For those anglers undeterred by the prospect of the Black Dog, the hills behind Loch an Ordain cradle a network of lochs and lochans teeming with brown trout. Some lochs further afield, even have migratory Sea Trout and Salmon passing through them – there is indeed a wealth of fishing opportunities. The picturesque fishing village of Lochinver is about four miles away and provides a good range of local amenities, including two grocery stores, a butcher, a post office, 24 hour filling station, a newsagents, a variety of cafes, coffee shops and restaurants, gift shops, a chandlery, health centre, ATM and Tourist Information Centre.
  • We had a wonderful stay in the thistle cottage. The house has a great view of the sea and the house has everything you need. The environment is incredibly beautiful and there are great opportunities for hiking and fishing. Nearby is Lochinver where there are shopping and a gas station. Kate is a wonderful hostess. We were warmly welcomed.

    Eliane2019-08-10T00:00:00Z
  • The location is stunning, and all the cottages have fabulous views out to sea. There’s loads of space surrounding them, and access to a little cove ideal for launching kayaks and canoes, a tiny beach and coastal walks / running paths to the nearby beaches of Clachtoll and Achmelvich. The cottages themselves are really well laid out and exceptionally well-equipped with lots of fridge/freezer space, and all the pots, pans and equipment needed to cater for groups. Kate was a great host, easy to contact and quick to respond.

    Cal2019-07-27T00:00:00Z
  • Stunning location! Beautiful views, well equipped, warm and cosy. A really lovely base from which to explore this spectacular part of the world.

    Rebecca2019-06-15T00:00:00Z
  • This cottage is in a wonderful location with magical views and a fine array of animals outside the front door: highland cows, lambs, red deer and even saw porpoises. A great base to explore Assynt.

    Matilda2019-06-01T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing location, beautiful views, lovely walks, great paddle boarding location, nice wee cottage - loved it!

    Gilly2019-05-18T00:00:00Z
  • The property is very well equipped, warm and comfortable. Be prepared to enjoy the solitude, the sheep and perhaps deer close to the property. The autumnal light and changeable weather make the area a palette of delights for the artist or photographer. There are walks from the cottage door or just sit with a nip in the lounge and enjoy the ever changing view in comfort.

  • Would highly recommend Thistle college! The place very clean! We can't wait to come back and visit again with Alba my dog. Kate is such a welcoming host and has great attention to detail! Can't wait to come back!

  • What a superb spot. I’ve sen these cottages from afar in the past and was delighted to be able to stay there. Don’t be put off by the traditional local architecture - public convenience chic - they’re lovely inside and the situation is frankly unbeatable worldwide. Unobtrusive service, yet instant response. There’s even WiFi, although be prepared to hear the cogs grinding at Highand speed. It rocks.

Swallow Byre is situated 7 miles from Lochinver and has a peaceful outlook not far from some of the loveliest beaches in Assynt.
Whatever the weather, Swallow Byre is a cozy space to explore the area and return to warmth, woodstove and wetroom. A space to relax, walk, or just gaze at the stars.
Situated not far from the Stoer lighthouse, whose beam light can be glimpsed on a dark night, a space to "renew ones batteries"!
  • A welcoming base from which to explore the wonders of Assynt, Swallow Byre is cosy, clean and very comfortable. I'll stay again if I get the chance.

    Ruth2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • A beautiful byre in a great location for peace, relaxing and exploring. Despite it being December we were kept lovely and warm by the Rayburn and wood burner - and what an amazing bed! We would most definately recommend Swallow Byre... It was a little slice of heaven.

  • Lovely place! Jane is a great host, she even offered delicious homemade scones. The old barn is great for a weekend or week away and feels like home away from home. It is very clean. The kitchen offers everything and even more you need!

  • We loved Helen’s place! Communication was great and welcoming from the beginning and she offered many helpful suggestions. We arrived at night and were so happy to climb into such a comfortable bed. We appreciated all the nice touches like the beautiful hand soap. Little did we know the view that would greet us in the morning! Helen and her husband were away but their very kind and welcoming adult son Jack brought us the most incredible breakfast, including eggs from their chickens. Then we accompanied him while he fed and watered all the sweet animals and told us about croft life. We especially loved Polly, one of the cows. Thankfully we had brought our muck boots but we were offered wellies, as it was quite muddy. They were also helpful to keep us dry just down a tiny hill to the gorgeous beach. We rinsed boots off back at the house. We can’t recommend Helen’s place highly enough and only wished we had stayed longer - just go - you will love it.

The Byre is an old converted cow shed which has been in the family for 3 generations. recently newly renovated. its on a working croft and looks out to sea. There has been a new sun room added which has a log burining stove.
This Byre has 40 years of highland history, it was once many moons ago a cow shed which was owned by my husbands granny and grandpa.
There are lots of beautiful beaches and amazing scenery near by, also there is a small local shop which is situated within a campsite (3 miles away). The local village is 8 miles away, with many great places to eat and drink. The local people are extremely friendly and know how to make tourists feel welcome.
  • A very short but much enjoyed break at The Byre. We loved spending time in the snug watching the forever changing view in front of the log burner. An ideal base to explore a beautiful area.

    Robert2020-02-27T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely place with great views, it was especially nice getting warmed up in front of the wood burner after being out in some nasty weather.

    Alex2020-02-10T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay in the Byre was just amazing! We had some stormy weather, and it was just perfectly cozy, sitting in front of the fire and literally seeing the eye of the storm gazing at you. Heavy weather just adds to the outstanding atmosphere the Byre creates while providing solid shelter and stunning views over the land and towards the ocean. But it was not only the place but the people that made us feel welcome and at home! Thank you again, Hilary and Mark, for being so hospitable and helping!

    Kerstin & Jan2020-02-01T00:00:00Z
  • I strongly recommend The Byre as a location for a long or short visit to this beautiful part of Scotland. The house is very well equipped and comfortable.

    Rachel2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • What a find! Lovely cosey home from home, my partner stayed here whilst he was working in the area and can’t rate the Byre enough. Clean, tidy, everything you’d need. The wood burner was a massive bonus too!! Thanks Hilary and Mark

    Lauren2020-01-09T00:00:00Z
  • We thoroughly enjoyed the location and couldn't have asked for a better base for exploring Assynt and beyond. Thanks so much for sharing all of the great local points of interest/walking routes. We spent long evenings at the log burner and were very warm. Also enjoyed the views from the house once the cloud lifted. A perfect rural retreat, thanks.

    Emily2019-12-15T00:00:00Z
  • Well, my wife and I cant thank Mark and Hilary enough for allowing us to stay in there beautiful Byre. It has all the amenities you need, great shower, oodlings of hot water, a warm comfy bed and views to stimulate your senses. Either simply weather watch or plan your next adventure, sipping a steaming cup of coffee, a nice glass of vino sitting in the cosy snug with the log burner fired up. Assynt is beautiful, whatever the weather. The Byre sits perfectly on a slope looking forward to the sea which changes hourly. It is approx 25 minutes from Lochinver so you cant just "pop to the corner shop". Totally ideal for us as we wanted the feeling of remoteness to escape the chaos of our daily city lives. We cant sing enough praises for Mark and Hilary and of course there beautiful Byre. If you read this tho and want book then I will please ask kindly that you save some time for us to return. Cheers for making our Wedding Anniversary so perfect. See you again soon. Nick & Janice

Traditional stone cottage on the coast 8 miles from Lochinver, with views of sea and hill, renovated to a high standard with underfloor heating and a modern well-equipped kitchen and bathroom. A peaceful hideaway for 2 people on a working croft.
Beyond the end of the road, with views across Clashnessie Bay to the spectacular Sutherland hills of Quinag, Ben Stack, Arkle and Foinaven, you will find Laid Bothy. It is a traditional single storey stone cottage, renovated sympathetically and to a high standard. The rooms are warm and cosy, with underfloor heating under natural slate tiles. Walls are natural stone and well-insulated wood panelling. There is a well-equipped modern kitchen off the cosy living room, a high-spec. shower room, and a bedroom with a king-size double bed. There is also a large entrance hall with plenty of space for boots and coats, and a concealed washing machine. The Bothy is ideal for individuals or couples, with the bed normally set up as a king-size double, although it can be separated into two singles. There is free wifi. There is also a television which receives Freesat channels. The house is attached to a byre on one side and is set on a working croft, with rare breed Hebridean sheep, pigs and hens, and Highland cattle on the neighbouring croft. Produce from the croft may be available to purchase, depending on the time of year you visit. Laid Bothy provides a peaceful escape from the pace of modern living, without compromising on comfort and is an ideal base for exploring the magical landscape of Assynt and the Northwest Highlands.
Clashnessie Bay, with its large sweep of sand and gently sloping beach, is a short walk away (1 km round the coast or 1.5km along the road) and has a car park if you want to transport equipment there. There is also a small stony beach at the bottom of our croft where we launch our kayaks. The main beach is very safe, although we recommend wetsuits if you are going to be in the water for long! There are other excellent beaches nearby, at Clachtoll and Achmelvich, walks to suit all ages and levels, from the All Abilities Path near Loch Assynt, to the Munros of Ben More Assynt and Conival, not forgetting iconic Suilven, Quinag, which you can see from the Bothy, and the other beautiful hills of the Northwest Geopark. This is a mecca for geologists, with a visitor centre at Knockan Crag and a cafe and exhibition at Rockstop in Unapool. Those interested in historic buildings can visit the ruins of Calda House and Ardvreck Castle near Loch Assynt, the old kirk at Inchnadampf and the newly excavated broch at Clachtoll. You can go on boat trips from Lochinver and Kylesku or visit Handa Island, an RSPB reserve where puffins, guillemots, razorbills, fulmars and kittiwakes nest in the cliffs, not forgetting the skuas who may dive bomb you as you walk across the island! There are small but well-stocked licensed grocery shops in Clachtoll, Drumbeg and Lochinver and a Tesco in Ullapool. Drumbeg Stores provides a delivery service for advance orders. Lochinver is also famous for its pottery, where you can see articles being hand-painted, and its pie shop, and there are many places to eat there at all price levels, including a Michelin-starred restaurant.
  • Fantastic spot in an absolutely beautiful spot. Has a really nice cosy cottage feel to it, and nice and warm, especially at this time of the year. My girlfriend and I loved the long weekend spent at this Airbnb.

  • We loved our stay at Laid Bothy. The place was sparking clean and cosy. Vanessa and David provided detailed descriptions of lovely local walks and were very happy to answer any questions we had. I would definitely recommend this place if you want to get away from it all and take in the beautiful Scottish scenery.

  • Spectacular location overlooking the bay. A gorgeous stone bothy which has been beautifully decorated. A very special place. Make sure you stock up on provisions for your stay as it’s quite a long drive to the nearest shops.

    Hilary2019-10-04T00:00:00Z
  • The Laid Bothy is beautifully situated with great views. It's just nice to stay here! It is perfectly decorated, you can start cooking and catering right away, all super practical with fully equipped kitchen, here Vanessa thought of everything. The living room invites you to read and you can also see what happens outside weather wise. You can also start right from the house, otherwise the surrounding area offers very good hiking possibilities. We used several suggestions from Vanessa, all great. The washing machine was also briefly in use. We had changeable rainy weather and felt very well there. We would go back anytime. Also, the larger house above is beautiful!

    Ulrike2019-09-03T00:00:00Z
  • Idyllic stay This is a beautiful little Bothy, tastefully and comfortably converted to all modern needs and with everything you could need (even a knife sharpener which many places could add to their ‘must-have lists’). The location is sublime - with lovely views across Clashnessie Bay and to the mountains beyond and North. It is as the end of a little road, so completely peaceful. A wonderful place to escape to is this stunning part of the world. Vanessa was swift and clear with all communication and welcomed us with a tour of the bothy and plenty local advice. Definitely recommend.

The Hideaway with private outdoor hot tub and spectacular view is a luxurious cosy cabin overlooking the bay of Lochinver and the Assynt mountains. The property is open plan and features a superking size bed, high quality armchairs, a sleek kitchen and a flat screen tv. From the main living area, french doors lead to a generously sized balcony featuring a BBQ, wood burning stove, seating and stunning sea and mountain views.
Baddidarroch is a quiet area on the outskirts of Lochinver, with beautiful views across the bay to the mountains beyond, and within walking distance of local amenities.
  • The Hideaway is a great little hidden gem. We didn’t get to use the patio area because of the weather but if the weather was good it would be great to sit out in the evening and enjoy the view. Everything was spotlessly clean and we had very good communication with Jason. We did use the hot tub despite the wind and rain which was great. Disappointed that no restaurants open or take away options so had to get food from the spar. But I guess it’s the time of year.

  • Jason’s Hideaway in Lochinver was everything we had hoped for and more. We could not fault this little haven of tranquility! Although we didn’t have much sunshine this weekend to go with it, the hot tub was a dream and a great way to end the day. The cabin was immaculate and well equipped with everything you could need - we were worried we hadn’t brought enough stuff with us for the weekend but there was no need to worry as we had everything there. The fire was a great addition as well, especially as we had a chillier evening. All in all a fabulous getaway and we will definitely be back - 10/10.

Old style B&B; you'll have a room in my home, and share the bathroom with me. My flat is clean, bright, newly refurbished, and boasts an ideal location in the harbour area. Sea views and walking distance to bars and retaurants. The property is on the top floor so is very quiet. Lochinver is a great base along the NC500 route & for exploring the stunning landscapes of Assynt. There's a lot to do in the area if you love natural beauty, with walks straight from the door.
My flat is part of a historic, old Victorian building, and as such has quite a quirky character. The floorboards are slightly uneven and the walls are a bit lumpy but for most people this just adds to the charm! There are 6 flights of stairs to climb, as I'm on the top floor, but it's worth it :)
Lochinver is a small, friendly village popular with visitors in summer and relatively sleepy in winter. During the season there are several eateries offering evening meals all within easy walking distance of the flat. During the winter months the choices are reduced but there are still options, and the village boasts 2 pubs/bars, which occasionally have live music. The Culag woods with excellent paths is very close to my apartment and is a good place for a sheltered stroll at any time of the year. Alternatively, a short walk along to the marina might be rewarded by otter sightings while eagles are regularly seen overhead. Lochinver is a thriving (if small) tourist hub with well-stocked grocery shops, a famous pie shop, gift shops and a gallery showing the work of local artists, while no visit would be complete without a trip to Highland Stoneware pottery.
  • Great night spent at Mary's. The apartment is beautiful and Mary is adorable! thanks again

  • The room was spotless and well decorated by Mary's paintings which we were both very impressed. Mary also made excellent breakfast for us and we talked a lot happily. We really enjoy stay. Highly recommended!

  • Marry is very good, the room is clean and tidy, I like it very much. I also chat with me. I ask in advance if I need to reserve the location of the restaurant downstairs. The restaurant is quite hot. We didn’t plan to go. My husband didn’t have a good dinner. I don’t have a place when I want to go. I will think about the marry home next time.

My place is close to the beach and family-friendly activities. My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, limited mobility, families (with kids), big groups, and furry friends (pets).
Our bungalow is close to the white sand beach of Clachtoll Bay. The house is all on one level with a wetroom bathroom. There is also a removable ramp to the front door. Which makes it suitable for limited mobility.
We are situated in Assynt Coighach National Scenic Area and the Geopark. Surrounded by secluded beaches, stunning mountains and the oldest rocks in Britain.
  • Amazing place and can't fault it at all

    Susan2020-02-19T00:00:00Z
  • Perhaps the best Airbnb experience I've had. An awesome location with beach one way and gneiss landscape the other. Cottage spacious, well equipped, ideal. Host friendly. Definitely recommended.

  • You will not be disappointed with Williams place. The views are amazing and the themes are awesome. The personal local touches really makes it. I love the puffins wish we could have visited puffin island but sadly we came out of season. Plenty of firewood is provided. We did not feel cold at all. This is definitely worth a visit.

  • A wonderful property in a beautiful and wild part of Scotland. Spotlessly clean, great welcome, William is always available to answer any queries either about the lovely cottage or ideas for what to do and see in the area. Lovely decoration, great wood stove to fall asleep in front of after a long day out. Very comfortable. We had a great time, and would totally recommend either for a short stay if travelling the North Coast 500 or as a base for exploring this stunningly beautiful part of Scotland. Many thanks William and Caroline for all your help and hard work. Look forward to seeing you again soon. Alan

  • Set in a stunning location and very well equipped, the house is a wonderful place to be based to access the splendour and majesty of the Assynt region. We really enjoyed our stay and would recommend the house. The welcome from the owners was warm and friendly

  • Lovely cottage, lovely views, dog friendly beaches nearby and very nice, caring hosts. We arrived in the rain half way through a power cut. Willians wife brought us lights and a flask of boiling water for tea. Would definitely recommend staying there.

Cathair Dhubh estate contains 5 lovely self catering cottages and Heather Cottage is the largest amongst them. The views are simply amazing! Bring your binoculars and you could be watching whales, basking sharks, porpoises and dolphins all from your window! The cottage has 3 bedrooms, a double and two twins and each has an ensuite bathroom. There is a well-equipped kitchen, including an oven, hob and microwave, together with a fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer. The open plan lounge and dining area provides a spacious, comfy place to relax and is equipped with satellite TV and DVD player and CD radio. We do have Wifi, but in the spirit of getting away from it all, it is quite basic and at times, elusive! There are patio doors leading to outside seating where you can experience the breathtaking views.
  • Just had 2 weeks at Heather Cottage. The views and location are wonderful and Kate is a fantastic host. Fabulous walks from the cottage and stunning beaches within a short drive. The information for where to visit etc is well presented in a folder and a lovely bottle of wine and chocolates were a lovely touch. We had deer in the garden on a few eve’s and saw various birds of prey and the sunsets were stunning. All in all we would recommend this holiday cottage and would love to return.

    Karen2019-09-28T00:00:00Z
  • Stunning views to wake up to! Fantastic location to explore the Highlands from (either by car or on foot). The coast is phenomenal and the house was perfect.

    Dan2019-08-10T00:00:00Z
  • Heather Cottage is in a fabulous location, with stunning views from the living area, downstairs bedroom and bathroom. The estate has plenty of outdoor space with access to a cove ideal for launching kayaks or swimming, coastal walks to Achmelvich and Clachtoll beaches, great for spending time outdoors. The cottage itself has everything you need, including a decent size fridge freezer, loads of cooking equipment, and a washing machine and tumble dryer. Kate was easy to contact, and quick to respond. Couldn’t recommend this high enough, it’s a fantastic place to stay.

    Cal2019-07-27T00:00:00Z
  • Kate is a wonderful host and Assynt is heaven. But please do not tell too many people about Cathair Dhubh! It is best kept a selfish secret!

    Edward2019-07-20T00:00:00Z
  • Heather Cottage at Cathair Dhubh provides top quality accommodation with ample space for a party of 6. The location is exceptional with sea views and ideally located for exploring the unique landscape of Assynt. Highly recommended.

    Michael2019-06-01T00:00:00Z
  • A wonderful opportunity to get back to nature.Accommodation all that we could have expected and perhaps more given the remote location of the estate. Kate, our host, was most accommodating in respect of any enquiry both with regard to the property itself and to the area. A magical place.

    Jeremy2019-05-18T00:00:00Z
  • Cathair Dubh is in a wonderful position looking out to sea amidst Sutherland’s fantastic coastline and mountains, we love this area. We stayed in Heather Cottage which is very spacious, well equipped and comfortable. Kate and her husband have recently purchased the estate and are very good hosts and have exciting plans for the future. Lochinver has some excellent restaurants and eateries to suit all tastes and we particularly liked Peet’s with very friendly staff. We’ve bathed at Achmelvich Beach, Clashtoll and Clashnessie - “refreshing” shall we say, but just stunning beaches. Our 2 week holiday has been a huge success and we will be back, for sure.

    Caroline2018-09-29T00:00:00Z
  • Seldom have I stayed in such a cozy, comfortable and well-equipped accommodation. The location is absolutely breathtaking and the house itself has everything you need for a relaxing holiday. Kate and Gary were perfect hosts and on arrival we were greeted with a freshly baked cake, a bottle of wine, a loaf of bread and milk. During our stay we had sheep and deer roaming around the grounds which added authenticity to the whole Highlands experience. The surrounding beaches are beautiful and there are plenty of interesting walks near the cottages. I hope we can make it back some day, fantastic holiday 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

90 Achmelvich is a renovated croft house situated 2 minutes walk from Achmelvich beach. The house has 3 bedrooms (2 en suite), large open plan lounge with wood burner, dining and kitchen area, a small second sitting room plus utility room. The house is in a great location to explore the North West of Sutherland, with activities such as fishing, shooting, hill-walking, climbing, sea kayaking, bird watching, or for simply enjoying the great outdoors.
  • Great space inside the house- especially the open plan kitchen/sitting room with stove. The place feels very light -even on a very drich day. Close to the beach. We went out on our kayaks every day and went swimming too. Loved the week and would like to come back

    Claudia2019-08-31T00:00:00Z
  • This was our second time to stay at Alistair’s place in Achmelvich and once again it was absolutely fantastic. I imagine we’ll be back again. It worked out perfectly for showing our visiting American family the joys of the Highlands. It is just a short walk to the beach - perfect for morning, daytime and evening walks. There are lovely walks almost out the front door and many, many more a short drive around Assynt. And the house provides a welcome retreat and space should the weather not be entirely cooperative. We’d highly recommend staying here!

    Christopher2019-06-22T00:00:00Z
  • A beautiful, quiet, restful, spacious, comfortable well thoughtout haven.

    Philippa2018-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • Alistair's home is fantastic. The inside is lovely and sets the exact tone for a relaxing holiday. Combine that with a view of the Highland coos and deer grazing in the field behind the house and the very short stroll to the beach and you have a magical combination. We have stayed in the area many times (in rental accommodation as well as camping), but never in such a lovely home. It really helps make the holiday a success. You will want to bring with you any specialist food (especially if you are veggie or vegan) and drink as the local Lochinver shops can be a bit limited - but the pie shop more than makes up for limitations - it is a 'must visit' every time we are up north (though their vegan options are limited for the vegan amongst us). Walking in the area is lovely and the beaches are absolutely beautiful. Highly recommend!

Coillessan Lodge is situated in Inverkirkaig, just a couple of minutes walk from the beautiful Inverkirkaig Bay. The picturesque village of Lochinver is just a short drive away.
We have a lovely spacious living/dining area on the upper floor which opens out onto a small lit balcony.
Peaceful area close to Inverkirkaig Bay. Achins bookshop is not far and also the Kirkaig Falls.
  • This is a very thoughtfully constructed lodge which is well appointed warm and cosy. It is situated in an excellent location betwixt mountains and sea. The surrounding area of mountains and coast is unsurpassed on this unique island of ours.😊😊 exceptional!

  • We loved staying at the lodge. It is very homely and a minute walk from the bay. Both in rain and sunshine it was wonderful to stay here and very well equipped! I cannot recommend this place enough!

  • STAY HERE!! Coilessan is a beautiful cozy modern wooden home in the stunning hamlet of Inverkirkaig. Clean, well equipped, beautiful location , fab balcony and nice safe garden - and it’s all just meters away from the shore (perfect for sea kayaking). We have stayed here twice before and we be back again. This is my dream home! We enjoyed our home made meals both outside and upstairs in the fabulous lounge. This time M and I took the bunk room (we had friends with us), and we were v comfortable - the bunk beds are a good size for tall adults ....2m long and a decent width. We did some lovely walks, wild swims and of course a spot of kayaking on glassy water. Turquoise beaches, abundant wildlife ( spotted water vole, a slow worm, various frogs and one toad, a dragons flies, bumble bees, siskins and a vocal tawny owl all in the garden). Elaine and Charlie are lovely hosts. Spend time at this lovely home and you’ll not be disappointed! Hoping the wooden bear will be back too

Former croft house on the coast 8 miles from Lochinver, with spectacular views, renovated to a high standard with underfloor heating. Downstairs is an open plan kitchen/dining/living room, a utility/boot room and a toilet. In the living area, which can be curtained off, is a king-size sofa bed. Upstairs are two bedrooms, one double with ensuite, one twin and a bathroom with a shower over the bath. A comfortable home for 4-6 people on a working croft with the owners' house adjacent.
Beyond the end of a very minor road, with views across Clashnessie Bay to the spectacular Sutherland hills of Quinag, Ben Stack, Arkle and Foinaven, you will find Laid Croft House. It is a traditional two-storey stone cottage, renovated sympathetically and to a high standard. The rooms are warm and cosy, with underfloor heating under natural slate tiles downstairs and pine flooring upstairs. Walls downstairs are well-insulated except for two, adjacent to other rooms, of natural stone. Upstairs they are of well-insulated wood panelling, some of which is original. There is a wood-burning stove in the living-room. There is free wifi and a television which receives Freesat channels. At the side entrance is a good-sized utility/boot room where the fridge/freezer, dishwasher and washing machine are kept. Off this room is a small downstairs toilet. The house is set on a working croft, with rare breed Hebridean sheep, pigs and hens, and Highland cattle on the neighbouring croft. Produce from the croft may be available to purchase, depending on the time of year you visit. Laid Croft House provides a peaceful escape from the pace of modern living, without compromising on comfort, and is an ideal base for exploring the magical landscape of Assynt and the Northwest Highlands.
Vanessa’s home is located in Clashnessie, 8 miles from Lochinver, Scotland, United Kingdom. There are other excellent beaches nearby, at Clachtoll and Achmelvich, walks to suit all ages and levels, from the All Abilities Path near Loch Assynt, to the Munros of Ben More Assynt and Conival, not forgetting iconic Suilven, Quinag, which you can see from the Croft House, and the other beautiful hills of the Northwest Geopark. Lochinver is also famous for its pottery, where you can see articles being hand-painted, and its pie shop, and there are many places to eat there at all price levels.
  • A remote location overlooking the sea and mountains with stunning walks and beaches nearby. Comfy beds, hot water and a well equipped kitchen. A good base for exploring this beautiful part of Scotland. The owners live next door and were on hand and happy to answer any questions we had. Thank you Vanessa & David!

  • We spent 9 days in Clashnessie and had a wonderful and very relaxing time (5 adults). Hiking, starting either from the flat or from some of the trails nearby was great, we were lucky with the weather and spent some time at Clashnessie and some of the other beaches nearby as well. The flat absolutely meets both description and pictures, the views from the rooms are awesome letting you experience this wonderful part of Scotland even when staying inside when one of the rather rare rainy moments occurr. Thank you, Vanessa and David for the wonderful days we have had in Clashnessie.

    Yvonne2019-07-31T00:00:00Z
  • This house a brilliantly located for the beach, climbing hills, fishing, cycling etc. The house is spotlessly clean, very comfortable and the host is really helpful and available as they are next door if required. There are great views from the front of the house to the nearby beach and distant mountains. Really quite spot and a great retreat. We had a great stay.

    Greg2019-07-20T00:00:00Z
  • A place to get away from it everything... Except the magnificent outdoors of Assynt. Despite some unpredictable weather (come prepared for rain!) we had a great vacation here. Vanessa’s house is a spacious, wonderfully restored farmhouse with lots of charm, dreamy beds, and a collection of greats books and magazines to browse by the fire. Also, we really liked that the hosts are so eco friendly (solar power, recycling and composting options) and support the local economy (the lovely dishes were from a local artisan). There are tons of walks nearby, more than one can do in a week, but the Stoer coast and Clach Toll beach are particularly not to be missed.

    Charlotte2019-07-04T00:00:00Z
  • Vanessa and David were there to meet us, I hadn’t communicated as well as usual as I thought my husband was organising, my mistake, they had had no communication. Still they were there to meet us. The house had everything you would need and sparkly clean. Loved our stay.

Beautifully renovated 2-bed cottage with a view of the loch/sea in the heart of the traditional fishing village of Lochinver. Minutes from shops and restaurants. Off road parking opposite the cottage. Ideally located for walking, climbing, and exploring the truly wild Highlands and it's iconic mountains; including our very own "sugar loaf", Suilven.
Lovely 2-bed semi-detached cottage in the very heart of Lochinver. Open plan lounge/diner and newly fitted kitchen.
Lochinver has a wonderful small and friendly community and staying at Bridgend Cottage puts you right in the heart of that community. You will be opposite a wonderful pub/restaurant, a newsagent and another restaurant. And just along the road one of the village's two shops and the petrol station. Further on you can walk past our lovely local shops, cafes, restaurants and down to the harbour and the Leisure Centre.

  • A cosy cottage in a handy location near the tiny Supermarket, post office and pie shop. Well equipped with washing machine and dryer too which were very handy half way through our trip. We really enjoyed lighting the fire and relaxing by it in the evenings, very cosy. Beds were comfortable and bedrooms spacious.

  • You'll have the whole house to yourself, so it feels like home. The house is beautifully warm and inviting, with a very full range of amenities. It has been decorated beautifully, and is very clean and spacious. Best of all, it's situated across the road from the Lochinver Larder which provides the best meals and pies (during the day) in the North West!!!

Our handmade timber pods are fully insulated and feature underfloor heating, making them ideal for when the weather is more Motherwell than Miami. Each pod has a living space with L-shape sofa & dining table and a kitchenette with over/hob, fridge & Belfast sink. The pods can comfortably sleep 4 (1 double bed and 1 double sofa bed) and have an en suite WC with on demand hot water & electric shower. All of our pods feature WiFi, in-built Bluetooth sound systems, smart TVs & USB wall sockets.
You’d be forgiven for thinking that you’d been teleported to the Caribbean upon stepping foot on Achmelvich beach. The fine white sandy beach and turquoise water of the bay are at first a stark contrast to the rugged beauty of the surrounding Assynt area. Sand castle builders, water-skiers, sail boats, swimmers, kayakers & fishing enthusiasts alike, are a common sight in and around Achmelvich bay. At night there are often (responsibly managed) bonfires where friends will share a drink or two. There’s something magical about the place and the people who visit time and time again. Our pods are a mere 2 minute walk from this stunning, clean and often bustling beach. Why don’t you join us?
  • Brilliant pods in a wonderful place. The perfect base for exploring the local area.

  • Practical and impeccable accommodation in an absolutely amazing place. Wonderful views! Good location to get to know North West Highlands. Glenda and her family are lovely. And if you're lucky, like us, you'll see herons, deer and sea otters (yes!) From the window. Highly recommended!

  • Eilidh's place is a lovely wee space adjoining the family home with a beautiful view over Lochinver harbour towards Suilven (when the mist isn't down!). The family are such decent, genuine people and made us feel incredibly welcome with wee thoughtful touches. The area is incredible for hillwalking and enjoying the great outdoors. We had the most magnificent holiday and would love to come back!

Westhaven is situated, only a few meters stroll from a pristine white sandy beach, with unrestricted glorious views over the stunning bay of Clachtoll and out across the wild Atlantic Ocean. This dog friendly, bright and warm 3 bedroomed home has all the amenities to enable you to stay in luxurious comfort. Its spacious kitchen is perfect for large family meals before relaxing in the snug or sitting room to be mesmerized by the magnificent ocean views.
Westhaven faces west over the south end of Bay of Clachtoll, The bay has a truly glorious beach of white sand lapped by idyllic turquoise water. From the headlands either side of the beach you gain stunning mountain views to the south. The northern half of the bay contrasts with its neighbour comprises layers of sloping rock strata and stone. This, and the rocks of the headlands either side of the sandy beach, make Clachtoll a renowned spot for geologists, and you are as likely to see visitors heading for the beach with helmets and geologists' hammers as with flippers and snorkels.. Between the two inlets is a grassy headland on which you find a salmon bothy. This small stone building is part of the Clachtoll Salmon Station, preserved by the Assynt Historical Society. Displays show how the salmon station, which closed in 1994, would have operated. Less obvious than the bothy, and a little to the north east of it, is the ice house in which the catch would be kept until transported to market. A short walk to the north of Clachtoll bay is, the Bay of Stoer, with its beautifully polished stones and overlooking the bay you will find the Clachtoll Broch the remains of a spectacular iron age settlement. Westhaven is in an area that has some of the very best coastal and inland walks in Scotland with breathtaking views and stunning variety. Towering mountains, jagged cliffs and secluded beaches all surrounded by the ever present, awe inspiring, power of the changing ocean.

HOLLY is one of two cabins that can be booked at Rustic Cabins, tucked up in the North West of Scotland, on the Stoer Peninsula, 1 mile from the NC500 route and 9 miles from Lochinver. Take your time and explore this remote corner of the Highlands by staying at Rustic Cabins, Achnacarnin which offers comfortable accommodation in a relaxing location for up to 4 people. With iconic mountains and stunning beaches nearby, Holly is the perfect base for you, your family and friends to explore from.
On the picturesque Stoer Head peninsula lies the quiet corner of Rustic Cabins. Through the gate and past the small wooded area, you reach the cabins of HOLLY and HAZEL. Both face towards the Assynt mountains with plenty of space outside to enjoy, whatever the weather. Inside you will find a nice wee living room with a double room, twin room and kitchen off to the sides and a bathroom with bathtub and shower.
This is a quiet corner off the main NC500 tourist route. Surrounded by crofting farm land and a mixture of residents and holiday homes. A great place to walk or cycle out from and explore the beaches and coastal landscape. At Clachtoll just 3 miles away there is a well stocked beach hut shop (Flossie's) and the nearest town of Lochinver is just 9 miles.
  • We stayed in Hazel cabin, a lovely quirky clean cabin with great views where we watched deer on the hillside. Fully stocked kitchen and we had a good nights sleep. Great communication with host.

  • My dad and I stayed in Holly for one night during our NC500 cycling adventure and loved the charming little cabin. We got caught in bad weather and didn’t make it to the store before it closed at 6pm, but they were kind enough to bring us a basket of food (and beer!) to cook up when we arrived. It was appreciated beyond words! As the bad weather had passed in the morning, we could enjoy the amazing view from the cabin porch. And of course, gorgeous views as we made our way north from Achnacarnin.

The Estate houses five lovely self-catering properties which are all listed on Airbnb. Fern is a cosy semi-detached cottage looking out over Achmelvich Bay. The cottage has two bedrooms; a double and a twin. It has a good sized family bathroom. There is a fully-fitted and well-equipped kitchen, incorporating an oven, hob and microwave, together with a fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer. The open plan lounge and dining area provides a comfy place to relax and is equipped with satellite TV and DVD player and CD radio. We do have Wifi, but in the spirit of getting away from it all, it is quite basic and at times, elusive!
  • Exceptional week. Comfortable accommodation and extremely well located in terms of the view from there. The wifi can just watch the weather and send one or two messages: do not ask him more. No problem for us, but not for our teenager who first made the face! But hey, he has not spent more time with his parents ;-) We find in the village restaurants 15 minutes (in Lochinver, at Peet's in particular) a good wifi for those who need it. For us, this was the case for downloading maps of the region to plan our hikes. As this village is also home to the only supermarket in the region, this is not an additional constraint. To recommend warmly to nature lovers and the north of Scotland!

  • A fantastic little cottage in an amazing location. Superb views, quiet and in a fabulous location. Just a few miles from Lochinver, and a short walk to a beautiful secluded beach. This is a wild, Scottish location second to none!

  • We had a fantastic week at Cathair Dhubh! Our kids (8 &12yrs) and puppy loved exploring the rocks and beaches on the doorstep. The beaches are stunning! It’s a perfect location for getting away from it all and exploring the North West. The cottage was very clean and really well equipped, with lots of lovely touches such as suggested walks, board games and tea & cake on arrival. I was glad that we took loads of food with us as there’s not much in the way of food nearby, although Lochinver 4 miles away has a great pie shop and there’s a butchers and well stocked Spar. The kitchen is very well equipped so we were able to cook properly to eat in / prep lunches. I’d really recommend the hotel at Kylesku for food too! Couldn’t recommend highly enough!

  • Clean, warm and cosy cottage with everything needed for a family holiday away from it all and with lovely views, great footpaths from the door along the coast in both directions to stunning beaches and more views, loads of exploring to do in the area.

  • Had a spectacular stay. Fantastic location and accommodation. Such lovely owners and lovely personal touch with a homemade cake, bottle of wine and cup of tea supplies. We absolutely loved our stay and would definitely love to return. Accommodation had such beautiful surroundings and was out of the way from the main road which was ideal for our dog to have the freedom to run around. Also very close to some fantastic beaches and walks. Would highly recommend to stay here. Thank you so much to Kate and Gary outstanding hosts.

  • Spectacular view and location with so much to see outside the front door. The weather was both sunny and moody and both had their glories. The house is well outfitted for staying home and making soup but also plenty to eat nearby. Comfy beds and couch. Easy check in. Lots of great info on things to do. Good lighting and super clean. WiFi is poor but embrace the peace and quiet! The pie shop in Lochinver is a must do, as is The Kylesku Hotel. We loved Culag Woods and hikes at the Bone Caves. Would love to return to this wild and beautiful place.

  • Spent a wonderful week in this lovely place with stunning views. Kate was very pleasant and helpful ( a problem with the shower was fixed very promptly). She also has excellent knowledge of the area. The cottage was spotlessly clean, bright and very well equipped. Thoughtful touches like dishwasher powder were much appreciated.

  • A stunning location and a fabulous cottage, equipped with everything I needed. It was comfortable, cosy and practical. There were lots of thoughtful touches (like plenty of great kitchen utensils and a fully-equipped kitchen!) and the views are breathtaking. Kate is a fantastic host, and I was made to feel both welcome and looked after. Nothing was too much trouble. I really didn’t want to leave, and I fully intend to be back. Thank you so much!

  • The cottages are clean, warm, comfortable, well equipped and finished to a high standard. The location is beautiful, wild and unspoilt. It is lovely to wander around the rocky terrain in the evening and watch the sunset over the sea. There is a lovely walk to Almelvich beach straight from the door ( about a mile at most). Lochinver is about a 15 min drive away and has a few shops, pub, eateries, petrol etc. The general area is stunningly beautiful. If you like walking, cycling, canoeing, wild swimming, white sand beaches - then you’re made! Paradise!

  • A beautiful cottage in an absolutely stunning location! The cottage is very well equipped, tidy and spacious (although I was there on my own). I would advise any guests going not to rely on their phones as I struggled for signal/wifi connection throughout my stay but I think it's part of the charm. Really gorgeous views, will hopefully return at some point!
