Location

Bantry, Cork, Ireland

The Sheep's Head, West Cork:
A finger of land 25 miles long and no wider than four miles, the Sheep's Head Peninsula (known locally as Muntervary or Rinn Mhuintir Bháire in Irish), is set between the blue water bays of Bantry and Dunmanus: a visually striking part of the West Cork coastline. From the stony heights of Seefin Mountain to rolling pastures and sea cliffs, the peninsula offers great land and seascapes. Laharandota is just 2 miles from the southern end, where the Sheep's Head Lighthouse clings to its jagged tip, 400 feet above the surf. Take a moment to soak in the balmy (yes, balmy!) breezes: the Gulf Stream nips Ireland along this coast, explaining the presence of palm trees in the cottage's garden as in many others.

Stroll down the lane from the Cottage directly on to The Sheep's Head Way, one of Ireland's 31 Waymarked Ways (marked trails). The Peninsula's natural wild beauty makes its 55 mile trail stand out from others and offers an exciting challenge for all keen walkers. If, however, you do not fancy yourself as a 'wild rover', there's always riding, cycling, sailing, kayaking, diving, golf, cookery classes or just a relaxing afternoon taking in the fabulous Cork countryside and sea views!

Laharandota is located on the southern side of the Sheep’s Head Peninsula, about 4 miles south west of the village of Kilcrohane and 15 miles from the bustling market town of Bantry, West Cork. The propoerty is ideally located for touring the West Cork area, for walking, cycling or sailing with it's many walking routes, scenic drives, coves and bays. West Cork attractions include Garinish Island and Glengariff, the Sheep's Head and Mizen Head, as well as the town of Bantry, with its many shops, great restaurants, bars and cinema. The area is also well known for its raw natural beauty, attracting walkers, artists and anyone with a love for the outdoors to the area. Within a short drive from the property is the village of Kilcrohane, with its quay and coves for bathing, two pubs, shop and local church as well as the Sheep's Head Lighthouse and Way, which passes directly behind and in front of the cottage's gardens.

Local activities:
Diving, swimming, tennis, walking, sailing, cycling, fishing, horse riding, golf, kayaking, mountain biking, cookery classes

We are the owners of Laharandota - Julie FitzGerald and Alessandro Vitelli - based in London for work reasons with grown children and two dogs. I used to organise conferences and events in Europe and Alessandro works in town in business journalism. When we're not working or renovating and maintaining property, we love to travel! This shot was taken in Prague a few years ago. We love spending time by the sea and have another holiday home in Whitstable, Kent - Heron House - that we also rent out. It's a real privilege to have holiday homes and we like to share these wonderful old houses and coastal locations with people from all over the world. We were drawn to West Cork on a tour of Ireland back in 2006. I'm of Irish descent (the FitzGeralds & Kellys) and had visited many counties over the years, but West Cork cast its spell over us and we found ourselves spending a lot of time here. We ended up buying Laharandota on a very warm and sunny weekend in May 2006, on an impulse. The place was owned at the time by an elderly American Artist - Frank Russell - who had had a small pool built and done a great job laying out the gardens. But the Cottage itself was, however, kind of ... well, falling down! With the help of my father, a retired architect, plans were drawn up and a local builder found and two years later the place was fully restored and transformed. The first holiday guests arrived in May 2008 and for eight years now we've been letting it out when we’re not using it ourselves. We are still as captivated as ever by the place and we even decided to (finally!) get married there in May 2010 in the little church in Ahakista with all the family present. The romance continues...
