Newly refitted Mar'23 - The regal Lady Norrie K is a classic Dutch cargo ship built in 1929 and retains all the memorabilia of this era. Carefully restored and retaining the marvelous and iconic fittings one would expect from this period. The accommodation is exclusively yours and is moored in our private Dock with free parking on Long Walk in Galway City centre.
Note - this is a REAL boat; independant of the land and it has a gangway and occassional faults - it is an experience - not a hotel.
The space
I have done my best to recreate the atmospheric and cozy living accommodation of a Dutch skipper and his family from 1929.
This is a very exclusive and special space comprising of a few compartments – the shower and toilet located forward of the steering house, the steering hut with two very comfortable pilot seats overlooking the river estuary, the main saloon with the kitchenette and the compact and charming sleeping cabin.
Lady Norrie K is a real ship floating in a sheltered Dock on the Wild Atlantic Way. There could be movement, there could be wildness. Staying with us is an experience, pumps can break, time can run out and the sky could fall on our heads. if this is too much for you, then you need to book a hotel room.
You and your partner will have exclusive use of this accommodation with private access. The cargo bay is not accessible.
Access is through the Starboard door off deck. The gangway lands on this deck and is shared by two guests who may be staying on the Pink boat which is moored 3meters from the ship (See boarding plan).
I decided to leave open a steel hatch over the main engine and when you enter the ship you can look down on the original air started Deutz motor through the glass floor. The ship is kept in running order. Interestingly – she was converted to Hybrid in 2012 and she can also run on her electric motor.
There are two comfy pilot chairs in the steering house – I’ve often sat here in the evenings with a glass of wine and watched the ships pass into the Port or more likely – watch the rain!
The main saloon is aft down a stairs.
Heat is provided by a wonderful Webasto warm air heater, the heat permeates up to the steering hut but there is a separate heating unit for the shower and toilet. Overall, it is a warm and cozy ship.
The main saloon is lovingly restored to its original condition with polished teak parquet floor and mahogany furniture. I retained much of the original tat and hand sewn lace curtains. It is very atmospheric, romantic and cozy. The saloon has a head height of 1.9m or 6’3”
The kitchenette has a cooker, fridge and microwave however I cannot allow frying or smelly cooking due to the lingering smell.
The gorgeous polished mahogany panelled sleeping cabin is compact and the bed measures 190cm x 160cm or 6’3” x 5’5” – naturally with a top of the range mattress and 750tc bed linen. It may not be ideal for claustrophobic land lubbers.
The shower and toilet are through the steering hut and although the shower is a standard 90cm x 90cm the height is 1.9m or 6’3”. The shower is equivalent or better than most household showers.
Guest access
The skippers accommodation occupies the aft quarter of the ship. You and your partner have this area exclusively. There is no access to the cargo hold. The gangway serves 2 other boats (couples) and lands on the Lady Norris K aft so some very light traffic passes the main door - kinda like a Hotel, but its not a hotel.
After Mr. Karam's visit; Visitors are not allowed on the boat. (P.S. I live in the dock)
Galway is a village - you can walk anywhere in 10 minutes. However, for the car dependant, and as I like to be a super host; there is a FREE on site space for your third appendage - please be mindful, Im not going to be held responsible for your vehicle - thats why its free.
There is a great and extensive food market in Galway (St Nicholas Church) every Saturday 10am to 2pm
Other things to note
Lady Norrie K is less affected by the rolling wave however she is a ship, in a shelterered Dock on the wild Atlantic way. There may be movement, there may be wildness.
Electricty is by solar and battery so its not unlimited, she is a ship with complex utilities which can break down so if you and your partner cannot handle a little adventure or lifes little uncertanties then PLEASE book a hotel room. I have always someone on hand to repair or resolve any issues within hours - useually minutes - its all good. But its not a Hotel.
The ship is 120 foot long, you are at one end and my apartment is at the other. beside my apartment and 90 foot from yours is a new incredible Escape Room. It has its own shore access and can host up to 8 people. It operates from 10am to 8pm and theres no reason you will be aware of it. There is a very special price if you and your partner want to play it. Its called Escape Boats - of course.
I cannot allow frying or smelly cooking due to the rotten lingering smell.
I'm confident you will have a memorable and wonderful stay on Lady Norrie K and look forward to welcoming you aboard!
Thankyou, Carolina.
