About this listing

This 3 bedroom house, set in the C18th stable yard, with its own private courtyard garden is surrounded by 10 acres of beautiful gardens and sits close to The Green Barn Restaurant and Shop, and our walled organic kitchen garden. It has been decorated to the highest of standards by James an interior photographer and Joanna an interior designer. Built in 1710, and never been sold, and so for that reason it holds a particular charm. Check out our January and February deals we have just launched.

The space

The Stable Yard House is located in the picturesque courtyard, set within the grounds of the historic Burtown House and Gardens. Built in 1710 by Quakers, it is one of two houses in Kildare from the C18th to have never been sold. The courtyard garden which is full of lavender, agapanthus, mixed borders, potted plants, lawns and a pleached hornbeam walk, is further surrounded by 10 acres of gardens, a walled organic kitchen garden, meadow walks set in old parkland, with mown pathways and large stone sculpture which is again surrounded by farm walks across the fields. The gardens are considered to be some of the finest in Ireland, and are open to the public from February to October.
Guests are welcomed on arrival by James or Joanna Fennell or by one of their team. We will show you about and answer any questions that you may have, and will be on standby for any questions throughout your stay.

Guest access

Guests have free access to all the gardens, as well as the courtyard garden, a tennis court, and surrounding parkland and farm walks. You will also have access to an abundance of organic kitchen garden produce which can be ordered by the box.
The Green Barn, which is an organic restaurant, artisan food shop, retail area, and a series of galleries is also available for our guests to avail of. Guests can have lunch in The Green Barn or make use of the full working kitchen in the house. By prior arrangement catered dinners can be supplied.
On arrival, basic products will be supplied, with much of our own produce such as apple juice, preserves, bread and butter. We supply Nespresso coffee. There is also an honesty bar. L'Occitan bath products and everything else that you will need will be at your disposal. There is an abundance of interesting coffee table books, glossy magazines and fresh flowers throughout.

Interaction with guests

We supply all information that we feel you might need in the form of a 'Black Book', which can be found within the house. We tell you everything we know about the area, from where to eat, drink, listen to music, or go for walks, historic sites, where to shop and how best to enjoy the surroundings here at Burtown.

Other things to note

There are friendly dogs on the property, and there is a working farm.
Burtown is a cross between history, heritage, gardens, art and very good food that is straight from the ground. We are passionate about what we eat and where it comes from, and when staying at Burtown we hope to inspire, relax, entertain and make you feel at home.
There is a stream and woodland garden close to the stable yard.

The quintessential country experience...James, Joanna and Leslie were just lovely!! They were helpful for our day trips and arranging food to be delivered after our arrival. Their organic restaurant on the property is a great amenity and their food is fantastic!! Upon arrival we had fresh scones, butter and jelly along with coffee and milk! The stables are quaint and we had all we needed for our home away from home. The beds are comfy and one our favorite moments each day was waking up to the birds singing in the garden!! We also enjoyed exploring the gardens after a long day on the road! Many thanks for making our Ireland experience all it could be!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

STUNNING! What a meticulously beautiful job this family has done with the Stable Mews. Every room done in detail and comfort. Two incredibly relaxing bathtubs, brilliant kitchen, and a wonderful bed in the master suite. The property is even more stunning, with magic garden walks, brilliant art, and the best food we've had all year right next door at their all organic from their farm restaurant. I think we tried almost everything on the menu...All impressive! James and family were so welcoming and prompt with any needs. They respected our privacy, and made us feel at home instantly. Also a great base to get into Dublin, Wicklow, or any of other surrounding beauty in these parts. It went well beyond our expectations, Thank you James, we hope to come back soon!

Hard to express what a wonderful place this is. From the beautiful home, to the gardens and the hosts... It is somewhere I would like to live. We stayed here for a month, using it as a base for our travels. About 50 minutes from Dublin, but easy access to all of Ireland's East. Enjoy!

Response from James:
Hi Ciara, Yes i am sorry that the fridge had been missed - we are working on the right cleaner and a serious check list is now in place. Alas The Green Barn is nearly there - but delays there have been due to archeological digs to start with and the the usual build delays....Mid October we hope. We have WiFi and decided with all the gardens, things to see and and good food, that we should not do the TV thing for a country pad such as this - apologies i must adjust the listing. This house has recently been redecorated so each week we do more, and i hope you appreciated some of that we offer.... One must always ask for things like private codes or infact anything ....but i should have mentioned - i apologise, All the best, James

Burtown House was beyond fantastic! We were two couples and three young kids and we all had a wonderful time. The kids loved exploring the gardens, playing with the dogs, seeing the cows and the feeding the donkeys. Every day was an adventure without leaving the grounds. Us parents enjoyed Joanne's delicious organic cooking for dinner and lunches at the gallery cafe. The Stable Barn was a very comfortable and there was lots of space for all of us. James and Joanne were a gracious hosts and we felt very well taken care of, while given lots of privacy. Athy is a short drive away so the grocery was easy to get to ... As are the many local pubs. We could not recommend a holiday at Burtown a House more highly. We will definitely be back.

We spent an amazing three days staying in the Stable Yard at Burtown. The house itself is a converted stable, with three large bedrooms and a very cool, classically-furnished sitting room. My kids particularly liked the door hidden behind a bookcase! The kitchen is big and has an Aga. Little treats, like fresh eggs and home made jams were left out for us. The setting is truly unrivalled as the stable is in the grounds of Burtown House itself, which has unbelievably amazing gardens which were exploding into colour when we were there. So everywhere you wander and walk there are little areas to enjoy, sit, chill and admire the gardener's work. There is also a massive walled garden near the house where James grows an astonishing array of organic vegetables and salads which is a sight to see. The produce is used in the restaurant attached to the house, which serves fantastic food, which means that basically we didn't have to cook the whole time we were here which made it a real holiday. I hope to come back again soon as the Stable Yard is a true gem of a place and we left feeling utterly relaxed and chilled out.

A really lovely place to stay if you want to get away for a relaxing weekend in an idyllic rural setting. We had a wonderfully laid back two days at The Stable Yard at Burtown House. What a pleasure to be able to wander back to the beautiful Stable Yard cottage through the stunning Burtown gardens after a delicious lunch at the Gallery Cafe! Everything in the cosy, yet elegant cottage was perfect - so much thought and imagination has gone into its design and decor, as has attention to detail. James and Joanna are perfect hosts and I cant wait to come back again in the summer when the garden is in full bloom. A great place for foodies, nature lovers and plant enthusiasts. With access to their organic kitchen garden and home produce such as preserves and apple juice, and carefully selected organic wines make this stable yard house a unique place to stay.

I am a photographer based in Ireland, but who travels quite a bit. Joanna is a designer and supurb chef, where she heads the restaurant that is situated in our beautiful home in Ireland called Burtown House. It is surrounded by 12 acres of lush flowers, woodland and vegetable gardens, a sculpture park and many fields of wild flowers. We are passionate about what we eat and where it has come from (normally our garden) which supplies our restaurant. Our house in Ireland is one one of the few houses in Ireland to be still lived in by the family that built it. You can find more on the web - or .
We use No 46 as a place to escape, read, chill, socialise, get some city action, and spoil ourselves with fine food and wine. It is a gem of a city and we love it.
