A typical English Shepherd's Hut with pine interior, brass bed, caravan style heater, situated in a farm animal sanctuary overlooking a vast mountain range, just 7 kms from the village of Greyton, South Africa's first Transition Town. Included in your overnight stay is breakfast at our vegetarian/vegan Pure Cafe in the heart of the village of Greyton.
The Shepherd's Hut is situated in a farm animal sanctuary with over 100 rescued pigs, sheep, goats, geese, chickens and ducks plus three dogs and five cats. The hosts live on site in straw bale houses. The farm is off grid and fully solar powered. There is no electricity in the hut or ablutions but solar lamps are provided.
Guests are welcome throughout the 40 hectare farm and home paddock and can join the hosts for vegan meals. The owner's house is next to the hut and guests are welcome to use the kitchen, living area and chill out on the back stoep in our hammocks! Phones and laptops can be charged in the house.
Two hot showers and composting toilets are available a short walk from the Hut for guests.
Interaction with guests
We are delighted to help guests to enjoy their stay in any way we can.
Other things to note
Guests are welcome to help out at feeding times with the animals, to join in with Greyton Transition Town activities (the host is the Chairperson of this non-profit) or to just relax and enjoy the privacy of the Hut.
We are a vegan household and request that no animal products are consumed on the farm. We also do not allow smoking and, because of the farm animals roaming free, we sadly cannot welcome pets. Very young children should be lifted clear of the farm animals although we do provide safe access to our child friendly piglets and lambs.
